Well if you know about OLs now, you will know that they are a Alliance project. It takes a good Alliance to lvl one up. And with the nerfs to AOE it is even hard to lvl one. I don't see anything changing in the future.
Overlords are like warsmiths and bishops. Everyone likes an OL only under some, very specific circumstances. For Overlords, its ally raids, and PvP. However, overlords dont offer as much to a party as other classes do, so be ready to be shut out of parties, and expect many groups to be "full sorry" or "only need dd's" when you are looking for one. If you decide to take the path of an overlord, you will be an underdog, but with those rare, glorious moments in which you will make a real difference.
actually a well build overlord provides not even that bad DD if he toggles soulcry, as their strength aint as low as a pure mage. and sleep and some seals provide for a pretty safe enviroment to hunt in. its just a shame dont realise it. or people might not even believe me when i say it :p bit i know my friend whos a warcryer outdmges even "the" melee DDs who are set up rather noobish ":p
Ol's are awesome for mass PVE, I own the rift with my OL and empower. AOE silence, root and hp drain. what DD can do that? With dual tsu*sls +4, theres nothing wrong with 100 per atk. For soloing my OL has gotten tough at my current lvl of 58, I can't kill medusas in apostate yet, without extended down time and the mobs in front are getting to be too low. OL's are a great class for any group anywhere
On the topic, What can happen that's bad for the OL? the drain get's nerfed? it's good but not that good. AOE's they stick for pve but not that great in pvp. I see them staying the same.
I love OLs for PVE, Ols and Melee aoe is great. Winter/AOE dots. It is just too bad that they are so rare.
People also complain about how hard it is to lvl a dwarf... I don't see how any class is harder or easier to lvl, (besides mages, However since they can solo soo well most of them suck at partying, so there are negative effects even for mages).
I mainly determine who I group with, by how well people play their classes, not by what class they are. If you are a smart player, you will get groups.

mages duo and trio quite well, unless its a sps/sh duo in which case the spellsinger will have too much downtime
OL can solo fairly well with buffs but they obviously benefit more from "the perfect aoe group" something which isnt as common since c4
