Paladin for best tank against undead. DA for best tank for solo or small groups. DA's are more expensive due to needing crystals to summon their kitten. Where as, Paladins could raise a wolf for extra damage, but then they need to purchase food and pet armor/weapon.
I am very happy with my paladin. He is lvl 64 and awesome for raid bosses. I have, however, known a few DA's that ended up rerolling or quitting all together cuz they got bored with it. It comes down to personal choice I guess.

It really depends on what you mean by 'better'. There are a lot of Dark Avengers and fewer Paladins.
If by 'better' you mean what class will you advance faster with or be able to PvP better with or be more versatile, than DA it is.
But some people don't care about those things. I was really suprised at how much 'better' my Elven Oracle was in dealing with PvP than my Shillien Oracle. The running speed made a HUGE difference. Now most people won't play Elven Elders, they want Sillien Elders, because their perception of 'better' is different than mine.

Ya better is difficult... you will never lose a PvP with an EE in your party, yet people don't even think they are "averagely good". :p
Paladin also get some nice healing spells... that HP transfer saved our healer more than once in risky situations, especially when pulling mob trains... That's when paladin's a lot better than DAs. ;)
Tanks suck at higher levels. Only thing to look foward to after 65 is 75. But if you are determined to make one, you need to concider what you want out of the high end content. If you like PvP, go DA. If you want to be a PvE party tank, go Pali.
Not all tanks suck, i will agree that the the elven tanks arn't so great, and palidans are only PVE, but Dark Avengers rock. I'm a level 70 Dark avenger on the gustin server, i win most 1vs1 pvps, even against mages provided i'm wearing a heavy NM set with the magical defence bonus. In c4 the dark panther became more stronger with the use of pet SS.
even before i was high level i still won most battles with my tank, tanks can't win a battle in a few clicks and often require more stratagy. Even with our high magical defence, i will agree that we suck against mage type classes, hints the need for NM heavy(hold/sleep resist-the only thing that screws us). the use of tats or hp bonus weapons, weither or not to carry around a bow or when to activate UD can be really big factors in winning and losing a pvp. any battle with a tank is gauranteed to last longer than most dd vs dd fights out there, so they goda be planed out and carried out carefully.
As far as PVE, DA's don't only qualify just for small grps and soloing... that makes me laugh, DA's and pld share most of the same stats and skills, agression, hate aura, and even the same heavy armor bonuses! the only real diff between a pld and DA is the pld's ok heal and abilities against the undead. lets face the facts though, in a good group, a tank dosn't have the time to be healing himself, and will waste precious mana in the process, mana that could have been used to keep agro of mobs-> leading to down time. the pld's heal is only worth using when soloing or when pld is in a small grp which may not have the needed suport classes normally required to keep a good group.
In closing, the choice between pld and DA really reflects on what you want out of the game. Are you here to pvp? Do you wana also be good in groups>? then dark avenger is the choice for you. if you want to hone your tanking skills and just play the game for pve and not for the pvp, then pld is an ok choice. i never regret chosing DA, if anyone wants any tips on how to be a good DA or whatever, pm me via website or visit me on the gustin server
Paladins are probably the most useful PVP healer in the game. Sacrifice and their other heal means they get to heal something like 2.5k hp in under 2 seconds, and they get to wear heavy armor. The paladin in gropup PVP *is* a healer with good armor, not a tank. If you remember that, you'll be in good shape. If not, you'll hate the next 38 levels. :p
I am a 73 DA on Devianne, I know what a DA is good for. What I mean by "tanks suck" is they become less necessary, thus harder to level. If you have a buffslave, going out with your panther is awesome. Its like haveing a high level glad to duo with that only takes 15% of your exp and lets you keep all the drops.
