clan is usually a collection of people or friends, tied together by the same clanname and tag. Some of them help eachother with gear and others dont, just like some clans back up their members in pvp while others dont, an alliance is basicly a collection of these clans that raid together, making groups easier cause ya can get to alot more people and pvp/siege together :)
