I think my timing on that "this is the point where.." was absolutely perfect. So now I'm KOS by this idiot and some self-important idiot named Boranis.

PS. If you don't understand what this is about, it's very likely you're in the segment I'll eventually end up insulting. It's nothing personal, per se, just that I'm a bit irritated by the fact that the playerbase consists mostly of 10-year olds whose only response to everything is empty words and pointless bluster.

You know why i say he is ok? When i first started playing on Teon i didn have anything, 0, nothing. Then i met flip and we were both not even lvl 20 and then he told me when he is lvl 20 i can have all his top NG stuff and he really gave me. He didnt want anything for that. For me, someone who didnt have anything at the beginning it was a great gift. Not everybody would do that, Flip did -.-
Oh, I just saw him spamming shout. It's not readily apparent from the screeny, I know, but this was about his name, not what he said before the pm session.
My personal grievances:
- People can't write whole words. Writing "u", contrary to popular belief, is not faster than writing "you", and "u" looks ******ed
- People use excessive abbreviations and smileys, just to say something even when they have absolutely nothing to say
- People spam their whatever-ads in shout 4-10 times, even in locations where no one has said anything in said channel in the past two hours (!)
- xXxXanotherlegolas09088XxXx-type names, names with numbers substituting numbers for letters, inane names like "thebackstabber" for dagger (fictional, I HOPE that one doesn't exist.. there's already a "tripleshot" HE)
- People who act tough, i.e. pretend to be " t3h l337357 pvp d00d 3v4" are unable to hold a conversation for longer than seven seconds without succumbing to childish smacktalk, empty threats, questionnaire about their oppositions sexual habits or some such.
I tend to amuse myself just randomly picking up people from the general chat and bait them a bit. So far I've been proven wrong twice out of a few thousand tries, which is kind of sad if you really think about it. I may come accross as an elitist bastard most of the time, but for [censored] sake, at least I'm an intelligent elitist bastard. (And yes, I do have a superiority thing going on, no self-proclaimed psychoanalyst need tell me so)

I am full of myself, I never claimed otherwise. I actually did say I'm an elitist, if my memory serves me right. And if you think I made a fool of myself, that's your problem. As I see it, it's fine to be a ******ed idiot who can't write and no one even blinks their eyes, but if you express opinions contrary to the general "who cares"-attitude you're labeled with whatever cusswords come to mind first.
As for the "hi" messages, it's fine to start with that, but if you pm me with that and just sit there waiting to see if I reply you'll probably never get a reply. Once you've established that I'm in game you can just as well directly state your business. If it's important enough that you really need me to see it (improbable) you can always send an in-game mail.

Of course I generalize. That follows from having too many experiences with people who think they're "l337". Me having a huge ego and whatever complexes has nothing to do with that, the only thing they do in this is make me occasionally speak up even though I know I'm at most misunderstood.
And think what you may, I never write off anyone before I've seen how they act, but it has been so far my experience that the inability to write whole words (not due to difficulties with the language, mind you, but instead a complete disregard for the language) in almost every case corresponds with the inability to actually talk about anything. If you think you can keep telling me how I am completely wrong without taking the time to get to know me (or wasn't that what you meant?) I doubt any of your claims here hold any real validity. I, as any human being, am working from the context of my experiences, and as it is my experiences (in the context of my perspective) have led me to the conclusions mentioned before.
As far as respect goes, it's earned, not given to everyone just because they happen to cross paths with me. That's like saying you must respect all elderly regardless of their demeanor just because they're older than you. That, of course, is what some people say, but very much not what I believe in.
And just for the sake of the record, I'll repeat again that yes, I am full of myself. Yes, I'm an [censored] occasionally. Yes, I do like to talk excessively even of the slightest grievances. If I am to believe you, I should be ashamed because I think there should be more people who can solve things with wit (no matter how dim) instead of immediately resorting to threats of bodily harm, and that I would advocate, if not perfect language, then at least language that's not twisted and mauled intentionally by people who should know how to write it but simply refuse to do so out of some weird belief that it's the way to go. I don't wish to meet people who are "cool", I wish to meet people who are calm, pragmatic and capable of speaking with more than one-syllabled guttural grunts, which shouldn't be too hard to ask.

Edit: Lost my train of thought, this text box is too small. I've seen you before, Lir, we've even partied, and I did see your pm.. And if the y, o and u keys are so far apart that you can't write them together in a word, how can you write "keyboard"? You could easily abbreviate that to "kb", which is a rather well-known expression and easily interpreted from the context even if it's not an official one. Seems to me that if you're able to write one long word, one with mere three letters shouldn't pose too much of a problem, even if you're writing with one finger. It's not about being practical, or even being lazy, it's implementing a form of phonetic (mis)spelling derived from SMS into a medium that doesn't need it.

Well, that sure is a way to act condescending, you sure are full of yourself (sarcasm, look it up in a dictionary). I don't need to re-edit my posts for typos, since I read what I type, and correct typos, misspellings and whatnot while making the post. I know that's probably a very alien concept to you, but some of us actually know how to work backspace. If I really need to edit typos, I usually insert an "Edit: typos" because believe it or not, I actually care for the correctness of my output. You can think what you will of that, but how is that any different from me saying I don't like people who don't care of the correctness of their writing, pray tell?
If the thread makes you laugh, it's served its purpose, even if you're not laughing with it, but at it. Either way that was sort of the point, even if you did miss it. I am truly sorry, however, that you wish so much for the death of the thread that you have to keep posting in it to comment on how much I can write.

I usually check the forums twice a day, before work and before sleep. It doesn't take that much time to write a post, although it seems you think that writing more that a few sentences equals to spending a day being a board warrior.

There seems to be the general concensus that it's quite fine to preach to people about them being apparently intolerant IF their opinions differ from that of the local majority. I'd point out, however, that I've merely expressed what I think and posted something I thought humorous. On the other hand certain individuals are unable to ignore a thread that seems to express something they can't understand, but instead feel the urge to come and tell me that I'm most definitely wrong and should convert my views to match with theirs. Otherwise they might get a headache, no less. But logic never was very popular among these kinds of people, and I'm used to being antagonized by people whose view of propriety and tolerance is that people who do not think like they do are not being proper or tolerant.

I fail to see how it is so weird that someone should care whether or not people use proper language. I consider it to be thoughtful, even, to extend enough consideration towards people you meet to make the effort of sounding and appearing civil. I do this with all the languages I know. I don't mean using perfect grammar or spelling, that would be too much to expect considering this is the european server, and not everyone speaks and writes English as their native language (neither do I, so I can hardly claim to be perfect with it), but rather not purposefully maul a language for no apparent purpose or gain. It's not like people can't just as easily write well, they just seem to choose not to, for some reason I can't figure out. I'm not the only one who thinks like this, I'm just uncharasterically vocal in my ..concerns.
I don't think I've said I'm constantly pestering someone on their language either, but I generally do make a passing note to people who try to address me with this "internet slang".
I long for a RP server, actually, because among the roleplayers a common tendency is towards good language. If that were to happen (hah, as if NC would ever do such a thing) you could be rid of me and my musings which seem to cause such distress to you :(
So far I've only seen two rationalizations for using the internet slang, and those are "it's faster" and now a completely new by Lir, "because everyone else does it". First one is debateable at best because for me it's slower to use than writing properly, because I'm used to writing whole words (comes with writing official documents, most likely), and just a matter of getting used to. And the second one.. Well, if you wish to appear uncivilized (this is again my opinion, I better make that clear before some houlier-than-thou person jumps at me once more :P ) just because everyone around you does, that's your choise, but I don't see why you must make an attempt at ridiculing someone who doesn't want to join the stupid masses, unless you're actually self-concious about making a foolish decision. Now, if you wish, you can actually try to argument an opposing case, although I'm rather convinced there will merely be more ridicule.

Browsed the forums while drinking coffee, then five hours of job hunting, a visit to library, watched a few shows off tv, played some L2 after nothing on TV, checked forums somewhere between the tv shows. Now going to bed after playing some more L2.. So yeah, I've been doing nothing but refreshing the forums all day to see you express how much you loathe this thread and posting in it, and still do. Just to show you, how l33t and bored I am, I wanna add, that on german keyboards the Y and Z are exchanged, not the X and Z :)
So our first line of letters looks "QWERTZUIOP". French keyboards are even worse, as they read "AZERTYUIOP".
In any case, I type "you" much faster than "U". I had a clannie for a while, who would abbreviate to the extreme, typing "B" instead of "be" even... so he did "abbreviate" two keystrokes with 2 keystrokes (he was always using CAPS letters for his short versions).
Actually, while I do claim to read and write english quite well, I still can read "you are an idiot" much faster than "U R N 1d107".
So bascially, if I see such short letter words in talk, it tells me something about the one talking... namely, that they do not care, if they are understood... and so I tend to ignore them.

I agree with that, or someone who asks: adena plix! It's very impolite indeed. Just ignore them and when they're starting pming something like: ADENA PLIX!11, just slice them.

Actually I do, as I am typing 10 fingers and am conditioned to type as I think.. and I do not think "u" I think "you", and so my fingers type "you".
Sure, if you are always using "u" instead of "you", you can type it faster, but I cannot. It is the same as if you would change your primary action bar after using it for 1 year. You would klick or press the wrong buttons all the time, even if the new arrangement is more "logical" for an outsider.
And I never said, that I were typing "U".. That other clanmember did and it was annoying me to no end, as he was absolutely unable to type any senstence without this abbreviations.
I am really happy, that in german, there is little possibility for such letter-for-word-exchanges.

I'm always amused how these self-claimed elite intellects seem to think that a fantasy world needs any real life restrictions or 'behaviour code'. The person claims he's an elitist, intellect, better than the rest sorta guy. But for god sake, he’s playing a fantasy game with animated pixels where people pretend to be an elf, orc or whatever, fighting big, bad meanies… Where the currency is called adena, where the word bot has an awful meaning and where people get a thrill if they get a weapon drop in front of their feet… Most of us ‘normal’ intellects are ‘playing’ these ‘games’ just to get away from the real life boundaries, hence the word fantasy (prolly not in his dictionary).
I write official documents everyday, kinda necessary for my job, not in english (as you might have noticed by the errors in my spelling) but I don’t feel the need to correct kids in a game about how to use their vocabulary or how to express themselves. A mmorpg is the closest to a ‘free’ world anyone will ever experience, who are you to comment people on how to communicate?

Yes, there is an ignore function, but that doesn't work for local, shout or trade. There is of course the option of turning at least shout and trade off, which I usually do in Giran anyway, but I don't want to stay blind to everything happening around me, especially when hunting.
Now, I don't correct anyone in-game, but I do occasionally indirectly prod them about it to see whether it's just laziness or actual poorness of mind.
And as far as I see it, the problem is more or less exactly that people do not play their alter-egos. I doubt there are many elves (hypothetical situation: elves exist) that speak like this: "rofl u g0t pwnz0rz0r3d". I don't see any relevance to the topic that this is indeed a fantasy game, this is in the end just another medium through which people interact.
My right to comment on people's communication skills comes from the same source as your right to comment on my opinions, more or less. I feel that it's in fact polite to at least try to express yourself without resorting to obscure acronyms or mangled spelling, or do you think it were nice if your grasp of English was tentative, and everyone around you used some weird slang you couldn't even understand (rhetorical, of course, most people learn this improper form faster than good English these days, "thanks" to internet)? Just like it's polite to speak in a language everyone present understands, if possible.
And what if I am a self-claimed elitist or intellectual? At least I'm not the one writing like a pre-teen in SMS after getting "******" from one cider, with those being the choises I'd rather take the former. It's funny, too.. By the very (wiki) definition of an internet troll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll) any post can be called trolling and be right about it. Considering the fact that if a post contains an opinion, someone is 100% certainly going to be offended by said post, and that makes the post offensive, no?

I'm glad, that someone started such topic, I guess the point of saying (typing) something is to share information you have, so if one care about being understood, he/she should at least try to be understandable. Of course, there are a lot dependencies on situations, f.e. in pvp one usually don't have much time to be full-speaker.

And just to correct your little mistake, I didn't create the thread to get a negative reaction, but just to get a reaction. I don't know if you can tell the difference, but it's there. The fact that the reactions have been mostly negative doesn't as such reveal anything about my purposes, and as such you fail for trying to state your opinion as an absolute fact while whining about my conduct. Being an attention [censored] has nothing to do with wanting to post something and having someone react to it, after all, that's the whole point of posting something on the boards, to get people to react and respond to it. And just to correct your little mistake, I didn't create the thread to get a negative reaction, but just to get a reaction. I don't know if you can tell the difference, but it's there. The fact that the reactions have been mostly negative doesn't as such reveal anything about my purposes, and as such you fail for trying to state your opinion as an absolute fact while whining about my conduct. Being an attention [censored] has nothing to do with wanting to post something and having someone react to it, after all, that's the whole point of posting something on the boards, to get people to react and respond to it. You're obviously just irrationally annoyed by my opinions and feel a need to keep coming back to try and prove that I'm not actually a thinking person and that the opinions that so twist your guts are nothing but random trolling. That's all fine with me, if you can't deal with someone thinking different from your POV, it's not really my issue, it's yours.

Reading this thread i was asking myself why can a discussion come to this point.
First of all seems the the post is not born to discuss "why" and "how" bad uses of language.
The title call of "idiots" as the first post.. only after some writing it start to clear the idea to discuss, but at that time
seems people come already mind-set to flame.
Just to making clear.. write "you are an idiot" or write 4 books in perfect english to say to someone is an idiot in indirect way make
for me only 1 difference:
the first person say clear in face his feeling.. the second is like a coward that think of himself as a superior being, he thinking people have to use
own time to read 4 book to find being insulted.
That to say that writing in perfect language, use more phrases doesn't make one better.. an "idiot" that write a book is "idiot" also if write 2 words.

To stay on topic.. there is difference in my eyes from using short sms-word to speedup conversation and use the 1337 language.
Chat ingame is more like a voice conversation than a forum/mail writing. It's more like speaking.. it's the technical media that make we write.. but i think that for many people is like "listening" more than reading... and "speaking" more than writing.
For me was a little nightmare trying to understand chat first time here.. what can i see now is:
- exchange word with character that sound-like.. you->u, be->b, "you are" -> "ur" or "your" (that make me crazy "your" have different meaning instead of "you are").
- abbreviation: thanks -> txs, bye bye -> bb, Want to sell -> WTS, no problem -> np
then words deformation that,for some reason, to an english native seems cool like please->pls->plz/plx
I can see all of this acceptable. I mean.. for me is a little difficult but i undestand the need of using all of this.. and many times the use of smiles is so good
to work around the limited expression of the toon in game. The game limits in feeling expression is evident.
Different thing is the l337!!11 n00b language.
Everyone is free to speak as he want.. but the using of this type of speak is not the meaning of young people or stupid people or cool people.
Is like what was the punk music when it borns.
I was thinking only younger use it to feels somewhat cool.. after sometime i change my mind. Is not used only by kids.. (yes, more simple find a kid using that) and
is not used only to be cool.
Is used like a message.. "i'm nasty.. i'm big.. i'm killer.. i'm too good for you.. stay away.. i rule!!!!".
Childish.. and not for true age.. but for the insecurity of many people. They don't need this really.. what they need is only a power character.
It's like they need everytime someone to be in comparison.. that type of language is like saying "i can".
What is disturbing is the will to be offensive at all cost, in every situation... most of the time ignore them is the best solution.
Other time need to do some dirty work.. but for my mind the better way is simply doing it and go away.
For the action to send private messages to l33t people or to "u" people... well.. i don't agree. I want a normal conversation if someone want to speak with me.. and i try to use my poor english to have that conversation.. but there is no point forcing other people conversation.. only get some enemy without any true result.

If everyone is free to speak as they wish, then shouldn't everyone be free to hold whatever opinions they wish as well, and state those opinions whenever they feel necessary? While you do have valid considerations there, and it's actually probably one of the very few non-troll messages here, it's still a bit personal, don't you think? I mean, if you're going to lecture me about veiled insults and such, do try to avoid using the same thing yourself.
Perhaps you're right, however I find that writing the whole word doesn't take so much more time than writing the sms-form of it that it'd be actually worth destroying my spelling abilities for some imagined gain. I may be a rarity among people (English is my third language, just FYI), but I like to learn languages well when I learn them, and that includes proper spelling and grammar. Once you learn to write properly, you'll write as fast, if not faster, using full words than trying to learn this txt-tlk style.
I can't claim to have perfect grammar or even spelling in English, but I still prefer to use - and see others use - the proper words. The purposeful mauling of the language for no actual benefit whatsoever I don't get, even in sms you can avoid it by wording your message differently. If you need more than what you can fit in the 160 characters, it's likely you'll do less work if you just call instead.
For the sake of argument, in a heat of battle it may sometimes be prudent to express yourself as short as you can, but why on earth would you use the same form in casual conversation as well? Only reason I've been able to come up with is that these people really don't know any other way to write (poor teachers, says I), because they've never bothered to learn, or don't possess the brains to learn (of which the former would make them even more stupid than the latter, if they have the capability and still waste it...). So despite your venture into my character in your post I'll still stay by my initial assumption, that people who write like that are idiots.

I suggest that you get a life, and read all your previous posts here to see how wonderfully you manage to contradict yourself. I'm sure your attempt at "saving face" after posting how much you hate to post in "these kinds of threads" seems all fine to you, but I'm not convinced yet. Maybe you'll be bringing the thread back up from the dead in a year or so still.
