Silly question: Helmets?

Player Questions Started Last reply 29 posts
I take it headgear is visually non-existant and there's nothing I can do about it save to shake my fist ineffectually at the game's designers?
for some reason.. alot of people have a very very very hard time imagining good looking helmet designs for characters....

and seem to think every helmet will look like a tin can around someones head completely blocking there hair/face/whatever...

imo, they gotta really think outside the box.

Yes, helmet should be visually included, and if someone has a problem with it, just disable helmets from showing up either via client side/server side... or both...

ding ding.. problem solved, everyone happy, things looks perfect for everyone!

Are those the same people that had a very hard time imagining good-looking heavy armor for male Light Elves too :p?

Well, if you consider sporting huge Shoulder Pads "Good-Looking"........

I think that the general idea is rooted deep, deep in the wee levels of a toon.

When a level 1-10 kills a mob, occasionaly, they get a drop of the Cloth Cap, that on the ground looks exactly like a cap, how it looks on the icon when you equip it.

Any other time or for any other head gear that drops, you just get a brown bag labeled "Item", that from afar may be a helmet, or coal, or varnish, or medal, or a bunch of other things..... :p

See where I'm going with this?

no friggn idea

anyone ever play fable?
that game had some cool helmets ^^
I have no trouble imagining **** helmets.

I do, however, have no problem imagining good heavy armour for elves, light armour for human mystics (HELLO at the guys :o ) and so on either.

Meaning: It's not that we believe good helmets can not be made. It's that we know they will not be made after looking at hero, noblesse and castle circlets.

I'm all for a pretty circlet for Mielle, in silver and blue to go with her Avadon Robes.

On the other hand - how many nukers with archer subclass or vice versa that share the same helmet between main and sub will be happy to have to unseal it and buy a new one? For that matter, is increasing the demand for A Grade helmets really the right thing to do?
They have it set up this way in Guild Wars. In your inventory, there is the option to hide or show the helmet. I like it a lot and so did a lot of other people when they impelmented it.

Sometimes I just feel like having my helmet showing and others I just hide it. Works great and looks great too.

It's that we know they will not be made after looking at hero, noblesse and castle circlets.

point.

but we can still dreaming of a way to have circlets diplayed over the helmet :P
i'd like the show/hide tick as well... free to choose, no complains (at least at 80% -there will be always someone who will complain just for the sound of his voice...)^___^
I can't really imagine good looking helmets in L2.

It feels like the walls of this box are closing in on me. o.O
think about an ancient greek helmet, with some fantasy decorations on it and a crown on top of it for caslte lords, then call it full plate helmet, for example... i think it won't look so bad :) and if you still don't like how your char look, untick the "show helmet" box and you're fine! ^_^ *ah, better i wake up and stop dreaming* :P
Two options - one to turn off viewing helmets altogether, and one to turn of display of my own helmet to other people, would be sweet.

And then you'd still be unsealing A Grade helmets to a set, without the ability to reseal. Would YOU want to fork over 100million twice if it made you look a bit prettier? :p

ya gotta admit DC heavy on LE male is **** right **** ^.^
hehe,
i think options to show the effects of helmets, color of armor etc would help to have more difference in how toons looks.

Honnest, how many times didn't you see your twin brother or sister running next to you?

More difference in toon appearences pls

nosy
I've actually never seen a second Mielle in game - similar, yes, same, no. :D

Armour colour choices would be cool if it only affected a few parts and there was a limited palette. I shudder to think what some people in GW were running around in. x.x

This is the first time that I actually understood your position on this.

They have it set up this way in Guild Wars. In your inventory, there is the option to hide or show the helmet.

Works the same way in EQ2 as I recall.
Heh, glad I could clarify it then. I never understood why people wanted to spend so much money for the chance to look like a dork. :)

Then again, I have delusions of circlets and bandanas myself. I just don't think NCSoft would do well by it if they did introduce these things.

One man's "dorky" is another man's "Sweet!" - besides which, it can (and has elsewhere) be implemented in such a way as one doesn't *have* to see the helmet if it clashes with one's sense of style and panache.
Well if I have to spend 150mil for a helmet it would be nice to show it off.
I can't imagine pretty well seeing human girl in Demon set with shiny silver bucket on her head.
And where would I put my kitty ears?
Helmets would be OK for heavy armour wearers though.
I would like to point out again that anything in game that looks even remotely like a helmet (castle wearer/noblesse/hero circlet) looks utterly ******ed.

So while I would be all for it (with both checkboxes) if it weren't for the money and if it weren't NCSoft designing this, I'm not.

And Kruken, is your visual gratification worth charging an extra 150mil to all people sharing a helmet between sets? Is it worth making helmets more expensive after unsealing?

And as pointed out in the last post: What about levels 1-52, where a helmet would suddenly make you look horribly ugly, but circlets are tough to come by?

I disagree. I've seen NPCs in the beginning towns with headgear I'd love my character to have.

Also, IMO the only checkbox you should get should apply to your own character's helmet visibility. You shouldn't get to dictate other characters' appearances.
If I don't want to see others in ungodly ugly helmets, that should be my visual right. I already have to suffer party masks, squeaky shoes and bunny ears, don't make me deal with even more ugly accessories.

NPCs are modelled differently than PCs, so you can't really compare them - you remember the clipping on dark elf female hair type A and how they fixed that? I don't want to know what they would do to make helmets "fit" elven ears or long elven hair.

about same in WoW too

just that there the option is under "interface"
The designs could easily be applied, however. Hair isn't really an issue for most helmets, as it just gets tucked in. Ears that large would necessarily stick out it seems. Not really a problem.

No more than it should be my visual right to see all the stupid looking happy little elves as smurfs. Actually, that sounds like a plan. Where's my Smurf checkbox?

You don't get to decide whether you see the rest of their armor, or what their character looks like. There's no reason you should get to choose how their heads appear to you, either. The extent of your control in such matters should apply only to your own character.
Yes, the reason is that the helmets weren't implemented thus far because people would think they're too ugly - and that still holds. ;) I'm in the favourised group here.

And which headgear exactly are you talking about? Greenis' cap for example is cool (and might make a cool circlet), but if you put that on a dwarf, her hair will be hidden (that's a no-no, since helmets are supposed to make us MORE not LESS individual if they are put in) at worst or redone at best.

The same goes for circlets: How would YOU implement a circlet over dark elf female hairstyle F (or G? The last one) without making it look awkward, considering hse already HAS her hair done up with a circlet?

And, again, if I want my character to be ugly, that's my business. Ugly is better. Just because you want me to look pretty doesn't mean I should. That way lies madness.

Like any other piece of armor, helmets aren't necessarily supposed to make us look any more or less unique. Of course, with only 4-6 hairstyles, replacing the base hairstyles with an array of helmets/circlets (some of which might have their own hairstyle) actually increases variety rather than diminishes it.

In the first Dwarven town, either the Newbie Guide or the Adventure Guild guy is wearing a cool but simple helm I wouldn't mind having.

The Orc Chief standing on those stairs just inside the first building of the beginning orc town (I think he gives you the Rakeclaw Imp quest but I forget his name) is wearing a cool orcish helm.

Several of the Dark Elf sentries wandering around are wearing wicked headgear.

And then there's the fisherman's hat...

And that's just in the beginning. I'm sure if I get farther in there'll be more NPCs with even cooler headgear.
AGREED. The Oren circlet for example, is ugly as sin, the nobless circlet is really stupid... in fact the only crown that looks decent is castle owner and hero.

Yet somehow NPC's (elven GK) have really nice head gear....
people in this thread still thinking about tin can head and doubling up on circlets.

if a character is already using a circlet in there hair, then applying a helmet/circlet that would somewhat double up on it's appears would NOT happen, but it would meerly replace the already excisting one with a slight modification to make it a little more unique.

Once again i must suggest, quit thinking about how it'll make people look god awfully ugly, start thinking of ways to make it god awfully slick/sweet/BEAutiful.

No one ever made a good decision on something by thinking in the negative aspect at all times. It's both pointless and rather useless to try.
