New player and interface question

Hello

I'm new to L2 (lvl 5) and was wondering if i picked a decent class for PvE and PvP. I chose a DE fighter with the intention of being a Shillien Knight (sp). I'm interested in also going for a Hell Knight or maybe a Spell Howler. I know I should mess around with each to see what I like but at what point do I really get a taste of what the classes have to offer? Lvl 25?

On another note, is there a true widescreen mode for this? I'm using a 24" widescreen and when I change resolutions the chatbox moves to the center of the screen. I know I can move other parts of the interface but I can't seem to find how to move the chat box. Also, I have a pretty beastly computer and in a higher resolution this games framerate really seems to suffer. Is it always like that? Yes, I have most, but not all, setting turned up but i'm running 3 or 4x the reccomended requirements for the game.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
Hello and Welcome!

The graphics kind of chug at weird places, especially when crossing invisible borders or when at an area with a large view range, unfortunately. I assume you do have the "Widescreen" video option checked?

As far as your class, just keep in mind that only your first char per server that reaches Lvl 5 (i think) gets the Newbie Buffs. Beyond that, though, it's pretty quick to get to Lvl 20 if you want to get there to start getting a feel for a particular class. Definitely nothing wrong with playing a few chars at first and just see which one you gravitate to.

Good luck and have fun!
Until Chronicle 5 reaches us, and most likely even after....Nukers and Archers are the 'uber' levelers and PvP'ers.

(Course they cost an arm and a leg....but so does every char choice if your a new player.)

You get up to 7 chars per account, so test each one a bit to see which you like the most...and even try some 'gimpier' chars, you might like those more.

The first levels come easier one you get some good equipment to hand around, so its not too hard without taking a long time to do so. (In L2 time anyway O_o; )
about the widesceen video option....i totally don't see on one T_T

If archers and nukers are "uber" to people not want other classes in parties or raids later on. I mean, I assume you need tanks and some straight damage dealers as well as ranged damage and buffers. Has anyone had a lot of fun with a Hell Knight or Shillien Knight? If so can someone tell me what it's like at mid levels with those classes? I have played FFXI for a long time and I like melee classes that have some worth or melee/small caster like a Dark Knight.

Thank You
Well, you see party usualy only needs one tank. One or two healer/buffers (it depends), then a blade dancer/sword singer are also good. Rest are DD's. Mele, mages are more often found soloing.
Same mostly goes for raid parties. Exept there are much more nukers then mele dd's.

Well hell, ANY class can be a fun class played by a person who doesn't mind being less than a solo leveling madman....but if you want to avoid being a greasy stain in PVP 9 times out of ten, in under 5 seconds, your gonna play a Nuker or a Archer.

If you want an idea how the 'upper levels' stand out...check out the battle tournament replay files.

Now Chronicle 5 is promising all sorts of changes, (Not the least being some boosts to tanks.) so don't think any choices you make now will remain valid in the future.

But yeah, melee is gimp right now for raids/pvp/fast leveling.
(Although I find the mage playstyle to boring to play as a main for long periods of time.)

And since you don't seem to be that focused on being 'uber' at pvp, I suggest finding a clan or group of people who could care less about 'perfect group's and just play to have fun.
SK imo is a wicked PVP tank and fairly good at PvE they just need to be played right: with lower HP than other tanks your gona have to focus on kiting if possible and making the most of your magic skills, I have a 52SK that I love, and I also have a 55Gladiator which I love (more for pvp than than PvE) as for starting the best pvp'r or w/e that ya SH would be a great nuker class with most dmg output atm (SPS has fastest casting which some ppl prefer) Iv also got a HE 69 and she can Hit hard!~ archers and nukers are pretty much the boss's of c4 >> anyhow SK = wicked and is a great hate tank early on: later on is a wicked tool for pvp and pve (they have great defence blocking capabilitys)~ more to say too but im off-->
I got my DE SK up to !) tonight...about to go to the SODA to try and get the items needed for my weapon. I hope I can solo that part. Man, armor is pricey in this game heheh. I think I may stick with SK for a while. I am interested in seeing what a Human Dark avenger and then Hell knight is like. I haven't found much about them anywhere.

Is ther really a widescreen option? And can I move the chatbox in a higher res...I cant seem to find a "handle" on it.

Thank you for the encouraging words so far. I'm determined to get somewhere in this game and actually see other people in the game lol.

ANy more info is always welcome ^^ sorry for typos ...its 3:45am ; ;

An SK is imo a very reliable fighter which provides interesting game-play, it will never be the uber-class but has enough depth to get yourself to high level fairly without boredom.

Everybody and their sister plays a DA, cause they are fairly simple, good tanks (because of the panther) and stand very well in PvP. In fighter melee terms they are a sweet but costly class.

Hell Knigh? Do you mean Temple Knight? Elves are very agile and have good running speed but they dont hit very hard and are pretty weak in P Def.

Temple Knights doesn't have any less P.Def than other Tanks  (And they have best shield block rate among tanks because of high dex.)
But yes, they don't hit hard and they run fast.

I'm sorry if I made a mistake, but I do know that at same lvl I concentrate on the TK for heals and not on the other Tanks/DD's...dunno the exact reason for that though.

PvP wise, I respect SK's, good class with a few dirty tricks up their sleeves. Other tanks are just for PvE Imo.
You've had some good advice here on stuff, so I'll only chime in on the graphics.

My boyfriend just recently gave me a really nice computer and for the first time ever I turned up the Graphics settings. We noticed something odd though. If we have Reflections on, it gets really choppy if I point to a direction with water (even if it's in the distance and I can't actually see it, such as the moats around castles, etc.). If we turn them off, it's great. Dunno why it does that, but we've tried all combinations on the card and that's the ONLY setting that makes a difference.

Reflections are flaky on mine as well (Radeon 9800 Pro). It looks beautiful for a while but does slow things down a bit. If I play for very long, it starts freaking out on some things; Ol Mahums are the worst. They start looking like porcupines... Most of the time I have to leave it off unless I want a pretty screen shot. It's a shame because the water looks so much more pretty with it on.
I'm running a Radeon 9800 pro as well. I'll try no reflections.

Can I move the chatbox? I see no handle on it....

Is there a "true" widescreen mode?

Thanks for all the replys everyone.
Hell Knight is on the L2 site under class transfers for humans. It's after DA. Although I have seen a differentnam at every site I have been too. So I really have no idea what it is 0.o

I'm on the server Devionne (sp) with my DE SK to be. My name is Xuul. If anyone is on the same server feel free to say hi. I would love to know there are more people in this game.

They should really make a reason for people to come back to starting cities later on. Because seeing higher lvl players really makes you want to get up there.

thanks!!

Ah, you'll find most people don't know the final class transfer name since those were just added and, really, since there's no branching at the third transfer it's just a name change. The class, at least of those I have chatted with, are still defined by their lvl 40 class name.
Hmm... I checked and I didn't see a Widescreen check this time. I must be thinking of EVE -- too many games!

Definitely try setitng Reflections to None. I made that change a bit ago and noticed a huge increase in smoothness. I have all quality settings maxed, AA on 2X, Reflections on None and Glow on GlowB, I get pretty nice smoothness from my AGP card.
For the Widescreen problem, First, i'd play with the Refresh rate a bit just to see, sometimes the window oreintation changes. I'd also try it in Window Mode (Alt+Enter) and then change the Resolution until you get one that works for you. Keep in mind, you may be able to set to a resolution in Window Mode that doesn't fit your screen entirely but has the chatbox in the correct place, and then stretch the window to fit your monitor.

Hope that helps, If not, I cannot offer a refund.
cool cool. I appreciate everyone's input on all this. I just got my lvl 10 weapon and am not sure where to go now. I guess i just do quests and grind?

I see a lot of people saying to make a dwarf alt to craft...is that a time sink or not? I don't have tons of time to play so I'm not sure if that would benefit me or hinder my main toon progress.

Also...mages can wield real weapons in this game [censored] ..finally a game where the mage doesnt have to use a staff or something. Maybe I should have gone Nuker rather than SK ..hmmm..

This game is DESIGNED around "TEH GRIND"!

You don't have to let that be the only reason to play the game though. Set yourself a goal and then work towards that goal. Explore the world a bit. Plan for your future equipment...maybe get equipment to try other characters. Find another person online and chat. Use that to explore various clans...see which ones are recruiting and perhaps join up. Sometimes, just watching and listening to the trash talk in a place like the race track arena or around Dion is fun in itself.

Most people have dwarf alts to make money. Most don't make a crafter, instead making a spoiler to get materials to sell. (A Crafter needs to be pretty high level to make good money at this point in the games life.) And making money in this game is hard. So even if your not making an alt to do it, grinding cash on your main is a time sink in itself.

Nukers can *carry* the weapons...but none of them *fight* with them! Mage use weapons which enhance their *magic* capabilites. Special Abilites (SA), Shot usage and availability determine which mages choose.

NO pure nuker EVER uses their weapon in melee to fight mobs as anything other than to assist the real melee mobs to finish a mob, as a way to save MP when the mob is almost dead. (Or to wake someone up who has been slept.) Using a weapon to melee a mob solo is a fast way for a nuker to die. And if your not a Orc Mystic, wacking the mobs instead of casting is a good way to get booted from a party as everyone else wonders WTF is wrong with you.

About the only time your nukes will not be your main attack is if you are silenced....in which case your in BIG trouble if you don't have a party.
k, here's another question

is it worth it to get a wolf?

seems fun

I think you answered your own question. If you want one, get it! Get it early, though. I got one but was too high level and so couldn't level him (I soaked up all his XP) so now I'll use him on an alt one of these days.
the game doesn't have true widescreen, but the chat box should remain where it is... try going into the game options and INITIALIZING the interface after you've setup your resolution..

@ 3840x1024 or 2560x1600 or 7680x1600, the only problems are that the ZOOM feature has a fixed setting, the wider your Field of view, the less you can zoom out, so... 2560x1600 isn't to bad, but 3840x1024 or 7680x1600 = only seeing the crack of your toon.

Only solution is to modify a specific file which is against the ELUA agreement.

What's left? Fire off a few emails to tech support and ncsoft requesting the zoom be fixed for widescreens

I currently run 3 19" normal monitors in tri monitor mode. This gives me 3840x1024. With the Dell 30" by itself, i run 2560x1600 which is a true widescreen, running 3 of them however produces a 7680x1600 resolution which is Super Widescreen.

Widescreen vs super widescreen, well....

this is the monitors i'm currently running.. and that's an actual view of what i see..

wow...my 24" ws seems silly now lol

thanks for the replies
if you are looking for a class that can tank and use nukes, dark avenger (and thus hell knight) is not really it. the only "nuke" they get is drain life, their real power comes from summons. as for shilen howlers, they are too weak to fight mobs in close range after the first class change (up until lvl 20 for a nuker i always use a fighter weapon since at that level the M. Att isnt that much different and you save mp by finishing off the last 5hp of the mob with a real weapon). shilien knight, on the other hand, is the only true tank to get nukes. they have a summon that can paralyze enemies (para lasts about 2 minutes) which allows them the chance of winning some 1vs1 PvPs. blade dancer doesnt get any nukes at higher levels (unless you count aoe poison), they mostly support and help other classes do more damage. something you may want to consider is overlord or warcryer. warcryer gets party buffs which also work when soloing. both classes get a very powerful nuke called steal essence. they cast slow but that can be changes with tattoos and armor bonuses...and also, in heavy armor they can tank. the overlord is great in PvP, their CP heal is awesome, and they have sleep and root in an area of effect. the orc mystic is the ideal cross between mage and tank, that is, if you can get past the green skin and slow run speed.
i think i may make an orc caster alt. i've been thinking about it. I made an orc fighter to start on the road to Destroyer...might as well mess with a orc mystic too.

thanks
