As per topic, a few questions to anyone who might've checked these out empirically:
1) does the level of unlock affect the opening % of chests, in relation to their level?
2) if so, does level 1 unlock ever open higher level chests? (i.e. be actually worth buying the keys)
3) do chests still drop items? All I've seen is adena so far

1) yes
2) sometimes (never is worth the price of keys)
3) yes, at the same drop rate as any other mob 1/290000000KKKKK
I can't answer your questions but I can say that treasure chests suck. Since C4 I've collected over 10 keys with my Spellhowler. All but twice the treasure chest turned into a mob and attacked me. The two times it opened it dropped ....
I open them all the time, normaly I get 2*adena as from mobs around the cheast, and sometimes its 3* or 4*the adena. only items I got so far was some enchant armour D ^^
At the beginning, when there were "boxes" (good) and "chests" (mobs), it was at least halfway somewhat interesting to open the boxes. But now, when you no longer know which are good and which are bad, it has become a bit ridiculous again. I got about 50 keys in the dimensional rift and spent them while duoing with a nuker. From the ca. 50 keys, I got mobs chewing on me about 75% of the time, and from the rest I only got adena from 4 chests - the other "good" ones dropped nothing. Yes, the keys were of a sufficient level. If I had to actually BUY keys, this would just be one huge waste of money.
The only time it is actually worth it to use the keys is when you get them in the dimensional rift and then use them there on the "invader food", or when you can (via trial and error) figure out which ones are bad and which are good (sometimes they differ in level and con in different colours).
Oh, and in C5 apparently dagger users get a skill to summon deluxe keys (you buy some key of thief, use the skill and then get a large bunch of deluxe keys).
So now I have a stupid question. I've been opening chests (with my Spellhowler) by selecting the chest then right clicking the key. Is this the right way to do it? I'm just shocked that the rate of successful open rates for me are so low - maybe I'm doing something wrong.

That is how you do it. However you, being a SH, just use keys that drop and anyone can use those. They have been discussing how useless the unlock skill is and the waste of money it is to buy the keys of thief needed to use the skill. Personally I feel they should change it so that you just need a dagger equipped to use the unlock skill instead of wasting cash on keys of theif.
But yes you are doing it corectly on your SH :D That is as long as you are using the correct lvl of key to chest.
in my own experience, after buying up many many keys lvl 2-4 and using them all ontheir respective chests i can tell you a few things:
it APPEARS that the higher level of hey, the lower success probability to open and loot the chest.
this may not be true, but in my own experience, it is.
ive fired off over 500 keys of each type over the past while, and only a handful of times have i gotten anything remotely valuable.
the drop rate is much higher than killing mobs, i can say that. dropping ench scrolls off mobs takes a nasty long time to do. to spoil takes even longer, but i got a good handful opening chests, so the drop rate is definitely higher.
ive had a few recipes drop on me as well; SSD recipe, DMP recipe (sold ofr 500k ^^) and thats it.
no weapon drops, not many adena drops, and buying keys for 5k, 10k, 20k for each lvl respectively made me put out a lot for not much of anything in return.
its not a great reward system, but if you do it sporatically, you can get quite lucky.
If you were around before they fixed the chest names, you saw what the ridiculous proportion of "mob chests" to "treasure chests" really was.
I stopped even trying to open them. Even when I knew which was which I very seldom ever got anyhing (I think I've gotten 1 EAC and 2 EAD from chests, and once upon a time I was opening a chest for each key drop I got.)
Then they patched the box names, and I started selling the keys.
I am getting deluxe keys that claim that they have a 100% chance to open a chest level 60 to 69. I am getting the keys as drops from Doom Warriors. The chests in the area are green to me so they must be in the correct level range [60 to 69] that the keys are supposed to open. I must have gotten more than 10 keys dropped so far and I am not even sure one opened. If it did open it had only adena in it as I have not gotten any interesting drops. My only consolation is making a ton of level 10 crystals while in the area. Now if I could only find a group doing raids so I could level up some crystals ...

once again the only good way to make sure you get an openable chest in an area is to actually kill all the chests in the area about 3 times. after that, the good chests spawn in the area frequently. after youve opened some chests, kill again 3x and open again.
its the only way i know to make sure the good chests have spawned.
Simple answer is it is not worth the cost of the keys to open the chests. If you want to open chests make a few trips through the rift. Dont open the chests in there they suck but you will get a ton of the special chest keys while you are in there. Then when you are out grinding open the chests with 1 key.
Good luck I have opened over 100 chests nothing but adena so far more times than not though the key disapears and the chest attacks.
