I'm not sure if I'm getting it, but maybe I just need a better explanation on how the attack power, skill level, and damage work in this game. I usually hunt with a +4 homunkulus sword on a level 50 necro alt. I hit the Enchanted Valley with an old college chum and decided to kill a couple'o'mobs. I found that I can two shot or three shot most of the mobs there (granted this is with demon set, empower, and plus being tattoo'd up the ying yang with extra INT). My friend let me use his +9 homunkulus to see how much more damage I could do out there.
Surprise...
I was still 2 shotting the same mobs I was 2 shotting before and it was the same for the 3 shot mobs. I didn't notice a reasonable difference at all. I'm assuming that it has to be the power level of my spell. It's the only constant that I can see as limiting my punching power. It's a given that my Matk was raised by almost 200 points, but the damage increase was extremely negligible. Has anyone else noticed this, or was I just doing something wrong? Is there a limit to the amount of damage a particular spell can do regardless of how much Matk you have?

Da Smookster...
no limit, no.
but you probably didnt need to use BSPS. once. you could have likely saved them for particularly tough mobs.
a +4 homu has matk of 122, and a +9 homu has an matk of 168 (if I'm doing my math right.) So you have 27% more matk so 13.5% more dmg. If you are 3 shoting you would need to do 16.33% more dmg to get rid of the third shot.
The only nice thing about that little bit more dmg is with CDL imo... it is the dif between 1 shotting at 260hp and 310 hp... as for 3 shot to 2 shot. That is hard to get.
"a +4 homu has matk of 122, and a +9 homu has an matk of 168 "
whoa could you explain to me how that works? i was under the impression that +9 would only have 5 more points? I just came back from a long break from c1 to almost 3 months ago so they changed how pluses work?
Yes, they changed it starting on +4 tyou get more per each enchant (3-4 points per or something like that, and bows have more +atack then other wearpons)
Square roots...I mention them a lot, but obviously it doesn't get taken seriously. Power will increase DPS linearly. Casting speed will increase DPS linearly. MAtk has a much smaller effect from stat increases.
A +9 Homunkulus's Sword is only 12% more damaging than a +4. It's no surprise it took the same number of hits. Also, masteries will only make that difference even smaller...so it just gets worse when you're calculating final Magic Attack...
Edit: Added a line, and...
Esham, each level of weapon enchantment on a C-grade weapon gives +3MAtk. Each overenchant (+4 and more) is double that. Thus, a +3 Homu has +9MAtk, a +4 has +16MAtk, and a +9 has +45MAtk.
yep and on C3 PTS me (SE) and three SH's broke away from the pack after completing our lvl 40 job quests. When I got empower3 at level 52 we went straight to FG to 4-5 shot mobs and guess what... we all had Mage Staffs. Weapon doesn't matter too much for mages, however one + can mean the difference between 2shotting and 3shotting... or it could mean nothing at all.
the simple answer is that any enchant over 4 adds 6 to matk and patk per enchant. Hidude was wrong...a +8 hom has 140matk so a +9 would only be 146matk.
