New to L2 - me and wife have a couple questions!

Player Questions Started Last reply 49 posts
Me and my wife are checking out L2. We are WoW players looking for greener pasture. I have a couple of questions.

Before asking this, I went through the first 100 pages of this forum and couldnt find any solid duo suggestions.

What would be the best possible duo team for us? Please don't talk in acronyms since I am new! We are looking for something with obviously healing/buff and damage. We would prefer classes that would be good in larger groups at later levels. She likes playing the healing class and I like playing damage dealers. I am leaning towards dark-elfs as our races.

Which server would be good to join? We are not afraid of PvP, but would rather not be on a server where we are going to get ganked every 5 minutes. We enjoy people with a family attitude, and may be looking for a clan later too.

Any help would be appreciated.. thanks!!
Spellhowler (damage) and Shillen elder (heals and buffs), both dark elves.

You'll get ganked on any server at lower levels, no avoiding that.

Thanks for your response! Yes, I know it will happen, but are there any newer servers that you can suggest?
The servers are really all old enough that the populations are even. Teon and Bartz are the most crowded believe as is Sieghard. As for a friendly atmosphere, well that can probably be found on any server but i know lionna has a few clans like that.
Kain FTW :P
As Ellie said, Spellhower and Shillien Elder (though you don't actyually become that until lvl 40).

Also, some sort of fighter or tank and Spellhowler. Some of my favorite duos work this way.

I also like Archer and Spellhowler ( I say spellhowler a lot because that is all I really know). Some of the fastes xp I've ever gotten has been with this duo. However, you really have to hunt fast and it they must be monsters that the nuker can pretty much two shot.

The archer takes a shot or two and then pulls another while the nuker finishes it. It takes some practice but you will be out of breath by the end. But you have to be fast about it.
Yep for my suggestion it would go dark elf mystic, then one to dark wizard and the other to shillen oracle, then to spellhowler and shillen elder.

... then stormscreamer and shillen saint :P
well, while youre pondering the root'n'nuke team, let me introduce you to 4 other forms of duos that you may not as yet be familiar with;

there is the highly un-orc-thodox (pardon the pun) group of Warcrier/Destroyer (orc mystic and orc fighter respectively)

the more fun'n'ga.y TempleKnight and Elven Elder combination (<-- do this and get PKd in seconds by any elf hater on your server)

and the highly versatile and flexible group of human classes: lets look closely at 2 in particular that are noteworthy;

Prophet and Necromancer/ Bishop and Warlord.

now, the first combination will provide you with BIG firepower when set up correctly, but can be taken down pretty quickly due to the Prophet's shoprtcomings in the healing area. mostly, Prophet buffs and Warcrier buffs are the best in the game, but buffs arent half of what you need to win battles. buffs count for maybe 20%. the prophet really cant heal well, or resurrect either. consider this option Last please. i want you to take particular note of the next one.

Bishops provide the BEST **** heals in the game, they can survive a LONG time without mana if you know how to play your class, and are bar none worht every cooldown period when you do your thing with the Warlord. Warlord is the best Polearm class in the game which means he can swing a polearm in a circle and do an area-of-effect strike repeatedly until many mobs die. Warlords are the best for getting EXP in a tight spot when you have got a big group of mobs on your hands.

Many will debate whether you should actually use a Shillien Elder and a Warlord and sacrifice an important heal shill for a buff called Vampiric rage. i say these people have never actually seen a bishop, nor know of their existance. if they did, they would know a bishop can pull off more HP healed than can be regenerated by silly vapiric rage, and keep the Warlord at his best even with the crappy buffs the bishop gets. who will forsake Body of Avatar buff and prayer! only a fool in this poster's own opinion.

as a bishop myself i can tell you for a fact i can keep a tank alive using less MP than a SE, and still maintain him at 75% health. (really anything more is a waste of MP, and too much less becomes dangerous fast when youre in a condensed place.)

if i was to get my girlfriend and set her up in L2 as anything, i would rather the simpler support class (bishop) rather than the more complex Elders (both shillien elder and elven elder have more buffs that do different things and make life different for everyone.)

just my few cents.
Temple Knight and elven elder... lessons in ultimate frustration right there. I think the OP was looking to have FUN :P

i did discourage him from playing that :p
haha.. yes we are looking to have fun! Thanks for all the suggestions, however I'm still leaning towards the first suggestion, simply because... dark elves are cool lol... However, the Bishop and Warlord does sound nice. Something I will definately think about while waiting on this update to finish! I take it the warlord is the "tank" among them?
right. but yous hould try the orc race too. they really are very cool.
Are there any good sites that go into these classes/races in detail? I'm having trouble even finding the bishop path on warcry.

Also I've noticed the Shillian don't have many offensive attacks except against undead. Does this mean it would be very difficult for this class to solo should they want too?
official site is always the best.
Yes but you're a masochist for even suggesting it ;P

you bet. 1-20 is uber easy. 20-40 is needed with the help of whatever else youre playing.

same can be saud of every healer.
Warcryer/Destroyer does indeed look interesting... I'll have to turn the wife on to being green though.

show her a picture of what YOULL be looking like in them big muscularly biceps and that might get her swingin.
A SE can solo 20-40, 20-25 with pure nuking, 25-35 combination of nuking (emp helps alot) and meleeing, 35+ melee. VR helps alot and unless you guys plan to run some sort of buffer as box, take either SE or WC as healer/buffer. They are _alot_ more versatile then bishops, especially for small parties. And you can basicly forget about the undead nukes, they drain so much mana its not funny. It's impossible to level up with that.

And to add some more to the bishop vs. se comparison: it's not only vampiric rage (which in itself is a killer buff for any melee fighter), they also have empower (every mage wants it) and all the needed and precious crit buffs (which melee and archer chars want).
Since no one else has given you the standard warning yet, let me be the first.

Lineage 2 is NOT World of Warcraft.

The money grind is HARSH.

Yes the level grind is steep also...but overall it's a pushover compared to the money grind. (Especially with all the changes made to the game.)

There are ways to lessen the pain though. Just browse the forums for plenty of suggestions and help. But the easiest thing that you can do is not to limit yourselves to just one character each. Get one set of characters up to a good level then swap classes/characters and level another. If your playing together and use your newbie buffs/exchanges wisely you can breeeze a couple of characters from 1-20 (30 isn't much harder either) in a short time. Use this time to try out different classes and characters to find out which ones you enjoy playing and which ones you don't. After all there are only 2 classes (Mages and Fighters) pre-L20 to play and only a few more equipment choices. If you share equipment you will save more money than you spend.

Once you have a few L20 chars, decide which ones you like the most and level those. Play the other characters when you want a break from your 'mains' or just need to make some extra cash and your mains are floundering due to lack of equipment.

As long as your not in a huge tearing hurry to level to max and get the absolute top equipment immediately, the game can be plenty enjoyable even under the 'grind'.

haha.. indeed... so, this pair is a kick *** duo? I suppose what we are looking for is a way we can play together and conquer the majority of the game (beside raid stuff of course). While we like to group, and be part of a clan, we don't want to be forced to do it all the time to progress and get some nice gear.

Thanks for the warning... I've read about the grind and the money situation, so I am prepared for that... what confuses me about your response is using lower level characters to make extra cash... would it not be feasible to use our mains to kill lower lvl mobs for cash to finance our equipment upgrades?

I realize this is a lot of questions, and stuff i'll learn as I play, and i appreciate everyones willingness to respond. But, I do have a tough road, so the more info the better... remember, I have to convert her from WoW to something else :) I'm hoping it wont be too difficult!

If you want a good idea of how various characters look or animate...you have to very good in game options.

1) Go to Giran and check out the crowds. (Good representation of classes although most will be afk shops.) Each starter area has a quest to get a Free Teleport to Giran Scroll. (There is another shopkeeper in Giran who has a quest to send you back!)

2) Each Gatekeeper has an option for you to go to the monster racetrack free of charge. (And attached arena!) Go there and most of the times there are at least a couple of people fooling around in the arena. Here's a good place to check each race/class animation and attacks at a higher level than you might see otherwise. You don't need to actually get in the arena, but can just sit on the side and watch for a bit.

oh! And don't forget to open your action menu and try out all the 'emote's!
not feasable by any measurement to use high levels to kill low level mobs. there is the 8 level penatly to consider; a player 5 levels above a mob will notice the mob name become blue above the hp bar. this means the penalty is in effect. 8 or more levels and the mob goes DEEEP blue and the effect is increased significantly.

the effect: drops reduced a LOT, exp from killing also drduced by the same percentage.

so ya gotta hunt in your own range.
At the moment Shillen Elder + Spellhowler would be your kick as duo. Mages can level very fast and mages have their use in every gameplay aspect you can find in lineage2. They do very well in small PvP, they do very well in sieges (both due to their range) and if you listen to shouts for raid invitations they always yell for mages and from time to time for Shillen Elder. No one asks for melee (like destroyer) for a raid... The biggest problem with this combination is that the SE might become boring to play, as they can only buff and heal and are the slowest healer in game.

Thanks, that makes sense, as it is with most mmorpg (with exp), I don't remember drops being different... that is good to know.

That is what I am afraid of... I don't want her to get bored... but she likes her resto druid in wow, so she may enjoy it.. well just have to play it out and see.

Short answer: No.

You cannot kill lower level monsters for cash with a higher level main. Drops by mobs are influnced by the level of the person who does the most damage to them in relation to their own level.

Deep Blue Mobs - (-8 Levels) Drop chance is almost non-existant , XP is also reduced.
Purple Mobs - (-6 Levels) Drop Chance is Reduced. (1st level of purple is ok, the second is very noticably reduced.) XP is also reduced.
Green Mobs - (- 4 levels) No reductions.
White Mobs - (+/- 2 levels) No reductions.
Yellow Mobs - (+4 Levels) No Reductions.
Pink Mobs - (+6 Levels) No reductions
Blood Red Mobs - (+8 Levels) No reductions.

Please note that anything that is Yellow or higher is exponentially harder to fight. But as you go up in levels the opposite is not quite as true for stuff that is lower level than you. (Mostly noticable above L40 the closer to L50 you get.) Your best return on kills/difficulty are against Green/White mobs. Sure you can kill higher level mobs easier in a duo or with mages...but you make much less money that way. Keep in mind that the fewer mobs that you kill to reach the next level ALSO means that you get fewer drops for that level. The amount of adena you get per kill goes up pretty slowly once you hit L15ish and stays that way. So having to kill twice as many mobs to reach your next level also means you have almost twice as much adena for the level too. The same is true for drops. 2x the kills = 2x the chance for a full drop. And if your not spending a ton of money to level fast, (Avoiding Shot usage or Potions) the amount of downtime is lower and your actual leveling rate isn't hurt that much really. Easy kills = faster kills. Faster kills = faster leveling. Fast, easy kills without spending $ = More money for equipment.

wow.. that is most helpful... thank you. Now, if this update would ever just finish, i can actually get in and play!
make sure to tell us what server you will be playing on (at least initially)
Kain is what you're looking for.

Oh, by the way, Once you get done updating the one computer, you can just copy the Lineage2 folder over to any other computer you will run it on. Much quicker than repatching every computer.

Also, i'm not sure how far into the update you are right now, but if you installed from the Retail CD's, it will take like 5+ hours to download. For future installs, Download it from the Download section on this website. It contains all the current patches and updates. It takes less than 2 hours to download.

Kain is what you're looking for.

I thought Kain was one of the top PvP servers where everyone spent their time killing each other?
I just finished the update and I am in the tutorial now.. I'm in the liones server (however you spell it), however, this is just a test, so there is a chance ill change... Right now, i'm trying to figure out how to setup my movement.. id prefer to use wasd, but that my not be possible! Im always picky when it comes to movement! So far though, the game looks great! Name is Pleigha on this server, but that will change.
Your on lionna.....Cool, what race did you go?

You can make it so you can use the WASD keys. however... it really isn't worth it. The movement isn't very natural.

Koreans (eastern players in general?) seem to like the point and click movement so the game works better that way. Otherwise, when turning using the WASD you will find that you "pivot". it is absolutely awful. The way you can use WASD is to go to the options/game and then check "enter chat".

you might like it but I doubt it.

Dark-elf, but that may change when we start playing for real.. right now, were just checking it out, so well probably end up changing. Most definately our names... I will however, post our first mains here when we are set!

Thanks for the info... I'll try it out. That's the one thing I find most difficult about switching to another game is the movement adjustment.

Also, i want to thank everyone again.. it is a nice refresher to have so many helpful responses.

Edit: I do like the enter chat mode better..... any way to adjust the mouselook?
Just so you know....Once a character is past level 5 thats your main, and only new player buffs apply to that character....Thats per server.

Also... be mindful that you are not thinking of making many characters and THEN you will make one to keep. It takes about 7 days to delete a character. Really.

Welcome to Lineage 2 ;)
just remeber, when joinnig any sever you have to think about that servers play time.Every sever has its political problems/most active times. if you join one that is not heavy when you play then you will prob miss when that server is the most active. and that mean harder to fine groups. and that = you get bored.

if your looking at any good duo, most will work up to lv 60. some to lv 70.

Dark elf healers- are good for , Mele groups, and Duoing with wizzards and dd's. Every wizzard wants an SE- Shillien Elder and at lv 60+ most mele DD's need there buffs aswell.

So you picked a good choice to start with. and you will learn in time what classes fit your playing stile best.

If you ever jump on barz look me up im playing on my lv38 human wizzard -Zakna
Welcome to Lionna! Post a 'welcome' post on the Lionna forums; you'll find us to be pretty friendly. Also there's lionna.com.

Feel free to pm me online sometime to say hi! And again: Welcome and good luck! :)
Well, come to Bartz.. Fun place lots of stuff going on.. all the time.

If you do happen to come to bartz i can hook you up with good starting gear and show you high end charaters and some lvl 20s starter path so on so forth.

For an good duo.
Prophet + archer you wont take any damage so the prophet can heal and archer does damg

Gladi + prophet this is what i did to lvl my gladi fomr 66 to 73
easy going gladi puts out enough damage to keep the buffer with good amouths of mp due to how fast they kill

Gladi+Se good group do to vr buff that reflects damage you do to your hp witchs is a heal this party can go on for ever

Destoryer +prophet /warcryer same as gladi but destoryer little more hp can handle problems a gladi could not

SH/sps (mages)/ Se sh/sps both have over hit skills witchs gives you more exp per moster se can gives the mages empowerment - addes more magic damg also se can restore the mages mp

Welcome to Lionna :)
My husband and I came from WoW originally also then moved to GW and now here we are..However we went Elf but are in the same boat looking for a good due pair. We both went mage :) I have always played healer so I'll probably be going EE route as for him I haven't a clue what path he should take..best wishes to you
EE and spellsinger should be good -if you're also gonna box an SE :p
I think your husband is gonna miss some firepower at later levels, which the SE can give with empower. Other than that, EE and sps is a good duo. Sps uses mp like crazy, and EE regens better than SE. EE -> can recharge a bit more due to nice regen. And if everything goes wrong, you will eventually have nice xp rez (restores lost xp).
Well first off, way to go for looking at L2... My husband and i have been playing this game together for just over a year.. And we love it. We started off on the Kain server, he was playing an Orc Tyrant, and I was playing a Shillien Elder, the xp was always pretty consistant, and we found we could duo very effectively this way. Then we moved to the hindemith server and have found this server to be very friendly. This time he decided to be an orc once again, only this time he played a destroyer, basically a big meat shield, that has tons of hit points, and can do a fair amount of damage. I once again stuck to the Shillien Elder route. We've done very well with this coupling. IMO this is not always the fastest leveling, but it is very consistant, his high hp makes it a bit easier on me as the healer to not have to panic every time his health drops, and it has enabled me to get a bow and help contribute to the dmg output simply because i don't have to heal him constantly.

Good luck whatever/wherever you decide to play, if you do come to hindemith please feel free to look us up, we would be happy to help with some startup gear, and getting you to the same areas to lvl.

SashaVale lvl 5x SE
Konklaive lvl 6x Destroyer
Just a note on this post. Yes, the grind on an SE can become a bit repetitive, however, at lvl 40+ you can get tattoo's, if you aren't sure how tattoos work or what they are let me know. But basically, they are a way to modify your base stats i.e strength, con, dex, int, wit etc. I currently have a +5 Wit tattoo, and I love it. Your wit influences your casting speed in respect to SE's. Without any other buffs to increase your casting speed, I sit at 625. With buffs and dances to increase casting speed I can get upwards of 840 casting speed, and with a weapon that has the special ability of casting speed on it, I break 900 easily. So while at lower levels they may not be the quickest casters, with the right setup they can cast just as fast and in some cases faster than most nukers out there.

SashaVale lvl 5x SE - Hindemith
Sasha we do play on Hindemith also. I started there but then switched to Gustin however I still play there. Since your husband started as an orc can u plz tell me if and where the manor manager is?
thanks so much
Currently there is no manor manager for either the orc or dwarf starting villages. (C5 info appears that this will be added then.)
