If you look at the lvl1 mystic skills, you'll notice all mystics get a passive that increases MP regen, Cast Speed and Attack speed when wearing robes. All the LA armour masteries do it add these effects for when your wearing LA as well as increase Pdef. Robes masteries just increase pdef as theres already a passive for MP regen, cast speed and attack speed.
I got two sets, when I know it'll be hot and theres risks of death, I wear Robe. If its only a little group of 2 or 3 hunting low con mobs I'll jump in my light, get duals and add a little to damages. No need to say I rarely use my light set though. Since my Robe gives wit while my light removes some, and as a Bishop, peeps like Max rezzs... even in PvP. Theres a difference between 60% rez and 80% even in PvP for a level 70+ :)
Actually a healer in blue wolf light doesn't do bad at all. In a small group, its a nice setup. Generally though, unless the light armor is designed for mystics (which is basically bw light and tallum light), its generally not going to be as good as robes for most situations.
I have avadon light and avadon robes. I tried avadon light recently, only to find that the pdef isn't that different, and I'm better at keeping myself alive with very fast battle heals than that tiny pdef bonus.
You wear light if you want to be a archer/dagger because it increases your accuracy, speed, defense, casting speed and I forgot what else. However you don't get that lvl 1 passive skill that doubles your casting speed when wearing robe. I use this when I duo.
You wear hvy armor when you wanna be a tank. I dont think hvy armor increases atk speed, accuracy, casting speed and what have you. But it does increase your defense. I know this for sure. I use this when I solo.
You wear robe when your in a group, or duo with a tank, or whenever you feel like it :). I think if your a mystic it just increases defense. Im at work so I cant check. I wear robe when I duo with a tank, when it's time to buff, or when im in a party.
The 70+ bishop in my clan wears light armor and uses duals in most of our parties. When he has full prophet/SE buffs and BD dances, he actually does decent damage and can take a lot of hits. He still casts plenty fast enough to get off the battle heals/group heals/sleeps when needed. I would much rather have a healer that gets in there and does damage than one that just sits back and watches. A 9-man DD party with out-of-party prophet/SE = insane kill speed.
My Prophet currently uses Robes when in a party and then heavy Full Plate when soloing BUT I've changed that since most of the time I don't really enjoy Soloing on my own SO instead I use my robes when it comes to buffing a group or in a group party and any other time I'm either soloing or partied wih 1 or two other people I use light armour & a bow which is aweosme it does good damage you have enough mp to use (bonus CS on bow) on the other two people & Your bascially helping out in everyway 1) Buffing 2) Healing 3?) damage dealing! Which is awesome to do and makes you feel awesome when people really appreicate all the help you can give :)
Yeah but how often are you going to get a party like that, like seriously? And why bother putting a bishop in party when you're already getting out of party prophet and SE buffs. As a bishop you don't do much damage, you have almost no good buffs, if you are going to have your support out of party it would make more sense to put the bishop out of party too and grab another DD.
And again as the bishop stand point, no one wants our pure healing butts in a small party. It's overkill because, no good buffs for archers, nukers, or melee. You could fill that spot so much better with a SE, PP, or WC.
Me personally I gear as a party bishop, majestic robes, and acumen weapon with a conversion back up weapon for raids. I have -7 STR, I'm not even going to pretend like I would do any kind of damage. But really a melee bishop play style is not suited for any of the high end areas anyway.

Almost every night we have parties like this. The Prophet/SE are out-of-party boxed characters. The bishop is not. He gets included in the party because, like the rest of us, he likes to get XP.

We've had absolutely no problem with the melee bishop (as the sole party healer) on TOI 10, the orc outposts by Goddard, and deep in DVC. I don't know...it seems to work pretty good for us in these high end areas.
Obviously, the bishop isn't going to dish out damage like a nuker or a normal melee DD. But he IS going to do more damage than a bishop that just heals.
Probably. All the top quests for S grade though aren't in those areas though, can't say I've been in either for ages. I guess a bishop DDIng works for some but my damage is so lame I don't even bother. Plus it's a little expensive to go with a healer set up and a DDing healer set up.
