I havent played Lineage 2 for a very long time and I was curious if someone could tell me what a good starting class would be for a new player? Also any tips or tricks about the game to make leveling faster would be great as well. Thanks!
If your primary goal is to level faster I think you'll get rather burned out quickly. Focus on having fun, making contacts and parties, get involved in the politics or roleplay... if you focos on your level, you already lost yourself and probably won't enjoy the game :)

Well I do plan on enjoying myself, but I was curious which one had an upper edge on when I did decide to level up. I do plan on making friends and getting invovled I just need to decide on the class I wish to play. I also don't understand this sub class thing.
Try to have fun first before you think about leveling fast.
The grind will get you in the end anyway.
Then whatever you have been able to built up in role-playing/friends/clan/alliy etc over the time you played will be the soul factor for you to continue.
Leveling fast is allways possible but with the leveling at a normal pace you will learn more about the place called Lineage. You will have the knowledge of mob locations etc. And you get to see the world 1 on 1.
Well I'd say the upper edge is either 1) a pure soloer who can stand decimating mobs on hours upon end by himself just to level fast, like a good mana management nuker like a spellhowler or perhaps a necromancer. A summoner could work as well although they're slower to level technically, but the fact they solo without hindrance cuts down on "downtime" looking for parties and so on. 2) getting involved in a tight group of friends to party with every night, it doesn't matter what class you are, really.
But if you look around, you will see the overpowerment whines about archers and nukers, which are pretty much true as well... but it depends on your mindset. I for one cannot stand the thought of taking a spellhowler, having a second account recharger and then spend the rest of my life soloing that thing just "because it's fast and efficient".. because - it's got to be so utterly boring I'd bite my own head off in a few days! =D
The importance as the above poster says is that you're having fun and can feel the teamwork needed to enjoy this game. The grind will disappear and you will focus on completely different goals, and the levels will come without you noticing them. That's the way to "grind" this game imo. Most people go by the "me and my buffbot SE and utter boredom"-route though ;p
Do you want to be a supporting class? Heal or buff or a little of both?
Do you want to be a vital part of most parties, but perhaps not so good on your own?
Do you want to be a melee character, or a ranged character - magic or physical?
Do you, like me, have a tendency to prefer any character as long as they RUN fast, even on their own? (elven fighter it is then).
I mean, there's a lot of info we need to give you a good suggestion, as it depends on your tastes in gameplay.
As to tips and tricks, the first character you level past 5 (on each server) will be your "newbie character". This character reaps an enourmous amount of extra benefits all the way until he/she is level 25. These benefits, newbie benefits, like truly awesome buffs and a gear exchange program, makes the process of getting to 20+, where life usually starts, much much easier. If you want to change character after you have taken one past level 5, it'll be a bit harder... so it's a good idea to settle for something right away...
in a nutshell: Mages are the most efficient soloers, altho you will always need rest while soloing at some point. Archers are pretty efficient soloers, but will need groups later on (which they will find easily). Swordsigers and bladedancers will find parties more easily than anyone else. but they're rather gimped for solo and pvp purposes compared to mages and archers.
As for the subclass thing, believe me, by the time you get there you'll know all about it.
