what pet to get?

i'm an elf and i'm going either SR or PW. eventually.

i want to get a strider but i don't know if riding it will be worth it to take the stat changes. i mean the speed would be nice but it seems to be too tough to keep it leveled even to me.

the baby pets. i read the FAQs. are there ANY differences to their starting stats? like does the bird have a faster speed, the longhorn being slower, etc.

basically i'm either going hatchling-to-strider or baby pet. what do you guys think would best complement a SR or PW??
Hatchling is good to level with melee. So if you go PW, get the hatchling.

If you just want the strider to ride around, get a twillight. If you want a hunting companion, .. get a wolf.

If you go SR, get the baby pet.
i guess my question about striders was if it was really worth it to level him that high and keep him an even level. can i still attack from a distance with my bow and my patk, etc? is the strider's speed faster than that of an SR? i don't think i'd get just a strider to ride, but to ride into like battle and stuff. i don't know.

i played an EE and had a strider but it just made your speed 180 and didn't do anything else. and i had a lvl 46 wolf that was pretty sweet. but that's cuz i could buff him and heal him. my wolf had like super high mdef too; i don't know if that was like a glitch or a custom armor piece or not.

if i get a baby pet, i would prefer to have the fastest of the pets so he can keep up with me. so does anyone know if there is a difference between their starting stats?
Well, um, look:

Mounting a strider only offers speed- at the expense of unequiping any weapons/shields, and pretty much all your melee skills. The damage output you have while riding a strider is also laughable, since pet SS dont work while you're riding it. So, being mounted on a strider offers fast transportation, and is maybe effective in scouting for enemies.

Striders are very hard to exp, since they dont go well with parties (they seem to get everyone stuck due to size).

Strider speed depends on the char class that's riding it, and you always get a bonus (a PW on a strider will go much faster than an EE on the same for instance).

When a hatchling changes into a strider, base stats and skills dont change significantly, you just get to ride it, and it becomes large and awkward.

Hatchling types:

Twiligt.: This one is weak in both offense and defense. It gets no skills. The upside is it needs far less exp to raise, and consumes very little food. Take this if you want a strider to ride around with.

Star.: This one is relatively strong in defense. It gets a self heal and aura flare<--- and this is the skill you will use to exp it. Recommended for rechargers/nukers that can heal/recharge it.

Wind.: This one is relatively strong in both defense and offense. It gets a stun skill (that rarely lands) and Ultimate defense. This I'd recommend for all mellee classes, since it can assist in fighting with relative ease.

Other pets:

Wolves.: From what I've seen (never owned one) wolves are somewhat like the wind hatchling - they dish out damage and can survive in melee fighting. They start out at lvl 15 tho, and their equipments are much cheaper.

Kookabura/buffalo/cougar.: This is a totally different pet, it just follows you around and heals you for a very small amount of hp. Other than that, any mob can kill it with 1 hit. It also gains exp by draining 10% of yours - doesnt need to kill mobs itself. This is easier to exp with a ranged class (so mobs never get close to it), but you can easily keep it in a safe spot while exping and it'll just lvl up.

In general.: Pets are generally not worth the investment in adena and time to raise, in technical terms. The wolf and wind hatchling will increase the overall damage you deal tho, but decrease the exp you get. (they could prove beneficial for spoil dwarves or seeding chars, due to the increased killing speed).
ok thanks both of you for the surplus of information. i will probably end up getting just a baby pet because i won't be able to heal my pet as a fighter or debuff and reaggro the mobs so my pet will be harder to level solo.

i'm going to go with cougar or longhorn. is there really no stat/heal difference between them?

thanks again guys x)
Nope, although they all start at different levels, for whatever reason. Really strange actually-- one starts at 24, the other 25, and the other 26. Otherwise they are all the same.

I find such pets to be useful in pole parties and for downtime. Perfect for nukers who use Body to Mind.
I'm a level 22 Elven scout I'm wondering which Baby pet is the best for me to use considering I use a bow which is range? And can I buy my pet off of someone who's selling them and use it?
You can buy any pet. If it's named, though, you are stuck with whatever name the person gave it.
Thank you and I'm just wondering being on the Seig serve what the price range is for buying a baby pet off of someone usually is? And if people sell the pet for more if it's not named compared to having a name?
