Evening Hindemith,
Been awhile since I have posted. I have been back in lineageII for about a month now - after a 6 month hiatus (and a shorter one earlier). It's nice to be back, lots of changes in faces, names and politics.
The reason for my post is to let Hindemith know that I am disbanding DarkLegion. It's not to elicit "ooo's & ahhhs's". Many of you might not even know of the clan. You do, however, know of it's previous members. This post is an attempt to pay homage to them and our history - which is Hinde's history.
DarkLegion was formed in Open Beta. Leath, a Dark Elf, along with Nacrom (retired), DarkDragyn (retired) and Oranj (hope she retires :) jk O) were the original members of DarkLegion. It's one of the few OB clans under original 'ownership' and during late C1, C2 and C3 we helped shape the server (C1 was Bizz, BlizzX, Divine, many, many others).
I am glad to see many of our past members are still in game - to see an Orc that used to be a flurry of fists now run around in robes and staff and kill mobs with a whisper and a wave of a hand is testament to the commitment and personal investment these players have put into L2 - the incredible growth and change in the game over 3 years is staggering considering the content and gameplay in OB - hats off to you NCSoft - despite the bugs, growing pains and your daily challenges - this is a game of incredible depth and complexity... enough for you, back to my clan mates... (I still want my Clan Hall and Castle back - your "undocumented features" stole them, you know they did - our conversations are documented - even my forced 24 hr vactation due to ill advised, regretable language in a GM window... now give them back, I am sorry - you mother is really quite cute).
DarkLegion came to strength late (due to my laziness as a clan leader in gaining and not spending my SP - my forays into Enchanted Valley at lvl 20 and other ill advised manuvers). "Late" is realtive to C4 however. Epic war's between Divine, Blizz, BlizzX and others were being waged before DarkLegion earned the right to upload the Pentagram (our clan logo). Farmer was a well used term on the forums - posts fortelling the death of the game due to farmers was a common theme on these boards. Farmers camped Cruma rooms and 'recreational' players tried to fight them. Cruma was the PvP battle ground of choice and epic 200+ player pvp events surged across the inner gangways of that once ominous and well-frequented tower. CT was the spot of my first PVP battle. Memorable was a one shot Crit on Kliptik - who was wearing robes at the time for some unknown reason. Next pvp session, moments later, he jumped in and got the kill shot on me - blinking white and went red in the process - more on Kliptik later). Those were the days..d formative... We knew only what we figured out ourselves (NCSoft is not big on documentation that matters)... Countless hours invested, then the disemination of that information for the benifit of anyone in earshot... how to do EVERYTHING in this very new game. Forum wars in parallel with the epic pvp battles very early in Hinde's history. I remember an 'infamous post by a clan / alliance leaders girlfriend on the forums telling Hindemith of a car wreck and untimely death of a Lineage II player / leader. We were all either shocked and full of stories of his achievments (we all 'knew' him or were rival clans and alliances calling BULLS***.
Early on Hinde had the heart of a fighter, scandals enought to fill a daily gossip rag... twice daily, we had the scammers, we had infighting, we had fun... and this was OB / C1! Hinde was the new server on the block, and we had the chip on our collective shoulder to prove it. The other servers had time (thus lvl's) under the block.. but Hinde was going to prove its mettle.
DarkLegion and DarkIegion (CrazyWolf) and DarkLegion2 (ElpyQueen - owned by DarkDragyn) cut its teeth at the invitation of Divine (Mawar) to help siege Oren Castle. Other attempts had been made on NPC castles (yes you noob's, no one owned them yet). None had yet succeded either due to insufficient resources, pvp on the siege grounds or simply not enough time and lack of intel. NPC Castles were full of lvl 50 NPC Gaurds. Very few on Hinde were at that level, so it meant 100 lvl 40's sieging an unknown quantity (once you get the door down - what direction do you head next?). Divine was ultimately successul and took the first castle on Hindemith. We were happy to contribute and took pride in that monster accomplishment. Was it Drek that had busted his and his clannies head on Dion twice in failure before Divine was succesful? No one knew... you had to get inside to find out.
Like most achievements on Hindemith, once one Castle was taken, the others fell in succession. DarkLegion / DarkIegion (and Liquido2's clan - name - sorry, I am getting forgetful) registered for and sieged Gludio (other clans / psuedo-alliances did too (we were not lvl 5 yet - again due to my laziness and my desire to buy the next skill level of Double Shot).
After a small disagreement on who would commune first (agreement broken - other clan's killed - inner throne room barred to unfriendly PC's) - DarkLegion and DarkIegion and Liquido2's clan gathered in the inner thone room to commune. I communed first, took all the NPC aggro in the room and got knocked off the commune spell (it's likely I died at this time - I was level 46 I believe - but in my mind - I took the hits like the HOT DE chick I am and shrugged them off and simply had to try communing again). After a hasty TS discussion, we decided that all three registerd clan leaders would try in succession, a couple of seconds a part. I communed first, took aggro and got knocked off. CrazyWolf started to commune and I heard nothing and assumed he got knocked off. Liquido2 communed, drew aggro and got knocked off (I think he died :).
Our brothers and sisters in arms were frantically trying to keep the NPC spawn dead in the inner throne room. A tall task for lvl 40 players fighting NPC archers, mages and healers with a sole task - Kill the communer. I tried communing again as did Liquido - Knocked off, same for him - tried again... and again.... All this time, our mighty Shamman and clan mate and Clan Leader CrazyWolf had managed to keep his commune. During the last few moments he communicated this to us... Liquido's and I sole task became COMMUNE AND HOLD AGGRO ... we heard the crunching sounds of the doors going back up.... the rest of us were teleported to the siege grounds outside the castle and King CrazyWolf -DarkIegion clan was King of Gludio. These were guidy times. Overtime, siege tactics became old hat, but those initial weeks of trial and error by clans of lvl 40 against the NPC held castles were a harbinger of times to come - Clan vs Clan sieges. We sieged, died and learned the tactics. Only by doing did we learn.
Prior to us taking Gludio (waning days of C2), a unknown, underpowerd, weakly populated Alliance called Reborn (mainly the members were part of the www.IhaveAnIQof20.com (http://www.IhaveAnIQof20.com) club) were gaining strengh and momentum on Hindemith (ok... the above sentence is completely incorrect except for their membership at that site :)... OK, Reborn had some skillz.
While zerg had been used before to reference earlier alliances, Reborn was the ZERG. They had the numbers, the leadership and the above mentioned skillz to intimidate the entire server. On the day of our victory at Gludio, Domisun (fellow canuk, but eternal noob:) requested a meeting at our Castle. We were politely invited to back Reborn (not join them or alliance - simply side with them) or they would come back in two weeks and take our newly won castle. Politely, I told Dom and his alliance to take a long walk off a very short pier. I told him that once he performed his first career change, come back, I would give him some D equipment and we would chat. He could assume the throne of Gludio over Crazy's dead body (hey, if yer da King of da world, you assume da consequences).
Dom and Reborn were not unknown to us... I had suffered a few deaths from Reborn KOS order and our ranks were loud with discussion to fight or not (understand that Reborn outgunned us pretty bad at this time). Still we fought many pvp battles against them... We stood and and PVP'd with them, we died - they died (we died more) but it was a full month of PvP (I think I remained the same level this entire period - and at lvl 46 that either speaks to my skill in PvP, my aformentioned laziness - or having a huge target on my head). I vaguely remember the time... mostly hanging out in the safety of a Town Gate. I learned a quick lesson. If Reborn was there in numbers... when I flagged, I died - quickly. We had some memorable pvp.
One pvp event outside Giran had a reborn member Red, naked and being washed (Kylnia (sp) maybe) - when you pvp'd Reborn, you had to deal with her (PR) and Targic (SR) hovering on the perimiter. She was rez'd... very light pink... I shot and killed her (her being naked - me buffed and armed - easy task - added to the fact that I did not like her - she shot me alot). To my horror, I turned Red (it was an old bug where red players, when rez'd appeared red.. even though they were not). Now, fully armed, RED and in the middle of a pvp event is not great - I bee-lined it for the Giran gates hoping (in vain) and praying (pointless - the gods in L2 are false prophets) to make it past 50 enemy players and the guards... bright red. I did not ... I died at the entrance to Giran and dropped a full composite set - boots, helmet, gloves and armour. Popped like a pinata. I went down at the feet of 20 or more players watching the pvp outside. Who picked up my gear would have been anyones guess. I get pm'd by Kliptik (long before he joined the clan) and he traded the entire set back to me - he mentioned that he felt bad for the 'cheap shot' pk in Cruma earlier (months?). Classy move. While I did not always see eye to eye with Kliptik - he was one of the best PvP'ers in the game. Fearless and skilled. This made me think during one pvp event with Reborn... B1ade when red on one of DarkLegion... I chased him down (Rudewaker - remember him?) had cut him off and rooted him (Rudewakers one and only 'good' job). I killed him and he dropped his B dagger, armour (two piece - only dropped his bottoms) and 6K in BSS. It was the first time I has seen B grade gear (on me, not in a store). We ransomed it back to Reborn for 5 million. We split it amongst the DL players pvp'ing - I remember much later when Dom dropped or was scammed out of his Staff - one of the first on the server. Reborn members rallied to replace it - Kind of made me feel sad for Hinde - if you pvp'd, went red, Poped and dropped, there was a chance to get it back at a price (lower than retail) - in my mind - thats ok... a penalty of sorts. Many members lost weaps and armour that way in DL - we tried to get it back as we gave it back... there may be a price but your were gauranteed to get it back... and below replacement cost. I degess...
Reborn had promised to take our Castle. In four weeks, they registered to accomplish that task. Hinde was in a period or reorging... clans / alliances were reforming - We were rallying the troops in a attempt to stand up to Reborn and were dying every night. Reborn owned 3 castles and Gludio would be 4.
It was the first siege of C3. We now had breakable walls and dorfs had Hogs to break them down (though few WS were of sufficent level to summon them.) We were on our own against the strongest alliance on the server and in for the fight of our L2 career. We implemented a 'soft' defence.. give but don't break and outlast them for 2 hours. We had some help from external forces to rush siege flags... but we were mainly solo DarkLegion et al versus Reborn (ZERG :). They summoned a golem and went for the front gate. We rushed flags and the golem / driver. Golem goes down, damange done to siege flag but its a stalemate.... Reborn regroups, summons a Hog... it begins to attack the side wall, melee hit the wall. We figure out you can attack the melee from inside the wall by assiting on the NPC archers or a spotter on the wall... we rush the flags and make a failed attempt on the Hog driver / Hog. We watch as the Hog fires at our wall... its exciting times... ebb and flow... maybe partially mesmerized by seeing that big Hog for the first time and talking about the AOE damage it does on TS.... then Server crashes... Mayhem on TS... logins occur... back to where we were inside the castle but frozen waiting for the restart period to occur. I am inside the castle - my healer is on the wall... my second monitor shows no Hog!!! I look at Leath's monitor... all our NPC merc's are GONE!!! Frantic pm to GM's... Call it off! No fair! Battle re-start, Reborn regroups and ultimately takes Gludio from us. We are devasted, crestfallen. Our treasure gone, our dignity in tatters... we blame NCSoft.... we threaten a siege of our own on their Austin offices... I am willing to finance it. One week later, NCSoft weighs in with a verdict. Yes the server crashed, stuff happend (Reborn lost their Hog Cannon, their Siege Flags came back at full 'health' - We lost all the NPC guards that we placed, I assume the walls and front gate came back at full health. We lost, Reborn won. Lesson Learned. Right makes right and leave the excuses at the door.
It turns out that the Reborn victory at Gludio was a wakeup call for the server. They now owned 4 castles and that control was 'deemed' untenable by OTHER powers that be on the server. We willingly particpated in the planning and overthrow of Reborn... but it was a server effort. They lost all their Castles, we got Gludio back. I succesfully communed and DarkLegion / DarkIegion owned Gludio again.
At that time, I was able to accomplish my two goals that I thought of when beginning the game.... Own a castle (kind of cool, but a bit of a let down ------- and fly a Wyvern --- a BIG WHATUP to Garthiel for lending me his Stryder so I could take it upstairs, mount the Stryder (my first time) then talk to the NPC that turned the Styder into a Wyvern - I did not know him personally but that was pretty cool considering they were worth 60+ mill adena.
We held Gludio for a very long time. In time, Dasparion was formed (our alliance) and Korristian - Valor and Valorian had joined the Dasparion Alliance - named before the staff, thank you We handed Gludio over to him and he and his clan were exceptional lords to the people of Gludio. Korristian and Valor left the Dasparion on good terms and we left them with the Castle. We were given the opportunity to take over Oren - which we did and endeavored to be fair and equitable Castle lords and run a player-profitable Manor System in Oren - I still have a dual sword craft stamp in inventory is anyone needs one.
We lost Oren to many people - I can't remeber the Clan that took it... I died some many times that siege it seemed that I was constantly in a room with no doors, one NPC to port you out and about 50 of my fellow clan / alliance members. By that time, DarkLegion - its clans and alliance had fractured. I had asked Raiyn to leave our clans (she was in DarkIegion). It was a trust issue. Others left to join her - Kliptik... Dukester... many other valuable members of the clan / alliance (to me those two words are interchangeble for DarkLegion). Friends and Clan mates - leaving - an ugly split - Raiyn bad mouthed me... I had already said enough...breaking that age ole adage -> if you don't have anything nice to say.... I didn't. Her expulsion lead to a hemorage... that hemorage lead to worse (for me) and for what we had built.
PvP against our former clan mates, Clan War ensued - fighting my brothers and sisters... clan mates fighting ex-clan mates. It was ugly and disheartening. Man, what a tough game. Dasparion was in ruins... not from an external force... no one beat us except ourselves. But... and this is a big but, I respect those members and the choice they made. I used to say this to Cordy (good guy - joined Reborn for a time.. fought us, came back to us... When things got too serious I would say ultimately, Lineage 2 is a game and not to be taken too seriously. When we lost Oren and I was on the walls fighting from within (for the few minutes during that two hours I was not dead) and I was taking 1,000 K damage from Dukester (aura flare, spark, **** water cannons - LE Mages... hate em) every 1.39 seconds - a thought occured to me.
This was not going well... (understatement) ... But that was 'ok' Everything that was built during two years was NOT at 'risk' somehow - this situation, the castle, our status, our Alliance - all unimportant (After all, we NOT build anything but a temporary, illusionary, transient entity). This was happening because players had chosen a path that was... more interesting? fulfilling? exciting? At the time of the 'disembowlment' it was tough... at that moment on the wall... getting killed by a clannie... it was not. It was all good and I could sit back at my desk and marvel at the graphics, the arching electricity, my nearly empty HP bar the sheer magnitude and engrossing nature and think... man, what a cool game.
That of coure was not the end. DarkLegion members remained and stayed strong. Perhaps Dasparion was a force to be reckoned with no longer. We had strong players but our 30 could not project the same force as the new up and comers. Strong Clans... bigger alliances... cut throat politics. Dasparion was remade by Pacrat into Purgatory. We took our shots (Aden) and struggled (like everyone) with player activity level (or lack thereof), clan mates coming and going... general malaise of the High 50 and 60 leveling -Yeha.
It was a good run and I was proud to be a part of it and to have met everyone I did in DarkLegion, DarkIegion, DarkSomethingor other clan :), Dasparion and Purgatory. Whether we fought with you or against you, with very few exceptions, Hinde has some great peeps.
I am proud of what we accomplished on the server. We were never front runners, we were never the best or the biggest or the highest level. We had our share of the good and the bad. But I can honestly say, all in all, I shared my time in DarkLegion with some of the best players Hindemith has.
The situations and stories above are a small fraction of our collective experience in Lineage2. Many people have crossed our paths, have been in DL or DL clans, Dasparion and Purgatory. You may have fought us, with us, around us. Our story is, largely, Hindemith's. Please feel free to comment... or to tell your own story. I celebrate DarkLegion... its members... our alliance mates. That celebration is a celebration of Hindemith. Interaction has made that experience... enriched it. Thanks :)
No, I am not leaving. DarkLegion is done and I am looking forward to being a lackey (ok, contributing when I have to) in a new clan.. just beginning a new chapter. See you in game.
