Hey everyone. I just picked up Lineage II to give it a shot in hopes it will help me get over my World of Warcraft addiction... After 18 months of WoW, and 3 max level characters, I'm dissatisfied with the lack of advancement and the almost non-existant leveling curve. L2 looked like there was almost infinite room for advancement... or at least much more than there was in WoW. I have a few questions about the game if anybody has a second to help me out. :) Currently I have a 11 DE Fighter on Erica but before I go any farther I just wanted to get the experts' opinions.
1. Are all the servers the same age? I'd like to start on a relatively non-developed server if possible.
2. I accidentally used some scroll and it teleported me to some crazy town and I don't know how to get back to the starting DE city... I think I'm in Giran and I'm just wondering if there's a fast way to get back to the DE Village area.
Also, are there any classes that just absolutely suck (eg. EverQuest Ranger or WoW Paladin) so I know what to avoid?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to L2, Maleficient!
I first started back in August 2004, but FFXI and then Wow (and my friends who play those games) dragged me away. But there really is something about L2 that appeals (to some of us anyway) more than any other current game. Anyway, having said that, my main is only level 29, so I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert on anything... except being a newbie. XD
However, in a way, that puts me in a decent spot to advise you, because its not all that far from where you are to where I am. So, I'll try.
First off, you asked about servers. I have only tried Gustin, Sieghardt and Lionna. Sieg was the most 'advanced' server that I tried, in that its older than the others I tried. However, I like Lionna the most. Just a feel thing. Overall, the servers are identical, with the only difference being in the players you can meet in them. Just like in WoW. It seems like all of the servers are pretty well populated, so I really don't think you can go wrong. However, I guess I'll throw in a rec for Lionna, since I like it so much.
The biggest thing on getting started is money (adena). It can be very hard to come by. The cost for gear escalates very quickly, to the point where it can seem 'impossible' that you will ever have good gear. However, they put a system in this game a while ago called 'the manor system.' Look it up. Learn it. Live it. Used well, it is a killer way to earn serious money in this game while you level.
In a nutshell it boils down to buying 'seeds' from manor npcs's (which are located in most towns). You then 'plant' these seeds in appropriate level monsters, and then 'harvest' the seeds after you kill the monster. The harvest is a sort of fruit. When you've planted your seeds and harvested your fruits you return to the manor npc and turn in your fruits and collect your reward: some sort of material (varnish, coal, animal bones, etc.). The reward is tied to the fruit you harvest and is set by the owners of the castle that runs that manor. Then, you take your materials to a busy marketplace (Giran is in striking distance of Dion, so its good for this) and set up a personal shop to sell or look for good deals in shops that are already set up and sell to them. Rinse, respeat, become a millionaire... eventually. Used correctly (studying what things cost versus your rewards versus market price for the rewards) you can make a ton of adena. But, it takes time. However, the alternative, to not use the manor system, is -- imho -- much slower without some sort of other angle (like paying a dwarf).
Other than that, since you're already a mmo-vet you don't need a ton of advice, pro'lly. Careful who you pick fights with or even who you defend yourself against. It is not always cowardly to run if you are overmatched. Early on, when you can afford it, pick up a couple of haste potions and hold on to them for emergencies.
If you stick with being a dark elf (good choice! *ahem, says the dark elf*) then early on run the spore quest over and over and over. That earns good adena early on. By your teens you should be running spores + orc amulets + zombie parts + spider venom sacs all the time. Sort of get in this hypnotic pattern of collecting the items for these repeatable quests, keeping your eyes peeled for pk'ers and potential new friends alike, and then work to the point where you can handle the early roooms in SoDA (aka School of the Dark Arts). There's a repeatable bone quest you will add to your quest lineup that helps your income, plus a one-time quest in there that awards very serious adena (for early levels, close to 100k if I remember correctly) plus some other fun/rewarding things to do in there. Plus, SoDA is just so freakin' cool the first few times you go in there. So... well, I won't spoil it for you, visit it yourself when you're ready (prolly around your mid-teens in groups, late-teens solo).
Actually, if you like your character and you like Erica and all that, just keep going. The one thing that is most important in this game, which took me forever to 'get' is that you need to focus. It's not like WoW were you can get 40+ (even on a fresh server without tweaks) in a couple weeks. Everything in L2 takes time. So, pick a character you really like (appearance-wise), make sure it leads down a class path that truly interests you, and then stick with it. It gets more and more rewarding the further you go. I'm still a total newbie, but at level 29 I've experienced just enough to feel how much more interesting my capabilities are then when I was 19 or 9. From talking to players of SK's (the class I'm heading towards, at level 40) I know it gets even better!
Oh, and I guess the most obvious advice is to read all you can to research your class and the areas you hunt in. Ignore the jaded posters (every single game has them, why they even play is beyond me) and focus on the core info and the people that are more upbeat (since they're more fun anyway).
Most of all: HAVE FUN! And, again, Welcome to Lineage 2!
