CokoBWare asks: "Next Generation is reporting that NC Soft, makers of the beloved City of Heroes, Guild Wars, and other MMOs have announced that they will be incorporating in-game advertising for their MMO Auto Assault, using an ad service from Massive Inc. NC Soft has made no indication that they intend to change their subscription model in light of this new announcement. I wanted to know how other people would feel paying $50US for a game, plus approximately $15/month in subscription fees, and in addition be served with in-game advertising as well? Is this a good trend for subscription-based MMO games of the future? Should gamers pay for the privilege of having to be subjected to in-game advertising on a monthly basis?"

Well, what do you guys think about this possibillity?
Thanks
Matilda
Well, first off, L2 must be "and other mmos"
Secondly.
If I were to play a game that had ingame advertising where it clearly didn't belong (advertisements in a more futuristic landscape make a kind of sense... see Bladerunnner - even though it's scummy to me) I would quit.
I know some people will quit if they add other types of servers or add helmets or capes and some even quit (and came back) when they implemented gameguard.
But being paid for the priviledge to see advertising? Screw that!
if there are a [censored] ton of adds in it, it **** well better be free to play. Thats just my opinion though. And I agree with Sovrath, futuristic games with adds is ok but if a castle has a pepsi machine next to the throne? Hell no.
It's entirely a matter of placement, the BladeRunner example is a good one.
When I think Auto Assault I think Carmageddon. There were lots of ad's on huge buildings in that game and they were all made up and fake. I wouldn't have really cared if they were real products or not.
So if they place it well and it fits the environment based on the art direction of the game then there isn't much problem with it for me.
However, they could do with altering the subscription model in light of the increased advertising revenue.
It would be great if companies would sponsor ingame events for NCSoft, but for Lineage 2 there should never be an advertisement in the game itself. I could live with the events sponsored though.

maybe...they would have to knock some dollars off of the montly fees. I dunno, best way to put adds in a fantasy mmo, if it has to be done would be the load screen in my opinion.

nah, not knock money off monthly fees, but more money into providing events.
What ammuses me most, is that a professional Ad-Service company, that is NOT under direct control of NCsoft might accidently accept advertisements, that are violating NCsofts own EULA.
I know that we on the german fansite are using Ad-Serve for Banner and scyscraper advertising and one morning, I was choking on my coffee, when I saw an ad for an infamous adena selling company. Took me half a day, to get rid of that thing, as we cannot directly influence, what kind of ads the banners are displaying.
The Ad-Serve company was believing, that this kind of Lineage2 'advertisement' was especially suited for our site and of course that 3-letter company was not stating, that they were breaking the EULA.
Also, professsional ad-serve companies tend to accept ads from other games too. Can you imagine an in-game ad in Lineage2 that is promoting Evernull2 or World of Smurfcraft ?
If there would be a loading screen with a ton of ads on it, I wouldn't care (not the IN-GAME loading for teleporting !), but in the game, there is no space for advertisments.
Ok OK Imagine this, there is a Pepsi Vending machine on the steps in Grian and some AW is MB DB BS the machine caus his Adena was eaten by the machine.... /GM
Back in the day Korea had something where while out hunting you had a chance to get a coke bottle top or something of that nature, by turning it in you could redeem it for a free coke at a store.
I have seen this coming for a long time, and I think if done with in taste and respect to the mmo enviroment/artwork it could work. If I do start seeing that stuff in mmo's I better see a reduced subscription fee to go along with it, or some type of compensation. Hook me up with the goods!
Balis
PS. Do you remember when a certain MMO had /pizzahut HAHA I have to admit it was a hoot, and cool to see.
Well, what do you guys think about this possibillity?
**** I miss Fanta news.
I think it's a good idea, if it's done right, of course.
If they use the money earned from product placement to finance a dev team, you'll get a better game in the end.
And don't give me that offended virgin argument that you paid to be here and should have no ads. When you go to the movies, you pay, yet just before the movie there are tons of ads...
And how about when you buy a new car and the dealer sticks his dealerships sticker on your NEW car... ROFL I actually specify NO DEALER sticker when I buy new cars...
But being paid for the priviledge to see advertising? Screw that!
Sovrath,
Uhm you have a television right? Probably a cable plug in as well. You pay a lot of money toi see advertising. You buy magazines, newspapers, go to the movie or to a sports event. Everywhere you will meet commercials and you pay to see them.
I would prefer it not to be, but I prefer many things that will never be true

Ahh... but there are differences.
Yes, I do have a Television (but not cable) and a few choice shows I watch. But I don't pay for that. I recognize that the advertisements pay for the shows. And when the ads come on I mute the TV.
It's a valid point you make though. Even when you go to the movies you now get ads. I have written to several sources voicing my displeasure regarding that.
However, I don't have to play an online game. So, if they incorporate advertisements in the game then I will just cancel.
I also don't believe in billboards. I only read game magazines as I really don't like magazines in general.
I will say that I don't mind advertising that makes sense such as, moviephone or Fandango ads prior to the movie. Those are services that make sense.
I ignore the intel ad that is on the L2 startup though I will acknowledge that I "know" "it's there.
I suppose we are all responsible in some way for how we allow these things into our lives.
Oh, and because of ads I don't listen to radio anymore. They ruin the songs and to me the music is sacred.
Hmmm... maybe there is a reason I'm still single
The day they take in ads...will be the down fall of the company. For the whole reason and i can see it now.
Ads in place for aden inc...
Not really, a company can pick and choose the advertisement they want in game. Things like ("I"n "G"ame "E"conemy) would not be allowed by NCsoft. This happens all the time in advertisment, I think there was a self imposed ban on hard liqure(sp) ads in TV advertisment from the networks.
I just see this as the next progress in advertisment. It has been reported that TV viewership amoung 16 to 35 year olds have drop like rocks, because a majority of them are online doing other things besides watching TV. NCsoft and the Marketing Guru's at certain large corporations would be stupid not to think of ways to advertise to this prime market age.
I for one hope we can get something out of the deal if NCsoft puts advertising into the games. Free drink here and there, lower subscription fees, ect......
It will be fun to see where NCsoft takes it.
I am waiting for Antharis to fly accross the sky with a banner "Red Bull, it gives you wings! " :)
I wouldnt mind having to pay same subscription and have ads in game as well. Theincreased revenue could be used for more in game events, more gms, better support, an overall better game
at same price. I do have to agree tho that it would need to stay within reasonable bounds. System messages like this raid was brought to you by coca-cola wouldnt bother me none or events with coca-cola caps. I mean het who doesnt like free stuff?
I don't care if it cuts costs or gives the game more production money, however they want to justify. Its an RPG, R P G. The minute i see adds for Kia's or Pepsi in my game screen, im outa here lol
Bah, I really wouldn't care too much. However the product does make a difference. I don't want to see a message every time I use a gatekeeper reminding me that Tampax is the favorite tampon of Aden gatekeepers.
In-game adds wont ever happen to lineage2 or lineage3, i can guarentee you, it may popup on the web site but never will we see it in-game, unless it was a special event, where everyone gets tango'd.
Still, like it or not. The day will come when we have advertisments in our game. It is inevitable. Think about it, you have a clear welldefined group of people spending 30+ hours a week on a single medium. Most advertisers want acces to that medium.
In 10 years, we wont know any better. Just like on TV, we all know that when the commercials start it is time to get to the bathroom.

Now that I see the pictures I so remember seeing those on the Korean l2 site. I think thats really cool, but to bad L2 is not as big here in the US and EU to warrent coke to do that for us.
Someone put RustNC on this and get him to get us some goodies. We like free goodies.
