Hi all - fairly new to game

Hello everyone. As the title states, I am fairly new to the game. I initially bought L2 back in late 2004 and only played the trial period. Was stuck with daoc for the most part. I am trying to decide on what to make, as I want to create a character on a central time zone type server, however I don't want to waste my novice char bonuses on something I'll never play. I've read through the class descriptions, but they're a little hard to understand - it seems different than daoc was.

I like to play support type chars that heal/buff or add/bring good utility, however these characters are often hard to play without a group or guild of friends to run with. As far as healing/buffing/utility goes, what classes are best at that? Would it be difficult for me to start out as one? I'm drawn towards DE's but of course I'm not fixed on them. I also like to craft, but from what I understand that is strictly a dwarven thing? Melee's are fun, and I generally play a tank type when I do the ****-n-slash but like I said I like the utility type characters more.

Any help figuring this out would be more than appreciated.
What did you play in DAOC? i can help if you were an Albion or a midgard. If you played Hibs you probably want a nuker, either necro or SH.

play Shilden Elder or bladedancer, they are heal/buff and add/bring good utility , VERY EASY to find party + they are very cheap to play, so u can save $$$ for gears!

BD u can play to 60 with brig and dual saber (I DID)
SE top no grade mage wep and spam bless spirit shot no grade when u're healing :) to 60
One important difference to DAoC.... you don't have a character that is 'the' healer and 'the' buffer combined. What you get is a spectrum. Bishops can heal better than anyone, but they have very weak buffs, for the most part. Prophets and Warcryers have awesome buffs, but their heals are weak. Shillien Elders have really good heals and some really good buffs and they are probably closest to what you are thinking of from DAoC. Bladedancers and Swordsingers are buffer/fighters. Elven Elders are very fast casting healers with some good situational buffs. They also have the awesome Party Return (eventually an instant party teleport, but you don't get that till very late) and Overlords are clan/alliance buffers vital in sieges.

A lot of it is going to depend on what you want to do. Are you interested in PvE mostly or PvP? Do you want the kind of all around utility that the Orc Warcryer and Shaman have or do you really love healing? Do you detest buffing or do you feel naked without the best buffs possible? Do you want to be sought after for parties are are you a rebel who likes characters few play?

Answer some of that and you are closer to picking your character.
I am a big Large scale PvP'er - I don't care for the 1 on 1 pvp so much. I enjoy PvE but at end game, pvp is what I desire. Bringing utility to a group that if they didn't have before, they would have been subpar, but with my utility they are 10x better type thing. Buffing means more than heals to me, as with buffs you increase the amount of damage going out and damage being absorbed by your team, at least traditionally speaking - not sure if that's how it works here. With buffs you decrease the amount of heals needed, at leaste thats the mindset I have towards it. I prefer to play in groups - solo play is too hard most of the time and ridiculously slow.

Right now I've made a female DE Mystic - where to go from there I'm not sure. Not even sure if thats the type of char I should have started with, but I can always change servers and switch chars.
If you don't mind not playing a DE, you should really try an orc mystic, they sound like the class for you.
yeah orc mystics are highly desired buffers and great fighters as well.
Overlord buffing 200+ people is a cool sight. And then the Overlord CP healing those same people, **** :P
What would be a good server to create an orc mystic on then? Right now I have novice chars on Devianne(sp) and Gustin? I think.

Thanks
Lionna. Keep away from Devianne and Teon for sure. Would love to say why but it will end up in a deleted post again....
Reading the post I replied to, it sounds like a Bladedancer would be good for you.

Usually people will have Shillien Elder/Warcrier/prophet buffs, which are very good. Now add BD dances (buffs), and your party members will just rip through mobs - and other players (depending on their buffs). You get good dances for both nukers and fighters, and they're very sought after. Though archer groups specifically would probably take a swordsinger over a bladedancer. That's the only downside I can think of. Oh, and you need to be using duals to dance. From C grade and up, you can apply Special Abilities to your weapon. All weapons but duals need an SA crystal, but duals you need to enchant to +4 to get the SA. Enchanting to +3 is safe, but +4 and up has a 33% risk of failing (breaking).
Of course you could use any weapon (but you only get masteries for duals), and "just" put the duals on every 2-3(?) minutes when you have to dance. That's the poor man's way out :p

Reading over the thread I think a Blade Dancer or Overlord is the direction you want to go, so start a DE fighter or Orc mystic. But really, saying you enjoy large-scale PvP, I would suggest Overlord. ;)

And...some people may disagree >.>, but I would suggest coming to Bartz. :D One of the most populated servers (if not THE most), so you'll have lots of company and I personally love seeing new players. :)

I'm sure you'd find a good number of players on Lionna and other servers too, but I'm biased. :o

<3 Bartz
I tried to play an orc mystic but didn't get very far. They seem incredibly weak, having to stop to heal very often after fights. Though I only got to lvl 5, am I just doing something wrong or what? Should I be looking to get some certain item to save for to make life easier for me? I will also make an orc mystic > Overlord on bartz tonight.
orc mystics are supposed to be the hardest character to get to 20 simply because SP wise it's hard and as a mystic you don't get your first skills till 7. You're using soulcry right? It will help a bit at least until you get actual spells.
The orc mystic is the most painfull to level till you get to level 7 where you learn your first skill.... And untill you at least hit level 7 you need to use soulcry to boost your P atk.

So basiclly you quit your orc to soon.

Check your private messages, I sent ya something. :)
I figured I did as much. I'm gonna stick with it this time around and get to 7 then hopefully 14. Finally learned what spirit shots were about, so maybe those will help this time around.

edit:

Wow yea - using soul cry + soul shots makes this so much easier. I think I was just making newbie mistakes yesterday making matters harder on myself. Need to save some coin up to buy some better gear for defense and I will be rtg I think.
When you hit level 7, the first skill you should get, is Life Drain. It pretty much eliminates downtime if you're using shots.
Woot! I did the quest to get to the Giran village and got back to the orc town after finishing the quest. While I was there, I asked a few folks some questions on overlords and what not. Someone was nice enough to give me some fist things and some armor and 100k adena. They told me I could use it on soulshot so I bought 5k of them. Now Im just rippin through some wolves trying to get to lvl 7 :) Then I can get life drain!
At 20 you become a shaman and start getting buffs and whatnot. you have 2 choices at 40

Warcrier-single target dots and debuffs casts awesome party buffs.

overlord- PBAOE debuffs and whatnot, also get soulguard same as soulcry but for def. buffs affect all ally members within range.
So wait, Warcrier has the better party buffs? I thought it was Overlord? Now I am confused:(

Warcryer buffs affect you, your pet and your party. You get them later than single target buffers though.

Overlord buffs affect you and any Alliance or Clan mates nearby. Buffs come even later than Warcryers. (Like L56 later...)

Over all, both get a Acumen spell. Warcryers buffs are very much melee related though. Crit buffs and VR for example.

Overlord buffs are a mixed bag. About the only thing we get the Warcryers don't is the Shield block buff and Zerk. Otherwise we just get the basic defensive buffs. Might/Shield/Evasion/Mdef/Accuracy. We get some CP heals VERY LATE though and our Seals cover the rest.

(I'm not even gonna go into the third class change buffs for either....)
Overlords are awesome for nuker parties (within your alliance of course) because of bless shield (to a lesser degree, but good to have), acumen and zerk (along with SE's empower). They're good for other types of parties too, but nuker parties are what I'm most familiar with. They get the basic buffs like might and shield + guidance (accuracy) and a few others I can't remember right now.

Warcriers get crit buffs, guidance, vampiric rage, acumen, reflect damage and of course might and shield. So Warcriers are best in fighter parties.
dosent OLs get empower at 78 or something? ^^
So one caters to melee's and the other to nukers? Man that makes it difficult for me. I like to help both. I guess, for me, what affects large scale pvp more? That is, who does most fighting in raids and such? is it possible for one group to need buffs more so than the other? If not, then I'll just flip a coin, hehe.
OLs are awesome for big alliances for most activites

imagine 200 ppl or more getting healed at same time by 1 person (OL)

OL can buff a whole alliance with most needed buffs at same time..

OL can HP and CP heal whole alliance (only OL can CP heal with skill)

OL have awesome debuffs and mass root... rock in PvP..

the disadvantage is that the WC is much easier to lvl, since they get groups easier
OL it is then :)
Good luck leveling your overlord :D

People say they have a hard time leveling, so make sure you get into a good clan :)
