Creating Characters That Breathe – The Background

Introduction

Our characters are stories. They live to excite, thrill, horrify, and entertain. They live to create a suspension of belief. They live for wonder and magic.

In the land of Aden, our characters can come to life. You want them to appear living among the people, laughing and crying and breathing and thinking, as if they have always been there long before you came along to the creation screen.

This is the essence of role-playing.

In this guide, I hope to give you a better understanding of the creatures of role-playing in Lineage 2 far beyond what may appear at the surface. You will learn how to create a character that breathes, thinks, and speaks as if he has always done so and always will.

This is meant to be a reference, and a guide expressing my own opinions. I am sure you can create your own unique character by going against everything I say, but this is still a useful guide for those looking to make their characters more realistic and dimensional or those just starting to role-play. At the end of each chapter, you will find exercises to help with each part of the building process. If you have any questions, please contact me here: [email protected]

The Background

Your character came from somewhere. What, you thought he came from the creation screen? Nope. He was a baby and a child, and he had parents and a history and a first kiss and a first kill. Start to think of your character as a real person and you’ve got a pretty good start.

So you’re there at the creation screen, going through the five hairstyles and two facial expressions. Imagine your character on a sunny day, sleeping in his home at night, running alongside his friends, even mouthing off to his parents (or maybe he was an orphan), or eating breakfast. (Does he like ham and eggs or raw keltir meat? Does he like to eat radish soup or human flesh? You decide)

I will guide you through this process with our newly made female dwarf, because she has a cute mouth and smile and I already like her and just because. It’s not really the race or class you pick, not at all, it’s the personality that you put behind it. As you think about these questions, try to create an air of mystery for your character, a history that comes out in his traits.

Now ask yourself these questions regarding your character. Below each question I will put an example that I got from our female dwarf.

What is your character’s gender, age, race, class, and name?

Female, 232 years of age (young for a dwarf!), dwarf artisan, lets call her Blossoms

What physical attributes does your character have? (Make this one as detailed or as brief as you like, since you already have an avatar for physical description. Physical description should have more “personality” than just eye color, hair color, etc, but things that actually describe the character)

Blossoms has long, wiry red hair, with the appearance of an untamed animal. She has wolf eyes that shine red in the dark and leathery skin from working all day at the forge. Blossoms wears chains of flowers as bracelets and headdresses. She has a scar on her knee.

Where was your character born?

Blossoms was born in Elmore, in a small cottage on a mountain. In summer, the fields would be full of flowers. In autumn, the sky would turn the color of red and gold. The town was nearby, where Blossom’s parents went off to sell their homemade wares.

Who were your characters parents and what attributes did they have?

Elle and Barry Maphre met underneath an Elmore mountain when they became trapped in a cave-in. With their courage and strength they managed to survive, pulling themselves out of the rubble and promising undying love to each other. They were married and had two children; Lily their firstborn, and Blossoms their baby. They survived by selling homemade wares and crafts made at their homemade forge. Elle is an entrepreneur and a ferocious haggler. Barry has become a drinker in his old age but his loveable and kind, liking to shower gifts on his two-dwarven children.

What is your character’s fatal flaw?

Jealousy. Blossoms cannot stand her older sisters success because she believes it is falsely gained. Jealousy drives Blossoms to get a job working at the forge and even forces her to steal from the dwarven guild she is a member of. Blossoms cannot stand that Lily is a flawless craftswoman, beautiful, has many suitors, and has the full attention of her parents. Jealousy drives Blossoms to revenge and greater and greater risks.

What is your character’s saving grace?

Mercy. Blossoms shows kindness and graciousness even to her enemies, and showers her friends with gifts and love. She finds that it is hard to hate anyone, except for her sister and parents, of course, because she believes there is an inherent goodness in everyone.

What challenge did your character have to overcome that has shaped her as a person?

Blossoms was held hostage for several hours at the hands of Dark Elves with her sister and three other dwarven companions when they had gone out for some sport hunting. In the freezing cold, huddled together against the wind beneath the blades of the dark elves, Blossoms had a choice to make. She could escape and leave her friends behind, or fight and overcome. She chose to fight the dark elves, but it cost her dearly. She almost had to amputate her arm because of wounds and a dark elf mage burned “holes” into her brain, so that Shillen can now come through and whisper dreams. At the expense of saving her sister and other companions; she is forever tortured and can no longer sleep at night without intensely painful dreams.

Who does your character love?

A human in her guild, a rogue who does not seem to notice her affections. Blossoms becomes painfully shy around the human rogue and cannot express her feelings. She is forever tortured trying to speak to him, and when she does can only mutter a few words. She does not think he will ever notice her because is only a small dwarven girl, and he a hero of great strength.

Who does your character hate?

Blossoms finds it hard to hate anyone except for her sister, with whom she is perpetually locked into a battle with to get honor and praise from their parents. Though Blossoms hates her sister, she still loves her on a primal level and will do anything for her even though they sometimes cannot stand to be in the same room.

What is your character’s goal(s) and why?

Blossoms has only a few goals. First, she wants to become a master warsmith so that she can win approval from her parents. She wants to get the love of the human rogue. And, she wants to find a way to stop Shillen’s curse from keeping her up at night.

Who will prevent your character from reaching these goals?

Lily, Blossoms sister, who tries to sabotage Blossom’s attempts to be truly great, and Shillen, who needles Blossoms until she is so tired she cannot think straight.

Give your character three or more minor flaws.

A determination that can push everything else out of focus and make Blossoms lose touch with reality, a hot headedness when haggling or trying to deal with others who don’t agree with her, and a cloud of sadness that seems to drift around her.

Give your character three or more fun “quirks.”

Likes to get crazy drunk while hunting, likes to sing to herself, likes to jump on people when they are not looking, likes to find stray wolves and kitties and nurse them back to health.

You can see how a character begins to form just by a simple background; now the rest is up to you. Breathe life into your characters; give them a shape and form and attitude.

Now all you have to do is write their story.
The roleplayer hasn't been a very popular group on Lionna, afte certain events at the Wishing Well. I wasn't there at the time, so I won't comment, but this does address the conflict between roleplayers and the non roleplayers that has been around since the time when people mocked the D&D players in the comic book stores.

I have heard several comments from rp haters, that are all encompassing. "Roleplayers are carebears, roleplayers are noobs," and the worst, "All roleplayers think the same."

Some people would like to see all roleplayers dead. I know several people who would also like to see all dwarves dead. But the fact is, neither group is going away. You can try to kill all the dwarves in Giran, like trying to kill all rpers that go to the Wishing Well. But the fact is, there are dwarves in Dion, Gludio, Gludin, in the fields, necropolis's, catacombs, dungeons, and warehouses. Dwarves are not going anyway. The same with roleplayers. There are several famous roleplayers that post on l2rpa.org and on the official forums, but these are not the only ones.

I find roleplayers everywhere; sometimes just out hunting, or in town selling goods, and I am finding more everyday, people who keep to themselves or scream loudly in the shout channel. Roleplayers who are in clans are hunting quietly in the fields, clanless. I have met a deaf elf, cheery dwarves with tempers sweet as syrup, drunkards who like to fight with a flagon in hand, and lonely killers who stalk and meld into the shadows.

Some roleplayers I love, some I don't care for. We are a group as diverse as the whole band of pvpers, socializers, and grinders. We often disagree, but we are a tight-knit band nonetheless. We seek each other out and create a world that we can all love to live in. Sometimes this meaning the very real danger of losing experience by a stalking orc or elf seeking vengeance.

I think a lot of roleplayers have been killed for saying "thy" or been called a noob just because their thoughts and playing style is different. Those who cannot understand roleplayers are as narrowminded as those who say "All roleplayers are the same," and "All roleplayers are carebears." Because many of us aren't carebears. A lot of us would kill you so much as look at you.

Roleplay haters, we aren't going away, and you can't stop us. We play this game to escape, to dream, to go into a world parallel to ours. Our characters create stories and pictures and a diverse, rich culture.

If you hate me, there are many willing to back me up. Kill a roleplayer alone in the field, there are a hundred others. We aren't going away, we aren't going to conform. We love this game and we have the right just as any pvper to play it how we wish.

- Woofie
where is the wishing well?
It's on Lionna. Ask anyone of us on server, and we'll tell you more!
Though a lot of people know me as a good advocate for the roleplayers; there is still one boundary that I haven't crossed. After having played a blind person, a mute person, an insane person, a person raised by wolves, and a person enslaved by orcs; all great and fun characters to play, there is still one more thing I need to accomplish

No out of character.

Yes, you heard me. no Wtb SS, no buff meh plz, no Lfg. Pure, straight roleplay that never falters.

The challenge:

Create a character bio and new character
Stay completely in character as I level, hunt, sell, and pvp
Interact with non-roleplayers in character as well, and try to cope with them.

And as an added bonus I will:
Strip and delete character if I go out of character, whether level 5, or 45.

I dub this the "Keltir Project." And will predict that it will have some interesting results with other people as well as amusing anecdotes. Got to love those amusing anecdotes. :D

Comments? I'll post the character bio and names as soon as I can.
Meh that's way too much since you cannot do a lot of in character stuff in games. I prefer to acknowledge that every character out there is familiar with in game terminology. Everyone is aware that HP represents your life force, that MP is your pool of magic power and so on.

Works better that way than trying to pretend that you CANT see your in game hud... I mean come on; it's silly...
Appreciate much for the time you spent on the guide woofie... Now, get your princess mononoke avatar back up :D

Everyone's going to have their own style of RP, but this is a good start. I see myself as the character themself, but I don't deny the slang used in the marketplace.
Ahh, well I gave up and went back to partial rp. It is possible to be completely roleplay, but expect to be dubbed as a loser, moron, person with no real life, and possibly pked for it.
:(

I was really looking forward to seeing the results of this. I'm sorry it was so disappointing for you.
Maybe I will try again at a later date - but I've had too many bad experiences for the time being.
Were you doing this alone?

Perhaps if someone did it with you it might not be so negative.
Yes, I was. I don't really know many people who would want to take time to level another character, and my rl brother isn't much of a roleplayer (He tries - I had to laugh when his orc monk said "Greetings, my lord. Isn't this a perfect day for hunting with thy companions?) But he goes out of character too much.
I wrote down a biography of my char, about 20 000 words. Great post, really! Sure needed some guidelines, and I got it from here.
Else, I always try to give my characters life. I can't understand ppl that run around and kill/quest/whatever with something that just aswell could be a cardboard box. Of course yer char is restricted to a certain amount of details, but that doesn't mean it can't have a history or certain li***oals :)
The point of my char is to kill mobs get lvls then get to end game so as i can pvp all day long. I dont need to make up a history for it, it doesnt need explanation :p and i bet i have as much fun as you role players in-game, if not more as i spend time online instead of behind a desk with paper and pencil writting bio's
Its not hard to udnerstand, just here for the game content thats enough for me, i dont need to add more content.
If you don't like roleplay then don't post in a roleplay thread.

It's common sense.
Talking in reference to the poster above, who couldnt udnerstand why people didnt role play, i provided my answer, ok?
I've been having a bit of a problem coming up with ideas for my characters, as there is no real reference to how normal life goes about in Aden.

For example I don't know how old certain races get? What is normal behavior for each race? What is a normal life growing up?

Without these kind of common concepts to build upon it's expected to have a lot of conflicts between people trying to RP.

That is unless there is some kind of reference that I've missed.

All I've seen is the "creation" story here on this site. Outside of that I have no idea how the races think and live.

Anyone have some suggestions on this? Specifically DEs.
I've actually requested some further in-depth information from the powers that be. However, it seems as though the Dark Elves live in a theocratic society (evidenced by the Tetrarch Council and Hierarch Mitraell), but are for the most part not divided along gender lines.

Dark elves appear, for the most part, to have dual deity worship, serving both Gran Kain and Shilen. Day to day live seems to stem around politics and religious service, though there is plenty of room left open for interpretation.

Elves and dark elves, while not immortal, seem to be a long-lived race. While no certainties have been laid down, I would not doubt they could live hundreds or thousands of years.

Until we find more information regarding specifics and timeline facts (something that has been and is continuing to be researched), this is about it.

One important thing to note is that dark elves are not drow, which is a common misconception.
Thank, jkoster. So I would take it that it's wrong to assume that DE's are evil and heartless. More miss-understood?

I wonder if there is more information on Korean sites that could be translated?
Several of the dark elves are evil and heartless. However, I personally believe that comes from worshiping the god of destruction and the goddess of death.

Of course, there are many angles to use when spinning those traits, including "Death is a holy state, in which everything eventually is found. It is no more or less evil than life." or "Death is an end to the suffering of life, the evils of the so-called goddess of Light and Justice."

I am of the mind that good and evil are not so clear cut in Lineage 2. If you look at the various religions that are presented to the players, each has its high points and low: there is no good, no evil, simply shades of grey.
Thanks again. You've been a great help!
To add a few random tidbits, which are implied rather than stated directly:

Most farmers live away from their villages, often in dangerous areas (check for random farms scattered across various levelling grounds, a few of them with present NPCs). They hire adventurers for protection, but it can likely be assumed that every farmer's son and daughter is taught the use of at least some basic weapons (see also the militia of Floran).

Elves (either race) don't farm - they hunt and gather. Most human delicacies are also hunted for (see food series of quests in Dion).

Orcs get old, likely at least one if not several hundred years old (implication of the class change quest).

Dwarven life seems divided into several parts - women seem to persue their guild carreers before child-rearing, men afterwards. A lot of people say that the girlish figures we see are grown dwarven women, but in fact if you check, you'll find that there are some older looking dwarf NPCs around ( a young woman (http://line2soubi.jog.buttobi.net/npc/ndwf002c.jpg) and a mid-aged woman (http://line2soubi.jog.buttobi.net/npc/ndwm100a.jpg) exist). Since the guilds are run by elders, there are few female dwarves working in positions of high responsibility.

If you look closely, quest texts and placement of NPCs and buildsings can give away much. : )

Nah! You are not wrong but not quite right neither. I only wrote background stories while playing roleplaying servers. It was sometime a pain as i was forced to, to play the server.

But personnaly, the way i play is partially RP but not quite roleplaying. I don't know if some people do the same as me, since i've been doing that as common way of playing since i started making characters with a name that started with a capital letter and followed by something that one would consider a REAL NAME(exemple; i've started playing on L2 lately, my characters are Nashtak(my MAIN and MAIN name i always use ;) and Thanator(Out of inspiration for a male character name, i looked up my D&D player guide book, that i never actually used since i got it since nobody plays it but my far away cousins and also because i dont want to go in those comic stores and stuff). I got myself to think that people that uses name as Gtdswrs, Naruto343 or <<IMM@pWnu>> ruins the game in a way. Even though i play with the same people most the times, it's always fun to meet someone that you respect or level with, then end up in your buddy list WHEN that person as a realistic name, it already gives him a kind of <<personnality>>. Exemple, my anciant guild leader of Ragnarok Online (private server) whose name was Madeskus. Everyone called Mades and he was a nice guy. If his name would have been someting like RockTheEmp, it would have felt totally different, as talking to an... avatar and not a real person. Because, believe it or not, the guy behind the keyboard IS A REAL PERSON with problems, feelings, etc. Same goes on the forum. You can get an idea of who somebody is on his avatar pics.

Now that i got carried away with the names point, let me get back to the real subject. I don't know if other peoples think or do as me but when i create a character, well first i usually have decided what class i would be depending on the skills, attributes, etc. but also by instinct. I also think up what will i do with such a character. Nashtak, which is low lvl Elven Knight so far, will soon be a Templar. His main purpose will be to defend castles and buffs/heal his allies during sieges. So basically, we can see Nashtak as a defender, combat healer or even armored medic. It's up to you. Now, i create a character. What is the best apparance for a templar. I took the face with eva's sign on the forehead and long white hair (which i changed for something shorter later on because of so many people that has choosen THAT color and haircut combinaison... **** you sephiroth). I wouldn't choose that face for an assassin-like job since i find this out of character.

Now that i'm ingame as an elf, i just start as a beginner and do the quests because IT'S SO MUCH FUN compared to grinding! And there is also that feeling of accomplishing something as when you do every dungeons and secrets in Final Fantasy. And more i do quests and learn about the history, more i addapt myself to it. I kind of get use to the <<Dark Elves are enemies>> idea. I have to, since i'm a templar that cares about his village and kind, like every templars . ;)

I also dislike the botters that attacks the sentinels to lose xp, it's so out of place in the beautiful village of elves. Even tho that doesn't have much to do with RP since it's something people do as players, not characters. I kinda dislike the gatekeeper since it prevents people from walking on the map and use the boats. Kinda make the Player Killing system bad as you can't attack travalers and stuff. And i would like it if people would travel using their own 2 feets or even the boats. More socializing and anecdotes. Wouldn't it be nice if a bunch of people come and force people to jump off the boat unless they pay? Much more of a story to laugh about with your friends eh? Well better then how many freaking monster you grinded (BORING). It could have ended up in a merciless fight or a swimming escape. :D Finally, it makes the whole world look smaller, and i like big maps . And i also prefer when people talk normally. I don't care if they talk with old expression as <<thy>> and stuff. It's funny from time to time. But what i mean is, the least sms language possible! You people in giran using <<WTB SoW>> all the time looks dead! And deads are boring! Don't be surprise if i stop at you one day and say something totally random then run away. Well you should be surprised, what are the odds (I play on Bartz btw).

As you can see. It's more like a way of playing the game so you can <<maximize>> the alternatives and ending having more fun, more little stories (like that time on Guild wars, when our party got attacked by quite a lot of huge werewolf... one could have heard them running from far away as we couldn't see them yet... that was crazy). I know a lot of people that play games where they grind all the time. I can't stand it. I'm a not an RPer really, but when they say that those people are no-lifes losers, i can't help but believing that they are worst, cliking on a monster all days long... and enjoying it!? A game should have many alternatives and this is a way to make even more. My goal is to join a particuliar guild and make it win. Stay loyal to it. What is yours?

PS: This might have been a little out topic. Just wanted to precise my way of <<RPing>>. As the author said, you can have your bit of RP without following his guide by the word, and it's totally normal!
It seems to me, Nashtak, that you would fit in quite well with the folks over at L2RPA. A lot of the RP crowd are not hardcore RPers, but just like you: they look for immersion more than biographies, they look for immersion instead of in-depth plotlines.

I think you have a real good handle on what RP is. It's not just how knowledgeable you are in the world, but how you find your enjoyment and immersion.

PS: This might have been a little out topic. Just wanted to precise my way of <<RPing>>. As the author said, you can have your bit of RP without following his guide by the word, and it's totally normal!

No that wasnt off topic at all, and besides you are describing exactly how i'd like to do RP in this game !
This one should be stickied somewhere :p
Actually, it is a sticky somewhere over at L2RPA.

I think.
I don't have specific background for my characters, but each has a distinct personality. So when I'm playing Paksenarion (honorable, straightlaced, loyal to the end, yadda yadda - got hit too much on the head as a young tank, stubborn), I certainly react and respond differently than when playing Yeasmine (she's 'easy' to get along with and drifts along with just about anyone who makes her feel good ... Constantly *****es at Paksenarion tho') ... or Jesterman (nasty DE) and very differently when I'm on Franz playing Oasis (hot and wet) or my other bad girls.

Otherwise it's just too ... too ... grind. Gotta put the "face" on.
Thank you for all the information of the world in which we live and breath in. I like the idea of knowing a lot about the world of Aden and Elmore. However I cannot say I am a decent role player :P. I'm to silly I guess. Lol....
