Darkmotion's First Official Player Gathering (Can)

Well, it looks as I'm going to be the first one to step up to the plate.

Countless times I have heard : Dude, I'd like to meet you face to face...

Well, your chance is coming (and I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of you)... Come to Canada, come meet the Devil in person !

This event will favor peeps on the east coast (finally, some east coast love...) and will be held in Canada (not decided yet on exact location).

Location

Of course, if we choose a destination close to my home (Québec, Canada) we could get better deals on accomodations and we could get a better location (I could get a net cafe or a VIP section in a bar, or both)... I could also secure a deal for people who would like to sleep one night (you can sleep in a real castle around here)...

But of course, I'm willing to move to another destination if it's more convenient to gather more people (like Montreal).

Setup

How long would you make it ? Make it a day thing, or just a few hours ? And what do you want to do ? Do you want to play the game as a group, or just sit around and chat ? Or how about a friendly game of paintball ?

I'm leaving this pretty open, because I'd like to hear how you guys would set it up, and if there is actual interest for this kind of thing.

I asked God for some swag a while back to be able to create in-game events. Got nada. How about this time ? Hahahahahahahaha ! Come see me T, or at least send me a bag of goodies (wich may or may not include shoes, and/or Rust).

So... Who wants to get drunk with a bunch of canadians (You know you can drink at 18 around here...)

Yes, this is one very important factor. I enjoyed your idea about labor day weekend or some other kind of date when people are generally off, but you must remember folks will usually plan other activities for those dates in advance.

I am thinking during the summer, maybe july or august. Québec is beautifull and warm in the summer time.

It's a nice idea about Tim's (ROFL, some other dude said : DM WTB ketchup chip, coffee crisp and Tim's). I was chuckling when I saw that because I had 2/3 items at home...

But it's a bit cheap to tell you the truth.

I know a LOT of people. LOTS of people enjoy doing favors for me, for some reason I seem to attract niceness...

I could get you to visit and sleep in a castle, or how about a camping fest near the lake in a private residence ?

I have friends at beer companies, so I could probably get free beer for the event. I also have a friend who owns a good chinese restaurant, so food is also available for next to nothing...

But in the end, I am looking for a simple and re-usable formula, that can be emulated because these things can work well if they have some kind of structure.

I am trying to build a general concept, that can be used over and over again (because, you start with 1, if it works, you try again after a month or 2, and set a pace from there).

As a promo tour, it could even become the "Canadian L2 Tour Player Gathering".

for that matter DM, here in toronto i also have a former employer who owns a buffet restaurant, have a Manitoulin camping property, and a neighbor wo retired from working for Nestle Chocolates last year and still buys tons of craps for me.

reusable formual (best from you so far) is the camping thing. tell you what, if your event works in quebec, i know just the place to hold it in toronto.

REQUIREMENT LIST:
Camping equipment inlcuding but not limited to tent, sleeping bag, pontiac Aztec, or mobile home.

I am looking for a fomula you can use in Québec, as well as in Chicago, New-York, London, Sydney, Bruxelles, Berlin.

I am thinking more like daytime appearance in a game store, a lunch at a specified area, then a game session in a netcafe.

nametags. name in black on one side and red on the other, so if they get to drunk or start a fight we change their nametag to be red, then beat the [923] out of them, or at least until they drop their beer. its a "hardcore PvP game", could meeting each other in real life even possibly be a good thing?

Canada eh? Meh. Too far to drive, plus I'll have to deal with the Customs on the way back...

I think I'll rather wait till USA finaly assimilates Canada into 51st State(which has been LONG overdue), then I'll go up there pretty often. I do like the French Canada ^^

I'd definitely recommend meeting other players face to face if you can.

I met a girl in game a while back named Ling-Ling. A few months later I convinced her to come work for me in the U.S.

She now makes 87 cents an hour (double what she made at home!) leveling my character for me.

I'd like to thank NCSoft for letting players like her infest, sorry, gather in our online community.

I would like to attend something like this, but you'd have to give me plenty of warning, so I could book leave. As for what to do? I dont think people will want to play the game, since they could do that from their various continents... I think just a general get together and chat / have a drink about the game and life in general. It would be good to put real faces (pictures thread doesnt cut it) to the personalities on here.

Personally, I think a good plan would be as follows...

1200 - Meet up in a local [insert meeting place].
1700 - Go out to the field, have a few beers, tell a few stories etc.
2100 - Set up Harbour area (http://www.army.mod.uk/img/royalengineers/org/csqn/forge/stand_to.jpg) or camp site, whatever you want to call it.

Next day (for those who dont like the green).

0900 - Pack up, clean up, and eat.
1100 - Move to next location, bar/club/meeting hall/DMs house, whatever
1800 - Disperse!

But thats just me!

conventions usually happen at hotels, no? so we find a hotel in a city, call ourselves a convention and get discounts on per night stay.

DM can be the official spokesperson. call the hotel, book the convnetion, and fabricate nametags from whomever will RSVP. those with nametags get discounted hotel fees for the duration of the convention (excluding bar prices), and the whole group can do a meet and greet, then afterward do a tour of the city on a chartered bus (part of the rental package) concluding with a second gathering after the tour for drinks/stories/movies/etc.

camping can get old fast. hotels are always new.

and oh btw, expedia ftw.

Really hilarious how people react to something new.

NC's official reaction was moving the thread to off-topic (*sigh*)... I was gonna write up this complaint about how the HELL can this be off topic ??? You guys are trying to get peeps to do this !!!!!!!!!!!!

But then I come back and it's moved back to its original position.

Anyways, some good ideas out there, but let me add this information...

#1 : If you want to move official peeps, you'll have to include some way to promote the game. Basically you're going out there to meet a bunch of peeps who play the game, and to get more peeps from that area to join the game.

#2 : Hotels and convention centers are all good and fine, but these things cost a lot of money. You'll want to keep the cost to a minimum if you want to see some people...

#3 : There HAS to be swag. To make this kind of event a success, you'll need to give out stuff. Getting a gamer out of his gaming chair is hard. You have to lure them... ;-)

I think you should organise a player gather in texas... austin sounds like a good place... and we could all hold signs that say, "Ban the bots!" and sing songs like kumbaya (sp?)

Seriously though... if you want an unofficial player gathering it has to be cheap or have something else imo. If this were florida I'd say go to disney world... That way people can go with their family's and whoever plays L2 can sneak off and meet up pluto. It just seems like you would need some other attraction... anyway it sounds like a lot of work, so best of luck to you DM!

In any case, while I don't want to cramp anyone's style, if I was doing it as a player (and I have) I would concentrate on making it essentially a one-day event with some activity or gathering during the day with a party at night. It could be anywhere, a club, restaurant, park, whatever. I'd also use an Evite-type system so I could keep track of who intended to show up, etc.

But I'm just making suggestions. Obviously, the bigger the event you shoot for, the more logistically complicated it gets, but the more attractive it is. Double-edged sword. I think a lot depends on getting a sense of who is nearby who could come and concentrating on regional gatherings, rather than trying to do some big convention-style event.

But that's up to the individual, of course.

Actually, the plains are now a park. If you look closely at this picture, (http://www.bonjourquebec.com/fileadmin/Image/decouvrez/experiences/villes/quebec/tvhd_130_g.jpg) you'll see a part of the plains at the lower right corner.

People hang around there when the weather is nice. You can walk your dog, rollerblade, bike, have a picnic or just catch some rays on the grass...

And NO, you're not cramping anyone's style. Since basically I am a n00b at this kind of thing, I was expecting no less than some good info coming from peeps who have experience doing these kinds of things.

Thanks for the info. I agree about a registration type of process, this helps plan. Basically, I'm looking for something that will be mid-size. Not just a couple of folks gathering for coffee and a donut, but not a gaming convention either.

I will be sure to give plenty of advance warning so that people can plan ahead. You spoke of this kind of thing as a meta-game. Actually, I've never cared about a game enough to be interested in this kind of thing. But after two years, I have quite a few people I'd like to meet.

I'm also trying to create a visible network of L2 players in Québec (L2 is pretty hardcore, if I had a WoW player gathering, I'd probably have to reserve a conference room at a hotel, but with L2 it's harder to find the players).

Would depend where it's situated tough, I live 8 hours from Montréal in car and 5hour from Québec City(and I don't have a car :( )

the Plains of Abraham?

Oh, I also forgot. Oh a lighter note, fornication on the plains of Abraham is considered as a rite of passage for men and women of Québec.

You see, the plains are HUGE ! (so they are very hard to "moderate"). Furthermore, there are forest patches all around and some HUGE bushes, so it's pretty easy to conceal yourselves...

Also, every year, on the 24th of June, to celebrate "La St-Jean Baptiste", people gather on the plains (around a 200K turnup) and there is a BIG party, and a HUGE fire.

In older years, it wasn'T uncommon to see, every year, one idiot throw himself in the fire (and die). Nowadays there is a fence that surround the fire...

*winks* I will gladly admit to fornication on the plains of Abraham. ;-)

It's funny, because whenever I petition with this company, I get this really friendly person who says : I am moving you up to a higher level of support.

I would think shoot for a date in the summer.... kids are off, parents usually vacation in the summer.

Also if you do wind up going through with this let me know... my sister has major connections in the hotel industry.

As for me attending, I would love to, but unfortunately my summer is quite chaotic this year. /sadface
