'Useless' Spells

General Discussion Started Last reply 67 posts
Okay, so I've heard off and on about spells that people feel have no use or were nerfed until they really don't function well. What spells and do you wish you'd never spent SP on.

I'm not talking about spells that have a use at a lower level (like ice bolt and windstrike for healers) but spells that just don't seem to function.

For instance, I've heard there really is no use in spending the SP on Peace and Wind Shackle (other than an agro generator for leveling pets kind of spell) was nerfed bad enough it's not worth casting.

What spells would you say fall into this?
Wind Shackle is a good spell. Not as good as before nerfing, but is still nice to have.
That's good to know. Another good thing would be whether any 'useless' spells actually are useful, like this information.
Charm
I suspect this will depend on your hutning style. When we get used to one skill/spell, we tend to use it a lot and not use the others. Someone else could do fine with the opposite spell set.

I'd love to hear information on how people do find use for some of these spells. I understand that it's relatively easy with the more obvious spells that everyone uses, but for instance the spell Charm or Peace? I've never heard people say those are actually useful.

Is it just that we aren't using them correctly? Or are they really spells that should be revamped?
Surrender to Poison, Curse Poison, Poison Cloud, Curse Chaos.
peace is used by prophets when they get arrgo on them they just peace the mob and it will stop attacking them

charm is just used to waste sp.
I find no real use for SH poison skills (surrender to poison, curse poison, poison cloud). They don't seem to do sufficient dmg to be used as real DoT's like those of OL.
Also, I think Curse Chaos has too weak effect, from description it seems that it would be nice antiarcher/dagger skill but it does not seem to do anything noticeable and zero use for PvE.
I find the psn spells usefull you go down to AL solo and you find farmer parties and when they attack the mob psn it and you get like free exp :)
psn cloud was really usefull way back when to power lvl lowbies you get a bunch of golems and psn cloud them and then the lowbie attack them when they are are 1 hp and they would get full exp.

I've heard that Charm could be used to pull one mob from a group of social (non-aggro) mobs. Cast Charm on the mob, cast self-buff, and the mob will walk to you. Have no idea whether it still works in C4.
peace/requiem/repose, they have some use, but its so enormously situational its not worth the sp (exept for lvl 1 because it looks purty)

serenade of eva.

short range + doesn't work effectively enough to rely on this skill (60% maybe)+ the mobs affected by this skill aggro again anyone who moves or attack... = unusable in parties and solo

serenade of eva.

...is a bot training skill :D
nope.. when you cast serenade of eva the mobs that folowed you just vanish...
they get teleported back to the place they where if it is far away, or they walk back if it was close.
courpse burst... i've used in like once since i first tried it... and only reason i used it was I was mad i wasn't the sleeper so i did it (in an ally party) when all the mobs were slept just to upset the sleeper... we all laughed, but I still didn't get to play sleeper :(

curse dischord/fear/chaos/weakness/disease

none of them are very good, but I use cdl to lvl so i have lots of extra sp... so i sleep people in the arena and overbuff them... that's about it all they are good for...
Most useless spell, surrender to earth.

Second most useless spell, which perhaps whould actually be placed int he most useless spell slot because it prevents NC from ever giving us a useless spell in its stead, is Mana Regeneration.

As for most useless skill, I'd have to go with either charm or that dance which mitigates earth based spells.
Desiese, is worthless now that you can't Debuff RB's any more, cause thats what it was for.

chaos and weakness, are worthless.
their range isn't farenough and cast speed and effect is too weak.

Fear is great, I was useing this with my clan lastnight, Makeing the mobs run away, so funny I laughed my *** off when they ran after a feared mob. This is also a tactic skill, use it on nukeing mobs, and works in PvP on summons.

Corpse burst is a situantion skill, best for 1/2 group mobs, AoE parties; your best bet with it is to nuke a mob then bust it when it dies, works great when you got 2 necros and a scor in party.( festavals is a good place to use this, the rift is not)

One thing I wish is that i could get rid all of my pre 40 skills, at my lvl they do nothing but confuse you when your tring to find a skill you need. only thing I'd keep is my battle heal, self heal, might 1, shield 1, con 2.(these buffs are usefull for olympiad,to make a SA land on you)

Most useless spell, surrender to earth.

i don't know... terrain damge dance is pretty worthless...
Human wizard/sorceror's Aura Bolt and the likes. Unlike the SPS and the SH no overhit. The nuke does less dmg then normal nukes. Not used ever

I'm curious as well. The descriptions are vague and I've no idea what peace really does. Transfers aggro back to tank? Shrinks aggro radius of mob? Last time I tried it, the mob aggroed on me anyway. I never saw any noticable effect.
That's not as useless as us scorcs having surrender to wind with absolutely no wind attacks. I sometimes use aurabolt as a finisher to mobs to help save mp cause it's so cheap. Auraflare is still usefull in pve but dare not even think of using it in pvp now.
Most of the bishops skills apply. Just kidding, a lot of them though.

Requiem - like a silent walk for undead. Since most undead mix in with AGGRO LIVING mobs, I have never use this ever. Other than to dance under it.

Repose - Stops undead from attacking. I've used it a few times, but on a group of mobs it usually fails on a couple and the minute you move or attack the still aggro ones, all the rest re-aggro. Stupid. Also good for dancing.

Peace - never used it, ever.

Hold Undead - fails often even with Bsps, costs A LOT to use, a cute trick but that's about it. Rarely use it.

Vitalize - heals and cures bleed/poison. Very situational, almost never use it. It's rare that someone needs a heal AND something cured.

On the flip size, mass rez is almost never used. Takes a lot of mp, highly situational, short range. But when it works to rez 2+ people at a time, it's the most awesome thing EVER.

Charm

Aye,

I made a Elven Scout and tried my ****est find a purpose to it, but as deaggro skill rarely gets mob off me.
Not sure if these were mentioned, but Surrender to poison seems sort of useless since poison is sort of useless (add that one too).

The higher lvl spells that use seed of wind etc. I've never been in a situation where somebody said "hey... wonder twin powers Activate! Form of a 'bucket'!" I wonder if anyone puts sp into them.

Surrender to Poison, Curse Poison, Poison Cloud, Curse Chaos.

I disagree with Curse chaos, while lvling my warlock even lvl 2 of the skill was useful. Best means to cut damage on my servitor help make mob miss lol
well

I never ever found a use for "Dance Of Protection". Until now I have no clue on how it works, and all the BDs I asked didnt have either. Anyone?

Requiem - like a silent walk for undead. Since most undead mix in with AGGRO LIVING mobs, I have never use this ever. Other than to dance under it. Try it in the rooms around the pytan room if you are racing a group to the kariks.

Repose - Stops undead from attacking. I've used it a few times, but on a group of mobs it usually fails on a couple and the minute you move or attack the still aggro ones, all the rest re-aggro. Stupid. Also good for dancing. Same as above, but best for dancing

Peace - never used it, ever. I have walked from TOI 5th - 11th succesfully alone with this skill. The trick is to separate the aggros all throughout the hallways so they dont socialize when you cast peace on one of them.

Hold Undead - fails often even with Bsps, costs A LOT to use, a cute trick but that's about it. Rarely use it. Great for slow killing parties overwhelmed. Mine works often because I use a high Matck weapon.

Vitalize - heals and cures bleed/poison. Very situational, almost never use it. It's rare that someone needs a heal AND something cured. Purify is better use of mana.

On the flip size, mass rez is almost never used. Takes a lot of mp, highly situational, short range. But when it works to rez 2+ people at a time, it's the most awesome thing EVER. I have rezzed over 20 people at once with a 75% for each of them with mass rez. Learn to use it in pvp and raid bosses that go wrong, or antharas :)

My comments in red ink.
Anthote do my knowledge peace doesn't aggro anything, so it doesn't matter if you peace some mob between alot of other mobs. the duration of peace sucks tho, I found that they grow aggro after a couple of seconds.
We had maybe 4 bishops at our Antharas raid and we were highly sought after in groups not only for the rez, which still had to be in party, but to pick up people with mass rez. Such a sweet skill even if it's rarely used.

I do have a high matk weapon but it still fails now and again. it wouldn't be that big of a deal if it didn't cost close to 200 mp. Or more, I haven't checked it since I upgraded it at 72.

If two mobs are social, peace is the same as sleep on one of them, the other comes running. TOI 9 is horrible for this. However, for group mobs, if you peace the leader, the others will not attack you, assuming you didn't already aggro the whole bunch.

I guess ninja rezzing is an aquired skill :P

Yeah, the nuker seed skills are worthless. 250 mp for each of the 3 nukers to do the amount of damage that one nuker can do with a lot less mp. Not to mention you have to get the seed timing down... It's not like you can just shout out in the middle of a battle "Seed me now!".
Sanctuary and Holy Strike.

actually its alot like that. In our mage grps we have the 2-3 mages set to seed. Its like ok Rdy to seed? on my mark seed
nuke bam. no to useful in pvp but fun to use on raids

I use aura bolt a lot. It does half the damage of a standard nuke and costs half the mp, so i use it - when I need half a nuke :)

When hunting greens, I often have the situation that I can two-shot a mob, but after the first nuke the remaining hp are actually half a prominence or even less. So I use aura bolt to save mp. Works well.

Also, with the aura flare nerf, aura bolt is not that bad in pvp. Because it wasn't nerfed.

My personal most useless skill? Surrender to wind. No idea why sorcerers get it :)

Overall most useless skill has to be the BD dance against terrain damage, though. Especially because of the level you get the skill at. It really is a waste of SP.

serenade of eva.

I disagree with this, although it's not the most useful spell it can be useful. Soloing past Pytan groups (and similar) is much easier, since you only need to cast Serenade and it doesn't aggro the minions. I've found it lands decently on white/yellow monsters with Blessed.

I've also used it once to save a party, admittedly at lower level. In Garden of Eva we had one of the Garden Guard groups spawn on us at a bad time, it happened to aggro me, I run a little way away Serenade and the entire Garden Guard group stays away from us.

Finally, it can be very useful for training, and stopping people from training you. I think I've only had the mobs vanish when using Serenade once, and that was after running the monsters a long, long way.

As for the real worthless skills, I'd say Cubic Mastery2 for Temple Knights. It really does nothing, not even a nice animation :). Oh and charm for the Elven Knight class, a tank class that wants to lose aggro? Kind of strange.

Most useless spell, surrender to earth.

Surrender to earth is useless... Ive heard that sleep is earth based, but since Ive only ever put one lvl on surrender to earth, I havent ever noticed any difference.
But as for Mana Regen... I get an extra 4 mp per tick at 71, from 17 mp to 21 per tick. For soloing its awesome :) It is expensive, and it kind of annoys me that we have to pay so much for it... but you make the cash back if you lvl in the right place. For large raids (especially when you have an ES in party) its great! Try the 70+ version one day with a +MP regen set (Doom, NM) and notice the difference :)

Beat me to it, Serenade isn't useless so much as highly situational. I use it on occasion when i accidentally agro mobs in a group, it useually gets the mobs off me or at least lowers my threat level enough to allow the other group members time enough pull the mobs off me.

now if you want a useless skill try curse weakness ......

curse dischord/fear/chaos/weakness/disease

I'd have to say in pvp Fear works quite well and probably even moreso in Olympiad. It's an instant win vs summoners really and much more useful now that summoners are an actual threat.
No you never make the adena back, because you would earn the same adena drop even if you didn't use mana regeneration, you're drops don't magically get bigger. Now if they did, this might become the most useful spell of all. My personal gripe with this is because its existance prevents spellsingers from ever being given an actual useful mp restoring spell that doesn't require an adena cost. And that is why I hate it. If we didnt' have this, we might instead have actually been given body to mind, or an mp draining spell. Without the spirit ore cost, it still wouldn't be great, but it would be a great deal better. And considering the mp regenerating prowess of spellhowlers and necromancers, removing the spirit ore cost would not imbalance the game to any extent.
You regen mp faster.. so you kill more mobs.. which drop adena. Since Im regening 25% faster with mana regen lvl4 and NM set, I can pretty much kill 25% more mobs given that Im there long enough to make the initial mp bar insignificant. If you find a place with good aden drops, good mats drops, and quest item drops (like blazing swamp up past the tree), you'll at least come close to making back your cash with that 25%... and if you don't.. well at least you made 25% more XP from it.

It can be painful that we dont have body to mind.. but with a good PvE set, its not so bad especially if you can duo with a SE.

But back to the topic.....
Regardless of what above posters have said, Serenade of Eva is a useless skill, IMO. You're a healer, you shouldn't need that skill. It's a waste of mp to cast it. If you're in a party and you catch aggro? Well... I can't remember the last time I caught enough aggro to actually do much damage to me before the tank pulled it off me, but maybe I just party with good tanks, or maybe I just know when NOT to heal, or maybe I keep an eye on where I'm going so I don't pull aggro, or maybe I sleep anything that pops near my group, or maybe all of the above. Why would I ever need that spell? Even in a group without a tank, the puller is usually watching out and can pull a mob off me in an instant. If your party is about to die, why would you risk your time/mp on a spell that *might* not work when you have PR? They gave you that skill for a reason.

I disagree with Mana Regeneration being a useless skill. I use it 24/7 when I solo and I've not found it to be a big drain on my pockets. It helps a lot, along with walking. And what about sorcs? As far as I know (or have been told by sorcs), they only get one level of b2m, back in their 30s and no other mana regen spell after that, so IMO they are worse off than SpSs are. Only SpSs burn through the MP faster, because they cast faster and don't hit as hard.

My number one useless skill(s) would be anything related to Earth - earth guard, surrender to earth, etc.

My second most useless skill(s) would be Serenade of Eva and other skills like it, including some of the Bishop's skills discussed here and Charm.

Charm

Spellsingers aura bold/Aura flare/aura burn does not have overhit either.
And yes it does less damage but it also casts very quickly and aura bolt uses half the mana to do half the damage of aura flare.

Second most useless spell, which perhaps whould actually be placed int he most useless spell slot because it prevents NC from ever giving us a useless spell in its stead, is Mana Regeneration.

I don't level without Using mana regeneration. and i Two box an SE. It increases mana regen by about 30%. I don't see how thats useless.
And i see your point about making the same money using it as not using it. but there comes a point where making that extra xp is worth the extra cost, and when you are in a duo or parties you don't want to be dead weight coz you are running out of mana.

Isn't this the only way to get to one of the dungeon boss's?
The core maybe?

And whoever said curse weakness, It's one of the first debuffs I go for in pvp against any melee class once they are slept. hardly useless.

Lure is lvl 52+ with distance 400. Charm is lvl 20+ with distance 600. And TK has no Lure at all.

its lure that does what he thought charm does

Charm

i used this one alot back in the day...when i had to get past a big red ugly argo...and there was no way i could kill it...

but now...i haven't upgrade that spell since lelve 25 i think

does this work in PvP? cause if it did...i would use it all the time :)

Lure is lvl 52+ with distance 400. Charm is lvl 20+ with distance 600. And TK has no Lure at all.

its lure that does what he thought charm does

The idea was to emulate Lure by using Charm creatively. It was said to work in C1, not sure if it still works.
Yes, you need unlock for the Core, to get to some raid bosses in Devil's isle, as well as raid bosses deep in Garden of Eva.

I'd have to say in pvp Fear works quite well and probably even moreso in Olympiad. It's an instant win vs summoners really and much more useful now that summoners are an actual threat.

It helps but it's far from an instant win. It doesn't last long enough and the summoner can just kite you until it wears off. I had my summon feared many times in the olympiad on PTS and won the battle every time.
Can you use fear of players?
Of course not.
However you can pull out a +16 weapon and S grade armour, give out an almighty BOOM and go charging at someone, 9/10 they will run away in fear.
Drat was hoping you could fear players. It would be so fun to use on those 9 man farming crews.
resist chock, bandage, charm, elemental heal for archer
I dont think people understand how Charm works. Now its not the most used spell but it does have a use and it works EVERY time. Its basically the opposite of Aggression/Hate. A mob starts attacking you and u dont want it you cast it and mob loses interest in you. The most useful I have found this skill was in screwing over KSers back when i was low lvl when it was an issue. A KSer sees you hitting a mob, they come to hit it as well, you cast charm and stop attacking and they catch aggro. Also SR can use it at raids when they catch aggro of the raid boss or minions, they cast Charm and the tank can hate it back easily. Not a great skill by any means but does serve a purpose which people simply don't understand. Agression= + mob aggro, Charm= - mob aggro

resist chock, bandage, charm, elemental heal for archer

Resist Shock works well in PvP, but doesnt help much in PvE
i have debated makeing a ee buffer just for resist shock its ont useless in pvp its a god send if your a mele i mean dark lords i loved when ee's were at buff hill

but useless skill in my mond would have to be corpse plague not fast tneugf casttime to mess up farmers it is a nice high posion but the land rate on it kind of sucks and it means that i the tank have to target a dead mob a fue sec longer witch people hate it wopuld become a greate skill if it just made all corpses around you fume posion and not just the target also if we could use it in pvp

PR man PR

I was joking :p If i knew an EE around my lvl i'd duo with one. I already have haste 2 for my summons, an EE can throw out a few extra buffs. Decrease weight for the tons of ss/bsps/pet ss/pet bsps i need to carry. Resist shock which helps with my 29 con. Plus recharges so i could have soulless out and kill faster and fight higher lvl stuff. and as you said, Pr if there's trouble.

But for a useless skill, i'd have to say soulless's aoe moves. The poison basically has it's damage spread out over a longer period of time so that means people can catch it and cure it before it does any real damage. In aoe groups it won't get enough damage done by the time the nukers fire their aoe's and kill the mobs. And with his corpse burst, well, i can't use it in pvp, and in pve, if one mob is dead, then chances are the others will be too by the time he's done casting.

That and charm, i'm glad i don't have that waste of sp to worry about.

As for the real worthless skills, I'd say Cubic Mastery2 for Temple Knights. It really does nothing, not even a nice animation :). Oh and charm for the Elven Knight class, a tank class that wants to lose aggro? Kind of strange.

Well, all summoners have cubic mastery lvl 2 but no third cubic, but there's still use for it. Just grab a summoner and have him party cubic :D If you get a ps with the Tk then the tk will have aqua, life, and phantom, the ps will have phantom/spark (if all cubes are out ie. pvp). But, if you grab an Es, then the tk will have aqua, life, phantom, the ps will have phantom, spark, aqua, and the es will have phantom, aqua, and life.

Just gotta remember to share :D
