Ok, now this question will be unbelievably lame
What's the deal with shields? Recently I spared enough to buy a plate shield and throw away my old bone one. I equpped it and... nothing happened... Why there wasn't any change to my p.def? Isn't p.def from shield added to my own when I'm wearing it?
Shields do not add anything to your statistics as they are based on luck. From time to time your shield will prevent you from receiving the full hit the mob or person gives you...depending on the defence rate that is shield-specific.
Actually I don't think it's based on luck. It's based on your dex. The higher it is, the more the shield blocks. I have seen a SK with a doom set, who +'ed his dex to 5, and he was blocking like 75% of the shots he was receiving. It was quite nice :). Of course the doom set adds to the block rate, but still dex is very important. Bless the shield also adds to the block rate significantly.
Shields will become far more important in C5 as it is said that the block rate of magic will be greatly increased (I never blocked a single nuke with my shield ever :( so far). We have to wait and see exactly how important they will be. I hope they block magic at the same rate they block physical attacks :D. Hello paladins. Root the mages, and now block their magic :p. Woot!
Dex affect it, but extreaaaaaaam little, You won't notice anything at all incresing Dex.
Anyhow every class have 20% shield block towards melee attack ( arrows it's almost the double not sure how much but it's higher )
Then thers armors who add to it, this armors add it as an + so doom armor you have 45% and with an EE you can have as high as 95% with almost any class. But yeah you truly need the buffs + armors befor you truly see a difference at the shield block.
Also the P.def on the shield on an block become basicly your chars P.def + shield P.def on shield blocks.
The basics of shield effects are:
1. Shields add their p.def value to your overall p.def on a succesfull shield defence.
2. Base chance of defending with a shield is 20% (allegedly doubled vs arrows) based on C1 info;
3. Each level of bless shield added the following mods as at C2:
Bless Shield 1 = +30% shield block rate
Bless Shield 2 = +40% shield block rate
Bless Shield 3 = +50% shield block rate
4. Each level of Knight Shield Mastery adds the following as at C2:
SM1 - 30%
SM2 - 20%
SM3 - 15%
SM4 - 15%
5. Dex affects the block rate on the basis of the race/class bonus which you get by virtue of your choice of race.(in effect since Prelude/C1). The mods for increasing your dex beyond baseline were not covered when the info was initially released. The algorithms for the bonuses based off stat increases with tats have only been eluded to on various forums post C3 release.
6. The effects of guard stance and shield fortress on block rate have never been quantified to my knowledge.
7. The EE buff advanced block doubles the effectiveness of the shield p.def value upon a successful block.
8. Critical shield block reduce damage taken to 1 from a single hit.
9. Block rate is affected significantly by level differences. It used to be quantified as [your level -11] expressed as a %, not sure if this still applies but suffice to say its perceptible in PvE against mobs which are much higher level than your knight.
10. Two handed weapons were meant to bypass shields but I am unsure whether this is the case as the shield defence message is still coming up when defending against an opponent armed with a 2h weapon. I don't know whether this is due to the message reporting erroneously or whether this is simply not the case anymore and shield simply defend equally well against all weapons.
11. Shields are only effective from your frontal arc spanning roughly 90-120 degrees from your facing. Higher level knights are able to obtain 360 degree shield defence skills.
12. Various armour sets will improve your shield defence rate once you have the full set and in B and A grade unseal your set.
The values are
+5% for FP armour in C grade
+24% for Avadon and Doom in B grade
+18% for Dark Crystal in A grade
Not sure on S grade heavy set at this stage, I saw the S grade sets detailed somewhere but couldn't find the info to post here, I'm sure someone will find it tho.

Most characters that are kinda slow or need the extra bit of protection from magical hits or any hits use shields! a PS is common to use a shield in PVP b/c it gives them a little bit more of protection well their servitor takes most of the hits ando ther people like SE or Prophets can use a shield as well for a similar reason! Sheild will help ya out depending more on what class you are and which direction in your second class change you went :) If your an archer then a shield wont really be as much of a use to you b/c you will most likely be using your bow!
ok in the first few replies they said dex does nothing. I'm a TK, up'd my DEX, and I have not failed a block, ever. So DEX is indeed a huge factor in the sheild department, no matter waht your class is. (I have 40 DEX, btw)
Shields are so underrated that its actually quite scary. If you think shield suck do one thing. Look at the pdef of your main piece of armor, then look at the pdef of your shield, lol. Now you cannot tell me you would fight without your main breastplate or full body armor.
