Hi all - fairly new to game

Hello everyone. As the title states, I am fairly new to the game. I initially bought L2 back in late 2004 and only played the trial period. Was stuck with daoc for the most part. I am trying to decide on what to make, as I want to create a character on this server, however I don't want to waste my novice char bonuses on something I'll never play. I've read through the class descriptions, but they're a little hard to understand - it seems different than daoc was.

I like to play support type chars that heal/buff or add/bring good utility, however these characters are often hard to play without a group or guild of friends to run with. As far as healing/buffing/utility goes, what classes are best at that? Would it be difficult for me to start out as one? I'm drawn towards DE's but of course I'm not fixed on them. I also like to craft, but from what I understand that is strictly a dwarven thing? Melee's are fun, and I generally play a tank type when I do the ****-n-slash but like I said I like the utility type characters more.

Any help figuring this out would be more than appreciated.
Well, its not like u actually think, buffer/healer class players can easilly xp in a group, they cant solo thats all....ppl ussualy take healers in group, they are kinda in a shortage in devianne...so i say u wont have any problems....As to what class to take: her is a short description( my oppinion): HUMANS: Bishop: Best healer of them all, has all to maintain a group alive, good at a raid...| Prophet: : superb buffer, can also assist in combat. no heal :( ...|ELVES: Elven Elders: same as a bishop only a little thoward combat - has some unique buffs ...DARK ELVES: a combination between a prophet and a bishop...prefered class in server,,,weak at combat......thats all i have to say :/ ...Anyway dont forget about Orc Overloards...great support class for clan/alliance buffs, also good at PvP, or WarCryers, good for all partyes....and further more Bladedancers wich have several dances with a great power, same SwordSingers....good in high lvl partyes.....depends on how u like to play...if u like sitting down and waiting for someone to get hurt u take a bishop :/, u like to buff..prophet or whatever ....its all up to u.....Have Funn with whatever u choose, all classes have a purpose in this game...
as fozen so elegantly put it, the bladedancer class (dark elf fighter in dualswords) is a great party assiting member except he cannot heal. only provide 2 minute shots of extremely potent buffs that will help the party fight.

likewise a swordsinger, but they are those frooty light elfs that nobody can stomach playing.

but if you prefer something that is all assist and not combattive, then you will want a Shillien Elder (dark elf mystic after lvl 40) who can buff up a party for 20 mins and recharge mana for party members at the same time.

the other healer types (humanand elf) are a hybrid of each other and can be difficult to use if you arent used to it.

if the combat line is our thing i would also suggest an Orc Overlord or warcrier.

these orcs have special buffs that also last 20 minutes but look much more cool when they are cast. as one of these you will run out of MP very fast if you arent careful and try to do too many things at once (like buffing and aoe rooting or w/e).

but PLEASE dont make a gimpy light elf. they are teh sux.
I'm always so confused as to why so many people think support classes are unable to solo. Granted, in the higher lvls it is true that solo for a support class is less than a thrill, but its doable. I'm currently lvling up a bish2be and have spent a majority of my lvling time on my own. Granted, a duo is better (how I lvl'd the prophet) but not the only way you can lvl up. I'm currently hitting 30 and still able to solo, and have places in mind to solo through my 40s. Another option for these classes is the fantastic root-n-shoot. A bow and root is your friend.......if you root the right mobs :)

If you are looking for a good healer/buffer combination I'd suggest the dark elf (to be Shilien Elder). A great amount of prophet buffs are purchasable in general stores (mutter grumble) or were handed out to other classes (sigh) but an SE has very desirable buffs and heals too boot. Beyond all of that, they come with recharge. Ahhhh <3 mp.
bah, what am i saying? Overlor da best support class...can solo great ( duo OL rox ). Clans want you, mobs hate you :p.
Great buffs for you or all clan/ally , gteat m def , great p def with soul guard on, alot of hp/cp, super dupper steal essence magic skill.....Just get a pole, 20 mobs after you, do seal of binding (hold), burn them and curse them with whatever seal u want and ...well...immagine what u can do with a pole and 20 mobs with 1 hp each. Btw, i warn you, dont hit soul guard, u become almost invincible to melee...just stay away from geting stunnd :):)......one of best PvP classes to . Dont **** with the OL
