How stupid are these scammers

General Discussion Started Last reply 46 posts
Had to post this because I thought it was rather funny last night. My husband and I both play L2. We sit not 6 feet from each other when we are playing. Recently someone has been trying to scam clan members by creating toons with slight name differences and trying to get clannies to pass off weapons or adena. They taunt those they are pretending to be and claim to know everything about us and that they will scam us all. Well last nigth they tried it again, but this dumb *** pm's hubby's toon saying "Quick I need 10mil". Pretending to be one of my toons. Well they obviously know nothing about us if they are trying to scam my husband with one of my toon names. When this happened I was playing a different toon and was in party with hubby so I log real quick and log back on as the toon they are pretending to be and pm them asking them how stupid are they. When I pm'd them they logged faster than you could blink your eyes.
Erm, great? Also its not a new recent trick, this older then SirE.
Well. The fact, that such scammers are still around and that there is a "stop scamming !" thread every few weeks, makes me wonder, if the thread title shouldn't rather be "How stupid are these people, falling for scams".

Open your eyes = Problem solved.

it isn't the scammers tht are stupid... it is the countless people that they have scammed that are stupid.
IMO the scammers are actually the intelligent ones, they get items for free, how good is that? They expolit peoples stupidity, thats how all great business men work.

Also its not a new recent trick, this older then SirE.

BURN!

Erm, great? Also its not a new recent trick, this older then SirE.

You missed her point. The scammers had said they knew everything about them and yet they didn't know a very fundamental piece of information.

They get it to work just once and they are set. And it works more often then that.

The scammers were stupid to try that on you, and the countless ones that approach me at the racetrack claiming to be my boxed buffer.

But any scam that works, cannot be counted as stupid.

:D no love for the people scammed. But yea, you get scammed you deserve it. It happens everyday to people with no common sense. Sad, but true.
Its not a scam if you warn the person before hand.
I like scammers, i may seem to be defending them, but you must think, who is really the stupid one.
If i am 100% honest then i will have to admitt haveing scammed before, but now i dont bother as i want to keep my nose clean.
Not sure why they would know you live together, just because they say they know everything. It's just a scam attempt, I've had people try that on me multiple times. They just pick someone in your clan, party, friends maybe, anyone they think might work. Go see the player guides, I already put this in the common scams guide.

Erm, great? Also its not a new recent trick, this older then SirE.

Get off my lawn, punk.

In my day, we had to scam, up hill in the snow, on punch cards.

Well the stupid is the once that trust you! Guess its real hard making friends with one and then steal there stuff when they nicely let you trie them out.... yes SPS they are the stupid once, but you are the [removed] that for some reason thinks that stealing from a person over the internet is any diffrent then stealing there stuff in real life.

I've said it before... it is just createive shopping.
Stealing in real life is illegal, stealing in-game is not. It it was illegal i wouldnt ever have scammed anyone, i play by the rules.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It is impossible to steal in L2 (short of an exploit that I don't know about). That is all.

It's a game and one should be able to play it with smile on your face not have to look over your shoulders for scammers all the time, People play for fun and when you get scammed theres a real chance that the joy go away and you leave.

People are having a soccer game in the afternoone and having a laugh and along comes SPS...
"hi can i join your game? "
"Sure you can.."
They start to play togheter and as soon as SPS get a pass by the ball he pickes it up.. And start to laugh.
"Neener Neener! hahahaha! I got you fotball... I cant belive you trusted me"
And runs away with the fotball. Laughing in to the sunset leaving all the others with no fotball and they have to go home.

I'll accept trades all day long and still not lose gear...

How about this? I'll leave Elro logged on planted in Giran for several days and everyone is free to try and "steal" his gear (such as it is).

Here's the thing, I don't worry about scammers. I play simply for fun. I make sure I read player shops but never, ever worry about "accidently" giving my stuff away to the wrong person because everyone on the server is the wrong person.

Can I hold your stuff then? :)

I only fell for a scam once. I was extremely tired, it was very very late. And I was going to log but decided to buy a little inf ore to round out what I had so I could do the quest. I wasn't paying attention and fell for the lava stone/inf ore switcharoo.

I didn't yell, moan, scream rant or rave (though my rants get raves ;) ) I merely laughed and vowed to be more careful.

Now, this wasn't me giving away an A grade weapon or whatever.

Point being is that people need to take responsibility for themselves. I feel that is one of the problems wiht our society today. People are lazy or not careful and when things go wrong they look for others to blame.

Should NC have separate graphics for every item in the game? Sure. However, each items is named. Though it brings up an interesting thought about how visually oriented and dependant we really are.

So just be careful. Don't trade with people you don't know, who don't give you the password (which is what my old clan used to have) or who are not on Vent or TS as you are trading with them. Read before you click "yes". I imagine a trick people use would be to ask for a trade but to have an accomplice pm you to take your eye away from the window. They then cancel the trade, put up a new trade window but with an item that "looks" like what you were about to buy.

Does it suck if you get scammed? sure. Are you a lesser person. Hardly. But we all need to take our lives by the horns, step up to the plate and "be adults".

It very well may be that such a "dog eat dog" game is not for everyone. No shame in that. We will all move on eventually.

100% Agree. and you only have your self to blame. the thing is that i dont think you can justify scamming another person just becuase it's a game. People tend to forget that there is still a real life person behind the screen that has put alot of time to this character and play the game as way to relax, having fun etc.

Lava stones are worth more than inf ore atm on bartz. So who scammed who? SCAMMER!
some guy lost a +10 halberd on gustin to a scammer

Hmmmm... interesting!

Personally I don't believe that people should attempt to scam other players. But the game allows it so one could say that they are playing by the rules. Just like it is an open pvp system and you can pk anyone your little heart desires.

I suppose the only thing to say is that you have to know when enough is enough. But as SPS said, the game allows it and he played by the rules. One might not like that type of gameplay but can you really say a player is a bad player for "playing and evil character". Of course it is hard to catch people who scam as they can delete and then make more toons.
...did anyone get that Fionnabhair wasn't complaining, merely laughing at an overconfident/incompetent scammer's expense?

Barefoot!

My favorite attempt to scam me happened quite awhile ago, when I was still in D grade.

Aaronn, in dion, kept telling me that he was my clan leader's alt and he wanted to borrow my gear.. just for a minute.. to try it on.

I took all my gear off.. opened the trade window, placed all my gear in it.. and clicked cancel. Seven times.

He told me to drop it on the ground.. I said.. "Why.. No!! I wouldn't want to lose it!"

This went on several more times, until I finally asked how much he made by scamming ^^
Hardly a week goes by that i don't overhear someone telling another player some version of.........

"c'mon. I just wanna see what I look like with that/your weapon"

Evidently it lives on and on because it still works from time to time.

It would seem if anyone played long enough to earn the millions of dollars even for top d-grade--that the gear/weapon would be precious enough after all that effort to acquire that no one would drop it or share it or let it out of there control for a second.
Me personaly I have learned my lesson about scamms. I got hit hard with the email scam. But up to that point I had defened myself against all others( Name, shop, etc. etc.).

But like you all have said in a round about way. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT.

You dont steal a football unless you have a death wish.

Only bcoz you can't log out irl.
There is something different about this scam that bothers me more than any other scam. It is someone you know.

All the who's right or wrong, dumb or smart doesn't matter. This scam more, often than not, involves someone exploiting a relationship.

Example: My clannies Joe and billiousdfkljhr have become good friends, they live in the same state and I think Joe let's billiousdfkljhr use his old C grade weapon. They have befriended me as we have leveled together. If I ask Joe to use his old weapon, he'll want it back. So since I'm such an ingenious professional gamer, I'm going to log onto an alt with a similar name to billiousdfkljhr and scam Joe.

billiousbfkljhr: Joe can I use that yaksa again?
Joe: Sure bill . . . . .

Joe isn't a dumb asss, (even tho he feels like one) He's just un-expecting of a thieving piece of [removed], who has [removed] for a personality.

Please don't bypass the profanity filter. - M
That's a very sad but true fact. The scammer has to know something about you in the first place to scam you with the let me burrow item or some adena. People like that are the reason I rather solo and say fu*k to parties. Another [censored] thing I noticed is people making raid parties where things drop by turn and right before the raid boss dies, some [censored] drops arrows or something. they got it all thought out. the order in which the party is set, when items are picked up, those that were not in on this trick get the arrows, while others get the good drops. whenever i see this i drop my own crap on the ground to mess em up :D, but its still sad that people have to resort to this and mess up friendships and trust. Ah well, no one said things were fair. People like that should drop dead. I will be gald to help them achieve to drop dead :p
It a common trick for scammers, you should verify that it the person you know by ventrilo or clan chat.
Only a ****** asking for trouble creates a name like : billiousdfkljhr
>> they got it all thought out. the order in which the party is set, when items are picked >>up, those that were not in on this trick get the arrows, while others get the good drops

All your fault for flawed 'by turn' loot.
Btw, it's relately easy to implement warning msg (could be turned off) if:
a close mathcing name existing in your clan or friend list sends you a private message. It's less than a day work if NCSoft wishes to do it.
Those arrows you find on the floor come from the RB's minions, they always drop arrows if you watch closely. Also your group is stupid if they are on by turn, it should be on random or finder keepers, then the loot is split equally at the end.

Erm, great? Also its not a new recent trick, this older then SirE.

Heh =P

There will always be scams, large and small. Whether its SSD announced for 11 per selling at 111 per or whatever, it's like the Kitten said: keep your eyes open and don't be too quick to click!

Also your group is stupid if they are on by turn, it should be on random or finder keepers, then the loot is split equally at the end.

SPS, you would get alot more christmas cards if you stopped expressing your "opinion" as an assault.

Why does this not surprise me?

Scamming is not against the rules, it's just an [censored] thing to do. Taking advantage of other people's stupidity isn't funny or cool. You might find that people who do it in business frequently end up losing in the long run. (Enron anyone??)

People who do it in a game are just tools. Exhibit A QFT.

Taking advantage of other people's stupidity isn't funny or cool. You might find that people who do it in business frequently end up losing in the long run. (Enron anyone??)

Are you referring to scamming or taking advantage of the customer's stupidity here? It's a big difference. "Scamming" is usually fraud, while "taking advantage of the customer's stupidity" is just good business.

Also, remember, for each Enron there's a Halliburton.

LOL. I see it every day. I'm the IT guy for a group of car dealerships.

And yup, many a stupid freaking customer walks through the door and drives off the lot.

I've also seen what happens if they go too far in "servicing" the customer...
Since I was looking up Groucho Marx quotes, I found some fitting ones for this discussion:

The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made.

There's one way to find out if a man is honest - ask him. If he says, "Yes," you know he is a crook.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.
