Why do you guys play this game?
To me, it's my escape from reality. I deal with millions of other people's money daily... and if you dont think they are VERY sensitive about their finances you're wrong. I get chewed out, embarassed, and frustrated as part of my daily regimine... I do it though because I make a decent salary...
Anyways, when I sign on I like to suspend reality and be somewhere else. I want to be that hero out of Lord of the Rings... I want to be that savior of the world with a heart of gold... I want to imagine myself away from the stress of life and live a book that i've read... or written.
This game makes it so easy to submerse yourself in a whole new perspective. All you have to do is watch and listen. Close your eyes some time and just breath in the ambiance of the chirping and harmonic resonance. Play next to some candle light with the soft digital hum of some period themed music.
It's always "how are you doing?"; "What did you do today?"; "what did you eat for dinner?"... and when i answer them in context I get a "lol", then silence.
What from the original retail box enticed you to play? Why did you pick up the game? Was it to chat and flame people? Did you want to submerse yourself in board wars? I grabbed it for the graphics and the opportunity to live in this world... Just like my favorite sony addage:
"Live in your world, play in ours."
Alright.. I'm feeling a bit better having said that. Go ahead... post your flames, bring reality into fantasy, and ignor the absolute stunning beauty of standing in the middle of Heine on a moon lit night.
*disclaimer*
No i'm not quitting. No I'm not ever leaving my clan, I owe them a lot for their help. However, I am looking for a few good men/women with an imagination to add to my friend list. I want to leave my troubles behind and use the few precious hours of my life I have to fully escape to Aden. I want to live the neverending story... Now where the hell is Falcor?
I've always found that immersing myself in the game and my character, just brings a whole new level of enjoyment to the game. Doing so used to allow me to play for hours on end, all night without even noticing. I can't manage that when just grinding.
It's unfortunate that I've drifted away from really immersing myself in my character, I guess over time with no one responding in a like manner I just gave up.
Recently though I've really missed it, hence the reason I started a character on Lionna (they are the unofficial RP server :)), just to see if I could recapture that feeling. For one evning so far, I've managed it and I had more fun then, then I have in a long time in game. A shame it's not a permanent solution, since there's no way I'm giving up my character on Hindemith.
Anyway, enough rambling. Feel free to give me a PM in game, I promise I won't ask you how your day in the office was, but I might ask how you've fared ridding Aden of evil today :).
I play this game on many lvls. If I wanted to be the guy in LOTR, I would buy the LOTR game. If I wanted to be a sithlord, I would buy star wars.
"live in your world, play in ours" sounds like you should be playing a playstation game.
If you don't like dealing with people a multi player online game is not for you.

I kind of think he is desiring "more roleplay"
Issue is that most people don't really do that. Or .. .if they do they dont' do it well.
It's just as jarring to hear about American Idol as it is to hear "for sooth... pray, tell me whither you travel good sir for thou art a sight of vengeance for hatred pours from the light of your eyes and your sword seems hungry for life.
hmm.... that's not bad... maybe I should be a roleplayer... though perhaps I can roleplay American Idol
"Oh my god.. .Simon... I hate you... you can't handle me.. that is it... you can't handle me and I know that I have a great voice but I am just too real for you. You'll see.
nay... those are the words of fools and madmen. :)

you were that guy???
as to the OP, I like setting goals for myself and achieving them. It seems the game with the harder goals keeps me. A game like World of Warcraft doesn't suit me because it's easy to get those goals, and the goals that are truly hard, are too repetitive. Lineage 2 is a far harder game. Currently my first goal is to get my subclass to lvl 75 as soon as possible then get my PW the last level to 76 so I can compete in Olympiad. A mini goal of mine right now is to hunt for a SoV recipe so I can make it for a low cost of 4million adena. There are countless other goals of mine such as get a Nightmare Helmet which I've been one step away from since September. I actually have alot of goals in this game so I'm far from ready to leave. And for me the roleplaying aspect just ain't for me.
I see ded people... I thought we lost you pushing northward through the gates to Goddard??
As per Larielle:

Yes, there is a GoldenDog on Lionna :D. I feel the same way though... It's the sux to give up an elf i've spent over a year on and move servers... So i'm trying to make them come to me... Who knows... If i get enough I would like to remake silver arrow with your permission and add them to my current ally.
It's unfortunate that I've drifted away from really immersing myself in my character, I guess over time with no one responding in a like manner I just gave up.
To be honest, the main type of people who play Lineage II don't play for Roleplay, but for PvP (whether it be sieges, clan wars, or grieifing). When I first started I did roleplay some, but kind of stopped bothering when I saw people named coolboylove9928374 and getting PK'd by people with absurd C1 archer reroll names.
Now I just play the game, don't roleplay, try not to PvP, just play. No point, just play.

I think there is some truth to that.
The problem is that, for people who want to roleplay, they need to find others of like mind. Now, I believe Lionna is the "unofficial" roleplay server. I don't know how it got this name but it did.
what NC could have done was indicate one particular server as the "unnofficial" roleplay server at release. This way like minded players would be concentrated to one server.
I say "unofficial" because you can't really monitor roleplay. Look at other games that have "official" roleplay servers. You will still find peopl yelling out all sorts of nonsense. Part of it could be that the player base is "younger" but part of it is that many people don't realy know whta RP means when they go to the server.
I would say that if you are serious about roleplay within this game, you can either make due with what you have on whatever server you are on or seriously consider Lionna the roleplay server and go there.
Sure... it means leaving your lvl "whatever" character behind. But to a real roleplayer, part of the "play" is just that "Roleplay".
Levels don't really mean that much to many roleplayers as it is the stories they create that is the meat to this game.
Wrong, everyone cares about their level, even roleplayers, whether they admit it or not :P
Ok.. but if that is the case then they are still getting a limited gameplay experience.
Of course anyone can roleplay anywhere. But if your roleplay community is small in the first place and spread out over however many servers, you are going to be dissapointed.
If I was a roleplayer and I was on a server that had little roleplay, I would just find out where the majority of the community was so I could have a complete game experience. No matter my lvl.
It' s all about priorities. Otherwise... lvl 15/lvl 52/lvl 78 it won't matter... one will be unhappy and leave anyway.

Quoted for truth
My response is a combination of
Vent's/Narib's and Luke
Lineage 2 was my first MMORPG 2 years ago, I have always been a huge fan of RPGs since I was born holding a NES controller and brand new copy of Dragon Quest instead of a baby bottle, the idea of being in a world I will never see with my own two eyes is what pulls me RPGs but even RPGs become static and stale.
Before L2 I played Starcraft/WC3 competitivatly (went to alot of tournaments and fought for high rankings) which built me into a very competitive gamer, always striving for the top, to hit my limit and then some.
Lineage 2 combined both worlds and gave it a ever changing enviroment. It gave me the element of RPG , a world i could never really see with my own two eyes. I
Instead of static npcs and enemies who always had the same hp, or could be beaten with the same strategy there were real players, who learned, who thinked and figured out ways to adapt and change to the elements of chaning.
The game also offered PVP which would satisify my competitive gaming side, to get the best gear, grind the most hours so that i could prove to the next guy that my hard work payed off by bringing his HP to 0 before he could mine.
The sieges added a nostalic midevil feeling to the game which also enhanced the role play feature along side the freedom to choose your role in this game on the server.
There are days when i log on and say "why am I still playing this game?"
but then i look at my Toon all decked out in his gear, and his cute kitty ears, and listen to players say how **** i look and then i smile, kick back and remember its all for fun :).
Role play has its limit, when you create stories in your head about a video game you could just play that story in, you're just weird.
I mean NC gives us a world, a bunch of classes and races. just choose one and interact in the world, just cause you role play in a way doesnt mean other dont in their own way. In the end everyone is roleplaying in this game.
Just some people think role play is all about talking like a medieval guy to each other. if all you want is to talk just go play table doungeon & dragon or go in a RPG chatroom or something.
Heaven forbid I look for roleplay in a game that has ROLEPLAY in the description..
MMORPG
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game
It's on MMORPG.com because it's an MMOPRG. Had it not been an MMORPG, it would not be listed as an MMORPG with all the other MMORPG's...
It seems that Sovrath is the only one that understands the symbolism in the LOTR comment. Roleplay is... ah hell... nvm. It's just a waste of words. Call it wierd if you want, but either way, like you, i'm going to play the game however I want to...
I'm just trying to wake up that feeling of joy and wonder we all had when we first heard this awe inspiring opener music and logged into the the mystical world for the first time.
Of course, as with everything in life, people play this game for different reasons. None of those reasons are superior to others, and all that matters is that the players are enjoying themselves.
I play this game on many lvls. If I wanted to be the guy in LOTR, I would buy the LOTR game. If I wanted to be a sithlord, I would buy star wars.

What if you wanted to be a naive Elven woman exploring the world for the first time, or an old human cleric who searches the world for those in need and helps them? Which games would you buy then?
The problem with all single player games (even the best), is that they railroad you to play as they want you to play. You can't do anything you want, or be whomever you want, in a game like this you can (within reason).
As for playing D&D or somesuch game instead, other than the hassle of actually finding a regular group (not always easy), the same thing happens there. Some people play those games to actually level characters and fight monsters and some play to experience the world the GM has created. To be honest, the best roleplaying I've ever had has been in this game, there are some awesome writers with a great imagination out there, and it's no end of fun interacting with the characters they have created.
Role play has its limit, when you create stories in your head about a video game you could just play that story in, you're just weird.
Rather than weird, I'd prefer childish :). To be honest that's all it is, we're just playing "let's pretend" with each other when we roleplay. I always find it strange when people deride roleplaying, all it is is using your imagination to have fun.
A final note about levels, honestly I'd hate to lose the character I have at the moment, however I've never been in a rush to actually gain more levels.
Very well said Larielle... Except for the part where you called me childish XD.
Funny but seriously...
Maybe Romantic ideals are childish, but I know that life really is just a perspective. At the end of the day, what's the difference between what did happen and how you review it in your head? Ever hear the study about the basketball players?
Scientists took two groups of basketball players... One group shot hoops all day long while the other team ran through it in their heads. They just "pictured" themselves shooting hoops and making baskets...
A couple weeks later they compared the two teams to previously set benchmarks and were shocked to find out that the team that regularly mentally practiced was able to out score the team that just went through the motions.
What happens in your head is reality. You live life through your emotions, choices, and pre-set responses. Just like those basketball players, if I see myself doing these things, then it's the same as if I really did them... If not potentially better.
Reality is merely an illusion. Pain can be controlled in the brain along with everything else... why? Because it doesn't really exist, you're just told it does. It's all mental. Having an imagination is childish... why? Because children havn't been told that it's not possible yet. And they are doing what's natural... Breaking the boundries to their adult set cage and trying to get the most out of life.

is not bad but could use some practice.. and I understand what you feel I joined the game for this reason I like roleplaying but I do it in my clan since Im just semi-shy mystic with a heart of gold... As thy moon shines the angels of fire being together watch thy moon as a symbol of good fortune..well that kind of stuff this game has its drama its good, bad and ugly.. it only needs the cooperation of players to make it into a RP world...I sure know St Thomas may cooperate thought... :P
A bit off topic... Hey Sovrath... How'd you loose a star?!
3 really is best.
meh.. he's got 4 again... this is old news now :D
Well that's good... I feel order now being restored in the universe.
And I think the word that Larielle might have meant was "childlike".
Interesting point of note: Howard Gardner is a well known individual whose field of study is intelligence.
He has been doing a lot of study with the idea of genius and multiple intelligences. The idea is that there isn't just one all consuming number that interprets intelligence but that an individual will have a different score in a variety of areas such as physical, emotional, etc.
One of the things that he has found for genius is that you can take 10 people, all with "genius lvl" IQ but not really genius as we think of Einstein, Stravinsky etc...
However (and the point of all this writing) the individuals who mastered the materials that their particular field of excellence required AND who had a childlike wonder and approach to manipulating those materials were actually considered to be "genius".
The idea is that through the very well used "out of the box thinking" they were able to make radical breakthroughs in their fields of study, far beyond other individuals in their fields.
