The roleplaying in Lineage 2

General Discussion Started Last reply 103 posts
Greetings, all!
One thing that constanly disapoints me is the lacking of roleplaying in this game. Lineage gives rich opportunities for RP but I very very rarely see that someone roleplays. I see more and more characters with robot names like "G2UP91" or "YU1Z0" or the like, which makes me wana sick up. Not to say that I never heard such characters talk in any way, so I somehow started to believe in the mith of bots around here... The few people with normal names (few, compared to the others) I met never showed any sign of RP spirit, except a handful who showed some promice. I don't even want to talk about the huge amount of people who speak like this - "k, c u" or "gime money plz" or "Im 4 this 2" and so on.
I cannot believe it that there are no RP people at all in this game, so I decided to write this post with the hope you will prove I am wrong. I propose you to write short introduction to youselves and description of your RP style and if you want - what have you done to bring more RP in the game. Then pehaps I will tell you some of my stories...

First off, I highly doubt that these are "real" players (if you know what I mean ;) ) so I wouldn't worry about them.

Have you made a toon on Lionna? Lionna is the unofficial Roleplay server. I don't know why that is but it's been talked about since prelude (or so it seems).

So I would go to Lionna and see if you can find players who share your interests.

As far as other players, it seems that many of them are lured by the "PvP" so of course you are going to get a bit of that. Yes, it's a shame to hear the "l33t speak" but that's how they like to play so there it is.

Good luck.
Go play lionna, btw not every likes RP or thinks its cool.
Greetings!
There is a whole section of the official forums dedicated to RP chars. On most servers there are also one or two clans that love to RP. Frankly, in a game where you gotta type everything out, RP gets a bit cumbersome at times. However, there is no excuse for "characters" with names like NADLSJD. I try to ignore them as best I can, pretend they are part of the scenery, and train them all to hell whenever I get the chance.
Find yourself an RP clan (it takes alot of looking sometimes) and have a blast. It is a bummer that the first thing you have to see is a bunch of nonsense names suiciding on the guards in the starter towns, but unfortunately that is the game you entered. Get to Dion when you level up some, and you will meet real players.
Greetings,

what have you done to bring more RP in the game. Then pehaps I will tell you some of my stories...

My Bulgarian friend, welcome to L2.

It's not a RP encouraging environment, however... More items have come our way, and social activities such as fishing are available.

I have given you a 5 star curse in this house, and would strongly suggest you correct the typo in your sig... It's Heaven.

As for ruling in Hell... *Red glare*

You are looking at him, stranger.

Yes, it's a shame to hear the "l33t speak" but that's how they like to play so there it is.

But i like the 1337 speak :D talking 1337 is a form of role play isnt it tho? It may not be a pirate accent but its still out of the ordinary.

It's been a while but I could swear there was a part in the LotR books where Gandalf talked about pwning noobs, then rofled over something Pippin did.

I would have to agree. Even though I don't like the leet speak, is it any worse than players speaking with many "thee's" and "thou's"? Though admittedly, "prithy, I have slain thee knave" sounds a lot nicer than "n00b, I pwned u!"

I love that part!
But which insults you more? 1337 speak when used as insults seems to really hit home where it hurts. If someone ye olde english style insulted me, i would either, not udnerstand, or think the guy was weird and screwed in the head.
Roleplaying can only work if people understand what it is your doing lol.
I recall reading somewhere about a guy who wanted people to start a new toon and play exlusivly RP style, but he gave up because it didnt work and he had bad responses, people like me who just doesnt get it prevent role play really.

Neither, really. Why do internet insults hurt you at all?

Hi there.

Darkmotion, thank you for being a kind devil and linking the spotlight.

Moraat, allow me to welcome you to Lineage 2, and thank you for your interest in the role-playing aspect of the game. There are actually a good many of us who, as has been mentioned already, role-play on Lionna.

I recommend swinging by the L2RPA (http://www.l2rpa.org) and making yourself known.

If you come to Lionna, send a PM to me some time.

There are also some people interested in firing up RP on other servers, just so you know.

Best of luck, and happy hunting.

(Oh, and as an afterthought: Not everyone talks with a pirate accent or with thees and thous. I know I have seen maybe one person who uses thee and thou.)
How is insulting someone online any different from real life? Its still a personal attack.

Ok, that cracked me up.
I am really surprised I got so many replies so fast *laughs*. First, thank you for the warm welcomes. I do not actually disagree with anything said so far. I haven't played Lineage 2 since C2 and I am surprised how many changes were made. I have chosen Teon as playground because it is closest to my home, but if the Lionna is the Rp server perhaps I will have to move on there... I will consider it so and so.

P.S. Thanks, Darkmotion. It really should have been 'Heaven' in my signature. I mistyped my self *wink*.
Teon has the least english-speaking people so they wouldnt understand your role play, go lionna tbh.

How is insulting someone online any different from real life? Its still a personal attack.

Because I'm an adult? It doesn't bother me?

Scenerio 1: Someone randomly PKs you and shouts "You suxxor at PvP Noob!"
Scenerio 2: Someone randomly calls your phone number and says "You are a moron."

Tell me where the personal insult is? Why would you even care?
I should say, that I am more insulted by the actions of the people than by their words, but since I am actually playing this game and not a bot, I will take any insulting indeed as personal. Still since I am long after 18, I take these things from the fun side and rarely get angry. Take it easy people - if some kid insults you remember he or she is just off his or her mother's breast and can think only in 'milky' way *wink*.

I should say, that I am more insulted by the actions of the people than by their words, but since I am actually playing this game and not a bot, I will take any insulting indeed as personal.

So ... if my dwarfie on Teon should meet your (probably) Dark Elf and insult him, you'd take that personal? Why? I just insulted your character, after all, not you ...

And, since we're talking about RP here, there is a difference between those two. I'd never insult a player. I have no problems hurling colourful descriptions at a character.
SPS: Between being flamed by SkeletonMaster/LostGrace or myself, what do you think stings more? That's the difference between being flamed/verbally attacked by a pwnzerer and an RPer. Personally, I'd tread lightly around RPers if I had problems with flames. They pride themselves in their handle of the English language and creativity, and while most of them are peaceful, they will bite when poked.

Moraat, there are elements of this game that are somewhere between incredibly difficult and impossible to implement in roleplay - such as the grind. It's even more difficult to find a good clan for your needs (I've given up, myself). Search thoroughly before you settle down (and don't be afraid to "hop" a few clans, RPers should understand trying to find the perfect match and not begrudge it).

When looking for a clan, here a few things you might want to consider checking for similarities, it's mostly small stuff that doesn't seem important, but it becomes so soon.

1.) At which ocassions do I want to be IC?
Not all aspects of Lineage II invite roleplay, and thus you will likely at least ocassionally play not as your character but just as the player. Think about whether you want to be in character on clan chat, in whispers, in general talk, in shout, as the mood strikes you, just for special ocassions, etc.

2.) What mood are you aiming for?
An epic storyline? Fluff? Some daily soap style relationship drama?

3.) How do you integrate in game events into your play?
Gathering money and experience, character death, religious blessings - do you integrate these into your gameplay experience? Does your character experience a sort of high when buffed, or when using a potion? How does it feel to use magic? why do the monsters drop adena? What does a character death imply - does the character actually die and get resurrected, does he merely faint?

4.) How do you integrate non-role-players?
Ignore them altogether? Ignore them while you are RPing? See them as filler background roles?

Consider your roleplaying style and make sure it matches your clan's.

I made a very bad choice that made me angry and unhappy at a clan that didn't deserve it - they play their way, and I'm sure they enjoy it (which is the only point of RP, no matter what the elitist part of me says :p ).

I'm certain that eventually I will bump into the two or three roleplayers with whom I can do the storylines I dream of - but until then, I'm marked and burned, forever reluctant to roleplay with people who don't match my style at all.

Excuse my melodramatic tone, I'm looking at the cover of Saikano Volume 6 whileI write - it's influencing me I think. ;)
Thank you for the rich reply, MalineII. I agree with you and will try to follow your advices. I decided to move to Lionna now, but I am curious about one thing - will I benefit the new character bonuses after I reach level 6 there or I blowed them away with my level 12 character on Tion (what if I delete him first?)?
_Akjosch_, what I meaned is a bit defferent. When someone roleplays, you can almost always understand this and accept his or her insults as a part of the roleplay. When I got abused by a player however, who tells is like this "w, fak u n00b" then he or she most surely doesn't roleplay and I keep my right to take it personally. But that's me - I don't say it is the right thing to do.
No, you will receive the same newbie benefits on Lionna.

If you want to meet nice people, try to see if you can find Durwin - he's my old clan leader, and despite all the verbal slight I've done him, he was always a good one. Then again, if you go to l2rpa as adviced earlier, you will probably already have met him and many others.
Welcome to Lionna then. We have many roleplaying clans here so I believe you will find what suits your needs. Lets see.
EinhasadTemplars - The good guys (and gals), trying to stay IC 24/7 (and with good success too) http://home.comcast.net/~lordturalyon/index.html
EchoesOfDarkness - The evil band, not sure about their style right now, but I'm sure jkoster can tell you more as well as give a link to site (sorry, don't have it bookmarked)
EventideSentries - We're the rather neutral folk, though allied with Templars in our fight against Shilen Cultists (24/7 IC as well) www.eventidesentries.4me.pl/forum (http://www.eventidesentries.4me.pl/forum)
TheLostOrder - From my impression rather closed group keeping their roleplay within their alliance (DefendersOath) tlo.guildportal.com (http://tlo.guildportal.com)
Bloodrock - Band of rampaging orcs, evil and mean (24/7 IC as well) http://www.bloodrock.xillin.com/forums/index.php
What happened to AvantGuards?

And I see that Lionna still lacks a semi-OOC/epic clan. Moaaaah. ;) Maybe I should make an alt there and found one myself.
<laughs> forgot about them.
AvandGuard is still around and kickin if you feel like joining mercs <doesn't remember website adress either> -.-

It's been a while but I could swear there was a part in the LotR books where Gandalf talked about pwning noobs, then rofled over something Pippin did.

I ROFL'ed

Now on to some senseless rambling:
speaking of RP and the lack there of; I just saw a guy named xxxeminemxxx... (was xxeminemxx taken?) When someone create a character name like that, they should be insta-banned, in my opinion. I am not a roleplayer, and I would kill myself before I RP'ed, but I do enjoy well-thought out character names - I realise my main character has a [censored] name, and I wish I'd thought of a better one. But if you need to put xx or oO in before and after your actual name, you need to think harder (this means you, vlad ;) ). And all that using one letter or a number instead of a word, really bothers me. So I can empathise with RP'ers in this regard.

EDIT:

I just saw a guy named xxxeminemxxx... (was xxeminemxx taken?)

I just asked. xxeminemxx was not taken. xxxeminemxxx was his first choice :p

No, you will receive the same newbie benefits on Lionna.

Durwin asked me to join AvantGuard recently. At first I said no, because I never roleplayed, but now the offer start to be intersting. I might accept to try roleplaying a litle.
Don't join a roleplay clan to try out RP - hang out with them instead. The AGs are a nice bunch (they put up with my then even more neurotic self after all :D ), I'm sure they won't mind RPing with you a little - no need to be a member. ;)
If personal insults are all fine and well then why is it a bannable offense?
I dont take much offense to being insulted, but it will provoke me to answer back or just /pk their sorry ***.

If personal insults are all fine and well then why is it a bannable offense?

I'm fine with speeding but it's a punishable offense. Also, you said "personal". That implies that they know you personally, i.e, in real life. Most insults in the game are not personal. Saying "I pwn you noob" is not a personal insult and will not get you banned.

I dont take much offense to being insulted, but it will provoke me to answer back or just /pk their sorry ***.

Cool. That's what the game is for.

Nevertheless, why take it personally? You still haven't answered that.
rp is bad. don't rp. a guy tried it with me once and I had to pk him. well I pked him cause he was a terrible party member, but the rping convinced me I was doing everybody a service by pking him.

as for makeing names like a8fhp89hanfwepigo a bannable offense... besides that being dumb... there was a really good reason to make your name hard to spell and read for pvp purposes, macros have made it less important now.

<--- ingame name lI1IIlO0OIllI1

ok that isn't really my ingame name, but I wish it was.
"Don't RP in a group that does not care for your RP." is about the same as "Don't come to a thread for RPers and complain about them, nobody cares about your non-RPing trolling here."

Make sense much?

If you had to PK someone for RPing, they were either incompetent, playing an incompetent character (which no sensible RPer should do outside of a group that knows and expects they are), or you were being a close-minded idiot.
About the "1337 5p33x": I do not meet sort of real 1337 5p33x, more of I would call ... gamer's speech? using acronyms, shortens words etc ... it comes from good ol' times of playing FPSs over LAN or internet, where people need to type as least as possible. Not that you can get shot while typing, but imagine there are situations in L2 where fast typing can be life saver. You are in a group fighting hard, there is threat of full party wipeout ... of course I can start typing "Can I offer my 20% ressurection skill to ressurect you so you can continue fighting or do you wait for Blessed ressurection scroll?" or tank "Can you please heal me I am low on health, too many monsters spawned around" - as opposed to "20% res ok?" or "Heal plz".

Not to mention that many players do not speak english well, and saying "res you 20%?" is more understandable for them as one whole sentence full of many english words about ressurection skill.

Of course, Being party wiped while roleplaying in dungeon is usually no big deal for true roleplayers, but most people do not roleplay, they play to achieve some goal ... like get XP err I mean experience points as fast as possible.

No worries, us "gamerz" can type the normal way, on Vent we talk normal english or whatever language. We just ... do not need to, we say anything we need sending few characters, thus lowering our bandwidth load, thus better pings and response time ... :)
Roleplayers should take delight in getting party wiped - and then setting up the scenario of what happened afterwards! My best P&P RP experience was an almost complete party wipe right at the end of a campaign (last man standing was an unarmed elven wizard without spells, a-hah-hah).

That sat a very good basis for our next campaign, with the elven wizard getting handed over to the GM as an NPC - of course that wouldn't work in L2, but then, in an L2 campaign, anyone can spontaneously start storytelling and introducing NPC.. I mean alts. ;)
RP can be very elusive in lineage, your best bet is finding an rp clan or alliance. Lionna seems to have the most of them. As a quick clarification on Dalamars post since hes advertising for me ;). EinhasadTemplars and Imperial Legion Alliance are IC 24/7 in gen chat, ally, clan and party is whatever the players want to do at the time.

Check out l2rpa, there is another rp site in the works, but still under construction. PM me in game if you want some help, I have a new 18ish alt starting up you could party with.
Hello, I am a roleplayer on the Lionna server and I try to promote it as much as possible. I am a part time member of the avant guards (With my summoner Kaelir), part time evil necromancer, and part time whatever I feel like rerolling to at the moment.

I find that waiting for people to roleplay around you NEVER works. You must get out there, roleplay with everyone you meet, no matter how weird they may think it is. If you get a rude response or a "lol", move on. You will find people who share your interests. All you have to do is look, and keep looking, and don't stop. Not every roleplayer frequents the boards or knows about l2rpa.org. I know I didn't for at least the first five months I played, but it didn't stop me.

What I find surprising is that sometimes a clan hinders roleplaying, if they don't match your style. You do not need a clan to be a roleplayer. I find that most clans will rp with you no matter what level/clan you are in.

This I have found out to be the most important thing - you must, must, MUST take the intiative. Some roleplayers are shy and do not want to be looked down upon. I know the sinking feeling of being called a "loser" or a "moron", and despite trying to brush it off it isn't fun.

We are everywhere. Sometimes we are hiding. But all you have to do is look. This is how I met Maline, Durwin, Nifsali, Laelyn, and many others.

Look me up sometimes. I'll usually be on Kaelir or Karafima at the Lionna server.
Have you ever tried role-playing a mime? That's hard work.
Both Woofie and I have played more or less mute characters.

It was fun, frustrating and a learning experience. I'm convinced I could do it better now.

EchoesOfDarkness - The evil band, not sure about their style right now, but I'm sure jkoster can tell you more as well as give a link to site (sorry, don't have it bookmarked)

Thank you Dalamar. Our site can be found at http://eod.rimwall.com. We are an darker-neutral clan, but having just gone through a reformation we're taking a long look at what we are. I think we're going to be going darker. We are home to some vile, evil people (like me), but a few others that are not quite so nasty.

EoD prides itself on inter-personal and emotional warfare. Why PK your enemy senseless when you can just confuse them to no end? Why plot their demise when you can have them working for you?

Oops... I've said too much.

Aaaanyway...

Maline, you say you are looking for something epic. Send me a PM some time. I'm always interested in epic storylines. I'm working on one right now that the Legion seems to be loving.
I have roleplayed a blind person, a mute person, a crazy person (not much of a stretch there), a dark elf raised by wolves (twice), a young girl realizing her evil powers, a dark elf running from pursuers in her home land, an elf claimed by demons, an elf who could see and communicate with the dead, a cat transformed and put into the body of a human, an escaped slave, a dark elf noble, a human raised by dwarves, a dwarf who runs with wolves and was in love with a light elf, a human searching for her parents, a dark elf searching for pieces of dreams, a dark elf who had to dig herself out of her grave, an orc on a vengeance quest, an orc searching for peace and order restored to Elmore, a young elf who has vowed to never kill anything, ever again, a crazy, wandering fisherman who does nothing but sit on the docks talking about the big one who got away, and a little girl enslaved by orcs and later realized only for an experiment.

That about covers it.
So you cant stick to a role? How long does an average role last before you give up on it?
I wont role play because ill get bored and i hate keep on playing alts all the time.
I've been playing Olorae for over a year now, since I came to the Lionna server. I've had a few problems with being able to connect, but she's been my solid character since day one.

I do have a number of alts (including one I was making for non-RP that ended up getting a plotline of his own, ironically), but I always come back to Olorae.

RP doesn't have to be about always in-character. Yes, I am almost always IC, but sometimes it helps to just take a little while and dedicate to just grinding, or what have you.

There was a question posed about how to handle things like experience and money and such. I treat them as they are. I get XP from a mob? I am learning how to fight better (or how to keep an eye on my friends, since I'm a healer). That giant cat dropped money? Well, odds are we skinned it and that's the value we get when we go back to sell it.

I died? No I didn't. I was just rendered unconscious. My friends either woke me up (rez / scroll) or took me back to town. Just a little aside on that last one. Since I play a healer, I assume a divine intervention capability. Oops. I died. Well, Shilen wasn't done with me yet, so she sent me back. I did not please her, so she punished me (XP loss).
How would you explain leveling up? If that happened to me id be like double you tea eff maytes.
Actually, most roleplayers keep one character and stick with it. I, however, suffer from general reroll-itis as well as I like exploring all possibilities. I am a writer at heart, I love new characters, and new stories.

Roleplaying is really the only thing that keeps me in this game. If you get a really good group to roleplay with, some intense roleplay with plot-lines and fear and adrenaline, the effect is amazing. It is really a rush.

I remember someone roleplaying in Gludio and then someone goes, Omg, Roleplayers! I confronted her about it.

Me: Why don't you like roleplayers?
Her: They're stupid
Me: Yes, but why?
Her: I don't know, I just don't like them.

She then proceeded to leave. if I hadn't of had 7 pks I would have probably killed her outside of town. Ignorance really deserves death. If you don't like roleplayers, so be it, but please come up with a LEGITIMATE reason why they are "stupid noobs", instead of trash-talking something you don't understand.
I dont like role players because they make me feel uncomfortable, when i play i like to talk to other people, not some invented pirate or what ever it is. Its hard to strike up a conversation with someone if your conversation topics are so limited. Especially with some role players who are playing as possesd tards under the order of shillen and hate all other races. Hearing DOWN WITH EVA !!! all the time when your grinding annoys me.
Also as a role player how do you jsutify pking a non-role player?

How would you explain leveling up? If that happened to me id be like double you tea eff maytes.

Well, think of it as a sudden revelation. All that fighting and work has paid off, and now you're stronger. That's just one aspect of it, too. You could look at it from the aspect of a blessing from the gods, if you wanted to. They see your efforts, and reward you for them.

Just remember... what the gods give, they can take away.
Being a dark elf do you show a constant hate/dislike towards all light elfs? I would think playing that way wont make you many friends.
Also how do you explain private messages clan messages etc, a person half way across the world talking to you...or do you use carrier pigeons?

if I hadn't of had 7 pks I would have probably killed her outside of town. Ignorance really deserves death. If you don't like roleplayers, so be it, but please come up with a LEGITIMATE reason why they are "stupid noobs", instead of trash-talking something you don't understand.

Why get mad? Why not just add them to your story line?

Why does everyone get so mad at what people say to them in a game? For example, if I happened to be out hunting and not using SS, someone comes up and says "you're stupid for not using SS" should I get upset and PK them? I have nothing against RPers but some of you seem to walk around with this chip on your should and just dare anyone to knock it off.

If you want to fight me, then fight me but I can guarentee one thing, there is nothing anyone can say to me in this game that will get me into a fight any faster.

Especially with some role players who are playing as possesd tards under the order of shillen and hate all other races. Hearing DOWN WITH EVA !!! all the time when your grinding annoys me.

You've just run into the more vocal types... Olorae is quite racist, yes, but she is diplomatic. She realizes that you can catch more flies with honey, so to speak, so she'll be polite to everyone and start working her machinations subtly.

Also as a role player how do you jsutify pking a non-role player?

Simple, first you look at the circumstance. Were you PKed by the N-RP? Now it's just vengance. Did the N-RP insult you (as a role-player)? Well, perhaps your character is insulted that they said you're playing a part. After all, your character certainly isn't acting (Well, maybe they are. That's for you to decide). Again, vengance for a slight.

There are hundreds of ways to justify something IC. It all depends on the character and the circumstance.
Your personality is most likely just superior to everyone elses lol.
If someone starts to mock me, insulting me in-real life, calling me names etc i will go out of my way to tear that person a new hole. For example if someone IRL starts dissing on you and ur family i dont care who you are it will effect you, for me its the same in-game and usually i end up working off karma.

Your personality is most likely just superior to everyone elses lol.

Not at all. I have, however, dealt with high blood pressure and ulcers. They aren't fun.

If someone starts to mock me, insulting me in-real life, calling me names etc i will go out of my way to tear that person a new hole. For example if someone IRL starts dissing on you and ur family i dont care who you are it will effect you, for me its the same in-game and usually i end up working off karma.

Real-life is different than in game. I'm betting you'll have your first heart attack before you're 35.

Are you that Doug "Boom Headshot" guy?
lol what, whos boom headshot supposed 2 be ?
in-game and irl arnt that far apart, lineage2 is a giant chat room, your still talking to real people, its not like there npc or anything.
The way i deal with it irl is usually ignore it, im not a little snitch who go's crying to the police/mummy. Dont get me wrong i dont get bullied or anything lol, it jsut happens to everyone sometimes.
I still remember the first time Olorae got a PK. It was a non-RPer that kept kill-stealing me. I was starting to get really frustrated, both IC and OOC, so finally I just waited until a spider had chewed on him for a little bit and then smacked him with a Windstrike. Well, he fell down, I finished off the spider, and laughed.

It's all about your character. Are they the type that will use violence first, or will they reserve that for a later attempt? Or, are they the type who will use other's violence?

in-game and irl arnt that far apart

You have got to be kidding me. They couldn't be further apart.

If someone cuts you off in traffic do you take it as a personal insult? Do you go out of your way to be insulted??
I don't RP at people who don't want to hear it (unless they're bashing RPers, thent hey deserve it ;) ), especially not in party. I don't explain grinding for the most part either - it's part of the game, but not part of my roleplaying experience there.

Frankly, if my character actually wants to kill something, it's the worst experience you could imagine - because as any sensible person, he or she would dodge as much aggro as possible, kill whatever he wanted and be back out of there.

I don't think it's possible to stay in character all the time without ridiculing yourself or playing a very peculiar type.

... or staying level 1.
Ok so your IC, and your fighting against something trying to kill you, some guy assists you and essentially saves your life thru ks'ing you, wouldnt you be gratefull and say thanks instead of pking him? Afterall you dont care about less exp because it doesnt exist right?

Actually, in the case of my first PK, my life was never threatened. I was doing a **** fine job of dropping the spiders before they even got to me. So to have him run up and start chopping on them was insulting. He was saying I didn't have the prowess to finish a fight myself (when I knew for a fact I could). So, insert a hot-tempered little acolyte that wants to prove herself, and you have one dead little human.

Fast forward to now: Someone runs up to my mob and kills it, that's probably a good thing since I'm in my mid-50's and can't effectively solo anything. Now, I'll likely be thankful.

And XP does exist, in the form of knowledge, of training.
Imagine going for a jog, someone drives by you, drags you into their car and throws you out where you were jogging to.

Seems like a pretty ******ed thing to do, and that is what KSing is like ICly. If you're fighting something, chances are it's a challenge to you - maybe you just want it dead (then you say thank you), but maybe you wanted nothing more than the thrill or challenge of battle.

I personally think it's fine to go OOC on OOC people - no point trying to soak your whole gameplay with your character when there are so many things that can not be reasonably explained.
If you think roleplaying is limited, SPS, then obviously you haven't been around that many roleplayers. Not all dark elves are racist; actually MOST aren't. (I said most, not all.)

Roleplaying is a diverse experience. It isn't for everyone.

And as for your questions:

Everything I do is not Ic, so if I was going to pk him it would be out of my own personal spite. Pms and messenges can be several things, it isn't limited : I.E telepathy, relaying messengers, pretending to talk face to face, whispering, pigeon carriers as well.

Roleplaying isn't a straight road, it's a tree... connecting to another tree.. connecting to another tree. Its a forest of options, even if a lot of roleplayers don't care to use all their options.

Maline, I wish you would come back to Lionna :( I loved rping with you.

Well said Woofie, well said.
Sounds complicated and like a lot of hassle, im sure my friends wouldnt appreicate me going role player on em so ill stick to the '1337'ist crew.
I lack imagination anyway so i wouldnt be able to make it work.
Also what hapopens when you make a typing mistake >.< you cant correct yuorself yourself* Maybe you bit your tongue or something o.O?
Well, RP isn't for everyone. It takes a decent imagination, and the ability to maintain continuity in storyline.

Though anyone who is a 1337-speaker certainly has some imagination...
I would be interested to know if any hardcore role player has ever made it to end game, like lvl 70+. I would have thought not.
Not any that I know of, but the roleplayer base is steadily becoming higher and higher level. The average rper is 50+ now. (I wouldn't consider myself average, I'm a perma-noob.) Most of us like to enjoy the game instead of rushing through it.
I know that a few of us are nearing the 70 mark. I'm 54 myself at the moment, but I'm levelling fairly fast. I should be 55 by the end of the week.

I know the Legion has a few high-60's, if not higher.
Roleplayers traditionally level slower as they usually are people who have plenty of other stuff (and that's not to say othersdon't, but the concentration among the roleplayers is higher - almost all of us write, have other internet or real life social obligations etc.), and of course their in game time is rarely dedicated to grinding, especially the 24/7 RPers.

To me as an, if you will, casual RPers, I would level faster if I weren't so lazy - but I'm sure I'll get up there eventually.
Hey there! I like the way this conversations has gone to. I actually didn't believe there are so many RPs here, not to speak of whole clans.
Anyway, I just started on Lionna, so it will take some time for me to reach the "heights". Still, I've done the first 10 levels yesterday, so perhaps there is hope for me :D. I haven't got time to visit the www.l2rpa.org (http://www.l2rpa.org) yet, but I'll do so now before I enter the game.
By the way, I like to use the RP name "Belleal Moraat", so you can find me in game as "Belleal" (The lack of family name here is anoying . I got used to Guild Wars for so long that I couldn't understant at first why L2 gave me incorrect name when I was creating my current character. Let's hope they'll allow us to get family names with some later expansion...).
And about this topic: Roleplaying is a great way to make a game such L2 far more interesting and rich in experience for its players. I don't know if all of you like going to teater (I like), but RP can be explained that way too. Just, we usually haven't got scripts at first so everything is imagination and quick addaption. I am sure the most people who say they don't like RP actually haven't even seen a RP conversation in their lifes. It's the same like in teater - the most people do not like it untill the first play they have to visit (usually. there are heavy cases in this too :D). Anyway, I am still considering my storyline, but the raw data is "Dark elf, mage, on the way to Storm Screamer, doesn't draw the weapon if there is better way to solve a problem, not rasist toward light elves but actually looking upon all other races with a bit of distaste.". Well, I still have time to decide.
Ahh, by the way, I've made another character on Lionna today. You may search for "Dianmair" if you want to meet me. He is Orc-mage and gives me the taste of melee battle along with spell casting... but I am not sure if is worthy to develop him further yet.
Do you have to roleplay going for a bath everyday down at the lake lol? How do you survive without food aswell >.<
Roleplaying is not an extension of real life - It is like a story being played out. Have you ever read a story where every miniscule detail of the character was written down? (Today I went to the bathroom, then shaved, then I ate a breakfast of ham, eggs, and toast. I choked on the toast a bit my wife tried to pat my back but I told her not to worry, then i got in my car... forgot my briefcase, had to go back in the house.)

If you write a story like this, detailing every little bit of the character, then its boring. Roleplay is not supposed to be boring, it's supposed to tell a story. Roleplay is a little bit of exposition (like you said, eating, bathing) but it is mostly rising action, plot problems, socializing. You have to assume that the character is taking care of such bodily functions, but to detail them would be pointless.

leet speaker are far more annoying to me than RPers ever could be.
Lol thats some intense 1337ismz.
I would like to see some roleplayers on bartz just to see what there like, all my experiances with them (6 so far) have been negative, especially the ******ed elf hater.

doesn't ernesto rp? people give him crap for it... don't know if he really does much or not.
Fine, I'm making an anti-l33t speak clan. I think I'll have a lot more members than you do.
A whole lot, Woofie.

And we really shouldn't mind HIEverybody. He's rapidly proving to be nothing but a hater. He hates RPers, he hates non-"hardcore" players. I bet he hates his mom, his dad, old people, and babies. I'm surprised he can even stand breathing, eating, or being alive.

Anyway, I am all for the anti-l33t speak clan. Tell me where to sign up.
Don't forget puppies. He hates them, too. :(
You would be surprised at how many 1337's there are, just cos they dont use this forum doesnt mean they dont exist.

I hate pooping in public places, but we all hate that.

that's y i first came here... A friend was talking to me about how everybody on the official forums were carebear and rpers and would never reach 2nd class change, but they were demanding in large numbers to soften l2.

I found this not to be completely true, and have stuck around TRYING to represent the 100s of people who think 90% of everything that is posted is here is bad.... I don't do a very good job though, but I try.

Especially if they are talking in Old English. Then forget about it:

Hwæt! We Gardena in geardagum,

I would just like to say that i can reciet that entire thing perfectly.

:)

Depends... How public..?
Wow this thread exploded, I joted down most the questions, thought Id give you some answers from the 24/7 crowd ;).

Different Characters and changing roles: I have played Turalyon in one form or another in a variety of game settings for 10 years now ranging from Pen and Paper D&D to MMO's. I have a few alts but I stick with a Character because my gaol is to be a Phoenix Knight and Paladin Olympiad Heroe. Paladin ftw!

PKing people: Turalyons primary focus is Justice, he will kill defending those who cant defend themselves, seeing that justice is served, or helping those his oaths bind him too.

EXP: Combat is the constant perfection of the body and the mind. In real life as a practitioner of Medieval European Long Sword fencing, if you dont fight, practice and use the skills they fade. THere are many monsters and creatures that plague the citizens of Aden, and so Turalyon fights them to improve his skills so he can kill people like olorae ;) more efficiently. Also NPC quests give us great reasons, Enelya my SwS is currently hunting the monsters of Aligator Island for the bounty on them.

Clan Chat, Whispers, and Ally chat: I am hardly EVER IC in these chat windows. For IC justification of coming to my friends aid who call in clan chat, we serve the temples of Einhasad, so messages relay quickly through the network of temples. I also joke that we carry conch shells that work like startrek communicators >.>.

SirElrohir-Yes many RPers have a GINORMUS chip on their shoulder. Sit down shut up and fight them. Most people who pick on rpers only understand one thing, EXP loss. Or let it roll off the back and keep on playing how you enjoy to play.

Maline it is super Easy to be IC 24/7. Chit Chat with your party members in between the slaying, when a catacomb pull starts to go really south Turalyon will resite battle prayers and such invoking the power of his goddess to protect him(Ultimate defense). Grinding in search of items or rare things that these creatures rumor to posses explains farming mats. Spoil on my dwarf is my favorite. Nothing like rumaging through lizardmen intestines looking for some thread they swallowed ;).

As to daily chores (bathing, potty breaks etc.) Enelya ALWAYS takes a bath after coming out of hte swamps of hiene. Hours trudging through [censored] water and giant aligator organs gets a girl pretty messy. If i just go off to rp somewhere she will pop into the elven temple 'take a bath' coming out a few moments later in casual clothes and go do her thing. I dont really rp every action, but give the illusion she was gone and came back after freshening up.

The reason I RP is that its weavinga story and creating a more real experiance. I can play Morrowind, get uber and tarrorize the towns if I wanted to play lineage without RP. If i wanted to pwn someone, id log onto halo or some other FPS and club people in the back of the head. I play lineage for the interaction, both RP in gen chat, and ooc in party and ally chat meeting some really cool and creative people.

1337 that.
JK i really hope you had a program that did that for you because if you can just write in hex....im afraid
Be afraid. This is what insomnia does to programmers.
I'm more scared of people that know the ascii table by heart than of those who can read binary. :)
what a fabulous post--i seldom read anything quite this long on this site.
Great question and the responses were a hoot.
I have never rp'd as a noob. But.....I gotta tell ya...i FEEL like a dwarf artisan imersed in the 2nd class change. I wouldn't have believed it if you would have told me it was true.
I AM, somehow, that sarcastic dwarf (and don't quite understand how).
I don't know 'chat speak'...spend half my time asking what abbreviations mean. I don't speak or understand french. And the orcs on lionna confuse me most of the time with their rp. The other day i found myself trying to recall high school german!!!!
I love all parts of the game. It's diverse, and complicated, and surprising.
I didn't join this game to rp. Actually, I have no concrete idea in the world why i joined this game!
I can see the RP though...it makes sense to me.
Just enjoy the whole thing...to the original OP...if you want to try RP....this is a GAME--try it. You have nothing to lose.

PS. Anyone who puts an 'e' on the end of a word in chat should be pk'd. Anyone who puts more than one 'e' on a perfectly good word should be serially ganked. Anyone who thinks "ye olde goode shoppee" is acceptable should be killed in real life (just kidding--it's a JOKE)
Hardcore RPer if you'd like to call me that here. currently 60, stopped leveling to save for at least my A armor. Half way there already.

JK i really hope you had a program that did that for you because if you can just write in hex....im afraid

That's not Hex. It's Binary.

Remember:

There are only 10 types of people in this world.
Those who understand Binary, and those who don't.
Hardcore RPers have really big trouble explaining the process of grinding. ;)

Softcore RPers level. :) <super squishy softcore>

IMHO a hardcore RPer is someone who grinds a lot to get their character to a point where the power/wealth they decided for them is achieved, and then never does anything excelt questing, raiding and PvPing anymore.

Oh, and hanging in town. :p
I consider myself a hardcore RPer. An uber-RPer, if you will. (Ha! I'm uber! Take that!)

I define grinding as a dedicated day (or however many pass IC) to devote to being in the field, training skills and leaning processes. Just because I'm not focusing on the XP ICly doesn't mean I'm not paying attention to it OOC.

Jay, the player, looks at numbers just like anyone else. I look for the perfect group, the ideal grind % / hour, etc. Olorae, the character, looks at furthering her faith via the miracles she works in the field (buffs and heals / ressurections / etc) and furthering her training in combatative arts (seeing as she does get in there and start swinging her sword every now and then).

[Edit]
To clarify, I'd rather I not have to grind, but I accept it as a part of the game, just like PVP and PKing and griefing and such.

I consider myself a hardcore RPer. An uber-RPer, if you will. (Ha! I'm uber! Take that!)

Be honest now, are you a hardcore RPer or do you role-play a hardcore RPer?
Hmm...

Good question. I am a die-hard RPer. How about that. Neutral territory. I RP more than I grind, by choice. I RP long, long hours, by choice. I calculate storylines and plots while I'm not connected.

Die-hard, hardcore... Enh...

Though I have seen hardcore RP as well, but that's best left for a more NC-17 forum, I suspect.
I remember this one time someone mistold into party. :o There were minors there!
Yep. I've seen a few of those...

My personal favorite was intentional...

$Olorae: It just hurts so good!

I was referring to being beat on by fettered souls, but my alliance just dropped with laughter.
