I have been in a clan for over a year now and have notice that some people for what ever reason are better at being a clan member than other... in this thread I would like to see what other peoples advice is to being a clan member.
some that come to mind:
1. don't leave in the middle of siege just because you are getting killed.
2. don't be silent in clan chat say something anyting
3. Help your clan members out quest, parties, what armor to use etc
4. most important thing is listen to you clan leader (note I am not a clan leader ).
5. if you see some one not leveling for oh lets say 4 mths and they are at level 4. Don't flame them in front of the clan, use wishper maybe they need help
I am just interested to see what others people advice is to being a good clan member
- Don't log on every hour, ask if the leader is online, find they aren't and log off. Repeat continually.
- Constantly beg for gear.
- Get mad at something stupid, drop clan, then beg to come back. Repeat.
- If you have problems with another clan member, deal with it like an adult or, at the very least, talk to the clan leader. Don't whine to everyone else about how much you hate that person.
- If you know a member is cheating, talk to the clan leader directly and quietly.
- Don't be an *** to other people and expect your clan to back you up every time.
- Have fun and help the other members to have fun as well!
I come from the perspective of the clan officer, but not leader.
Some other things that help to make a GOOD clan member:
1) Patience. Your item, your answer, your party, your rez may take some time to get to you. As an individual, you may be able to maintain a pace that far surpasses your mates'. Good for you. But when looking to be a part of a greater whole, you must appreciate and anticipate delays, extenuating circumstances, detours and general pace differences. Relax a little and enjoy the friendships.
2) Be a team player. The clan wasn't built and developed with the purpose of finding and then supporting you, even if you are the best L2 player in the universe and every clan in your server (plus the two adjacent servers) are tripping over themselves to get you to join them. As a clan member you "supposedly" swear an oath of fealty to the lord of that clan. IF you are joining that clan because you want to be a part of it (not because you are a spy, a scammer or a griefer), then be a part of it. Do your part and put the clan needs above your own. If you don't and everyone else is like you, it's not really much of a clan, now is it?
3) Learn about your clan. What are its goals, why does it have the rules it has, the friendships etc. This will help you to be sure to intuitively advance that clan's objectives... or determine if that clan isn't for you. It also helps you prevent doing things that could hinder your clan's goals.
4) Don't take things personally. Not every decision made is a reflection of the leader's or clan's like of you as a person or your suggestions. The people charged with the success of a clan have many considerations to make. Your priorities may be completely different from the clan leader's priorities. That doesn't place you on opposite teams.
5) Be active. Not just active in game, but be an active friend to your mates, be an active participant in events and discussions. If you aren't ever heard from, no one will be able to consider your needs or ideas. Enough of not having your needs addressed or ideas given consideration and people tend to want to leave... but if you don't make the effort to share them, how is the clan supposed to know? Take part and be a part.
6) Advance the ideals of your clan. Why did you join the clan in the first place? If it wasn't to leech levels and gear then run... then you should have chosen a clan whose playstyle or codes match yours. Embrace the ideals set forth by the leadership and carry them out. - Join a roleplaying clan? Roleplay! No need to be an annoyance to non RPers, but a little mild roleplay never hurt if you are in an RP clan. Is your clan a PK/Griefer clan? Then spread your chaos and don't get upset or defensive when you pay the "copnsequences" of your and your clan's "crimes." Enjoy the mayhem and thrill. If your clan is like ours, then spread good will, sportsmanship and honor. Take that ideal and make it your own (at least in the game). Don't do things that are contradictory to your clan's goals or "style."
And of course, be respectful to the fact that your clanmates may be from other countries, religions, orientations, genders, races, political leanings and sensitivities.
$player1: playerX from clanA just called me a noob. lol
/use deathspike
incorrect target
$Me: I killed him... let our leader worry about the politics.
$player1: huh?
"deadplayerz: you are sooo kos.
yeah... leaders don't like when u do what you want and then tell them to deal with the politics. :)
Good ideas everyone. Let me just add one more thing:
For god's sake, let the clan leader play once in a while. I know back when I was in Skynet, poor Skyday rarely got opportunities to just play and level with the rest of us. Constant bombardments from clannies needing things from the CWH or whatever. They deserve to play and need EXP, too. Don't forget there's a person behind the leader's toon that likes to play the game.

It only gets worse if your clan is a castle holder.
The Manor system doesnt allow for actual playing of the game.
So yeah - LEt your clan leader play every now and then +1

Learned NOT to be a leader back in AC. It's just too much hassle.
Agreed SirE.
That's a lot of the reason why many duties of the clan are delegated to my wife and I.
Heck just being an officer, I already know that the first 40 minuites to an hour that I log on are going to be a flurry of PMs, mails, messenger chats, clan and alliance issues, etc. My porr wife has it even worse.
But that is a part of the sacrifice WE make so that there is (imho) a good clan for the members to enjoy. So long as the members appreciate that, it makes it all worth while.
Unfortunately, not all members of every (any?) clan employ the "guidelines" established in this thread.
The biggest thing I can add, is that once you join a clan, you'll find out very quickly if your "game morals" are the same as thiers. If you find out they have different morals than you, and you do not wish to change your morals, feel free to walk.
I joined a clan with an alt, and within 5 minutes I was asked to join a group, that was cool, I went down into a catacomb and was put into group, I found them, only to find out it was 6 bots and a couple people sitting in a hallway getting PL'd. I dropped group and clan and PK'd the 2 getting PL'd. My alts stay clanless.
If you are the healer or a tank in a clan group, please avoid getting drunk as a skunk. I do not feel the need to pay for your idiocy with my XP, Gear, and time.
Amen, Canto. I was in a clan once where the clan leader and a few of his close buddies would gather in rl and play and get smashed drunk. They would insist that other (lower) clan members join them in raids/parties (like Orfan) which held no possibility of success.
I guess its OK if you want to get yourself killed, but don't kill your friends who are trying to help you at the same time. The CL lord was playing drunk once when we had two clan parties assisting each other deep in a Necro at the max edge of our abilities. He got upset at some chance comment and hit the soe, leaving everyone confused and in dire danger.
The poor fellow still has the remnants of his once large clan, and I think that he blames everyone else for his clan's problems, never giving a thought to his own behaviors.
Yes, I left long ago and found a clan lord who I can respect.
I could never understand why so many players choose to play drunk or stoned (though I suspect many recognize that they simply are [censored] and try to excuse it by claiming intoxication).
I can also not understand why anyone would accept a leader who was that immature, selfless and inept. Good for you RumPunch, moving on to a better place.
This is a discussion about how to be a good member, but in order to be a good member, your first step should be to find a good leader.
I had once a big clan and was in 2 big allys but im glad i dont have to care for anyone anymore.
You put in to much time and effort in your clan and ur clanmates and it just dont pays.
I mean i helped em a lot with some adena, materials, knowlege and showed em how to earn cash and when they hit higher lvls ( like 52+ ) they leave. Yeah thanks.
I can accept if someone leaves for the reason he plays more and outlvl all other members, if he quits game or is in a different time zone so we cant play much together.
Sure my clan has the problem of to less healers/buffers then again only 1-2 out of 30 members tryed help me to change that.
Ppl complain about onlinetimes they see to less ppl online.
Yeah guess what ppl have jobs and cant play the whole day.
I think if you play 4 hours a day is a lot when u have a job and a RL.
Ppl complain about i did not help them.
Yeah if someone acts wrong and get trouble because of it why it should be my problem at all ? I had serverall issues and spend hours talking with ppl i dont even know just because a member did act wrong and did not listen and even help me with his issue.
Or even better begging for equip or adena.
Yeah as clanleader i find millions on the ground to outfit everyone i only have to pick up the money. More worse new ppl just ask after 2 mins can u buy me this or that.
I dont like take taxes in any form so i never took taxes.
I told the ppl how to get there equip with working for it plus i helped em with a lot advise, farming or loaning equip.
Guess what most ppl are just to lasy to earn stuff. Even to come to raids and get a good share later.
Yeah they leave because some other richer clan can outfit em right away so they can just faster lvl.
Some do also complain the EXP is bad because you farm for materials some clanmember needs.
There where only a few ppl i met so far that did not act this way and thease you should get into your clan.
As for me i enjoy my careless life now.
Who knows what devil did ride me to become a clanleader..... tss

I've often played drunk but I never involve others in my shenanigans. I've never grouped or anything like that while hammered. I have been known to seriously (and very embarrassingly) misstell... :o
I've played drunk a few times too, it's not that dangerous unless you're totally wasted and cant tell left from right :P PVP while you're drunk is funny, same for sieges ^^ (Playing a straightforward melee class helps a bit, especially in sieges where it's RUSH RUSH RUSH. Die. Rince and repeat.)
Good members are people who you can chat with to make the long hours of grinding pass faster. People that you can talk with about RL stuff and generally have a nice discussion. Patience is also a virtue, and those that are patient and helpfull are imho the best ones. Being a leader or a co-leader aint dancing on the roses and sometimes good members make a big difference in situations that are making you ****** as a leader.
Personally, I've found it a good way to use a minimum age for recruiting new members since past experience with young players showed that they were more often than not selfish, hotheaded, impatient and lacking in many other ways. There is nothing worse than a clanny whining every 15mins in clan chat about not having some item and then begging in clan chat for materials over and over >.< Especially when it's for crafting an item he cant even use yet.
I've been playing for just over a month, i've only been in 1 clan so far but it went down cause the leader had to leave for sertian reasons. Anyways, i don't think it's hard for anyone to be a good member in a clan. I didn't ask the leader for any equipment or anything but he asked if i had anything better to use and i didn't so he gave me some stuff that was better without me asking which was nice.
There was lots in the clan..about 30 but besides the leader it didn't seem like much were helping others out. Even though i was newer to the game i still help people that were lower levled then me. or higher leveled if i could.
Another thing i've notice or so it seems. Is that some of the clan leaders or people that can let you in a clan will just yell out that there recruiting and all but for some of them they seem to just want to grab ya and throw ya in the clan without telling you about the clan or the clans..umm goals/guidlines i guess and what kind of a clan they are but they should tell newer people about it a bit more then what some of them do. (not saying all clans are like that but i know some are and i know there are still lots of great clans out there for me to find :D)
Being a clan leader for a long time is if your clan leader wants to be left alone or solo let him dont bug him to party or etc.
I like soloing i group from time to time i just like soloing turning off all chat and zoning out to get away from it all. If your an established clan you should be able to let the clan leader have his alone time nothing stresses a clan leader more then getting so agitated they just dont want to do anything and just set up shop or logged out because they cant xp cant craft or anything without being interuppted.
Be mindful to your clan leader's personal space no one likes to be hounded everytime they are on 24/7.

Oh but they do if they're smart enough to have co-leaders. It's not like 1 person should do all the things for the clan, you can divide responsibilities you know ;)
I have always been a good clanmember (or at least I hope I have) I am on often enough (1-3hours a day), and I regularly chat with clannies, donate mats/quest items to clannies. My l2 life does not really revolve around hunting, but rather, my clan.
Lately however, our clan has dwindled to miniscule numbers, our clan leader is not on as much as he used to. He is often playing the market making money (not that there is anything wrong with that) but he plays an SH alt in another clan, which tells me he is not intrested in "leading" anymore. I will often log in to an empty clan. It really bugs me not to see any of my friends on at all.
However, through this clan, I have gained help with B grade parts needed for my weapon/armor (75% was farmed by me, the rest clan helped/gave) so I still feel like i owe my current clan, which I am not happy with at the moment.
I am not sure what to do. I am looking into other clans in the moment to truly see if the grass is greener on the other side.

Leave the clan. If you have friends in the clan, try to get them to come with you to a new clan. Clans should be fun and active. Seriously... leave the clan.
We've chatted. The grass being greener.... it's always a matter of personal taste and perception. The perfect clan is the one you make. It has the rules the way you want them to be. It stands for what you want it to stand for. Its motives and goals match yours. Its success depends on your efforts and its failures ultimately boil down to your decisions (even if by proxy due to a member you allowed in, or by a member allowed in by someone you authorized to invite, etc etc).
Aside from making your own clan... (something that enough players are not willing or able to do that helps support my stance against clan ownership transfers) finding the "right" clan for you is going to involve some compromise on your behalf.
Now, there is nothing at all wrong with checking out the options. It's like buying a car. Your take on clans is the same as mine, and you will put your all into it, take on a loyalty to that clan and a sincere desire to see it succeed. So for you to invest that much of yourself, you want to be sure you choose the right clan for you.
But right does not equal perfect.
As for your current situation. You know our rules. We don't allow a member at any level to join us if they have an alt in another clan. It is a clear conflict of interest. Any time spent on the alt is a clear choice of the other clan over ours. We don't need fair-weather members, or part-time loyalists.
How can anyone possibly feel that a clan leader is dedicated to the success and well being of his clan and membership if he has an alt wearing someone else's tag?
I'm sorry and I mean no disrespect, but how can someone ask you to put your all into HIS clan when he's not doing it himself? (or herself... no gender bias here)

Ditto. That's what I did.
I wish *cue harp music, Sovrath* I wish that there was a feature for clans where you can join on as probationary status. Let's say for 14 days or something. During that time, if you left, you wouldn't be penalized by not being able to join another clan. Also, the clan could dump you with no penalty as well. This would make it easier to "test drive" clans. *Okay, Sov, stop playing*
We employ a sub-clan system whereby new recruits are added to the Sub. Rules on the subclan members are slightly relaxed (no dues for example) but then again they don't have access to the clan hall.
They get to test drive the clan, the clan gets to test drive the member.
It doesn't solve the issue of the 5 day penalty... and that hurts because when members "ascend" they have a 5 day clanless waiting period... but it is a no-lose situation for both parties.

only about 4-5 active people in the clan (10 are inactive)
Clan Leader is hardly a leader at all (very nice guy tho!)
I wanna Kill Raid bosses!!! (+++ July event!)
The only reason i didnt make a clan is that its too much hassle to bear.Let some other guy do the work and you enjoy the game (ofcourse he gets to be the guy whos name is inscribed everywhere).
My clan (we were 24-23 left) has left to go play another MMO.Now they DID give me homu and karmian set. So i returned karmian and bought my own demon set when i could afford. But giving 7m for a homu is not posible fo me right now.
So i decided to try and get a SoM and then buy a homu (after all a SoM is 70m---so i got 20m left to get) to return to the clan. But in the meantime im stuck in that clan since they dont log and i must put the homu inside the CWH.
And having a clan tag has it benefits :p
Its better to stay in clan and solo (if you cant party anymore) till you return everything you got-and AFTER that leave (there is nothing i hate more than thiefs<.<)
Oh btw 10 chars are in the clan but inactive for 3 months now (thats why i have CWH and a clan duh)
those are all outstanding guidelines and by-laws. thank you all for thinking this all out so well. as for myself, i have been a clan member and am now a clan leader, as well as in a certain postion of having an outstanding array of friends in an equally outstanding array of clans. I am a crafter in my own clan of one. but i buy and trade with everyone. therefore, folks can unload their mats and old gear to me as they trade up to their new gear. this is helpful to my friends they get to empty their warehouse spaces and get new gear. and helpful to me, i get a large assortment of folks, regular and occasional, to supply me with the items i need to keep going. my major drawback there, is that i had to clan up all my alts just so i'd have enough warehouse space to store the gear and books.
and one time i had invited others into a clan.. and allowed them to invite members. this did not turn out well. it turned out that one of the newer group had joined just to go out and pk other players (the 1st and only unbreakable rule i had posted). he started an incident, the dead played got majorly indignant - offered blackmail terms for restitution, or he'd continue to kill all clanmembers on sight. as soon as i found out (relatively quickly), i sent an email to all clanmember explaining the situation, and then kick everyone out. and put that clan in retirement for a while. it cost to much to just dissolve a level 3 clan. but that was for the protection of the innocent clanmembers, they did not deserve to be pk'd every time they stepped out of town. i did not pay the blackmail-restitution. but that was someone who had joined with the express intention of provoking such reactions. so, now only i, as leader, will invite members. and then only after i have worked with them for a while. but, that is slightly less off-topic than some of the other posts here.
being a good member is supporting other clan members and friends (with the hopes that they may be impressd enough to ask to join). support takes many forms - information and assistance in many different situations.
I like to consider myself a good clan member. I'm very active, I play everyday. I was promoted to co leader in my last clan. I would take lower levels out hunting and always be available for prearranged clan hunts, or parties with my clannies. I'd share my equipment out, and I'd always keep clan chat busy. If people needed buffs or a rez I'd log onto my lowbie EO and find them if they asked.
I'd contribute to the CWH with mats and other gear, and I wouldn't presume to ask for help. A good clan should volunteer help to its clannies.
Indeed a lot of nice guidelines to what is a 'Good' member.
From personal experience I would add not to be the XP grinder when the clan has an out hunt with new recrutes that are lower just to give them the feel of how the clan interacts, how we move inhunt and what we are like as people. I have often heard a full assest member of the clan go frenzic over the fact he ain't getting good XP because the lower ranking newcomer (s) is causing a penalty. I trully hate it when that happens and the words are said out loud in the channel where the newby can read it. It trully doesn't give an attitude of 'welcome' and honestly do these members think that a leader of 50+ is getting any good XP in a group where every member is about 20 levels lower then his own?
In Wolveneye I make it my business that new players can have a try at what it feel slike to be part of a clan, by letting them join in a random hunt or party. I'll even help them in leveling and even if they don't decide to join in on my clan, I stay at their disposal for any help they may need. I know how hard it was to level and grind back in the days of open beta and how hard it can be to get the hand of certain aspets in this game. Therefore I espect the exact same care of any member of my clan.
Besides the XP remark, the fact I've most problems with is the 'Listen to your leader' part :s As I'm a sorceress as main and Leader, people tent to consider that I have not what it takes to be a good leader or am unaware of what good fighting tactics are...Fact remains...I often have a bigger view on the whole as I consider every single palyer in my clan or party in his/her respective pro's and con's and thereby create the strategy of attack.
Back when the Fenris clan was still alive, I had a very good relation with the leader ChupaChups and their clan philosophy was the same as mine and they organised hunts in the same way. I even got the thumbs up from Chupa about leading one of the hunts and the approach...So basically a good member should NEVER think that just because the leader's char seems a weaker toon then theirs in open combat, that they are inept in seeing the big picture ;)
And I agree that one needs to be able to help each other out and not think that just because you join a clan They OWE you the mats/items/weapons etc. For your development. They are players who started from scratch as well and if you want to respect them you need to know it's not for granted but needs your imput as well as the one of the leader. It's a mutual giving/taking and formost a thing of confidence and friendship.
A good clan member is part of the whole and keeps his eye not just on his own needs, but on those of the rest of the pack as well. It's a unity build upon good friendship, trust and loyalty to the believes of the group. He/she who joins a clan must be aware that he/she becomes part of a whole and should be 100% behind the clan's philosophy and rules and to represent it in a honorable fashion.
I'm only a danger to myself. One night, I couldn't even figure out how to get out of Dion...
once i went to DVC with a drunk SE who was a good friend. i had VR so he wasnt doing much healing and i didnt notice when he passed out at the keyboard. i got pz, and shouted in chat to him for 2 minutes while i waited for it to wear off. kids, dont drink and play.
PS:
3. Try to participate in events. Clan Lords spend half there game time working for you( if there a good clan lord).
4. Try to participate more , clan lords spend half there real life days trying to make there clan happy.(ie creating websites, how many clan lords have a little notebook of strategies recipies notes dreams plans etc?)
5. Most decent clans are player driven, meaning the players decide the strength and weakness of a clan.
6. Help recruit, the hardest part about being a clan lord, or being in a clan is the need to find active players. Its also a pain in the *** to recruit, and hard on the other Clannies who are pulling out there hair trying to find good players.
7. Theres no such thing as an inactive clan......it means you are not participating with the above, granted some clans are more active then others, or there is something wrong with the clans structure thats causing players not to log on.
8. Be patient with #7. not everyone can be on all the time.
9. Be trustworthy to at least two clan mates. if you cant do that, then leave the clan. if you can.....stay.
10. When in doubt, ask someone whats going on. email them in game. pm them
11. Last make sure the clan you join is what you want. if you want to pvp then make sure you ask what the rules about it are. if you want to be a part of a greiving clan , dont join a carebear clan. if you want to seige, make sure you state that. theres so many aspects of this game, most clans only do 1 or 2 out of 4 things
A.PVP
B.Raid
C.Social
D.Craft
They may do a mix of these things but grinding and 1 or two of these will be a clans true intentive play style.(what they really want to be doing)
I hope this answers your question
my advice to people
1. follow your own heart
2.if you dont like it in the clan just quit without saying a thing
3.dont give ANYTHING just dont expect something in return
4.you not a dog when leader say jump you press ->quit<-
5.if you dont agreed to something just say so dont kill your heart
6.if people gives you a hard time do the same or quit
7.help first your self before a other :)
8.when you get demands just dont do it
9.when it blows north go north dont go south
10.when you dont like war or siedge just dont show up
11.you play the game SO play your game
that whas about it my friendly advice i can give anyone
Guidelines like these are especially important now that the clan-orientated mods of C5 have come.
Newbies to clans, read and Respect the sort of things above. Also those in the academy, or going into the academy... yeah we're helping you out, give us something back please! There is one academy member in a clan I'm part of who has not been active since gettin his armour.
We can't do anything about it.
The hardest thing for building a clan is not, in my opinion, being the leader. If you didn't want that, you should not have put youself in the position. The worst bit is actually filling the ranks with good, decent and strong members, willing to abide by what you say.
Earning respect is harder than keeping it, and losing it is easier than anything else. Just a warning if you start your own.
You need a good throttling.
I'm only a danger to myself. One night, I couldn't even figure out how to get out of Dion...
Is it just me who struggles with this while sober? At least in Giran if not Dion.
Nah, forum browsing and in-game drunkeness is a blast, imo. Some of the funniest replays, and general moments, have occurred when I'm 'on form'.
As long as people don't get hurt or abused, it's all in good fun. I don't drink things that make me violent or hateful lol. When I've had a few glasses of somethin warming, my wit is sharper than a knife blade. Or a few bleary knife blades, depending on the volume consumed :P
But back on topic, where I was a little more serious; clans are not only great fun, but an important in-game part of the L2 community, and as such are usually treated with a degree of respect.
Forgot my point. Speakin of writing while intoxicated (LOL)
To be a good clannie:
1) Don't get mad when RL comes between L2 and another clan member, the worst is being scolded by your clan because you missed a seige for your neices B-day... >.<
2)Don't be too trusting, especially of clannies that are new or low enough lvl to scam you and reroll.
3)If they buy you academy armor, put mats you find in CWH... just a nice thing to do.
4)Put RL before L2 and your clan, don't skip a hot date to seige Gludio Castle.
5)If you agree to a seige, then find out you have a relatives b-day party (see above) tell your clan, if they yell at you, you're not a bad clannie. If you don't say anything... you should've.
my advice to people
1. follow your own heart
11 quick ways to be pked out of your clan. These type of people are the biggest drain on fun in a clan. Their sentences start with "I Need."

Just a few thoughts... *glares at old clan*
I agree with all the above but i've told my girlfriend we can't go out every 2nd Sunday due to siege ^^
Bit of an old topic, but I'll add my opinions... Not like I can bump a sticky, what?
I've been a clan leader in many different MMOs, a member in every game I've played, and a co-leader in a Lineage II clan. I've seen a lot, though I'll be the first to admit that a clan leader has FAR more to do in a Lineage clan than in any other clan/guild/org in any other game.
These were the things I looked for to promote a rookie member to a "full-time" member. Bear in mind, these're a few months old, so I'm a bit behind the times in clan management.
1. Spend time in Clan chat! Or Alliance chat if your clan tells you to talk there instead. You joined to be part of a whole, not a loner. We're all here because, at least on some level, we want to remember that there are people playing the game with us, not just computer-generated characters.
2. Do not beg in clan. This one's tough, because there's often a fine line between begging and asking for help. If you're two million adena from that new weapon you saw in a seller's window, and the seller's going out to raid in a few minutes, asking to borrow the money is fair game. If you don't get a response, or get a negative response, do not ask again. As a guild leader, I was willing to accept private messages asking to borrow game money in other games so long as the member hadn't previously spammed the guild chat. Begging for money, items, powerleveling, that sort of thing, and by begging I mean repeated, whiny, never-to-be-sufficiently-/blocked spam, is a quick way to see yourself to the door, in my book.
3. Find a clan that's good for you. Let's face it, some clans are just wrong for some members. Generally, you can't change the clan to suit you; you usually end up changing to suit the clan, instead. If you don't want to change, and the clan can't/won't change (such as, in an extreme example, an RP clan and a non-RP member not wanting to have RP in clan chat), quit. No hard feelings on either side, though you ought to have looked before you leaped, in joining.
4. Balance the scales. Keep yourself to a point where your conscience says you've helped the clan as much as possible. Bear in mind, participation points count (at least for me) as much as adena or items. If you get something from the clan, as sooner or later any well-set clan will help its members do, don't feel indebted until you can pay it back. Unless they specifically said differently, a clan helps a member with items because it wants the member to have the item, not feel guilty because they can't afford to pay it back. On the other hand, don't freely accept the clan's largesse and not talk in the clan channel for weeks at a time. See #1.
5. Lastly, be generous, but don't be cavalier. New members need to stand on their own two feet for a time. It's cold, heartless, and otherwise just plain mean, but if they don't learn to support themselves in the low levels, they'll become a burden on the clan, their friends, and frankly, they won't really enjoy the game either. Help members help themselves! If you've got a low clan member who can't seem to level, help them find groups, or give them a bit of a boost by buffing them now and again. If you can afford the time, escort them to a good solo spot and help keep them alive with the <clears throat sarcastically> smegloads of experience they'll be getting. But don't powerlevel them, given them an entire set of armor and weapons, or anything like that, and expect them to hit C-grade and know precisely how to earn the adena for it.
That's my take on a good member. It rambles a lot, but perhaps you can see the idea. I know, I'm a cruel person in a lot of ways, which is why I generally choose subordinates to handle helping people while I run the administrative crud. But I believe every word of what I've written.
