So for the accounts that can't access the system for up to 24 hours is there some type of pro-rated refund? Not that is much or anything but if you make a business decision that disables logins for 2 days, then you should be willing to refund those players.
Their login server is down atm(try pinging it = no success = dooown). And L2 doesnt usually offer refuds >.> 1 day being 0.37$ or something, doesnt matter much for most players.
I think that your not being able to ping it, is the reason for the "expected" problems. I have a feeling they changed the hosting of the server around...because 24 to 48 hours is the time it takes for the "new" address to propagate throughout the internet. If that's the problem, they could tell us that. As far as a rebate is concerned for missed time...just drop a dark crystal helm in my inventory...i'll be happy. :)
All servers are showing light status and I just logged to Teon >.> only 34 members online in ally, so the login server is acting a little strange for most I think.
I'd have to guess you are right maybe some type of DNS change. It does seem very odd though as 1 machine can login while another can not. Both machines on the same network. Mistryl did say she would post when the servers were available so I guess I'll wait on a word from her.
I think NCSoft & my wife have conspired against me...my "honey do" list will take about 24 hours to do...is this just a coincidence? Or are there sinister forces at work here to circumvent my desire to play...?

I can go one step wierder- I've got two accounts, the computers are on the same router, I can login into 1 account on one machine, but *not* on the other machine. The other account doesn't log at all.

She all ready said they were up. Still can't log in....
anyting in /etc/hosts overrides the DNS server. Its actually how the internet operated pre-DNS system. Every machine had to download this hosts file that contained the IP address to hostname mapping of every machine on the internet, so you could type things like www.something.edu. (http://www.something.edu.) As you can imagine, it got pretty out of control, so "domain name service" was developed to replace it. Its basically a giant distributed database. The standard libraries that come with all TCP stacks still look at /etc/hosts first, before going to DNS. You can even use it to play jokes on people n stuff.
To save bandwidth, name servers cache ip->hostname mappings for a period of time, usually 24 hours. So, for example, if authenticate.ncsoft.com was changed from 192.168.0.1 to 10.0.0.10, then it would take about 24 hours for the entire Internet to see that address change. Some people will see it quicker, some people will have to wait the full 24 hours.
Ok, I see the solution and now my problem is that I have no folder for hosts, it asks me what program I want to run to open it with. Please inform me of how to fix this issue.
Might want to come back in a couple days and remove that line (if it doesn't work then, put it back, and wait another couple days), in case they change the DNS stuff again at a later date.
You ever think that maybe by using this fix that you are sending your log in information to someone who is then rerouting your signal to L2 servers? Nice one.
Yeah, keep in mind that this fix might not be completely "safe", considering i got the fix from someone also. You should try from time to time to remove it and connect normally.
It is quite simple to confirm both the network and the server at the other end of an IP address. To spoof this, you would need to do alot better than that.
NcSoft would tend to pull the post too, if they saw it didn't have anything to do with their site or their address pool.
