Gladiator vrs. Warlord

How are these classes in game? I read what they are supposed to do on paper, but how are they in game? How does each solo, group, pvp, and seige? What type of armor should you wear for each, heavy or light?
I've little to no personal experience with these chars, but I've picked up a few things over the 2 years I've been playing :>

Gladiator is a 1v1 specialist. Means all his attacks are focused on one target, with high damage. I know he has one or two AoE's but aren't really very strong, not many use them. Most (sensible) glads use duals, and focus on their skills to deal major damage bursts. There are two main builds, speed/strength-glad and hp-glad. I can't tell who is best, you ahve to figure out what you like best. Glad does decent damage with just hitting too. In PvE you'd like to hit only one mob at a time, you're a decent DD, if you're a speed/strengh build. HP-build is mainly for PVP (+con dyes and hp-duals).

Warlords are masters with the polearm, hitting numerous targets at once and have some nice skills for AoE, like AoE stun that can be quite annoying. For PvE you want to fight many mobs at once, to maximize XP per hour and cost per xp. Polearm groups ROCK!

Both of these classes can be HP-monsters with good defence, most go heavy, but light armor can be good if you're higher level than your enemies/monsters.
Thanks for your reply. So knowing that you can only compete with your main class and not a subclass to become a Hero; a Gladiator will be my best shot, if becoming a Hero was my goal?

It doesn't really matter if you want to become a hero. Half of the competition is fighting within your own class. If you are a gladiator, you'll be fighting other gladiators. If you are a warlord, then you'll fight other warlords. Gladiators do a bit better in PVP as both gladiators and warlords have stun, but gladiators attacks are specialized for the most part against 1 target. Warlords are better group players as they can attack multiple mobs at once. For both classes there is the choice of str/dex vs con. For PVP you want to maximize your health, and for PVM you want to go for str, then a little bit of dex.

I personally have a gladiator, which is great for farming the mannor system. I have a good amount of $ as I have a high level mage, so as a gladiator, I can tell you soloing is easy through at least the mid 40's. All I know about warlords is that it is fun as hell to have good buffs, VR and be whacking away at 8+ enemies at once. The XP is amazing if you duo with a good SE, but XP is still decent for gladiators. I think gladiators will fare much better in siege and almost any pvp as they attack faster and it is hard to find enemies grouped, thus excluding the advantage that warlords get with polearms. As far as armor goes, it doesn't make a difference for gladiators or warlords. For C grade, plated leather gives good +str, if you can afford it. Otherwise, comp armor or Full Plate work well. In B grade, use Doom for PVP, and BW for PVM. For A grade, Tallum or Majestic make great PVM and Nightmare is what you want for pvp. Good luck, whichever you pick.
Ah memories....I remember running into this same decision a while back and it was a huge headache. I was REALLY torn between the two. I leveled my warrior mostly solo with an ELS but also had a glaive for those occassions that I found a group or SE to duo with in the Catacombs. I love taking on a group of mobs all at once with a pole arm and that is why I ALMOST went Warlord. But to be honest I am happy that I didn't. They seem to be 100% group dependant.....which means, if you log on and don't have any friends online, you are pretty much out of luck. I mean sure, I guess you could grab a blunt or one handed sword and go solo or something but it just wouldn't be the same. Now Gladiators on the other hand, do have pole mastery skills. Although they don't get the cool group stun or anything and won't be AS efficient with the pole arm, they still have some skill with it. I still take my Gladiator out on the occassional pole party. As long as I don't try to tank I do ok. My STR as a gladiator seems to help in the pole parties as well. So not to give you the cliche answer of L2, but "it's all about how you want to play" I guess.
This is an intelligent post. I have both (Warlord as main) so I can speak pretty well to them. Warlords are entirely party/buff-dependant. Unbuffed, we are the weakest PVE class in the game. With SE buffs and a Haste pot, we are the bese, at least as far as melee goes. If you know an SE, latch on to him/her and DONT LET GO lol. Duo with an SE I make huge amounts of ep, solo I die alot.

As far as Hero goes, once you hit 77 as a Dreadnought, you are one scary [censored] in PVP. Check out Shock Blast. Its Ranged/AOE/Stun/Lower target's Pdef. 1v1 against = level Gladis I generally win if I get Revival to fire.

Gladi on the other hand sucks big time til lvl 58 (TSS). After that they start to get decent, and really good around the mid 60's. With heal pots you can (sort of) solo, and you are pretty decent at dishing fast damage to low pdef classes.

Both classes have cool builds. I am a +dex light armor Warlord. I have seen Attk speed gladi's, Health gladi's, and DMG gladis. In PVE an Attk speed gladi owns, while in PVP health is really the only way to go. I suggest Heavy Armor with both classes til lvl 64, then you can switch.

I went WL because I <3 the look of a giant pile of dead things. Almost went gladi, but frankly back in C2 there were a butload of em and I wanted to be abit unusual. Sometimes I regret it, but when I make 60% in a day at mid 60's I feel pretty **** good.
as for SE thingie, find WC. (for WL, that's it)
IMO, WC works better -- indeed no fast heals but generally you will be fine w/ GHP + CoL on green/blue mobs. (WC can help w/ pole as well)
You all give me a lot to think about. I want to do good in solo grinding primarily, then solo or group pvp, then group grinding. I have a Palus Knight that I planned on making into a Shillien Knight, but decided to create a Human (which looks better IMO) and try out a damage dealing melee class. Warlord doesn't seem like it will do me a lot of good, and according to MaudDib a Gladiator won't be a lot of fun till later either. So I ask you now, would a tank class fair better in PvE and PvP than a Gladiator? If so, which one?

I know archers or nukers are the way to go, but archers are way to expensive for me and I like the look of L2 heavier armor and dislike the look of Robes, so nuker is out of the question. I haven't thought about the assassin type classes, but I think they are probably sucky in PvE.

I'm just trying to find the right class to make my main, before I grow bored of leveling from 1-20 so many times. Thank you all again for the help. Keep the advice rolling.

As far as Races go, Orcs are to slow for my taste, DE run like ostriches, I like the Humans, would consider a Light Elf if they don't run like Ostriches. If that gives you more room to offer advice on a class choice than I am glad I can help, otherwise, sorry for wasting your time.
Hahahaha I like how you think. Go human tank. Temple Knights own but there is one very unappealing thing about em to me. Male Light Elves. I play female characters so I don't have that problem, but humans still look better.

Now the question is. Paladin or Dark Avenger. That's your choice. Me personally I would go for a Dark Avenger because they can really do some dmg in pvp and solo well with or without the panther. Plus it looks so **** good on both females and males. But seeing all the new skills Paladins get in C5 it makes me wonder. In the end, it's your choice. Look at the skill list they have now, take into consideration what they're getting in C5 and decide :D. Whatever you chose, you can't go wrong. Both are a lot of fun to play.

I like your enthusiasm. Well which one has the less amount of upkeep? I heard people don't use the Panther much, because it costs so much and that the Panther is what makes them so good. Is there a spell that costs a lot, that a Paladin uses? My first character created was going to be a DA, but a little bird told me to go SK instead. Like I said, the DE ran like an Ostrich, which doesn't sit well with me. Paladins appeal to me also. I always played a Paladin in other games. As soon as I hit 20 on my Dark Fighter I was fighting undead the whole time. I know Paladins are good against undead, but how often will I be leveling off them. Lastly, which one will my health bar stay up more on? The life taps are a cool idea, because I can pull/damage with them and heal myself, plus I get the drain corpse spell. Paladins get a self heal. Not sure if Paladins get something else cool for a heal or damage spell that DA doesn't.

Well I hope this adds to the discussion and allows people to give me more advice, like all the great advice given already.

If you mean daggers; for god sake daggers own PvE (when buffed).
Disclaimer: "PvE" excludes raid bosses.

Lets lay it out a different way.

Paladin:
Has a heal that does good but it costs a lot of mp.
Has shield stun (best stun in game)
Has 360% shield block (owns)
Has an advantage over undead creatures (necro summons in pvp)
Has magic resistance skills
Has an awesome skill called sacrifice later on in game (gives up own hp to heal for a lot)
Has a hate and a hate aura (affects groups of mobs and in C5 people)
Has Ultimate Defense (very nice pdef improvement)
Plus a few more great skills at higher levels

Dark Avenger:
Has the damage dealing panther (in my opinion it is cheaper to maintain than an sk's cubics)
Has a drain to get hp back from mobs
Also has hate and hate aura as a paladin
Also has magic resistance as a paladin
Has a really nice skill called reflect damage
Also has a shield stun as a paladin
Has a skill called hemstring (great for pvp. reduces speed)
Also has Ultimate Defense
And also gets some great skills at higher levels and after 3rd class change.

So now..... :D..... Pali or DA? I still stand by my first choice and say DA but if you like to be everyones favorite tank go pali. Those heals can act as a temporary healer when the true healer runs out of mp. But dont expect to be doing mad damage to anything except undead things. If you solo more DA is better but you will need heal pots more than a pali. If you trully solo a lot, reconsider a Temple Knight or Shillen Knight. The drain or the heal cubic will keep you going a long time but cost you also.
What do Paladins and DA get in C5? I looked for notes on it and couldn't find them. I drew up a sheet that compares the DA to the Paladin and I need the new skills to complete it. If DA does more damage and is more solo friendly, than it's probably my best choice. I don't want to solo a lot, but I haven't so far found too many people wanting to group. Of course my highest character is a lvl 21 Palus Knight.

Angelic Icon - Paladin - lvl58

This is the latest one I saw according to that forum. Hope it helps :D. I do the same thing when I choose my classes. Copy skills in excel or write em down and compare lvls and such. But first I see which is the coolest, not necessarly best.

DE run like ostriches...

Heh, you always have to mention that, eh? It's a ninja run!

My lower back hurts just watching them run.
They just run so fast that if they didn't lean forward, they'd fall backward. :D
Are you posting from work? I don't see you logged in at home. The game server just crashed so you aren't missing anything.

These server issues are ******* me off. This sort of crap shouldn't happen outside Beta as often as it does in this game. I'll definitely be swithing servers to a brand new server if that's the problem or switching to a similar game when one comes out if these things aren't fixed.
Lol wishful thinking. We can all dream. But in any case, I think tuesday is maintenance day, so I welcome it. Other than that, no more crashes dammit!!! I'm so scared of using the gatekeepers out of fear of game crashing that I started to run from town to town :p.

Yep, forum trolling keeps the MMO withdrawal symptoms at bay at work.
