Hey guys, I'm still pretty new the the server, and I'm not even sure if I want to stay on Erica or not yet, but I'm having trouble choosing a class and was wondering if any of you would help me out. Usually on any game I play, I'm always an assassin, but this time I want to be something different. I've already made an assassin but I know that it's not what I want to continue with. I'm interested in making an orc because I haven't seen many female orcs so far and they are just too cool! lol This is what I'm stuck between: Orc Tyrant/Destroyer or a Dark Elf Spellhowler. Any help would be greatly appreciated! =D
My general advise is that you pick the type of character with the style that fits you best. You will have to stic with it for a long time, and eventually the next chronicle will change the balance between the classes, so it's not too wise to choose by the ability to "pwn" others in PvP.
Orc fighters are pretty good DD classes, very versatile and certainly not underpowered. Their draback is that they are not really specialzed on one role. Destroyers can be tanks, DD, AoE fighters, archers. Tyrants can be pullers, tanks, DDs, archers to a certain extend. But I don't want to go into the details there too much. :)
The spellhowler is certainly the better choice for PvP, although not the "best". Compared to orcs the playstyle of nuker is very limited to... well... nuking.
Hope that helps a bit with your class decision problems... :)
And what exactly is your problem with erica? Most of the other server are similar when it comes to griefing, cheating and smack-talking. The newbie areas are deserted by default (not too many new players, but this game is running for two years already!) just wait until you get closer to Dion, with the newbie benefits you should get there pretty fast... But you should know that only your first char that you level past lvl 6 will get those (super helpful) benefits... if you already had those benefits I suggest you keep leveling that toon, without the boosts it can be rather tedious.
Good luck and happy hunting,
Cal
PS: Never give your gear to anyone unless you want to lose it... never ever. :) Beware of scammers.
Lol ya I know the possibilities to complain are endless... ;)
I hoped for a reply like: "The orc lands are so empty." or "All items are so expensive in player shops." Those are not exclusively Erica problems and could be dismissed qickly. :p
In fact, as I said once, the only different server when it comes to bad things is Teon, which has the same bot problem as the other servers, but multiplied ten times.
About the class... Well, it depends on what you want to do. I don't know about PvP, since my class is not the best recommended for that and I'm not up to that type of gameplay, but nukers like the spellhowler are pretty good for solo hunting, and the orcs... Well, any orc fighter looks like a Panzer tank to me :D
Anyway, the best way to choose a class is to think how do you like to play. If you like being in the front line hitting something, a tank or a damage dealer is best for your gameplay, while if you like staying behind, nukers for damage or healers/buffers for support are the best. And if you want to live dangerously, an archer would be the right choice :)

why not take the complete opposite as a assasin. Try healer
:) .
its more fun then you think, althoug soloing can be a bit harder, they're alwasy welcome in a party.
But like said before, shose wisely what you want to be, you'll spend lots of hours being him/her. And if you dont like it, well an divorce is always painfull, but somethimes the best to do.
i'm very new to the game to, arrived at erica a week ago. (lv 17 now), and i've no compains, except a few high level ........ who PK me for fun.
well, you have to start as a mistic, no ? After that you can chose ? I'm a human mistic, but want to go the healer-way,
my skills i chose go that road too. (except the party-heal-skill, becaus, at my level, i solo a lot, so to start, i don't forget the offensive spells (only windstrike and icebold)
why did you ask ?
Well, I've decided to go with orc, althought I'm not really sure on Destroyer or Tyrant. Mainly because I can't really see a huge difference. Tyrants use claws right? And Destroyers mainly swords? If that's the case I think I'd rather be a Tyrant as long as they are both powerful.
I've also decided to stay at Erica, and Cal I didn't really have any problems with the server, I just wasn't sure...
The answer to your question is Necromancer. You might as well just re-roll now.
All of those other classes are nice suggestions, but after getting killed a few times from Necros in the open field, you're going to say to yourself, "Aw man, I knew I should have just hopped on the bandwagon and gone with that completely over-powered PvP class."
PvE is nice, but let's face it: there's going to come a time when you're going to want to kill someone in-game, and the Necro is the best class to do it with. They're decent levelers too, even if they are expensive.
i would have to go with spellhowler theyre very nifty :)
Yes they are.
But I'm a Lvl 76 SpellHowler, and as good as we are, Necros are stronger. Necros are basically SpellHowlers with better PvP skills and better surviveability.
I have to agree with SDog on this one. I also had an SH at one point.. and yeah, even though shes strong as hell.. super strong spells and such... i seemed to get beat up by SpS and necros in pvp. Necros r awesome because they have the ability to get massive magic power when they have low hp. That AND their skills are more based on PvE/PvP than Spellhowlers. If you want to go the mystic route for nuking.. i would recommend Necro.

But you have to put up with an ugly zombie trailing you around! :(
Right now I think the favourites ladder would be:
nukers: necro/sps/sh/sorc
archers: he/ps/sr
orc mages: ol/wc
misc buffers: bd/sds
buffers: se/prophet
healers: bishop/ee
The higher in the list you are, the more beneficial you are to the pvp, the more to the left you are in a category, the more beneficial you are still.
And then you go down a few miles under that list and you get all the melee dds. It doesn't mean you'll be useless as a melee DD in the sense that you shouldn't even bother going to sieges - it just means that anyone would take any class on the above list before you because chances are you're gonna end up being dead before you even reach any of the above classes.
While the statements about the Necromancer may be true, let us remember one thing...
There are many ways to play this game.
Not everyone is into PvP.
Not everyone wants to hold a castle.
Not everyone feels they must be the UltraUberest of all.
If Femm wants to roll an orc, so be it.
How about we help her out with information about the class she wants to play, not the class that we think she should play.
I would happily offer up anything I knew regarding orcs, but I've not played one past 21, so I would not be the best source of info.
If I were new to this game and chose a class based on a very limited frame of reference, I'd be grateful if someone offered an accurate assessment of the classes to help expand my point of view. Femme is going to have a limited point of view just because he/she isn't as experienced. That's all. Nothing more - nothing less.
When I went DA as my subclass, a bunch of people tried to dissuade me from going that way. In the end though, they still respected my decision because, hey, I did level an SH to 76, an SE to 62, and a prophet to 56, so I knew what I was getting myself into. After all, it's a subclass. You don't get a subclass by being a noob.
But if you're completely new to the game, you're not going to know as much about it regardless of how much you may have read. He may end up loving or hating his Orc - who knows. But it isn't inappropriate to provide information about the relative merits of each class to help educate him about the game. After all, some of the input here may help him find a class that he might enjoy playing even more than an Orc. Taliesyn's comments were especially good. (And if you're going to re-roll, it's better to do it sooner rather than later.)
IF he ends up hating his Orc (it is possible) and eventually rolls a Necro, he would say "Why didn't anyone tell me how awesome Necros are?!" At least now someone can say, "Well. Actually, a few people did."
Besides, Necros are far faster levelers than any Orc class anyway.
Ya lot's of SP needed group hugs lately... dunno where exactly I caught them... but look! Even they like you! Much better than me tho. :-/ Well saves me the trouble of weeding them out.
Take good care of them but don't pet them too much.

Cal
LMAO.
What are you talking about?
This is the problem with these boards. Someone new comes along, and instead of giving him information that could actually be useful to him, people are tripping over themselves to see who can be nicer to the guy. Not that that in and of itself is a bad thing, but the problem is that 99% of the advice that was offered was completely vacuous. Taliesyn's commentary was probably the best of all the stuff stated here, but everyone's treating the statements "Play what you like," and "Choose a toon that will match your gameplay" like they're coming from King Solomon, when that advice is worthless because it's already implied.
He's asking for information and opinions so he can make an informed decision - he's not asking for a housewarming party.
I'd like anyone to offer up the name of ANY Orc that's reached 75 without getting caught for violating the EULA. I'm not aware of any. (I'm not saying that they don't exist, but I know a lot of people in this game, and I don't know any 75 Orcs.) Orcs level as slow as hell. I know Orcs that have played their toon regularly since open beta, and those guys still haven't hit 75. The rest of them quit. As races go, Orcs and Dwarves are a lot more difficult to level than the others. Granted, maybe the new guy doesn't care about leveling, but he didn't explicitly say that, and unless he does it's safer to assume that it is important to him.
But instead of people saying, "Dude. You might want to consider these factors before you finalize your decision," you guys are trying to see who can send him the biggest Hallmark card. I don't know anything about the new guy or what he wants out of L2. He might want to be an upcoming PvP God, a Giran financial guru with a billion Adena, a warp-speed leveler, or someone who just wants to meet a lot of other people. I dunno. All I do know is that if I were in his shoes, I'd rather have someone give me their opinions and their reasoning behind it, and tell me point-blank, "This is some stuff you might want to consider about the choice you made." He may decide that the stuff he wants out of the game is completely different from mine, and that my opinion isn't relevant to him. That's fine - that's for him to decide. But if he is a member of the population who wants the same stuff out of the game that I do, then he's better off understanding the reasoning behind people's suggestions.
If I were new to this game and chose a class based on a very limited frame of reference, I'd be grateful if someone offered an accurate assessment of the classes to help expand my point of view.
I know I wish I had someone to do this for me. I made ingame friends slowly and being a total MMO noob, I didn't even discover that there was a forum until 3-4 months after I had started playing the game. The ultimate irony is that, by complete random chance, my main character ended up being my SpellSinger, and I don't even like PvP.
When I went DA as my subclass, a bunch of people tried to dissuade me from going that way. In the end though, they still respected my decision because, hey, I did level an SH to 76, an SE to 62, and a prophet to 56, so I knew what I was getting myself into. After all, it's a subclass. No, you don't get a subclass by being a noob. Nor does not having a subclass and choosing a melee make you a noob by default.
But if you're completely new to the game, you're not going to know as much about it regardless of how much you may have read. He may end up loving or hating his Orc - who knows.
Time will tell, and it's quite true, not everyone is meant to play every kind of character. Nor does every race/class of character appeal to everyone.
But it isn't inappropriate to provide information about the relative merits of each class to help educate him about the game.
Absolutely. However - I don't think that only telling someone to re-roll as a Necro isn't really providing information about the relative merits of each class.
After all, some of the input here may help him find a class that he might enjoy playing even more than an Orc. Taliesyn's comments were especially good. (And if you're going to re-roll, it's better to do it sooner rather than later.)
This is why I generally tell the new to L2 people I meet to roll a little of everything. Cleric, fighter and mage and play around with each of them. It gives a better understanding of the game and how the classes work together. Hehehe - a server of Necros might get kinda boring.
IF he ends up hating his Orc (it is possible) and eventually rolls a Necro, he would say "Why didn't anyone tell me how awesome Necros are?!" At least now someone can say, "Well. Actually, a few people did."
It's entirely possible. Then we would have to begin calling you the Oracle at SDog. Who needs Delphi, we got Da DOG!
:D
Besides, Necros are far faster levelers than any Orc class anyway.
This is true too. But, again, not everyone chooses to play that way. Not everyone wants to be 75 by next week.
Not that those who do are wrong or right, just that they play differently.
So, how about this -
Why don't you tell us what kind of player you are, Femm?
What do you want from your time in L2?
That will better help us to help you.
Well in the first post it was said that orcs look cool and that would be reason enough to try one... which I personally totally agree on. :)
A necro as first toon doesn't level all that much faster. Consider no twink gear, no bsps, no cursed bones, no crystals. How many necros as first and main char do you know who hit 75 without violating the EULA?
Besides that most players are still hoping for the overdue necro and mage nerf in c5. For someone who doesn't like mage playstyle at all and just spent a half a year of unpleasant grind to pwn in pvp... that might be devastating news. You know how much NC exaggerates with the nerfs. Stun... forget it. Daggers... ya. Mages WILL be next, since they can hardly be any more overpowered.
So in that case one would have played a char he doesn't like for half a year to catch up to the end gae content on advise from someone who promised the best fun ever... just to find everything he worked that hard for being nerved to oblivion.
Now tell me how that is actually better than starting off with what you like? L2 is not only C3/4. There are 8 more to come and I put my money on "not too bright times for mages in forseeable future".
Cal
PS: Fishstick from KoD is pretty close to lvl 75, playing a Tyrant.
Absolutely. However - I don't think that only telling someone to re-roll as a Necro isn't really providing information about the relative merits of each class.
Yeah. You got me there. I made the mistake of going in guns-blazing, saying "here's the answer to your question!" instead of mapping out my argument (which came several posts later).
Yup. My Bad.
So Femme, for the sake of completeness, here's the complete breakdown on why Necros are just so incredibly powerful. While you're new and you might not be familiar with some of the stuff, just keep this in mind: Nukers are a ranged damage dealing class.
At the highest levels, Necros get:
Transfer Pain
50% of the incoming damage you take will get transferred to your summon. Transferring 50% of any incoming damage is huge. You'll effectively be able to take as many hits as a tank if you have your summon out. Tanks can take hits but can't deal that much damage. As a Necro, you can take hits AND deal damage. Also, since you're ranged and your attacks are so strong, you'll be able to kill most melee units (of comparable level) before they even get to you.
Attacks
Necros have two standard attacks: one that uses up an item (a Cursed Bone), and one that drains your opponent's HPs and returns some of it to you. Both of these attacks deal a SIGNIFICANT amount of damage.
The Summon Itself
Now, in C4, Summons themselves can use soulshot and spiritshot. Good game. The Necro's summons were deadly in and of themselves in C3. Now that they can use shot, they're even more deadly. And dont' forget - you'll be nuking your target while your summon is attacking too.
Other PvP Skills
Curse Gloom: You cast this on your target and if it lands, his MDef turns to mush. He's dundies.
Anchor: A paralyzing attack with a very high land rate. If it lands, he's completely immobilized for two minutes.
But, as much as it pains me to say this, yes, Cal has a point: compared to other classes, Necros are expensive to level - that's indisputable. As for a possible nerfing, well, Necros are ridiculously overpowered right now. They're so powerful that everyone suspects that NCSoft will probably reduce their potency in the future, but nobody knows for sure if they'll do it or how far they'll go.
S-Dog
P.S. I need to make another ammendment. I do know ONE level 75 Orc. One.
I have an orc I love. SDog didn't tell you one main reason they level slowly.... no one wants to group with you unless they are your friend if they have other choices.
People rarely understand what an orc shaman can bring to a party and in some cases it's honestly not going to be anything someone else can't do who has other things to offer in addtion.
That said however at upper levels Orcs are awesome. I hope someday my Kae will be an Overlord useful for a clan/alliance, but it will be a long slow road and if you are tolerant for that, then go orc, but it is good to know upfront.
I thought that I had written a post that explained in detail the merits of the Necro class. That was the whole reason why I adopted the tone I did - I thought I had already given a full explanation.
I did write a post like that, but I got my forums confused. It was on Warcry, not here. At first I thought my post might have been deleted, but it wasn't, it was in another forum.
I thought I was repeating myself when, from this community's point of view, you were actually hearing my opinions for the first time. So I apologize.
Well in the first post it was said that orcs look cool and that would be reason enough to try one... which I personally totally agree on. :)
The look of your character can be fun in lower levels, but once you're higher up in levels most people are too busy to focus on the action to actually take the time to see the artistic side of the game. This game could be 1s and 0s for me now and I wouldn't care much more than the occasional screenshot I take.
A necro as first toon doesn't level all that much faster. Consider no twink gear, no bsps, no cursed bones, no crystals. How many necros as first and main char do you know who hit 75 without violating the EULA?
How many tyrants do you know that got to 75 without violating the EULA in any way? How many of ANY class do you know? A handfull?
Besides that most players are still hoping for the overdue necro and mage nerf in c5. For someone who doesn't like mage playstyle at all and just spent a half a year of unpleasant grind to pwn in pvp... that might be devastating news. You know how much NC exaggerates with the nerfs. Stun... forget it. Daggers... ya. Mages WILL be next, since they can hardly be any more overpowered.
Actually, you missed the HUGE nerf of archers and mage classes in C3. It's called combat poins. CP were added so that melee characters could survive long enough to reach range-attackers and get a chance to land some hits in short-range. So much for that.
So in that case one would have played a char he doesn't like for half a year to catch up to the end gae content on advise from someone who promised the best fun ever... just to find everything he worked that hard for being nerved to oblivion.
Having a class that's fun to play is awesome. I just wanted to warn the poster (and anyone who has the same dilemma) that there is a huge discripency in the ability of classes. Put a Tyrant against a Necro in the arena who are the same level at the same time and I'll be willing to be 1 billion adena on the necro. Put the Necro and the Tyrant in front of a dark red mob and I'll still put my bet on the necro. Put the Necro and the Tyrant in front of a horde of mobs and the necro will be sitting waiting for a respawn by the time the tyrant kills a single mob and has to sit for hp.
Now tell me how that is actually better than starting off with what you like? L2 is not only C3/4. There are 8 more to come and I put my money on "not too bright times for mages in forseeable future".
I can also put some money that IF they do nerf mages, they'll eventually nerf other classes to a point where everyone will be equal. Between playing 4-5 chronicles of a useless character to finally be equal or to actually start with a great versatile class isn't much of a debate for me.
Cal
PS: Fishstick from KoD is pretty close to lvl 75, playing a Tyrant.
Yes, and I'd gladly 1 vs 1 him with my level 64 OL. I'd rather we do it in an arena because I wouldn't want to go red on him because he died before reaching me.
There are just too many classes that are better at pvp, pve and everything else to justify playing a class that is as nerfed as melee characters currently are.
Unless of course you're a very casual player that has no intention of ever getting involved in pvp, sieges or awesome groups. Playing a melee DD is a bad idea because ONE day you'll probably be in your 50s or 60s and you'll want to join in the fighting (either for the fun of it or because you get forced into defending yourself) and when that happens you're probably going to reroll not very long after or quit the game.
I did play my orc until about lvl 15. It's unbelievable how many people tell me that I'm stinky, ugly, slow, weak, etc. And after playing for a while, I did decide that I hate being slow!
A human mystic sounds fun, but I really need to get over the fact that I don't like the way they look. The site says that Dark Elves have a stronger attack power than humans, but it seems you guys are telling me that humans are stronger. I want to be able to defend myself. I hate getting picked on or watching someone else getting picked on and not being able to do anything about it. I don't want to always depend on being with someone else to survive.
Ugh right now I have to go but I'll finish up later. Thanks for all your posts guys! :D

LOL. I can't believe that most the tension in this thread could have been completely avoided by having someone just say: "Femme. People will make fun of you for playing an Orc. They'll say you'll smell." Orcs do smell, and they're bed-wetters too.
A human mystic sounds fun, but I really need to get over the fact that I don't like the way they look. The site says that Dark Elves have a stronger attack power than humans, but it seems you guys are telling me that humans are stronger.
In terms of pure nuking firepower, a SpellHowler is the strongest nuker in the game. But they have a problem: if someone runs up to them and sneezes on them, they'll get dropped in two hits. SpellHowlers are "Glass Cannons."
Necros hit hard too. They don't hit as hard as SpellHowlers, but Necros have much better survivability. Also, determining the winner of dueling mages isn't completely decided by who hits the absolute hardest - Necros can pull out absolutely insane summons to fight along side them. And these summons aren't cute little pets either - those things hit HARD.
I have made two orcs for alts the first was a fightergoing to go tyrant but I was totally sick of playing him around lv 15 and deleted him. I made a second one which is now an orc shaman I planned to make it an overlord but once again I am repulsed by playing her. Of all my 9 toons my orc is the only one I could not stomach getting to 40 and third clas change. You can see from my list of toons what I have and with the expection of nukers it covers a bit of everything. I have played my roommates SH and found them interesting to play. My suggestion to you is to watch people hunt and pvp see who does things you would like to do. When I started playing L2 I went with a paladin right away because I have always liked Paladins and being fairly new to the MMO tank role I wasn't prepared for what I got myself into. And being really stubborn I have hung in there this long. My only motivation now for playing my paladin is to get to 75 and subclass. I picked what I liked and went horribly wrong don't make the same mistake. Because in a game like this where there is NO balance between classes you sometimes get stuck on the bottom of the food chain. Right now I grind my .01% a kill in hidden spots because in pvp a solo paladin is just dead! I am slow and weak. I can't catch up to nukers through normal run speed and even if I could I still get killed in about 5-10 shots. While it takes me about 30secs to beat them to death. While being a tyrant you do more damage yes but if you are rooted or slept by a mage you are done.
My point is if you want any chance to do anything in pvp don't go tyrant or destroyer. And if you don't want to be involved in pvp, don't join a clan or carry lot and lots of bsoes
Are you so sure they will nerf nukers Cal? yes they are overdue badly but seriously you think ncsoft cares? They haven't done a lot of things to classes that are walked on. When Daggers got nerfed a LOT of people flat out quit the game not rerolled but quit what do you thinkwill happen when nukers are nerfed? Personally I would prefer not to see anyone nerfed jsut certain classes getting boosts where they need them. I tried my paper rock scissors idea which wouldn't have nerfed anyone just balanced things but it was largely unviewed so it looks as if the only ideas coming are take away this andthis and this and all that would happen is more people quitting and ncsoft wants our money more then our happiness
I wouldn't mind if all the "flavor of the month" re-rollers would quit for good. :) Not mind at all. That would probably solve a good part of the bot problem as well (oops, handbrake to avoid total derailing of thread!)
The only thing that NC cares about is that people play their game. They don't want it fair, balanced, funny, easy, hardcore, team or solo-oriented. They want subscriptions. End of story.
Quite a bit of the short list above might eventually increase the subscription number, but it's only second priority. If the people in Asia buy the game as it is, it is perfectly ok as it is.
@femme: Next to swordsingers orc tyrants are the fastest class in the game... they have the highest attack speed too, by far. Don't make the mistake to call an orc slow. :)
If you don't want to play a char because other people say it smells... the row for flavor of the month reroll candidates is over there. *points*
@Sdog: Very mature reply up there... I'm impressed. :) Now please don't get my teasing wrong, k? ;)
INT: m.atk (how much damage you do)
Dark Elves / humans / elves / orcs
MEN: magic points, mp regen, m.def, how much you get distracted - least important stat
Orcs / elves / humans / dark elves
Human: CON 27 - WIT 20 - INT 41 - MEN 39
Elf: CON 25 - WIT 23 - INT 37 - MEN 40
Dark Elf: CON 24 - WIT 19 - INT 44 - MEN 37
Orc: CON 31 - WIT 15 - INT 31 - MEN 42
Now lets look at the specificity of the different classes: what makes each class good and what makes each one weak.
Spellsinger (elf): elves have the fastest casting speed, so they kill fast. They have cancel (removes some buffs from the target), sleeping cloud (area effect sleep) and that's about it for unique skills. They do NOT have body to mind / corpse life drain, so they are horrible in PvE if you don't have a Shillien Elder or Elven Elder following you everywhere.
Spellhowler (dark elf): These hit the hardest, but they hit slow and don'T have many hit points. Their main feature is having body to mind (transfers hp into mp) and corpse life drain (for very low mp cost you steal life from a dead mob), which, when combined together, means you can hunt pretty much without sitting down for mp. With death spike, which is an attack skill that costs more money but less mp, you can be quite a good killing machine in sieges and anywhere where mp consumption is important.
Sorceress (human): Slower in casting speed than a spellsinger, weaker in m.atk than a spellhowler and more hit points than those two. They don't have body to mind / corpse life drain at higher levels, but they get it up 'till 35, so they can at least regen some mp back. They also have sleeping cloud which is nice.
Overlord/Warcryer: Highest constitution gives orcs great hp and cp. Both of these' main attacks in pvp are steal essence which is the best drain of the game (gives you back 80% of the life you steal) but it's a bit slow. WC gets good party buffs, while OL gets slightly worse alliance buffs (works on every alliance member within range, so you can buff a lot of people at once at raids and sieges). WC gets single-target sleep + DoT (damage over time), while OL gets area effect debuffs (root, DoTs, silence, slow attack speed, slow movement speed, reduced accuracy, etc) and single-target and alliance cp cures.
Necromancer:
Necromancers rock. They're a hybrid class between summoner and nuker and they get the best of both worlds. They get death spike (costs more money but less mp), same drain as spellhowlers, body to mind, corpse life drain as nukers do. Their only disadvantage on that part is they don't have a normal nuke so they cost more money to level up as a nuker. But they also get summons. With the addition of pet soulshots/spiritshots, summons probably can do more damage than most melee DDs and only cost 15% of your exp now, so you're hitting like you had a DD grouped with you, but are still getting 85% of the exp. They also get transfer pain, so at higher levels half the damage you do to a necro gets sent to it's summon, which makes it extremely hard to kill. More hit points than a tank, more damage output than a nuker in pvp if you include the summon's drain, these guys are really too strong for now. Necros get a lot of sweet debuffs too, such as sleep, silence, paralyze, poison and gloom (reduces target's m.def)
One thing to note is people wrongfully believe that tattoos can fix problems in stats. They don't. Someone with faster casting speed will still have faster casting speed when both of you put +4 to wit, so his comperative advantage is still there.
On the other hand, other than spellsingers being less efficient in mp (so leveling slower in pve) and necromancers costing more money to level (because of the death spike spell) and orcs having buffs and less nukes, the differences between the different nukers isn't that bad in how good they are, but more in play style.
I suggest you gon in New Player Guide and look at the Races, Classes and Skills section to compare the skills and see which one would best suit you.
For example, if you are like me and fall asleep when you have to sit down to rest for mp, then spellsinger isn't a good choice. If you can't hunt consistantly and have to afk all the time, then it won't matter to you since you'll be afk when you sit down anyways.
With any of these classes, you should have a good chance in pvp against anyone of your level.
Oh, yeah, forgot an other issue that makes wizards better as a whole than other classes: overenchanting.
If you take a +17 sword of delusion (6m sword), it'll have the p.atk of a top a-grade sword +0. If you take a +10 homunkulus sword (same worth as delusion), it'll have the m.atk of a top a-grade staff +0.
The reason for this is p.atk goes up faster than m.atk on the weapons, but when it comes to enchants, they give the same amount to both stats. So in absolute values, they're the same, but in percentage of increase, the m.atk gets a greater advantage from scrolls.
This gives nukers a great advantage over the other classes at higher levels, because if you take a staff of any grade and enchant it, it'll be much stronger than any other weapon of the same level enchanted by the same amount.
A +16 a-grade staff will be much stronger than a +16 a-grade melee sword.
Katastrophe - good stuff man, and I especially wanted to point out the following:
For example, if you are like me and fall asleep when you have to sit down to rest for mp, then spellsinger isn't a good choice. If you can't hunt consistantly and have to afk all the time, then it won't matter to you since you'll be afk when you sit down anyways.
LMAO.
Dude. If Femme is a smoker, then she should go SpS. :) She can regen her MP while she goes to find her lighter/matches. That's what I do when I need to regen my MPs. :)
I did play my orc until about lvl 15. It's unbelievable how many people tell me that I'm stinky, ugly, slow, weak, etc. And after playing for a while, I did decide that I hate being slow!
Yeah probably best u weren't an Orc. Real orc minded players who are told they are "stinky, ugly, slow, weak, etc." would have killed them where they stand. Tyrant has ablility be as fast if not faster than SilverRangers.
Human classes are more specialized in their class. SDog is going on about how one specialty class, Necromancer, is the most powerful class for pvp in C3 and into C4.
I stand with community thou, play what class is fun for u. Daggers seem to be making a come back, never go wrong with a mage, summoners now are accually be dangerious now, tyrants are mobile tanks, DA/SKs are great pvper tanks, or any support class is highly popular. Even EEs are coming into fashion, since new clan war system.
Instead of being persuaded into a speific or FTOM, just say what class looks like something u want to try. I am sure lot people here can inform u what that class is fully capable of.
Necomancers indeed were cool... before everyone rerolled one. :p Now they are like gladiators in c1 or daggers in c2... everyone and his mom has at least one of them. Which is totally uncool... at least in my book. :p
Treasure hunters are being considered "gimp" since the end of C2. In theory they are the mage killers in this game. Speed boosts to reach the pests and very high damage specials that can take a low pdef target down within seconds.
Unfortuntely NC screwed them up in C2... making them so powerful they could kill -every- class with 3 keystrokes, even tanks. This was due to specials landing every time (might mortal special weapon ability which is now removed from the game), soulshots affecting special attacks (new in c2) while pdef didn't reduce the damage taken from special attacks (fixed now).
Of course there was an uproar within the community (even worse than now against the mages) so the company basically took the daggers out of game for C3. Lower damage, hardly ever lands a special, can hardly reach the target before he's taken down by nukes (which is true for all other classes as well tho).
There are rumors that THs and other daggers were boosted again in C4 without listing it in the official changelogs. Numerous dagger players reported significantly higher damage on both regular and special attacks, the land rate is still bad tho (50% or less). We will have to see how those changes affect the live servers.
They are not too ad PvE chars in groups as well as solo, but as main DDs nukers and archers do better. They come with a nice variety of mean skills tho (rogue hehe) like silent move, lure, mob distraction (forgot the name) and fake death, which allow a totally different play style. Also they are quite cheap to level, compared to archers and nukers, which could also be an important factor to a new player. :p
For more detailed info you'd have to speak to a dagger player... if you find one. :) And most likely he will not recommend his class... as I said THs and all daggers really were not worth it in C3... seems there were some changes for the better with C4 but only time will tell, and it's too early yet.
Treasure hunters are probably the best of the melee damage dealers.
Their biggest downside is having to be behind your opponent and in close range to do massive damage. This makes them a bit harder to play in pvp since you have to move a lot around targets to land the same damage a mage would do at a distance.
On the other hand, they can make excellent tanks in groups. They don't have the hate/aggression skill, so it's a little "harder" to get the aggro for them, but if you hit the monster first and use soulshots, the mob should continue hitting you.
Because a TH's damage comes from criticals, if you have focus and death whisper, you will do a lot more criticals and each one will do much more damage than normal. Add vampiric rage and you'll gain back some hit points every hit you make. Add haste to hit faster, haste/p.atk/crit_damage dances from blade dancers and crit_rate song from swordsingers and you will be dealing great damage against mobs while keeping yourself healed.
TH also have fake death, which is usually used maliciously. When you have a bunch of monsters following you, you use it and they think you're dead and leave you alone. If you do silent step before, you can fake death, stand up and leave. If there's any player nearby, they'll get hit by the mobs. (which is the malicious use, you can get other players killed this way and try to get their equip)
They have silent step which makes you "invisible" to monsters, as well as veil which makes monsters "blind" to people in your party. They can also unlock doors and treasure chests, which should be more lucrative in C4 I believe.
Lastly, the reason TH are better than their DE or elf equivalents is they have better fighting statistics, which makes them better at fighting - which is basically the only thing dagger users do.
Their biggest disadvantage versus other dagger classes is they don't have self-buffs, but buffs you will have in a group are better than self-buffs anyways and as a dagger user I doubt you'll be doing much soloing.
They're pretty good to have in pve groups, but in pvp they're just average and in solo they're quite low in the ladder.
I'm afraid I can't give you info on any class you want to play, since I've been an archer (just because I love elves, and rangers, and elven rangers atop any other thing :D ) and a healer. If you need info on that, I can give a list of pros and cons of both classes when it comes to hunting.
Where the biggest difference lies is between being in the ladder and not on the ladder. Someone on the ladder can probably kill 2-3 non-ladder-people in a row of the same level with the same price of equip and in some cases even more.
So if your class isn't in the ladder and you want to be a factor in pvp, it might be a good idea to consider a reroll depending how far or not you are from subclassing. If you're 50ish, consider it, if you're 74, wait one more level and you get a "free" reroll. On the other hand, if you subclass to a better class, it means your hero class won't be too good, so it depends if you want to be a hero soon or be a very strong hero in over a year from now.
If you want to reroll to a class that's on the same ladder (like from SH to necro), most often it's not worth it unless your SH is low. A 75 necro would be stronger than a 75 SH, but a 70 SH would be stronger until the necro reaches 65+, which will take it a very long time.
Rerolling is always an investment in the very far future, so you have to make sure you'll stick it up until your new class will outlevel your old class to be really more efficient. But then again, you can always go to your old class if you get bored of the new one, so it's not a total loss.
As for rerolling
In general, I would say only reroll if the game becomes unfun anymore. Between quitting and rerolling, rerolling is always a better option. Between sticking with a 18+ months old character and rerolling, sticking with the old one is usually worth it.
When Aesir stepped out of ASP, I quit my Overlord to start playing a Necromancer. The reason was simple: without a huge alliance to back me up, playing an OL wasn't really beneficial to anyone. And when it came to pvp, OLs run out of mp way too fast to be incredibly great at anything but buffing a large amount of people quickly - something you need a huge alliance to really be worth it. We also had a lot of people who had rerolled at the same time, so it was much more pleasant to group with my 40s and 50s clannies than to solo al the time with a mid 60s overlord. It helped keep us all together and at the same time I learned how necromancers and nukers are played in their 50s and now I have a better idea of what to expect when I come head-to-head against one in pvp. It's kinda like poker: knowing your hand is nice, but knowing your oponent's hand is even better.
When we had found an alliance that was worth sieging with again, I un-retired Taliesyn and stripped my Necromancer who was now in it's mid 50s. I had no regrets for playing my Necro for a few months, because I wouldn't have played Taliesyn during that time anyways. I needed a break from being an OL. I had a lot of fun playing my necro, grouped with friends and learned more about the FoTM.
Personally, I would do much more damage with a necro than my OL, but on the other hand OL makes the alliance stronger and with the new cp cures and the heart of paagrio spell, it makes us as an alliance harder to kill. Oh, and 1 vs 1 I can still kill pretty much anything except nukers, so being OL is decent enough for me in pvp. Only reason I put archers above orc mages is because we run out of mp fast if we nuke, so we can only kill 2-3 targets before running out of mp.
The answer I reached isn't that important, but I hope the way I answered my own question will give you some ideas on how to help solve your own dilema. I probably wouldn't reroll a SH into a necro, but if I had neither, I'd probably roll a necro instead of a SH.
Keeping in mind that future C's will reshift the merits of different classes, I think that chosing a class for it's short term power is not the best move to make. If you care about power, then you will eventually be dissapointed.
So I still think you should choose a class that you find fun. If you like opening chests, be a TH. If you like the look of a mage, be one. Feed the backstory/fantasy that you have in your mind and the fun will follow.
RumPunch's solution is good if you don't feel like being too competitive. Kinda like poker: if I'm playing for fun with friends and I have a 3 and a 4 preflop, I might play it out just for the fun of it. If there's money involved, I'll probably drop unless I can get a reputation of being a loose caller for rather cheap. If I'm at a tournament with a few thousand bucks in prizes like last night, I'll fold unless I feel extremely confident I can intimidate the other player, but 99%+ of the time I'll drop it.
Same thing applies to Lineage 2. If you play just to have fun, you can have fun as any class. If you want to be strong enough to beat anyone in pvp, then you have to be within a certain range of flavor-of-the-months. I'd love to see a tyrant kill a necro 1 vs 1. Or 1 necro + 1 tyrant kill 2 necros. Or 2 tyrants kill 2 necros. Or 1 tyrant kill 1 orc mage. I'm sorry to say, but if both people know how to play, it's just never gonna happen. Well, it can. Just like a 3 and 4 unsuited can beat a pocket Ace. But the odds are so low that if you want to be a competitive player (both in pvp and in sieges), you need a class that can be.
If the game was better-balanced it'd be an other story, but it isn't. Lineage 2 isn't really made to be fun. It's not made to be fair either. It's made to be competitive and to figure out what would work out to your advantage.
Sure, people can still play it just for fun, but they sadly can't be expected to be part of the competitive league, or at least not contribute to their clan/alliance as much as they could.

Seriously dude... you... need a break.
It's a -game- if you're not haing fun just quit it.
L2 is not like a game of poker with 1000s in the jackpot. Unless for the Farmers and top ebayers maybe, guess you know that better than me.
One's epeen is not going to grow with the PvP score or number of castles his alliance holds. And certainly not with ammount of ingame money or grade of equipment.
Some people just take this game way~~ too serious. *shakes head and wanders off*

PS: Sorry for the harsh words. No personal insult intended. Just had to vent.

No. Katastrophe is right.
Yeah, L2 is a game, but it's a game that's designed to inflict pain on other people - like Paint Ball. You fight the other dude because EXP loss hurts, and when push comes to shove, it's better to have the other guy suffer the loss than to take the loss yourself. Losing small amounts of money in a friendly poker match is trivial; losing hours and hours of progress in leveling time is annoying.
There is an obvious competitive element in L2: that's why PvP exists, why over-enchanted weapons exist, why sieges take place, and people deal with the Grind. Whether or not you decide to take advantage of it is your own decision, but most would argue that it's your loss, not theirs.
In any case, criticizing Katastrophe because he can recognize the competitive element that NCSoft put into L2 is just odd. What would ANY game be without a way to keep score?
My boyfriend can't have fun unless he's being competitive in games. That's just how some people are. The trick is to recognize what kind of player you are and what brings you fun in the game. I think that's what Katasrophe was trying to get at. He wants a competitive edge. The OP needs to know what will make her happy.
I'm competitive to a point, but I drove myself crazy the first time I played L2 trying to keep up with my boyfriend. I won't ever make that mistake again. I love the game and it doesn't matter to me if I can PvP with the best of them. I hate being randomly killed, but I accept it as part of the game. I want to be able to fish or raise a pet or have 12 alts. My boyfriend would be miserable playing like I do, just as I was miserable playing his game.
Know what you like and that will answer what to play. If you want to be competitive, figure out the best class at the moment (just realize that it will change) and if you get joy out of other things in game, then play whatever class appeals to you.
But you know what the most ironic thing about this whole thread is? There are, what, six pages of posts that started because a new player asked for advice. Okay, that part is fine.
But the new player quit her Orc when the toon was level 15, and has never even done a profession quest on any of her toons. That's fine too - everybody was a noob once in this game.
But the thing is, if you added up all the time people spent answering the original poster, it would probably be greater than the amount of time Femme has actually put into the game.
So Femme - I'm out. I wish you the best of luck and hope you find a class you like, but I'm not posting in this thread anymore. (Not that I blame you in any way for what happened. Honestly, you couldn't possibly have foreseen what your innocent question turned into.) If you get to Level 6x and have a question, I'd be more than happy to offer my opinion, but until then, I think the best advice you should follow is "learn to deal with the Grind."
You Mr. Dog are in it for the results. I was thinking how great a thread it was because of the advice it gave out and how it would be good for all new players to read.

Some are in for the end, some for the journey. ;)
Oh so true. ^^
I consider myself a "journey" player... a good deal imho even tho I might not see the end... the end usually lasts only one moment. Then you see a popup... Congratulations. You have beaten L2. The Servers will be shut down momentarily. ;)
I like competitive games, too. If not I'd not have played this particular game for the most part of two years now... but one of the plenty easy candy carebear games. I don't like being a carebear in WoW... everyone can do that. I enjoy being a carebear in L2, becuse that really takes something. :P (Imho at least, call it pathetic if you like. ;)) But I don't play for winning, that's silly in a MMO in general and L2 in particular, just look at the hero-system, only 31 (?) for a whole server. Utopic.
I play for the competition itself. And it has many more aspects than just PvP. You can even compete withourself if you like.
And that your only competition seems to be who causes the mot grief amoungst his fellow players is what's listed next to pathetic in my book.
What I critized early was that masochistic touch of Kata's post. Like the purpose of L2 would not be to bring the player enjoyment but to make him suffer grind. Solely. Which I think is just stupid. I would never do something deliberately in my free time that I consider suffering. Not to mention paying 15 bucks for that.
Hm... ya we got a bit off topic... but I think the thread is a good read nontheless... one of the rare opportunities to post something on the Erica boards on top of that. ^^ You should consider to stay a bit longer for the fun of it, SDog.
Cal
PS: Boogs, I'm pretty much done with the move now... so I have a bit more time to play. ^^ 2-4 hours per day should be possible at least. I tried to PM you a couple of times but you were offline... send me a tell next time you log in. :) Cya ingame!
Besides, Necros are far faster levelers than any Orc class anyway.
They're only better levelers if you have access to a great deal of funds ;)
I don't know about tyrants, but I'm pretty sure Overlords aren't much cheaper than necros to level. The only difference is one is dependant on stuff you waste (bsps / cursed bones) while the other one is dependant on equipment (you need robes with enough p.def to tank, mage weapon with enough m.atk to use spells and enough p.atk to kill mobs in melee because even with 2-3 SEs following you I doubt you could afford to drain nonstop).
If it weren't for my dwarf making so much cash there's no way I could ever afford playing an OL and then again I probably need about 130m more to have the equip I really want (i.e. cheap A melee weapon +3 and heavy DC set and SA crystal for my +4 BoMT). Meanwhile I have to be meleeing in robes with a mage weapon. Kinda funny I still have more p.def and p.atk than most tanks, but yet again, for mp reasons I can't keep that up for very long ;)
I've decided on Spellhowler, but before I change I want to know a little more about Phantom Summoners. I heard there aren't many around. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this class? In the description it says the words servitor a lot, but I'm not really sure what that means.
I play a spellholwer on Erica and love it. We are the party wizard. Not the kings of PvP like the spell singer but with our mana regen and life stealing capabilites when can battle non-stop for a very long time. Also the fact that we are generally more powerful in our casting (high INT), even if a bit slower, puts us at the top of the list when it comes to damage dealing in a party or raid. The Phantom summoner can solo like no one else. With the use of your servitors (summoned creatures that fight by your side) you can take on monsters many other classes would find difficult or impossible alone. Also with the additon of party cubics (orbs that assist the summoner in some way or other) they have some benefits to a party. One of the down sides is the expence of summoning as it requires Crystals of Grade D or C. I'm sure I've missed something as I do not play a phantom summoner but that is the basic overveiw.
Servitors are monsters you summon that follow you and help you and/or your party to kill stuff. The elves and humans have a summon each with a skill that can recharge your mp. This will make you able to hunt pink or higher creatures without having to take breaks.
Phantom summoners do not have such a summon, but on the other hand one of their summons has an inate life-drain ability when they hit. That means that it cures itself while hitting mobs so you don't have to heal it as much.
Summoners have a few buffs that only work on their summons and they have servitor heal (gives hp to their summons) and a few cute spells like something to remove paralysis on a summon.
The main thing of a summoner is he doesn't do much more than summon a servitor (which soon enough has more p.atk than most melee dd classes, one more reason why I don't recommend them), summon cubics and mass cubics (they do automatic debuffs/attacks on the target when you hit them) (warlocks have a paralysis cubic, for example, phantom summoners have one that reduces one or more of p.atk/attack speed/p.def/etc randomly).
So in general, your summon is very strong, but you yourself are very weak. When it comes to pvp, it becomes even more bizarre. The great advantage they have is they usually send in their servitors to fight for them. That means you can stay behind the tanks in safety and send in your servitor. If it dies you can summon a new one (costs a fewcrystals, c or d depending which summon), so you lose a little bit of cash instead of losing 1% or 4% experience. On the other hand, there used to be a bug where a summon couldn't hit people if they were running away (even if the summon was faster). I don't know if it's fixed now, but if they did, that would put them from being bad in pvp to being not too good. Not much of an improvement.
Necromancers also have a summon, but they don't have any servitor buffs/heals after level 40 and they don't level up as fast (each servitor only levels every two times you get skills, so one servitor levels at 40-48-56, the other at 44-52). Being a hybrid class they also don't get cubics but they get nukes/debuffs.
As for the elves, I didn't mention their summons much because they resemble the warlocks alot.
All summoners are fun to play and it's nice being able to hunt in solo and still kill strong things, but when it comes to pvp, the fun pretty much stops there.
I've decided on Spellhowler, but before I change I want to know a little more about Phantom Summoners. I heard there aren't many around. What are the advantages/disadvantages of this class? In the description it says the words servitor a lot, but I'm not really sure what that means.
Others made good descriptions of summoner class, and lot more to it. I'm too lazy write a book about it thou, so I highly suggest if u have any inquires about the class to visit...
Duuuuuuuuuuude. Nice post. I was actually thinking about the same stuff.
I haven't completely decided what my next subclass would be if and when I get my DA to 75. Not so long ago, I was absolutely certain that I would go Necro. It wasn't even so much for their uber PvP skills - I really just wanted a class that could level verrrrrry quickly and have access to Transfer Pain. (Two things that DAs can't do.)
Anyway, now I'm not so sure about going Necro, and I was investigating summoners. Since I'm a Dark Elf, I can't go Elemental Summoner, but I can go Necro, Phantom Summoner, and Warlock.
Anyone have any opinions on which Summoner can level the fastest "soloing," if he has constant access to an SE and prophet? (Yeah, that's not really "soloing," but you get the idea.) That's really the only thing I'm interested in with my summoner class: being able to level it up verrrrrrry quickly. If I'm looking for PvP I'll switch to my Storm Screamer, if I get ganked on my subclass, well, whatever - everyone gets ganked.
OOOKAY man you guys have helped out so much, I really appreciate it. I'm going to stick with my spellhowler to be and later on when I can afford it, I'm going to make a treasure hunter! XD

O.o!
This is getting scary. Summoner class starting to spread like wildfire ><
To ur question, think should speak with Kaysaa since she subclassed Warlock and going for her Noblesse.
If you have the budget I believe you do, necro is the class that will probably level about the fastest. I say about because there are a fairly large quantity of mobs that have resist darkness ability and that sucks a lot.
The only problem though is if you want to play as a summoner, that's definitively not the class for you. The exp loss you get from having a summon out compared to the damage they do versus your nukes will make them useless for pve most of your carreer. You have a nuker summon that does nice damage, wastes tons of mp and takes most of your exp away. And you have two melee summons that will kill one mob for every 5 mobs you kill with your nukes and steal more exp than the trouble they're worth.
So for leveling fast, mages have usually been the best (especially since blazing swamp is SP territory and that's the major solo spot for high level mages).
I personally have a warlock I play from time to time and while I can kill red mobs nonstop in true solo, I found it's not efficient time-wise since I waste too much time healing instead of doing damage. Summons hit well, but their p.def sucks, so while you have almost unlimited mana with the kitty's mp regen skill, you're still better off killing whites and yellows.
The other major problem is summons are considered blunts. This comes with the ubber 2 or 4 accuracy boost and the crappy crit rate. So while with ss they do much better damage (and their damage was still very decent before), their lack of crit rate makes buffs (DW/focus) less usefull.
You'll level faster than a regular melee dd, but you're still a bad-buffer / strong melee dd combo (you / summon).
So if you're looking at speed of soloing, go with necro. (or any wiz class)(since you have a SE mp regen doesn't matter that much, I don't usually use mine on my necro when I bring my SE)
Warlocks' new kitties have buffs that work like dances. Haven't had the chance of trying them out yet, but I guess they'll be more of a bad_buffer/bd combo compared to the phantom summoner who will be a bad_buffer/melee_dd combo.
Oh, and don't under-estimate bsps heals coming from a warlock. Doesn't heal much at a time, but since you have semi-unlimited mana, you can oftentimes replace a bishop. At level 50, I can almost do perpetual heals and in the 70s I'm pretty sure you can do perpetual battle heals.
Oh, and para cubic is fun, but doesn't trigger off often enough to be "relyable".
Friggin Awesome. I had already strongly suspected that Necros would be able to level far faster than any pure summoner class. After all, from a PvE point of view, Necros are very similar to Spellhowlers, and Spellhowlers can level insanely quickly. But your other comments on the pure summoners were very good.
Femm... if you want to make an orc.. i can probably help you a bit. Ive played 3 orc classes, all 3 at least to lvl 40... Destroyer, Monk, and Warcryer... neither of them exist anymore... but i do have some experience with them... if you ever want me to help you lvl one... just send me a pm in-game to no0bness :D or just send in-game email. I can jump on my cheezy human wiz and lvl with ya, show you some good spots to lvl fast ;)
