Recently I went to Dark Elf village and decided that I wanted to make a pk character to cleanse the place. (and no more about that because, uh... "that's not what this thread is about" ;) ;)
So I make a Light Elf Soon to be scout. lvl it to 20, and go to speak with the head of the guild in Light Elf Village.
He tells me I have to go to gludio and speak with Grandmaster Rains.
I do this, and he essentially tells me that I need to speak with Master Reisa. No problem, annoying but she is right across the room.
So I go to Master Reisa and she tells me that I should GO TO LIGHT ELF VILLAGE to help a guard find a missing peson.
Perhaps many of you have had different quests or different experiences, but it seems to me that any quest that I take that doesn't require me to collect x amount of something usually entails me running around only to be sent elsewhere, only to be sent to another elsewhere.
Why couldn't the quest have started in Light Elf Village and the Grandmaster there told me to help find the missing person. Certainly it isn't a stretch of the imagination to assume that the grandmaster of Light elf village would know about a missing guard.
Seriously NC. This is not good. you really need to simplify your quests. At least make it so they don't entail running around only to then be sent to run around!
sorry for the moaning, I usually don't do this but I couldn't help myself.
However, I must admit, I don't remember during any of the two or three times I've run the LE scout quest do I remember having to return to the LE village. o_O
But yes, the whole "running" thing is lame - just another failed attempt at making more "in depth quest". It is also why I much prefer the killing and gambling kind.
On doing my 40 lvl quest (if that is what you would like to call it) I found myself ranting at a player over the idiocy that the quest actually puts you through. It has seemed to em that after playing L2 for almost a year, everything is geared and guided towards two things.
Weeding out the weaklings - by this I mean those impatient or used to a SWG or WoW type leveling system, which will net you high levels will very little or no effort.
PvP - If you even slightly pretend that this game can offer you anything other than the ability to kill another player as your final goal, you are mistaken about Lineage 2. Even thier ads on thier pamphlets tout L2 as the most hardcore pvp game you will find., or something to that effect.
So yeah Sov, I agree. The quests are pointless, boring, under-thought, and just more proof that you are playing a game determined, to determine what kind of player you are.
Hmmm, I on the other hand had a totally different experience. I made a scout too just for pking but right after reaching 20 I gave up on the idea :). But I was surprized how fast the quest was compared to a shaman or other mages.
Yah, thats the one you have to wade throught two sets of white aggro mobs... Then take on the messenger and his 6 buddies 3 times. And do that at a level of 14

lol.. well.. at least that seems to have some action. This scout quest (and granted... I really haven't done anything other than to be sent to gludio only to then be sent back) just started off ridiculous.
Makes me nervous about the 3rd class change quests.
The class change quests are horrible, and I have done more of them than probably the vast majority of players in the game, even Jute (who loves doing them) had to admit defeat when comparing how many class change quests we had done.
And I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate them, hated them ever since I did the first Spellhowler class change quest back when there was no prima, no fan site guides and the quest dialogue was buggy (and even some places missing) as hell.
i just finished the path of the scavenger quest . . .had to find the wandering Toma 3 times (grrrr) then go to Gludin. Run from Gludin to DeathPass and back.
Though runing around was a bit of a pain . .I did get to see alot of nice scenary which was a welcome change from dwarf village and the coal mine :)
I would like to respectfully disagree with the OP.
I like the class change quests as they are. The effort and time that has to go into them makes the class change an accomplishment to be noted. IF the quests were quick and easy then the class change would mean less than it does.
IF you get into the game/quest stories, then the travelling is fun, too.
However, if all you are about is getting to high levels as quickly as you can then I think you are missing out on a lot of the best parts of the game (what's the rush, anyhow?) and you have noone but yourself to blame if you find yourself dissatisfied with L2. The content and fun is built into the game, but so many people rush past it in the pointless effort to become uber.
I should have mentioned in my post that I actually like many of the quests. Some of them are poorly written and do not have a very consistent story, but many of them really give a lot of insight into the world.
Granted, that's not necessarily going to be what many L2 players want. But, for instance, after having done a lot of the Light Elf quests and many Dark Elf quests, you get an interesting picture of the two races. Light Elves have a lot of deep dark secrets....
I agree with Jute.
Quests in L2 aren't the most interesting sort when it comes to doing them. But all the text and information you can pull out of them is amazing. Aside from new pet quests (>.<) they all have very nice stories behind them.
Guess i'm basically with Jute as well.
I agree a lot with his original premise....running from point a to point b doesn't make the quest either more difficult or more meaningful. It simply takes time and money.
Finding Toma 3 times to be a scavenger isn't "a great story line"--it is silly. It is tedious. That quest starts with his stupid sister sending you 5 times (or more) to collect fees for her at the grocery store. Just running back and forth around town till Toma spawns.
I liked the first class change quest for human knight for some reason so it seems possible to make them worthwhile.
I must be missing something in the definition of 'meaningful quest'---going from Giran to talk to Gludin to talk to Talking Island to talk to Giran only to be sent to someplace else (TO TALK) may heighten tedium to the level of being a determinant of persistence---but it doesn't add any meaning or other value to the story imo.
The level 20 quest to change to Pallus Knight has a great story as does the Dark Wizard quest, but you have to read the dialog. If you are not interested in that stuff, then it's going to seem mostly pointless.
I remember that from a long while ago (my second 1st class change quest).
I camped out in the dungeon and begged the first people I saw to help me. They graciously led me to the mobs I needed and helped me kill them.
I would like to respectfully disagree with the OP.

I will 100% agree with you. The class change quests should always be challenging. No argument there.
But my real complaint is that there is no real logic. It's run here and run there when in some cases there was no reason to.
In this scout quest, why am I sent to gludio, only to be told to go across the room, only to be told I need to go back to Light elf village? That very paragraph, to me, summarizes the L2 quests.
Instead, I should have been sent to the appropriate person in Light Elf Village immediately. Then, if I need to go to Gludio, my Quest should either make me engage something around Gludio OR send me to another completely different area where I will actually engage in the quest.
For instance.
Let's say I end up in Gludio. The quest giver could very well say "you must go to the Blazing swamp, there you will find a chest by the destroyed statue of 'insert name here'. Within the chest is another, smaller, statue. Please bring it to me."
Now, as we all know, Blazing swamp isn't a place for a lvl 20. But, if planned properly, what it accomplishes is sending me on a journey (which is ok... don't mind a scenic journey) to an area where the developers have fewer mobs. Maybe even have some guard patroling the area and the future scout must wait for the appropriate time. Sure, it's dangerous but with an eye to balance it can be done.
Then come back. Makes sense (or change the scenario as you like)
But to send someone to a person in a city, to then be told to go to someone in the same room who tells you to go back to where you came from?
I think what they intended with the run here run there quests, is that along the way you would stop and kill a few baddies, hence giving you more xp and sp as opposed to just completing a quest only. Unfortunately, I don't think they took into the account that most people just want to quest to get the quest done.
