I didn't play any other MMO's but didn't "ding" come from the sound another game made when you leveled?

That 'ding' thing is correct.
We also get a sfx (and gfx) effect when leveling, just more elaborate than a ding nowadays. :)

Well, it could be researched quickly (http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?Acronym=WOOT&p=dict) but I believe many of those are backwards acronyms.
