Common Scams

The other thread about scams made me think of something I posted for my clan, that might be good here.

Here are a few of the common scams I found today just in Giran within oh, 5 minutes.

Crystal Scam. This one can be done with any of the crystals but I see it on D the most. Notice how they are assuming you don't notice that the PRICE and AMOUNT are reversed. Works with ancient adena too, anything usually sold in big amounts.

Crystal Scam (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/CrystalScam.jpg)

Craft Shop Scam. This is usually done with the lower level crafts, silver mold, VOP, stuff like that. The title will say something like 10a craft, 1-4 crafts, etc. It looks dead obvious but when there's only one shop in Giran making something you need to craft a weapon you don't always pay good attention.

Craft Scam (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/CraftScam.jpg)

Bow shaft scam. The popular one now is for Bow of Peril shafts because everyone wants one, a finished one is around 40 mill, and the shafts are usually 1 mill+ each. And the fact that bow shafts look EXACTLY LIKE STEMS doesn't help anything. I've seen up to 3 shops at once trying to pull this one. Same goes for soul bow shafts.

Bow Scam (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/BowScam.jpg)

A-ss, A-sps, B A-sps scam. The noob SS shots look almost exactly like the A grade ones, so people try to sell the no grade ones as a-ss. Here's a picture of the scam and a shot from a real shop.

A-SS Scam (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/AssScam.jpg)

Name scam. I've had this tried on me 3 times so far but this is my best example. I'm sitting right by Stiltzz, and someone pm's me with the name Stlltzz. You can see the real Stiltzz talking in ally chat, and I have him targeted. Usually the person doing this says the EXACT SAME THING as in this picture. That should be the first tip off, I mean how many of your friends talk like such a ****** anyway? Usually if you try to target the faker person, they aren't even in town, but their alt trying to get your weapon is.

Trade Weapon Scam (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/Scammer.jpg)

Soul Ore/A Crystal Scam

I couldn't find anyone actually doing this but I know it has been done. I set up shop to show the example. The shop title is A crystals but I'm selling soul ore. I put them side by side, see how very similar they are?

Soul Ore - A Crystal (http://www.elliebelly.net/avatars/SoulOreScam.jpg)

** Adding**

Some other scams are so stupidly elaborate I can't even screenie it.

One involves items that have the same icon, like the BOP shaft and a stem. Someone starts a trade with a BoP shaft, you see it, they cancel the trade. They say oops, do it again, put in a stem instead, and you lose a lot of money. I hate hate hate trade windows and always tell people to make a shop.

Another almost no one does, because it takes too much effort but it's worked before. You yell that you want say, a DC robe. Scammer1 says they have one but they want you to buy X item for them and you can then trade it for the robe. Scammer2 has X item for 20 mill, you think woot I'll get a DC robe cheap, you buy it, try to get scammer1 to trade you the robe, only to find out X item is worth like 50 cents. Scammer1 logs out off the face of the earth.

The second one assumes you don't know what the X item is worth to begin with, and don't mind running errands for some random person you don't know. Everytime I think this is the stupidest scam ever, I heard someone falls for it.

I wouldn't worry about joining Mensa...

Sticky, please.

Yes please :)
Quantity scam. Selling 1 AA for 1,234,567 Adena.
That falls under the crystal scam, which is just price/quantity switching. Crystals were just an example.
This thread has been stickied as a warning for other players. This thread is not intended to accuse or report specific players of scamming, so please keep any replies to advice or suggestions. Thank you!
My i make a suggestion mistryl.....

Remove all posts other then yours and EllieBelly And lock it. If EllieBelly has anything new to add, she could PM you the details.

You're right. I was thinking of another scam involving soul ore.
Soul ore no longer looks exactly like crystals , so I really haven't seen that one since.
This is hard to get screenshots but I remember the craft scam from back in c1. I had quite a few dwarves let me know that they could craft a Sword of Revolution for just 1.2m if I was willing to give them the adena and wait a few minutes for them to buy supplies. This is up there with offering free enchants on weapons if people let them have it for a minute.

I saw the Soul Ore/Crystal A scam a few times on test but that is very similar to the Bow Shaft/Stem scam in its origin. (Wasn't there a Dark Screamer/Doom Dagger scam that worked in a similar way?)

Not really a money scam but definitely worth warning new players about is that they should beware of who they buff. I saw a few people on test still asking for buffs and then flagging right as the buff was cast to get the buffer to flag so they could kill them.
Yes but a lot of those old scams no longer work. Leather and crafted leather no longer look the same. Same with soul ore and crystals, same with a dark screamer and doom dagger; the graphics are different. The font was also changed so names can't look EXACTLY alike.

Another scam that no longer works is where a person would have a buy shop up for something but didn't have the money to actually buy the item.
Did they fix the brig/bone helmet one? i know thats pretty popular

Did they fix the brig/bone helmet one? i know thats pretty popular

They still look the same.
I believe there are only two textures for helmets. The brown leather looking one and the metal one.
That's what I'm thinking of, thanks. I thought they had changed both but I guess not. I'll add that one.
That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure, since it seems like A cry have more debth and are more "glassy" - so there is a difference. Unless it's an optical illusion...
No it's a lot like NG SS and A SS. There's a bit more depth to the A SS but it's still, VERY similar .
A friend of mine unfortunately had fallen to scammers quite frequently. This is a very common scam and there isn't really a screen shot for this but I feel I should put this here in this thread so people know what to look for and becareful.

On 2 seperate occassions my friend, a gladi, had trusted the wrong people. They would befriend him, party with him for awhile and even talk with him occassionally on the phone. Once they gain his trust they ask to borrow gear of his. He lost his dual raids by this the first time.

The 2nd time was even worse. A girl had played with his feelings...she was apparently "new" to the game but not new enough she didn't know how to scam. He had helped her level from level 1 to 36, talked with her over the phone many times...they even had plans to meet each others IRL. Well Shortly after he had gotten his BW she asked if she could equip it just to see what she looked like. He was scammed before but he thought he knew her enough to trust her...so he let her. Then she asked for the duals so she can see what she looks "complete". It was then he grew suspicious and he said no. She then says "bye bye" puts him on ignore, then logs. When he called her she "claims" she quit lineage, but if that was true she wouldn't have a need to steal his BW. Most likely she intends to transfer to her alt and re-roll...after all she only leveled to 36.

It's pretty sick that people would choose pixels in a game over true friendship. I hope this will help people out, and prevent people from falling under the same scams. It's not a rare scam at all unlike some may think...it's pretty common ><
That's the worst kind of scam
Befriend the victim, and then run off with their stuff, once they have built up trust.
Something like this happened to friends of mine. The difference is, that it was a clannie, who probably didn't intend to steal the stuff when he borrowed it, but that's what he ended up doing, because it didn't suit him to give the stuff back at that time, when people wanted to get it back. Other people had to pay for the things he had stolen, because they didn't want him to be KOS. What a friend, huh?
Someone in my alliance fell for the "run errands for me" scam just yesterday. >.<

Someone in my alliance fell for the "run errands for me" scam just yesterday. >.<

Explain that one...
I think he's talking about the big obscure one I posted in the original post. .

I believe there are only two textures for helmets. The brown leather looking one and the metal one.

Low level cloth hat is gandalfesque
Oh yeah! haha, that blue one :)
can you help me try out my new jewlry set .... after you hit them with your lowest lvl spell without a weapon you will still kill the toon that is actually lvl 1 with no jewlry ... you are red now gl
i need buffs ... after you begin to cast they hit you ... you are now flagged gl

i need buffs ... after you begin to cast they hit you ... you are now flagged gl

on my EE if u do that, you made a VERY bad mistake. i will root/sleep then smack u then sleep etc. until i get bored which would take awhile :) (i carry greater acumen pots boosting my cast speed to 820 so unless its another sps [which wouldnt want my buffs eneways] ill be able to out cast it and play for awhile. (when i do get bored i can cast my return skill pretty **** fast)
There is one I havent seen in a long time but it happened to me in closed beta, I thought hot **** someones selling NGss for 5 each, but I ended up selling all my NGSS for 5.

Only tim I was ever scammed.
Another crafting scam:

A dwarf sets up to craft basic mats for 1a and lets you run out her mp. When you go to shop around while her mp regens, she stands back up and changes her shop to 1 mil per craft. The unlucky sap usually doesn't realize that the price has even changed until they've already clicked to craft a couple times.
there are still some doozie scam in giran if you pay close enough attention...

someone actually yells "!C B AND A crystals CHEAPEST IN GIRAN!!" when they are buying. they buy c for 2k, b for 6k, and afor 9k. poor dopes dont realize its a buy shop :p

i saw once a package sale shop with brig including helmet labelling brig helm for 500k. shirt and pants were 3m each lol. shop title was BRIG HELM CHEAP.

theres the old old scam that existed before package sale shops, where people would list all of the item for a fixed amount (i.e. 550 stems for 500k) but you couldnt purchase by bulk, you had to buy them one by one. lol, thats a bad situation if you need 5 stems to make some arrows :o

i saw once a package sale shop with brig including helmet labelling brig helm for 500k. shirt and pants were 3m each lol. shop title was BRIG HELM CHEAP.

The package shops are introducing a whole new type of scam.

I agree. The seem to serve no other purpose. One could make the arguemnt its so you could sell an entire set of armor, well what if I dont want to buy the whole thing? Thats just cutting out potential customers who may have a partial set. Remove sale by bulk, its stupid.
bulk sales have thier uses, i for one really hate selling all but 1 piece of an armor set and then having it sit in my warehouse or inventory till i decide its never getting out in any way but crystals -.-

and to add to the scam i see most frequently with the package/bulk sell shops: the seller advertises 'cheap weapon with free SS' or something similar... the weapon is well priced, but the shots are 4-5x what you would buy them for normally. example: selling a sword of revolution with 4k DSS for 50a each. If you buy from a package shop, check and double check all the items listed there!
Yes I am.

Someone in my alliance yelled in town "WTB Homu sword +5/+6!"

Someone else yells back, "I have a homu sword, I'll give it to you if you can find me Orc Amulets X, Y & Z!"

Someone else a few minutes later yells, "WTS Orc Amulets"

So the guy PM's the amulet seller, asking if he's got the amulets. Guy says yes, 5M for all 3. He PM's the Homu sword guy back, says, I found the amulets, you still have the swords? Guy says yes.

So he goes and buys the 3 orc amulets for 5M (which he later finds out are common amulets buyable in the store for much less than 1M) and goes looking for the guy with the sword.

Guy with sword actually PM'ed him back to notify him that he'd just been scammed and said that he hoped it didn't put him out too much, then logged.
nice. gotta try that sometime :)
I hope it doesn't work out for you.

well dont ever tell me you havent tried overpricing your own equipment when you go to sell it.

everyone scams when opportunity presents itself.

when you see a good deal, youll bite. cos you know you can profit from it.

im not a scammer as a general rule, but that does seem like a real awesome wicked plan.
Overpricing is not a scam, the item and the price clearly displays in a shop, people can then decide whether or not it's worth it to them. If it isn't and no one buys at that price, a normal person would just lower it until it does sell. Besides, overpricing is a matter of perspective. 100 mill for a majestic circlet might seem border illegal to a newbie, but to me that's not half bad price.

but thats exactly my point. it IS a scam when you price it for 80m cos nobody wants it at the time. its also a scam to sell it 200m. only the foolerest of foolers would go in for that. but they always do.
I think you're missing the whole definition of the word scam. It means a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation. If I put 1 varnish in my shop for 10,000,000, what is deceptive about that? You can read the price just as well as anyone. I don't do that either, it's just an example.

The scam would be if I said one thing but did another. If I said CHEAP VARNISH 100a!!! And had a shop up for 10,000,000 instead, that's a scam.

Oh yeah, it's a real awesome wicked plan alright...until you're the one who's scammed, right?

Everyone scams when the opportunity presents itself? I think not...that very decision of scamming someone or not will speak volumes about one's true character (or lack thereof)...

There is nothing cool about taking advantage of other people...the economy is overinflated as it is, even without this kind of blatant deception...
I think these bulk shop scams are just too obvious. Does anybody really fall for those? Actually, I have a habit of just double-clicking items in bulk-shops to save the time of adding the prices myself and check the total. This way you would instantly recognise a scam. This scam is even more obvious than the price-amount-changes.

The most dangerous scams will always be the ones described, where somebody earns your trust over a longer period of time. But I have seen people run away with weapons from clannies, where another guy in the clan even knew the runaway irl. I also remember back in c1 there was once a case where a clan leader ran away with the whole clan warehouse and several ten million adena (which was an awful lot back then...). There really isn't much you can do to prevent this kind of scams, except to realise there are a lot of [censored] in the world out there and not to trust anybody, not even clan-mates. Or at least never lend out items you can't live without. I for myself would never give my weapon even to my best friend without having him give me his weapon or something else of similar value instead.

I think the original post is quite a nice collection. But it won't make it unnecessary to be very careful when buying or selling stuff and always check and double-check every offer, especially when it looks too good to be true.

you would be surprised.

very,

very,

surprised.
All of the scams would be prevented if everyone read things carefully. It's just nice to have an extra reminder to go hmm bow shaft, I better be really, really careful.
another i used to see back in elven village all the time, very hard not to recognise but innocent newbies fell for it all the time, and although its a little harder to pull off now that they adjusted weightp enalties, that doesnt mean its impossible with the right buffs:

person with a shop up that says 'punch me for free adena' or -free gear' or -free buffs' ... what the innocent newbie doesnt know is the shop person (usually a lowbie themselves) has a very full inventory and either a friend or alt nearby ready to kill and loot you as soon as you go red from punching the shop for your free buff/adena/gear.

i dont know how many times i was called out to the southwest bridge in elf town to res someone who fell for that, far too many for sure.
I don't understand this scam.... Spell it out to me :o
That won't really work well any more since you don't drop with 5 pk's or under if you go red.

I don't understand this scam.... Spell it out to me

lol, well... say elf1 has Decrease Weight, or the preacher buff... then withdraws enough items from thier warehouse or purchases them at a shop to give them a level 3 weight penalty 90% or higher. when that buff wears off, you'll be over 100% weight and be unable to move/cast/regen... the only thing you CAN do is set up a shop. now, setting a shop that says "Punch me for free gear" with low HP already. anyone who would hit the person would kill them instantly, even if they only did 1 or 2 damage, making them red. and the shop person would have a friend nearby to kill any red who were tricked into pking them, and loot thier corpse as well. :p

That won't really work well any more since you don't drop with 5 pk's or under if you go red.

it could still happen, although a LOT less likely with the 5pk rule, you'd just need to find someone who likes pvp/pk and is still rather gullible :p
Someone just tried to pull a scam on me...going something like this...

Goober: I like that dagger, what is it called?
Me: Mithril Dagger
Goober: Awesome, hey will you trade it with me so I can see its P. Atk?
Me: Eh? You want me to trade you my dagger?
Goober: Yeah, just so I can see its P. Atk. See? Like my weapon here *trade request is sent to me, which I decline*
Me: Uhhh, I can't do that...this dagger is on loan from my clan. I'll TELL you the P. Atk. It's 80.
Goober: Cool, my weapon P. Atk is 31 (it was a mace of some sort)

Am I just an idiot, or was this guy trying to rip me off, eh? lol
No you're not an idiot, either that person was or they were trying to scam. It's like the name scam, only without trying to pretend they are someone you know.
ROFL i just had this happen to me while i was on my newly rolled SO. gave her low D so she could support herself.

Player: Youre an SO?
me: yeah. youre a cleric right?
Player: yep, my heals kick *****
Me: i know.
Player: youve got ok heals, bu lemme show you my heal with your weapon. it will blow your mind.
Me: fraid not.
Player: ?
Me: *whips out humunkulus*
Player: whats that?
Me: homunukulus sword. best C grade for me :)
Player: wow, can i try it?
Me: pay 11m. then you can try it as much as you like.
Player: but i just want to try it.
Me: no.
Player: !EBAYER ALERT!!!!
Me: just cos i pwn j00.

player messin with me to scam my weapon away. TWICE!

so i pkd him for calling me ebayer.
Here is a scam, it is called the sticky wep scam it is usually done by alts, someone will say something along the lines of WTB SoR (or any wep) 3mil (any price) and victem would think "Cool, I could get top D grade with that" so he PMs the scammer, the scammer would say "Wanna group?" if you said ok he'll invite you to a distribution by turn group. He will then say, "drop you wep on the ground please i wanna see if you wep points upward when it is on the floor" victem would drop it then pick it right back up and the wep would go to the scammer.
ah, yes. that old trick. if ya fell for that one, you have my pity.
Heh I've heard of people using that one too. It's sort of, why would I care what it looks like on the ground?

Truly vile, that is...I'm sure glad that this thread exists. Nothing like good ol' education to stay informed and defended against the ill-intentioned out there...

Good to know that I'm at least perceiving potential threats to be what they are.

I still don't get it lol....
The person who is pulling the scam has all that crap in inventory... why? Why does it matter that they can't move? Do they make themselves overweight, so they don't regen HP? Is that the trick?

I believe it used to be; especially before CP. They'd trick someone into going red, someone else would kill them and they'd (hopefully) drop stuff. I can't see it working now. Besides, who wants NG drops?
Yes, the trick was if you were overweight you would not regen HP, so you could stay at like 10 HP even when sitting. But with CP you have an extra buffer, not sure if being overweight stops CP regen too.
I don't see it mentioned here, but the bulk stores have opened up a whole new set of scams that I've seen. Let's say someone sets up a shop with EAB's, 3 of them. They'll price two of them at, say, 150,000. Great bargain! And then the third at 5 million or something. There's a lot of variations of this trick.
You'll only fall victim to that one and most others if you cannot read / are blind.

Or tired or in a hurry or distracted by rl or inebriated...
If your in a hurry distracted etc you should just stay away from store sells, you need both your eyes in order to see good deals and avoid scams. I still cannot and i doubt i ever will understand how people can fall victim to scammers. If a deal sounds to good to be true, it most likely is.

Human beings are flawed...we make mistakes, and have lapses in judgments...sometimes, we just don't pay attention. What's really so difficult to understand about that? Have you ever made a mistake (rhetorical question here)? Once you understand how mistakes can be made, it's not that difficult to understand how people can fall victim to a scam or deception. This is especially true of the rather insidious scams/deceptions that are specifically built to distract one's attention from the unscrupulous goal being driven.

Add to that the ol' truth that appearances can be deceiving (and that some people actually prefer to profit from ignorance and/or misunderstanding, or flat-out trickery) and you have a quagmire of possible theft and skullduggery...
you see a red dwarf outside the gates hv, he see's you and jumps off the cliff. If you follow him/her down you find that your hp is almost gone and there is another red down there to greet you.
Thats a long winded way to pointlessly pk someone...
Serves you right really for thinking your gunna get a free meal from the dwarf, hardly a scam is it. More of a hustle.
i can say i got hit by the name scam. nothing was done about it all was lost. how i wish i had seen this post earlier.
Regarding the "let's trade so i can look at your item scam". It probably wasn't a scam. Some people do it to look at the weapon stats. You can view them in trade window by clicking on them. As long as you don't click on the accept trade button. you're ok. :). Good to be cautious though
Do what NCsoft says, go to the website/fansite and look at the stats :P
Sadly, I was scammed yesterday. I am new to the game and wasn't thinking clearly or something. Here is how it went.

I am level 20, just reached it. A friend gives me a set of Mythrel Armor (robe and legs). So there I am in Grulin(sp) wearing the yellow outfit. I had just gotten my level 20 buffs and started casting them wildly on passersby. Anyways this one guys says thanks for the buffs and we start chatting back and forth. After about an hour of talking I felt that the guy was on the level. He invited me to team with him which I accepted. He said that he could "upgrade" my gear to Sage level. I send him a trade invte. He accepts. I place my leftover Devotion armor in the window. He declines the trade and said "no I can upgrade your Mythrel armor." Right there should have been a clue to me, how did he even know what armor I had on cause I never mentioned it to him. But being a gullible newbie I handed over the Mythrel robe and legs figuring him being a high level would know something I didn't and upgrade my gear. He said wait here and he would TP over to the place to do it, then come back. We had been on friendly terms to even go so far as to add each other to friends list. We were already at the TP person so I see him turn to the TP person, he disappears from my screen and seconds later I see he is no longer Offline. At first, I figured maybe he just got disconnected when he zoned. So I waited. 15 minutes goes by and he is still offline. Then I knew I had been scammed. I shouted in the area I was in about him and from others in the area found out his level and class. He had been shouting Looking For Raid, from what I got from others in the area. So I took and put on my Devotion stuff and went on about my playing, feeling down for a while having known I was scammed. It was about six or 8 hours later and I get the message, xxxxx has logged on. I immediately sent a message to him, wheres my armor. I never got a response back and within a minute of my first message was put on their ignore list.

I guess you can say it was a lesson learned to never trust no-one unless you truely, really know them and even then they can't be fully trusted.

I'm sorry you had to find that out first hand :(

BTW Almost everyone knows what mithril robes look like - it's commonly refered to as "the banana suit".
What really got my goat.

I send a petition in game and listed the details of what happened. What I got back in response in short, Sorry to hear this happened, however we are not able to do anything about it, you have to deal with this issue with the party involved.

How can you when the other party has you on ignore?

PS. I realize now, after others pointed out, of how the guy knew what I was wearing. "Banana Suit" was the key.

PPS: The person who originally gave me the Mythrel, gave me another set. Now that is someone I am truely thankful for. I would mention their name, but I don't want them to get scammed like I was.
I don't agree with this, but it's perfectly legal to scam in L2, as long as it's in game items you're getting scammed out of.

Too bad but true indeed. There is no written law that protects it. Still it's pretty sad to scam lowbie characters, especially when they are new to the game.
Yeah, what a welcome to get :(
What you do when you buy a new game/program/device? You learn about it. How do you do that? You read about it from various sources of information.

How do you get scammed? A. You didnt do your homework, you didnt check for any info about the game before you started playing. B. You trust people too easily. C. You were drunk/tired/stoned/****** off or just somehow not paying attention.

If all the new people would check this forum, or any other L2 fan forums, they would quickly learn about scams and all the other stuff. If people would read the EULA they would never get scammed by the "Send us your account details" -emails. If they would keep their eyes open they would not fall for "Soul Ore as A-crystals" -scams.

So, next time, when you get a new clanny/friend/anything, point them to the boards. If your friend starts to play L2, make sure that they know about all the nasty things. I hate it when someone gets scammed, and later on their friends get scammed in the same way. And why is this possible you ask? Because people dont warn their friends. They dont teach them.

New players are left in the dark, and most of them find out about scamming the hard way, since even if they had friends/clannies/anything, they are most often not told about all the scams. They aint directed to the boards(face it, only a small fraction reads these boards so they aint really a reliable way of transferring information to the masses of players).

I'm mostly rambling on... anyway, scamming lowbies is sad, but you know what's even more sad? The fact that the old players, the ones who know about the shady world of L2 already, dont warn them about it. That's what I'd call really sad.
You know, I been noticing a lot of people scamming on every Server I been on. I also been noticing these scammers well use a name from someone on the game. Like lets say My name KizarokoMusamoto<Good luck Scamers to spell out that whole name.> They would replace the I with a L like KlzarokoMusamoto for example. Just using a name of someone you know in your Clan or Allie. You guy gotta watch these name and make sure there your friends and not some ******* who trying to steal your stuff. Common sence is your friend. I am also noticing the same stuff on EQ, WoW and RF Online with these scammers. It just our game. So becareful people, that all I gotta say.

and so much for my grammer too... Gah, I give up.

Indeed this is the most known technique they use. Even my name has been used to scamm off people...Just one HUGE mistake they made...They didn't have the right haircolor :p

Anyways...It's sad to say that thereis no rules against it so for future newcomers I can only advise to NOT let yourself be had with the excuse that someone can Change your current gear into something else as that is NOT possible. Be wara when trading with people...Always make sur you check the name of the one you deal with and never click on the OK button till you are totally sure.

I'm sad to hear you've had to learn it the hard way Inergia, but I've seen and heard it has not killed your spirit for the game itself ;)

As for Charmile's remarks, she has a good point and I hope that more of us HONEST players can help out the newcomers in preventing such dramas.
First time I saw this one. Someone in Giran was selling a "Rare Hairpin" for just under 3 million. That's what first got my attention. It appeared that the person was selling that stupid hairpin you get as a quest reward (Grandma's Hairpin?) from Dwarven village; worth like 100 adena, I believe.
Oh wow, that's a new one. There are a few rare items (firefly ring, racoon ring) that you get from dwarven quests that almost no one knows about either. Maybe the real hairpins should have some kind of grade.
The name scam seems to be quite popular on Gustin server at the moment, had it happen to myself, a few friends and several clannies. No-one fell for it tho. I think the fact that the scammer has no idea how you and your friends/clannies speak to each other is a big clue to the fact it's a scam. I got a pm from a supposed clannie who I was partying with at the time.

"XYZ is really me give her your weapon" was laughable to say the least.
In giran people says "crystal C very cheap" and its soul ore...
Oh another thing that's really funny, there are a couple of peeps on Gustin (Hunters and Aden I think) called something like Mercams .....

Rearrange - LMAO -

gustin is pretty bad my clan leader thought she was giving her stuff to her brother zathina.....as it turned out it wasnt zath and melbane just reaching b gr lost all her new shiny stuff  i think id cry....
omg...that's a lotta trouble to go thru for a scam -.o
personally...i think buy low sell high is a type of scam (kindda feel guilty everytime i do it o.o)
i mean after all that's what messed up the economy in the first place...
A new scam ive seen involves the new package sale feature on the private shops. The scammer sells a brigadine set for 4m but instead of getting a brigadine helm, you get a leather helm.

Falls under the regular item scam, happens a lot with A grade helmets.
That one has been around for a long time. Though it's usually a Bone helmet - I guess because people are used to shortening it to "brig", so they just see the title of the shop advertising brig. Four letter word starting with B... Maybe I'm overanalyzing.

Same thing with Leather gauntlets for Elven Mithril Gloves, that share the same graphic. Sad :(
I like this scam personally...with a D grade helm, yell WTS Helmet 120m. Whoever is stupid enough to buy it just got scammed by you. =D *coughSeanofavaloncough*
Another forms of trade scams:

They gank your lowbie alt or clannie, knowing your main or higher velev clannies would come. Then they boceme PKed, high level is red and probably has >5 PKs. So either he/she logs out, or removes all gear and trade it to another clannie so it does not drop when being killed with karma. But you get flooded with trade requests from wrong persons, and not paying attention in that excitement or anger, you trade your gear to them. Happened to clannie, she lost BW set.

Also another scam came with introduction of monster derby area: it is usual many people go there to avoid teleporting from distant town and trade or exchange gear there. So you port in, and you get targeted with some random trade request. Unfortunately if you really want to trade someone, and do not pay attention, you can lost some stuffs that way.

Also icons for SoM and Stiletto look very similar, saw this shop scam at least 5 times this chronicle.
Which is why I always say, if you are the one giving away the gear, YOU initiate the trade by using /target {name} and /trade.
I dont know that this would be considered a scam but to me it is. A person is running trough a lowbe cata with a huge train shouting help me please. Some lowbe toon thinking sure i can do this hits on mob in the train and bam he or she is dead. Any dropped items are free game to anyone around. ( this happened to my friend once it was one of those rare OMG death drops.. like seal stones and i wanna say he dropped an overenchanted weapon he carryed uneq-ed)

About name scams, they are rather bad on lionna atm. when i am in game is very rare you see me with out my rl boyfriend (toon version) right close to me. I have had the same dorf come up to me and try to scam me with his toon name atleast 10 times and still hasnt learned.
It isn't that they havent learned, it's that they want to catch you off guard.

And no that other one has been around since open beta.. there was even a post about a player famous for **** that it the elven fortress. But pretty soon we'll have that patch were you don't drop at death anyway.
New to L2 but so many of these scams are prominent in other MMO's. As others have mentioned the only way to be safe is to check and double check everything before trading anything. Plenty of times I have had tells from friends in EQ but the names were just slightly differentlt spelt.
I have some friends/clannies that recently got scammed/lost their gear.

friend nr1.
His clan was going to franz, and he dident wanna come with them. his clan-leader PMed a cousin, that apparently had his password, and asked for it, for some reason. he dident think it was suspicious so he gave it to the leader. he emptied the account and sold the stuff and moved to franz server.
- to help my friend I gave him BW set and some tsu*tsu duals. have only seen him on once the past 2 months lol. did I get scammed in return? well, maybe. I dont trade gear if Im not villing to lose it.

clanie 1. said he got key-logg hacked. im not sure about this one, if its realy what happened...

clanie 2. got namescammed. aparently a co-leader of our alliance PMed him and asked fr all his gear, so he traded it. (why would anyone ask for ALL your gear? :S
anyway, it wasent him.

I just cant belive how people get scammed so easily. I guess if you are drunk or on drugs or something, but normaly? no.
On Lionna there is one scammer that uses names of your clan members and sends you PMs while he has a dwarf (female) asking for a trade. He usualy asks for your weapon to see the patk that he gets when holding it.

It's funny when the scammer uses your name and try to scam your alt...I usualy tells him that I am the name he tryes to scam. He usualy logs or runs to the next clan member to try the same trick.

You never see the char that PM's you only hes little dwarf standing next you.
Yes, that's the one listed under the trade weapon scam.
i dont know if this is listed or not but heres one i had tried on me a while ago. your shouting in giran that you WTB something. someone pms you and says, "i have what you want but i will only trade for chill flame sb. its really rare" then you see someone shouting the are selling it for 7m. so when u buy it from him they both log and your stuck with a worthless lvl 7 sb.
Yes it is, it's the last one listed.
I've heard rumours that you can loose gear just by opening a trade window from a scammer, that they somehow can work around the trade routine and get your stuff even if you haven't dragged something to the trade window or clicked "ok". Anyone know if there is substance in this?

Setting up shops is always a safe way to trade with someone you don't know. Use that, and always let the big red alarm go off anytime pm's start flooding in, even if it might be from someone you know. Distraction is the primary weapon of a scammer.

Anyone know if there is substance in this?

If it were the case, I'm fairly certain it would be deemed an exploit.

People can see your gear, but this is the first I would have heard about someone actually being able to take it.
It would be an exploit, I can try it with my alts or something.

If this were the case we'd be hearing a lot about it. So far, I've heard nada.
PvP scam. Someone runs to you, flags on you and immediatly set up a private store like "Look at that, it's cheap". If you try to click on him, instead of opening trade window you attack him back, and he kills you while you're flagged.

why trade with someone who jsut flagged you? tardness ftl
That reminds me of the overweight one, where a person would go overweight, drain down to 1 hp, taunt you.. or something.. and if you even sneezed on them you went red.

why trade with someone who jsut flagged you? tardness ftl

In fact it looks like he's trying to attract your attention. You think "Oh, this guy is a salesman doing his direct marketing stuff".
It smells like fish to me.

I don't hit people if I don't want to kill them or get killed by them - and I hope you don't market like that, or your exp will be going down fast and steep. :p
Appologies if already mentioned, but watch out for the BREZ scammers- typical shop scam, sign reads "BREZ" or "Cheap BREZ" and inside they are actually only selling standard potionshop/grocery store rez scrolls.

I almost fell for it, being basically a lowbie and never using BREZ's before (was buying for a group of high level clannies who had *cough* wiped), but luckily wondered why the scrolls that I moused over didnt say "Blessed" and compared the icons to the rez scroll I carried at the time. Found three people in Giran near the GK doing that and a player in Rune doing that (all near the GK).
They do this with blessed pet rezzes as well.
It has been mentioned but not specifically, I mentioned soul ore/D crystals, bow shafts/stem, NG/A-SS... can't really screenie every replacement item people try to pull though, the list would be a mile long :)
Totally forgot about these scams, with Mistryl gone maybe someone else can add it to the first post for me?

1) "Hey give me your weapon I know a trick and can enchant it for free"

Generally used on new players only that don't understand game mechanics, such as how non grade items cannot be enchanted, and if the person truly wanted to upgrade your graded item (D, C, etc) they could just give you the scrolls for it first. You trade the item and they vanish is what will happen though. The GMs can't do anything for you and you're doubly sunk because you were gunning for a possibly exploit as well. Unclean hands isn't going to help your case even if you go crying to random players.

2) "Drop your weapon, I want to see if it lays down or sticks in the ground, I'll stand way way over here ok?".

Another goofy one. One or more players invite you to a party and then suggest you drop your weapon to see how it looks. They try to placate you by walking a far enough distance that they couldn't POSSIBLY pick it up before you do. However if the loot is set on anything but main looter (by turn, random) it's likely after you drop it and spam pick up right away, that it will go to the other person due to the group looting rules.

It is of course dumb to drop any item on purpose at any time but even more so if someone ASKS you to. Tell them to drop their own junk.
i found a scam a few days back that kinda made me laugh.
some guy was saying he was buying mats, and had a sell-shop. and he actually managed to pull it off. After braggin how much money he had
Yeah that old switcharoo too, people do that with shots a lot as well.
Sad that people do that and some people fall for it, the sell shops should be easy enough to distinquish.
FYI - Red Gems from the card game quest in Aden and A grade Gemstones look identical. Thanks to "Golit" on Hindemath, I am done playing this game for now and have cancelled my account. No more Prophet LFG... I know this is a minor scam but the fact I can't pk the scam shops.....

I should be back at some point when I am no longer ticked.
Ah yep figures that one would come up. Too bad they aren't quest items. People did the same with inf ore and lava stones.
There is a new scam on Franz... Making add/shout with 'selling plate leather boot lining' and having plate leather gaiter materials for sale at 400-500k which are easy to spoil
Saw a staff of life for sale for 120mil the other day - advertised as an arcana mace... If anyone falls for this... I'm inclined to think they deserved it.
one funny scam i saw was like this:

-Ancient Adena for sale - 1 Adena for one 1 AA-

now who would sell it for that price? when i opened the shop, the price was over 2 million, and there was only 1 AA for sale. so that someone in hurry would just rush in and take 'em, and notice that he has bought one AA for over 2 million adena.

pretty poor scam...:P
Yep that's a pretty common one with anything sold in large amounts.
Its pretty sad when you see someone actually falling for it :(
I bought a block of soul ore thinking they were D crystals.
Luckily it was on Teon and I hardly play that server so it was no great loss. I used the soul ore too.
Yeah, its too easy to scam with those things.
Someone tried the weapon trade scam on me today. They must of saw me in Aden standing with PP. They made a character very closely named (Nlraya instead of Niraya).

However little did they know Niraya isn't only a fellow clannie. I also had her 2 boxed then lol (yes she's my own leveled PP). A little dwarf stands next to me and the "Nlraya" messages me asking me to trade it to the dwarf. Stupid dwarf "That's my character". "Oh" and nothing else.

2 clannies standing in Aden for a good few hours. You think they'd maybe make the connection...
That same one has happend to me! I was standing in town RIGHT NEXT to my 2 boxed SE ((BuffAngel)) and I got a random PM from a toon named BuffAngei saying "hey! nice dagger, may I please see it? I would like seeing how it looks on me."
now first off, even if BuffAngel wasn't my 2 box, im sure if I or one of my friends had made that PM it would be somthing more along the lines of "hey i lyk ur daggr can i c it rq?" :P but atm thats not the point xD
So as BuffAngei continues to pm me saying "Just trade it to ______. That's my dwarf she'll trade it to me" all I can think is "what kind of an idiot is trying to pull this??" there are SO many flaws with this scam....

1) The REAL BuffAngel is RIGHT next to me, so surely if BuffAngel was talking, I would see a chat box above her head, right?
2) Why the heck would I need to trade somthing to someone's dwarf first when they're standing right next to me??
3) Me and my SE are in the same clan, so i donno about you, but if I was trying to see somthing from my clannie i'd ask 'em in clan chat!
4) The dwarf is in NG with a name that looks as if it was accidently typed when the player was so drunk as they created the character that they passed out on their keyboard hitting all the keys at once ((example:nhlmfhiirau))

so obviously after the constant PM'ing and trade requests i simply said "BuffAngel is my alt" and I got the response "oh. I see..." and they logged :P

also happend back when i started the game as a sorc and my clan leader was on vacation. someone logged in and said "hey i need your gear fast this is ((clan leaders name here)) someone just killed me and i need to go get them back but i dont have time to get on ((clan leaders toon name here)) pls, fast give me your gear"
I was a newb, but i knew enough to know that a lvl 70+ BD couldnt use mid D grade robes and a staff of life to kill other 70+s and the fact that the person they claimed to be was on vacation for 2months didnt really help the scammer much either :P

dont ya just love it when scams go terribly wrong?! :) makes for a good laugh at times xD
They're called Opportunists. They'll go for anything they can, even if it makes them look stupid. Just think, if they attempt to scam 50 people a day and one person falls for it and hands over a top C grade weapon they can earn themselves 7 a week. That's 100m a week through scams. Very clever IMO.

As much as it's wrong you have to give credit where needed. If someone was stupid enough to hand over a weapon they deserve to lose it.

Before anyone flames me, I'm not endorsing it, just pointing out the facts.
Only 1% of the whole lineage2 community really are morally agaienst it and would never do it

the rest are b-hurt cos they fell for a scam in the past lol and didnt think of it first :>
See, that's awesome. Rational thought. If everyone did that no one would ever fall to the weapon scam.
Its just like when i was using the Raid boss Medusa strategy, which others were calling a bug.

Now see i created it on kain at least, prehaps first in NA? not too sure but no one used it before me, many reported me for being smart,

because they got b.hurt and didnt have the medusa BD to do it like i did and thought it was unfair,

I guess that could be said for scamming.

If i trade someone and they give me their ic set, am i a scammer if i keep it? Especially if its a war tag (lol like janet did)? nope, im just playing a game and ill take any advantage to beat my enemys who zerg us every single time, so yea id scam them no problem to make them quit/break up/other

Anyone who wouldnt is a non-factor and will never achieve anything big in the game :>
No surprise that you favor and endorse scamming.
wanting/making ppl quit is a [censored] move imo
theres crazy scams out there,i knew 1 guy on gustin who made over 1billion from scamming
Unless Ferst has some unknown powers of mind control, no one can MAKE you quit just like no one can MAKE you, for example, put your gear in a trade window to someone else and click ok.

WANTING them to quit may be jerky, a person can want you to quit/steal your gear all they want, it doesn't make it happen unless you allow it.
All manner of poor and misanthropic behavior can be rationalized.

Doesn't change what the behavior is, and the type of person who engages in it.
no you can't make someone quit but you can easily make an individual toon worthless if you focus on it
I don't know. You can send me trade invites all day long and I still won't hand over my gear.
Yeah. There is a difference between enjoying pvp and the risk/reward, cause/consequence aspect of it, but getting off from the thought that you're making people quit is a whole different realm of mentality, and the only thing I can think of saying to people like that is kindly find something else to vent your bitterness on than in online games. I'll never understand why it would feel good to make people quit.

I've said it before, and I would be all for scamming IF it involved risk and consequence. Currently it does not, considering how you can make an anonymous alt which nobody has any means whatsoever to find out who you are.

Never been scammed myself. I get the name scam or people spamming trades with me about once every two weeks when I'm in mdt trading gear between clannies. I see the "dude1: WTB X item, 10 mill", "dude2: WTS X item, 8 mill" scam pretty frequently, and it's always amusing pretending you have such an item already and wanting to sell it to the buyer. Their response is always different and quite colorful at times.
Just a couple days ago I had a guy trying to sell me 13 C-crystals as a stage 13 green SA. When I closed the trade he started saying in shouts how Tarun is a scammer, everyone beware. Not quite sure why he retorted to that..

One of my older clannies and his wife both played L2, and on several occasions they had people pretending to be his wife on an alt wanting to try on gear. Nice try. Kinda.
I love the ones that tries to scam me with the name of my main char when I am on my alts.

I don't know. You can send me trade invites all day long and I still won't hand over my gear.

not talking about scamming
the guy said he wants to make ppl quit and you can fairly easily do that

the guy said he wants to make ppl quit and you can fairly easily do that

Ok, just for the sake of argument how would one go about that, using in-game methods that aren't scams?

I wouldnt. Am I a nonfactor?
Believe me or not, but there are many other ways how to be factor/succesful/achieve stuff without beeing a d.ck to others without trying to ruin others. This game is about fun (like all games) if you consider fun ruining others' fun...no comment i guess.
Actually the scam most of us can easily fall is putting the quantity to appear as a price. It is easy not to notice it if you are in hurry. But most of the scammers are pretty stupid. On Teon someone called SirShorty was selling a brig helmet for the half of the catalog price - which means about 10 times less then the market price. Everyone will become suspisious which such price. But put the price about half of the market price and tons of ppl will jump at the possibility to make quick bucks.
Eh, selling for _under_ the market price is not scamming.

Eh, selling for _under_ the market price is not scamming.

I guess this is a joke.
You don't really think that someone will shout "Selling Homunculus sword (acumen) for 40,000a" and this is not going to be a scam, right?
It can be a typo OR someone just having fun at your expense. And yes, it is not a scam unless he is selling you something else than a homu. Even if he sold it to you at 7mil, it would still not be a scam, it would be ripping off then.

You've been here for a very little time, so I'll tell you something funny about L2 economy. People REGULARLY sell items under the market price. Sometimes even under the craft price. They're in a hurry or dont happen to know the price of the moment. Or they mispriced the item. It happens all the time. Calling someone a scammer because they were selling an item for less than the market price is foolish, ignorant and trying to tarnish the name of another player.

Did you even see the item or are you basing your accusation on something that was in shout? I know for a fact that he had a Brig helm which he _bought_ at under the market price and resold for fast money again at _under_ the market price.

I've bought mats from him for about 80mil, under the market price. I do know him. He has no need to scam with a Brig helm, lol.
Sure. Whatever.
Great response! So, no proof, no nothing, just calling someone a scammer. What a charming chap you are.

Come to me dude! I'll sell you homunculus with acumen for 40k!
What? I sold you an apprentice sword instead of homunculus? Just a joke, dude! No bad feelings, right? And this is not of scam. I did not intended to scam you! I told you this just a joke!
You must really be mentally challenged.
Handel, how the hell is selling an item under market price a scam? *Mind boggles* I guess that makes me a scammer to because I sold my Bellion way back below market price since A: Fists were to hard sell B: Wanted money fast.

Also like pointed out but ignored by you, misspricing can happen. So your shout might state a higher price, but because you forgot a zero, your shop is actually cheaper <.<

From what you say, he was selling the item he said he was selling. I would understand if it was the quantity/price scam, but it was just fast selling. Which makes me wonder, why the slander on someone?

I thouth I wrote it in english but maybe something happened with my keyboard and instead in english I wrote it in arabian or some other language.
So the scam for me is:
SirShorty cries: WTS homu sword with acumen cheap.
I ask: how much?
SirShorty says: 40k. You come to buy it? (the price of such sword is several kk, not 40k. Even if you sell it in the official shop you will get much more).
I ask: Why so cheap?
SirShorty: ...silence...
For Charmille the guy is simply a joker. For you is some person which is just happy to sell things below the market price.
Well, for me, being noob and such, and not having your knowledge about the human psychology and the jokes, I simply say "Beware of SirShorty. It is a scammer"
Handel, I'm ardently anti-scammer. That said, what you described doesn't qualify as a scam unless you get quoted a price for an item and some bait & switch happens... and if you don't recognize an Apprentice Sword as not being a Homunkulus.... can't really pity you.

YOU PITY ME BECAUSE I DIDN'T FALL A VICTIM OF A SCAMMER?
And you call yourself "anti-scammer". God save us from such "anti-scammers".
Heh wow now that's not gonna win you any friends o.O I read what you said more than once and there was no scam there YET. Selling a homu for 40k isn't a scam, now if you went to his shop/traded and it turned out to be some other sword, THEN that would be a scam.

I'm with EllieBelly on this one.

I have found and bought full unsealed majestic jewerly set all +3 for 20m when the normal marked price is 50m+...does that make the char that I bought it from a scammer?

Or players that forget to click on the package sell button and sells armor worth several milion adena for 1a...are they scammers?

And 40k adena isn't much anyways...even if it was an artisan sword or mid no grade you would had earned adena by buying it for 40k (sell no grade weapon to NPC, d grade make crystals and shots).

btw...Apprentice Sword isn't tradable...

What I count as scammers are the ones that are shouting "WTS 22nd buff book 40m" and are sitting with the 21st buff book that you can buy from the NPC for 400k.

Heck even I managed to sell an a grade weapon for 4m instead of 40m because I was in a hurry and managed to miss a 0 when I setup the shop...does that make me a scammer?
Rohhirim:
As I wrote (and I am sure this ime I wrote in english) there was no shop set. The guy was shotoung a price which was 100 tiems less then the market prices and 5 times less the price he could get in the official shop.
In your exmaple above you bought someting for 20kk when it value was 50kk or you bought it 2.5 less then the market value. But what would you think is someone says to you:
Hey, lets trade! I will sell things valued at 50kk only for 500k - 100 times cheaper! Come here quickly and trade with me!
I understand someone wrote this is not a scam. Ok, it is not a scam. Agreed. Next time SirShorty makes such offer I will pm you to go and buy it.
PS. Don't sell me the bullsh*t it is not a scam because no real sale was made. As Charmille said yealier in the same thread the scam is when someone shouts "WTB XXX for 10kk" and someone shouts "WTS XXX for 5kk". So there was no real sale made too but nevertheless it is a scam too.

As Charmille said yealier in the same thread the scam is when someone shouts "WTB XXX for 10kk" and someone shouts "WTS XXX for 5kk". So there was no real sale made too but nevertheless it is a scam too.

That scam is an old trick. They trick you in buying the item for 5kk (originaly maybe worth 10k) so that you can sell it to the other person for 10kk and make 5kk that logs of at the same moment you have bought it.

I have seen shouts likt the ones you have described and most of them wasn't a scam. I have seen shouts that said "the one that PM me first get a top d weapon" and what do you know I got myself a brand new top d weapon that I can sell for 3-4kk.
And how many times did you get top D weapons from such shouts for 30k?
Handel let me offer you 2 bits of advice:

1) READ what other people type to you (Or LISTEN to what others say to you) before you attempt a reply.

2) Once you feel ready to make your reply, shut up for about 10 seconds, and re-think what you are saying. If after rethinking, you still wish to make your reply, that's on you. But stopping for a moment to allow the minute possibility of common sense to rescue you from yourself might go along way.

You weren't scammed. You are an angry angry little person and are using incorrect labels to repay what your skewed perspective considers some grievous wrong done unto you. Most of us recognize it for what it is.
This is my opinion. You either accept it and keep your eyes open when you deal with the toon I wrote or ither you don't accept it. In both cases this dosn't mean I am here for flaming.

Next time SirShorty makes such offer I will pm you to go and buy it.

Sure tell me the server you are on and I will create a lvl 1 toon (if I don't have a char there) and take a look...
That'd be Teon. And SirShorty doesnt need to scam for 2 reasons:

1. He can make more money in the time it takes to get a scam done by spoiling and manoring.

2. He can ask me to sponsor the items he is needing if he does not have enough money already.

Obviously, your English isnt up to the task of understanding what has been really said. If you think that the example of that old shout scam fits this situation in any way, you're WAY off the charts.

So, by what name do you go on Teon?

Now I understand why is this flaming. It is hard to read something bad about a person we think we know.
As I said this is my personal opinion. I am newbie on Teon (was on the private servers before) and it is not hard to understand how someone will be honest to the old guns and try to scam the newbies.
But as I said this is my opinion and I must not be flamed because of my own opinion.
PS - can you sponsor me too? I am short of 13kk for my new armor.
I sponsor only people with a brain, sorry.

I sponsor only people with a brain, sorry.

I see. And I know what "brain" means :D

Edit: Just 13kk? For teleport?

Go grind for it like the rest of us

Disappointed... You don't even have a sense of humor...
Brain means just that, brain. You've shown great lack of them so far so yeah, no way in hell I'd sponsor one like you.

Boring...
You write too correct. Where are you from?
Can't you even read Handel? It says pretty clearly under Charmille's avatar that he is from Finland. And what the hell? First you said SirShorty was selling a brigandine helmet for under the market value, but suddenly it was a homu?? I want some of what you're smoking. Now be a good sport and tell us your name on Teon :)

I already finished with this.
But to explain - the homu was just an example. Because someoen else gave an example how ge bought plate armor 2 times cheaper then the market value.
As for Finland under the avatar - sorry, I really didn't saw it. I just noticed most of the ppl here me including are often making grammar mistakes unlike Charmille. That's why I wondered if english is her native language.
Well, I'm having a scam shop in Aden too now. Selling DC gloves 2m under market price!
Maybe you should stop flaming, riduculing and insulting me at last. As I said it is my personal opinion and I believe it is true.
Well, you are wrong. The person in question is my clan member and I know for a fact he is not a scammer, any more than I am. OMG someone bought the DC gloves, I scammed myself for 2m adena :( You flame my clannie, I flame you till the end of the world.

Maybe you should stop flaming, riduculing and insulting me at last. As I said it is my personal opinion and I believe it is true.

Next time you beleave someone is scamming like that, play with him until he shows you what he is actualy selling.

Would you flag me as a scammer if I said "WTS Top D weapon 1m" without even looking if it's true or not?
Hey Handel. Welcome to official.

Well, I read all your posts and the replies. I don't want to shout at you or flame you, and I am not writing this just to join "the team" against you. :p

But I do believe you got things wrong, and there was no proof of a scam in the story you mentioned.

As Charmille said, shouts can have typo mistakes, or people do get in a hurry to sell, and get frustrated with the l2 market system, so they UNDER-sell.

On another note, hey, I love Handel's music! Viva The Messiah!!! :)

This is the first sensible answer after so much answers which show they didn't even read what I wrote. I am starting to doubt myself too although I thought over the whole situation several times and don't see how this may be a typo. Now I really regret I didn't answer "yes, I'll buy it" to check the things to the end instead of asking "Why that cheap?" after which I was ignored...
On the other hand it is easy to make an anon char which to handle the scams so it is really hard to believe a known name will try to make scams... Actually this is the main reason I started to doubt.
GGSHOP on Teon.
Sells stem as draconic bow shaft and leather helmet as BW helmet.
This thread is not meant for posting about scammer shops. This thread is about posting different ways of scamming and both of those have been adressed already.

And if you're gonna post every scam shop in Giran, you better be prepared to make one hella long post ^^
also if you are posting specific scams for a particular server please post in your server section.
And if there are any new scams I'll ask Alyra to update it on the main thread. But just about everything falls under one category or another, we don't need examples of every single switch-a-roo scam for instance.
Ok, sorry:-)
I read many, but not all pages of this, and didn't see it. Pardon if it's a dup.

Two acquaintances in game fell prey to a version of this.

V.1
Basically you're befriended by someone "trustworthy" who has a nice buffer character, except its gear is crummy (like ng + dg on an A-grade toon). But hey, since you're a nice guy, I'd be happy to loan you the account for a while so you can level up.
A week or so after the account loan, the mark has purchased gear for it, the account is reclaimed and stripped.

V.2
You buy PLing on an account, get it back and equip the character. Then somehow the password gets reset by the PLer (who denied it naturally). The case I'm familiar with, it took a few weeks to get NCSoft to get the account back to its original owner again. Of course at that point it was totally naked.

In both V.1 and V.2 cases the players quit game. Obviously they couldn't get help from NCSoft cuz of course they themselves had broken the rules, too.
Both cases involved fairly high up people on the server who pulled the scam (one's main was a hero for a couple of months).

Take home message: if you buy*/borrow/PL an account, don't put any gear on it that you hope to keep. If it's a buffbot, just put a devotion set.

*read as "rent"
My scam list doesn't include EULA violations, which both of those are.

This is about in game scams also, not out of game.
Play legit, be safe.
I found several times well made scams with package sales which have serious chance for success.
For example the tittle of the shop says "Blue Wolf Robe set" and there is indeed blue robe stuff... besides the helmet. The idea is you may not check every item but only 2-3 and buy the "set".
The second kind of scam is when you sell something which is little bit expensive and you know it is hard to sell... Then someone asks for the price and then starts to think (wispering his thoughts to you). They are something like this "Hmmm... 23kk... let me see how much money I have... I'll sell something to a friend and will have all the money. I'll buy it from you in the morning if you didn't sold it..."
So you know your stuff is hard to sell at this price and the guy will never come to you again. So you ask what he sells... The problem is he sells something not very usefull and somewhat expensive too and no one will buy his stuff at the asked price. The idea is clear - you make the calcualtion and it is still profitable even if you buy his expensive stuff... The scam is if you buy his stuff he will not buy your afterwards.
Of course this may be for real so you lose potential buyer and even alienate a legit player. So you can request exchange or just answer with a smile. The potential scammer will take the smile as a sign his scheme is revealed.
Well, this may not look like a real classic scam but it is soemthing close to it.
I don't really count "wheeling and dealing" as a scam. I get requests for an item "plus adena" all the time.
Playing the market is not a scam.
If I can make myself a REALLY good deal doesn't mean I am scamming someone.
well....i'd call 'getting something for nothing' a really good deal :p
Scams are a misrepresentation of something.

NG ss listed as A-ss, scam.
Trade me your weapon I give back ok? and not giving back, that is a scam.

Hi I'd like to buy your 50 mill item but I have 40 mill and a rice cake is that ok? That's not a scam.

Someone trying to give you some adena plus some crappy item that will never sell, to buy an item you are selling... if you choose to attempt such a transaction, that's just called being dumb. Just say "no I will only take adena".
There was a very weird scam on Kain a few monthes ago. An elf girl came and started selling D Crystals for cheap, like 570 each , cant remember exactly. Now that was not D Crystals that was the thing that drops in newbie lands when you speak to the first guide.

She had like 2000 of those, hence she made 10 millions out of nowhere, warning people around didn't help.

The weirdness is how could she collect so many of these crystals? If you try with a newbie character it doesnt drop so much.
The blue gem?
Thats new !!
Sure is, the blue gemstone, which is of course labeled, Blue Gemstone, does look exactly like a D crystal.
Yes that was it.. I still can't figure how she got so many of them. A bot at newbie starting spot? I can't believe it. Maybe years of rerolling alts...
Yeah that's what's weird, you only get that stone as a newbie and can't turn it in to the newbie guy or they take it. That would take a lot of full accounts turning in the gem to 1 person to get that many.
Well, you can call "dumb" every victim of a scam although some scam is possible due to the lack of knowledge (the trick with the party and the dropped item).

Recently I had to make 120,000 SSA and it would take hours to make it myself to I went to the private manifactures runing in circle and making SSA at every manifacture with reasonable price... suddenly noticing one of the dwarves rised and a SE started to recharge him then opened the shop again. Nice, but why the stand up? Well, after I went to him I noticed all the prices were the same besides the price of SSA which was 350a and now was 350,000a...
I am just pointing out that people call way, WAY too many things "scams" when they are not. If someone wants to buy your weapon and cannot afford it in pure adena, often times they will try to BARTER existing items they have. Calling that a scam is ridiculous.

Yes it's close to that dumb scam where someone asks you to buy some worthless item for a lot of money to trade for a legit item worth a lot of money. The only difference is in that scam you buy the worthless item then the person doesn't trade you what you wanted.

In the case of selling one thing for adena + items... it's easy. Do a trade of your item and the adena and the item(s) AT THE SAME TIME. Don't purchase what the person wants to sell you without doing the full trade. That's just silly.
If you don't pick up the gem it will keep dropping as you kill mobs. I'm sure they just had a few bots running and set it to not pick up the gem so they just kept falling off the newbie mobs lot of work just to do that but for 10 mill i guess it was worth it all she has to do is pick up the jems with her main and let the lvl 1 to I'm guessing about lvl 6 keep killing for the jems.
9 accounts full of toons at 7 gems a week means 32 weeks (over 6 months) of gem farming to get 2000 crystals. 2000 crystals at 570 means only 1.14m adena.

not profitable. waste of time.

no, i remember actually trying to do that and turning them all in for millions of newbie SS, but i couldnt get more than one to drop. i doubt it changed from interlude when i tried it.
Yes you are right that would be only 1 million.. was that 20,000 gems then? I can't remember sorry.

Ashley is right if you don't pick it you get more than one to drop which is understandable since a newbie can easily miss it. But if you turn it in it stops dropping it might be what you tried to do.
:D
yea don't turn it in or pick it up and it keeps droping, you need an alt to pick them up for it 2 work

Wait a sec were telling people how to scam some one delete this post lol
still, 20 000 gems - when killing 100 of them means getting level 5 - means a TON of farming.
Well you can just put a char 20 levels above you in party and you get no exp and can farm them easily while the other person picks up.

There is no way to teach people how to avoid scams without saying how the scam works. If people want to use this list to learn how to scam, fine. But if everyone knows what the scammer is up to, its not going to work.

True you have a point just funny how were like CSI on the subject now :p
Now that is a very very bad scam. Who would farm keltirs to get 1.5mil ><
Surely there is something behind, maybe they farm it during events, if it happens they drop event items too.
It's not keltirs, it drops from gremlins. I tried it, if you don't pick up the first one more drop, but not every mob, maybe like 30% of the time. So that's a whole lot of effort to make 1 mill.
Not every dubious trade can be classified as pure scam, but nevertheless it remains at least "dubious". Right now I saw a package sale for "Divine set" - and there really was divine set. But coupled of it were a pair of crimson boots at the price of 500k. Well, you don't really need "divine" boots for the set to work but this way the seller was trying to sell [censored] boots on more then double price (you can get chain boots for about 200k from the luxory shop)
Well they are the "unofficial" matching boots for Divine :)
I've sold crimson boots for way more than 500k btw. They sold quickly too.

Well they are the "unofficial" matching boots for Divine :)

elven robes of mine once upon a midnight dreary, sold for a whopping 2m.
Some people need to loosen up a bit. Divine gloves, robes and stockings is the set bonus SET. Crimson boots are generally accepted to complete the "set" meaning the look. If the gloves were really gloves of blessing someone pulled out of thin air, that would be a scam. But matching boots? Come on now.
I accept you are correct. The reason of my reaction is the p.defence is the p.defence and that's why I never cared about the look of the boots if they are not in a set. For those 500k you can buy boots with better defence and no one will care what kind of boots you are wearing with the divine robe. But you will care when how much damage you take when hit.
Heh. I get teased for wearing a knight shield to match my majestic armor, your pdef talk means nothing to us fashion hounds XD
Great work Elly, sticky?
I don't know if this was mentioned already because, I'll be honest, I didn't read through all 23 pages of posts - but I keep seeing this scam pop up.

Augmentation crystals. I've seen a couple shops have their title say "Blue14" or whatever, but when you look, they have a regular Blue Crystal, not leveled at all, selling it for 100s of millions.
Heh, nice. Or not.. whatever.
That one isn't listed specifically but it's lumped in with all the other "looks like" scams. Stems looking like bow shafts, NG ss/sps looking like [censored]/asps, those newbie gems looking like D crystals, and so on and so forth.

lol anyone that needs a blue 14 and get scammed like that deserves it.
Another scam is when people try to pass of buff bottles as Bottle of [Raid Boss] Soul.

I know with a large amount of money you wouldn't fall for it, but I would be careful.
