Apart from the whole issue with the lack of one versus one balance in this game*, I think the one thing that is most bothersome in the olympiad is the 'who wins' ranking, which clearly advantages classes that are already powerful (offensive ones) and nullifies the defensive class's chief point (survivability).
I imagine that a rating system which takes into account a balance of damage avoided, damage healed (through leeches, heals, self buffs and anything I might have forgotten), damage dealt and HP percentage retained, giving bonus points for avoided emergency skills where they were available (UD, UE, Frenzy etc.) and maybe some other small things - in short, a system that actually attempts to evaluate the fight might be very nice.
* Now people might argue class specific tournaments, but especially comparitively weak classes with few high level toons in them will be forced to play in the open competition - and I doubt there will be no archer or mage to prey on them in hopes of easy points.
Fight against other healers? Some melee classes will be very vulnerable to root and then you could just pump em full of arrows. Not every melee will be running in NM so you can actually control them, do dmg and avoid them doing dmg. Run for 3mins and win O.o
No, but you have the ability to choose to only fight your own class, or you can go for open competition to gather more points. Granted, in open competition healers are less likely to win, since they're not really the 1vs1 toons
Perhaps making it so that, if neither side kills the other, the current % dmg taken(ie the amount of hp that has not been healed) would determine the winner. This way healers could compete against other classes somewhat. They do dmg to the opponent and heal themselves full. Thus, in the end healer might have suffered more dmg, but is actually at full HP(or has more % hp left than his adversary) and would win, would this be more fair?

If you make the HP at the end of the battle count, healers can just pop a few heals over poor HP at the end of battle and win - what then of tanks?
Any simple system will have obvious shortcomings. It's up to the designers to develop a system that's so complex that not everyone can figure out how to exploit it.

We could just add different criteria for healers/buffers.
For instance we could have a "sitting" competition for Prophets and the operator who can drink the most coffee and smoke the most cigarettes during a 20 min period would win.
Seriously, choosing a healing buffing class has its own rewards among which are quick leveling and low expenses. But I doubt well see the day a hero competition is perverted enough that a prophet has the slightest chance of winning it against offensive classes who have spent a combined 150 levels and countless adena and sp in order to become fighters.
When healers made the choice not to be offensive classes I think the realize the consequences.

Seriously... its a competition not a death match and shouldn't be judged purely on damage dealt. Of course, healers still have an advantage here where they can use their one 14 blast and then sleep/root and control their target until the fight is over.
I'm sorry, but these people are competing to be the hero prophet, not the hero Whack-A-Thing. The competition should be designed according to that - especially the open competition needs criteria appropriate to its natures, lest the situation develop so that no heroes from the rare classes come up.

Every noble is most likely going to have a hellknife or sprite staff with mental agis SA. I'd also expect of ppl that went twice to 75 to have at least a BoP as secondary weapon, so unless you manage to kill the melee i would think he can deal more damage.
