Lineage II Wallpaper Contest

Help bring the beauty of Lineage II to desktops around the world! Create a stunning, intense, and rich wallpaper to be featured on the official Lineage II site and win fabulous prizes.

Those that come up with the most impressive images will win Lineage II “prize packages.” All submissions will be judged on creativity, difficulty and overall presentation.

Well.. I THINK this means that the submissions must be made in all four sizes, rather than just in any ONE of the sizes, yes? or No?

And, Thank You, NCSoft for a fourth event, back-to-back-to-back-to back.

That's correct, one entry in all four sizes (four different files/resolutions of the same image).

Man oh man. Now I REALLY wish I would've taken pictures at AGC.

I have to admit I was relieved that you didn't have a camera with you! :D

I actually did but I figured since it wasn't a press event or a community event but a developer/industry standards event, that I wouldn't run around taking pictures of everything. Plus, I had to leave something as an excuse to go back!

But anyways, its good to see you giving away some RL items again, those contests are always interesting, even if they leave the euros out. Here's another event idea they did in Korea - in game items drop and you can redeem them for RL items. For example, a Lineage II coke can drops and you can exchange it to have a free coke coupon mailed to your house or something like that. They had this event in Korea like 2 years ago and it was awesome! You can even have coke PAY you to run the event (same with nvidia giving out video cards, belkin giving out nostromo pads, gaming mice/keyboards, monitors oh wow what an awesome idea: you make more money and your players get free stuff, everybody wins!)

You must be 13 years of age or older to participate and a legal resident of the United States (excluding the State of Rhode Island, and excluding Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, military installations and commonwealths) or Canada (excluding Quebec) as of November 1, 2005 to participate in this contest.

I think that Europeans should be REALLY happy.
... excluding Rhode Island? lol What's wrong with Rhode Island? :p

You want a list???

Ohhh, those Rhode Islanders with their wee beady eyes...

Was gonna ask that myself. LOL, must be some weird state laws I figure.

Thanks NCSoft for holding an event for just your US customers, evne thoght you released this game for the EU. It make you guys look verry good in our eyes... NOT at all, in fact if you can't make a contest where all your customers can partitate. Just dont.

I'm extreamly disepointed.

Blame the lawyers.

What is wrong with Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia?
/grumbles then finds a friend to submit an entry for me :P

a legal resident of the United States

Great, thanks.

Half your customer base is from outside the US, why make a contest that only half your customers can partake? :o
Massachussetts sucks, best get used to it now lol

Taken from Disney's (http://psc.disney.go.com/guestservices/8620.html#8620) FAQ about their online contests. The short version is, blame your own country. If your country didn't have the laws it has, you wouldn't be restricted. Simple as that:

Q: Why are residents of Quebec restricted from entering your online contest when it is open to residents of other parts of Canada?

A: This is due to strict laws in Quebec that make residents of that province ineligible to enter many of our online contests.

Quebec law requires that all promotional materials related to any such contest be presented in both English and French.

Unfortunately, this is not feasible for us. We hope that you understand.

Q: Why are residents of Puerto Rico restricted from entering your online contests?

A: This is due to strict laws in Puerto Rico that make residents of that territory ineligible to enter many of our online contests.

Puerto Rico law requires that all promotional materials related to any such contest be presented in both English and Spanish.

Unfortunately, this is not feasible for us. We hope that you understand.

Q: Why are Guests outside of the United States and Canada restricted from entering your contests?

A: We regret that our international Guests are not able to participate in many of our online contests. Due to strict laws in other countries governing online contests, it is difficult for us to register our sweepstakes outside of the United States.

EDIT:
Since these are the same regions that NCSoft excludes, I am making the assumption that they're excluded for the same reason. So how about instead of complaining to NCSoft everytime they run a contest from now on, you write a letter to your parliament, king, dictator, president, prime minister, whatever and demand your promotional laws be changed so that you can enter contests run by companies based in the United States. Focus that negative energy towards something positive that will accomplish your goals and get you free stuff.

Massachussetts sucks, best get used to it now lol

What I was kinda pointing out was a slight flaw in the rules that they might have overlooked.
It is about the definition of a Commonwealth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth

There are 4 States that are Commonwealths. Did you mean to exclude them? Or the alternative definition to Commonwealths when it pertains to Insular Territories?

Anyhoo I'll probably make an entry and submit it and see what they decide.

I need some advise on this.....

My monitor can only go as high as 1280 x 1024 so their is no way to make a wallpaper 1600 x 1200 and just scale it down for the other Resolution. Any ideas on how to get a 1600x1200 wallpaper?

any answer yet?
Sarge answered above
Have to agree on the Euro thing.

Sucks very, very big time.

Wouldn't it at least be possible to allow European entries for priceless mention?
YEah, it really sucks that euros ca participate and do not think you can blame the laws in euro countries since we pretty much can do what we want on the internet.

Hell it was legal do dowload mp3 in sweden until the 1:st of juli....

What software are you using to make your wallpaper? In most graphics software you can create a file at 1600X1200 even if you can't desplay that much. Just zoom out as far as you need to to see the whole image, and zoom in again to see what it would look like full sized.

pm me if you need specific instructions for your software and I'll try to help :)
this sucks.. i used to play lineage 2 ages ago before it came out in europe (i played the open beta, Prelude and chronicle 1) i left over a year ago.. I understood then why we couldnt enter contests like this as the game wasn't even available in the UK. Ive just come back becuase of Chronicle 3, and am now playing on Teon (europe server), but the compititions STILL arn't avalible to us... this is just frustrating. Maybe you should hold a European ONLY contest for all your customers that you are leaving out? its only fair! :)

That's my resolution at work but I suck at stick-figures so I don't be participating.
i guess i can give this contest a try ill just open up my paint and start "painting" hehhe so were we suposed to send the images also?

Canada (excluding Quebec) to participate in this contest.

WTH this is racial discrimination ... bad NCsolf go to corner
I own a couple emails and addresses I'd be happy to put for proxy use, just PM me.

Whatever creative talents I may have don't produce visuals (well, depending on what kinda $%^&* you been smokin'), so I shall not be entering.

We went thru this same thing last year when they did contests. Durn lawyers ruin everything.

Quebec > Canada
I'll post a bunch of clarifications:

Commonwealths - "We are talking about Puerto Rice, which is a commonwealth, but not a state as Massachusetts is." So states, whether or not they call themselves "commonwealths", are NOT excluded.

Quebec - "Quebec requires companies to follow some unique rules when offering their residents online contests – only one of which is presenting all the contest copy and Official Rules/Guidelines both in English and French. We love throwing contests for our community, but we don’t have all the extra time and bandwidth required to follow the out-of-the-ordinary rules Quebec and other countries make us follow in order to involve their residents. That is why it is currently NCsoft U.S.’s policy to only throw contests in the U.S and Canada (excluding Quebec)."

Here's (http://people.howstuffworks.com/question541.htm ) a link to some more information about wacky internet laws that affect contests.

Hello,

What about some in game items for people that gave an effort to produce a winning wall paper. I know I am outclassed when it comes to art talent, but I can give it a try.

I am a big fan of giving everyone a little something for the effort. Maybe a few more fireworks!

Take care

I think I know who's NOT going to win... :p
Yeah, was less cool and enthusiastic once I read this "a legal resident of the United States"...great.

Its not because of legal issues in the EU, you can win competitions fine, its the companies that doesn't want to bother with import laws, *company polices* (like Dell not wanting companies shipping their products) or VAT. Things that could be dealt with once and for all, but most companies just copy in the same rules so it becomes the easiest path.

It could of course be avoided all together by giving service prices (accounts/gametime) or ingame prices.

Anyway, I'll just sit back and enjoy whatever american wallpapers that is come up with.

Sour grapes much? Oh, wait, this is LC666...
Nah, I am fine. Just make sure to make some really good wallpapers. ;)
I'm very disappointed and upset by the fact that only legal resident of the united states can participate to your contest.
Lineage 2 can be bought legally in shop in France with all documentations inside the box in french (it's not importation).
I pay each month my subscription to your game as everyone, including legal resident of the united states. I play on your european server (Teon) so I really don't understand why you are planning a contest excluding some of your subscribers only because they are not legal resident of the united states.
And don't tell me it's because the laws are different in each countries, you're selling your game in shops according with the laws of differents countries so you can organised a contest for everyone, you've got lawyers give them some work...

I think that selling things is different then running promotions...the main thing that I see as the problem is that countries want it to be fair (Hence the English and French languages since not everyone knows one or the other let alone both)

There could also be some taxation restrictions, religous restrictions, content restrictions, and many many other topics that will restrict a promotion to be provided in multiple countries at the same time.

I'm with LC on this... Not like it was a major deception - not one more.

And SirE your avatar has a smugness in its arrogance that doesn't fit you very well I think.

All entries must be submitted in the following screen resolutions and be 72 dpi:

anyone know what dpi is?
Dots per Inch, it refers to the size each pixel will have once the picture is printed out.

72 DPI is the standard for web display, 300 for normal print, I think 1000something from professional print (I'm not sure there IS a professional print standard, I don't remember this bit too clearly).

There's no reason to restrict the DPI on entries really, but meh. :p

There's no reason to restrict the DPI on entries really, but meh. :p

hmm... diskspace...

more dpi = more info = more size per file
Wrong.

More pixels = more info = more disk space.

DPI however, if you resize something to fixed wallpaper dimensions, does not change the file size (only the size the file will be printed on if you don't reset it manually).
bah never did summit something like i was going to i made this coollooooolllo drawing in math of a treant holding 2 dark elves while light elfs where shooting it with arrows and stuff and moutians in background witha eye in the sky even had a waterfall yeah i would of won but 2 lazy i gues :p and scammer not workeing grrrr

Wrong.

More pixels = more info = more disk space.

DPI however, if you resize something to fixed wallpaper dimensions, does not change the file size (only the size the file will be printed on if you don't reset it manually).

How can you be wrong after you mentioned the first bit?

If your current image is 8.5x11in and 75dpi - which is 825x638 - and you change it to 150dpi, the resolution will be 1650x1276 ( while it remains 8.5x11in ) because you just doubled the ammount of pixels within the given space.
Last time I changed the DPI on anything its print size changed, not its pixel dimensions.

As you point out yourself - a picture of 800*600 pixels will have the same file size, no matter whether it's 150 DPI or 300. If you have pixel size rules, there's no point in restricting the DPI - that's only useful if you have a print size rule.
No... the document size would stay the same, but the file size will increase ( double? ) if you doubled the dpi. Doubling the DPI doubles the pixel dimensions. The document size is the print size.... not the file size. The file size is just the amount of storage space the given image takes up on your hard drive. You can change the dpi without affecting the pixel dimensions, but that is dependant on what program you use; and because Photoshop is the standard... it's rules apply first.

As for the wallpapers being 72 dpi, it's a standard for web content. It ultimately doesn,t matter, but it's a standard nonetheless.
You talk about changing the DPI...

But let's put it like this.

If you have a 800*600 picture in 300 DPI...

And one 800*600 picture in 150 DPI...

Which is larger?

That's right, they're both the same size. That means irregardless of the DPI, as long as the contestants meet the pixel size restricitons, there is no problem.

And to change DPI in photoshop without affecting pixel dimensions, all you have to do is copy and paste, make a new document with the right DPI and put it in. ¬_¬:

You must be 13 years of age or older to participate

I am a bit confused. The updater screen shows a sample with much blood. More than ingame i think. I don't mind displaying blood. But I don't have the impression this truly represents the game I am playing. This should be roleplay. In a fight the one that reaches 0 HP looses, no splatter needed.
Yeah.. that last bit... just admit that if you change the dpi, you change the pixel dimensions of the image, as well as the file size. You know you where wrong about that, SO JUST ADMIT IT SO I CAN GO TO SLEEP. I know you verified it yourself ( as that last bit shows ), just say you where wrong, so I can put it in my sig. We both knew that dpi doesn't change the file size, but we where talking about changing the DPI here.

By the way, you don't have to create a new file to change the dpi. After you change it to the prefered resolution, you manually adjust the pixel dimensions.. that's it.

I don't have the impression this truly represents the game I am playing

Maybe that's the game stabby is playing. I sure as hell know that's the game I am playing. Death too all who cross me, I say. You're lucky I am working on an image of the neigborhood Treasure Hunter, otherwise my Spellhowler would be paying you a visit... in all her sadistic glory.
I don't see your point...

The pixel dimension is what determines file size. So what does it matter what DPI the entries are in?

I haven't changed any DPIs in ages (darn printer broke :D ), so I'm not familiar withthe mechanism for doing so. All I know is that there is no bloody rason for it.

If you say it can be changed without affecting pixel resolution, that just makes me more right...

PS: What do you think I claimed?

And if you want to put me admitting I'm wrong in your sig, just keep reading... it's not that rare. In fact, head straight over to stratics...
Goody! Time for a recap.

DPI however, if you resize something to fixed wallpaper dimensions, does not change the file size (only the size the file will be printed on if you don't reset it manually).

Then I said...

If your current image is 8.5x11in and 75dpi - which is 825x638 - and you change it to 150dpi, the resolution will be 1650x1276 ( while it remains 8.5x11in ) because you just doubled the ammount of pixels within the given space.

At this point, we both understood that the document size would remain no matter what DPI you change it to... or I thought.

Last time I changed the DPI on anything its print size changed, not its pixel dimensions.

Changing the DPI changes the pixel dimensions automatically.... which in turn changes the file size. It does not change the printed document size.

As you point out yourself - a picture of 800*600 pixels will have the same file size, no matter whether it's 150 DPI or 300. If you have pixel size rules, there's no point in restricting the DPI - that's only useful if you have a print size rule.

Only I didn't say it will have the same file size... or pixel dimensions. I said the dimensions would double, and the file size would ( double? ), while the document size ( the size of the image when printed ) will stay the same.

You talk about changing the DPI...

But let's put it like this.

If you have a 800*600 picture in 300 DPI...

And one 800*600 picture in 150 DPI...

Which is larger?

What? Duh.... unless DPI changes the size of the pixels... the file sizes would be the same. However... if you tried to change the 800x600 with 150 dpi to 300 dpi, it would then change the pixel dimensions to 1600x1200 because you have just doubled the amount of dots/pixels.

WOEIHGSDL:KGFH

My point was that if you went ahead and tried to change the DPI, you would change the pixel dimension.

And to change DPI in photoshop without affecting pixel dimensions, all you have to do is copy and paste, make a new document with the right DPI and put it in. ¬_¬:

Right there... you verified my claims yourself... but you didn't actually say "Yeah... you where right", or "Yeah... I was wrong".

If you say it can be changed without affecting pixel resolution, that just makes me more right...

Yes... it is possible, but that's because I'm a madman with photoshop ( not really ). When you change the dpi... you change the resolution of the image... however... when you change the pixel dimensions.... the DPI stays the same. If you want to change the dpi without resizing the image, you have to uncheck constrain proportions and then manually define the dimensions again after you changed the dpi ( both pixel dimensions and document dimensions... because if you don't, while the image will be back down to the pixel dimesions you started with, the document size would have just been cut in half.... which would show up when you print. )

As for the need to change the resolution... you are right. It is useless. Just start off with what you need and it wouldn't be a problem.

As for stratics.... nah. [censored] is my home. Hell.. they gave me my own personal member group and name colour. Besides... I don't think the other L2 sites like [censored] people very much.
I go by probablyWrong on stratics, that's what I was trying to say. ;)

You confsued me with that long quote, so I think I was wrong although I never actually said anything wrong... I think?

I'm hella confused and we're both also right at any rate. o.O
Hm.

So where are we supposed to send the images? =p

Ive read the whole thing two times and missing it both times =x im working too much..
Mystril, is it possible that all players of Lineage 2 would submit artworks, but the rewards (for those that live outside the mentioned areas) to be ingame assets ?

I know Europe has a lot of good artists (especially Italy) , this is half a contest without europeans :P.

If not in this art competition, maybe a different one?
eeek... running out of time! *speed paint* heh :o gl everybody!
Bah.... working on the digital painting took entirely too long. I guess I will have to dumb it down and send it as a fan art submission since I missed the deadline ( I should have spent more time on it and less time playing O_o ).
Gah.. just barely got mine in. X_X Nowhere near where I hoped it would be, but I did my best in the time I had. :) Now I am nervous. >_<
that happened to you too? lol I had to rush the background...digital painting is still a bit frustrating to me, used to just using a brush on canvas
ah well...posted mine here (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/25471656/) (hope that wasn't against the rules). Hope to see everyone elses.
:eek:wow.. that's amazing! Now I'm twice as nervous.. thanks a bunch. *pout* heehee. ^_^
Thank you to everyone who sent in an entry! The submission period for the contest is now over and we will begin judging. Keep an eye out on the official site for an announcement of the winners soon. Thanks again!
