Today some pillock with a chinese name tried to train me in Tanor canyon. I saw him gathering mobs from a long way off so I stopped hitting mobs and stood still with my SE. We had finished about 15-20secs before he reached us. Predictably, he came over and fd'd. Then the mobs started on the SE.
Why? She wasn't doing anything except standing- do mobs then aggro you regardless of what you're doing? I always thought you had to be hitting or moving or healing to pull aggro?
Those mobs are aggro. If they are pulled far enough away from their spawn point, they loose aggro and will just stand there when someone FD's. But if they are still in their 'range,' they will aggro on anyone nearby.
When you see a train approaching, you have to make a judgment if they will still be aggro when they arrive. If in doubt; run. If you have an archer with Stun Shot, that may be fun to shoot at the training toon as he approaches.
Didnt they change the AI in C4?
I know in catacombs if your sitting near the door not doing ANYTHING, sometimes when a mob spaws it will agro the sitting char (at a great distance). I got blammed too many times for trainning people by idiots who were sitting in the hall afk and got randomly agroed and got killed.
Probably the same thing that happened with you... mobs can just randomly target someone that doing nothing.
EDIT: I did not come anywhere neer those guys with mobs... I was leveling in the next room.
1- Technically you do build hate while doing nothing--it's just an exceptionally small amount under normal circumstances. Sometimes, however, there is no other source of aggro and the monsters are already in their attack mode, making that small amount sufficient.
2- Was the SE lower level than the monsters and/or party members? Potentially large hate bonus, enough to multiply the "standing doing nothing" hate baseline.

I am talking from my own experience and should not be considered as fact, but this is how I see it.
When you attack a mob you get hate based on the damage you do to it. However after the mob has died, you don't lose all the aggro. Some stays with you. Exmaple being a few weeks ago when I was in a room in HC, I ran out of dss, went to town to buy some, came back and my room was taken by bots and a guy who was running them. I simply sat in the next room which was way smaller and slowly lvled, then after bout 20 minutes went back in my other room. The bots were there, but in the hallway standing still. I began to kill the mobs as it was my room again, and then stopped for a second to rebuff. While I was rebuffing this shadow mob started attacking a bot who was just sitting in the hallway doing nothing. So it obviously still had hate on him but the weird part is that I was also in range of trhe shadow and so was the buffer. The bot was closer though. The good news is the bot died and dropped a elven ring :D.
I think aggro is the opposite of karma. You lose karma when you attack mobs, you lose aggro when you stop attacking mobs. Simple as that :p. You gain karma when you kill players instead of mobs though :D. But obviously aggro is lost a lot faster than karma.

This has happened to me too. If the chinese pillock :D was high lvl, he may have had skills like madness, switch and whatever else exists that switches the target of the mob onto somoene else. It works really well on lower lvl mobs.
Exact same thing happened to me 2 days ago. I was in branded, this guy in nightmare light comes by with a small train. I was killing 2 mobs then stopped as I saw him. He went around me a few times without the mobs aggroing me. Then he used some skill and the mobs began hitting me. Other than that if you stop in time, mobs from the train should not aggro you. It hasnt happened to me ever like that.

LOL Techincally this is not correct ;)
Essentially it comes down to what Angdil said its all about the mob aggro behaviour.
I posted a thread on mob aggro behaviour when discussing charm, but I couldn't be buggered finding it.
In a nutshell the trainers will pull mobs which are aggressive to anyone within a certain radius, irrespective of their actions.
Mobs can be passive, social, aggressive or a combination of aggressive and social. Different areas have variations of the theme and mix and match between aggressive and social mobs, especially as you go up levels.
This changes again as you move into the new C4 territory where there is a new type of "residual" aggro which is faction based (Varka vs Sileno faction). In this case it just depends which faction you have sided with which determines the aggression of the mobs.
Coming back to the OP's question tho, you did not have to do anything other than stand there as when the "trainer" FD'd the "aggressive" mobs which they brought down on you simply began a new target seeking cycle. The act of FD wipes the FD'er off the hate list, this is different from hate reducing effects such as charm and confusion which drop you on the mobs hate list allowing the mob to switch to a more dangerous target within its perception.
The only thing that can work in your favour in these circumstances is as Angdil explained the mobs "tether". Eventually all mobs reach a finite distance from their spawn point at which point they "give up the chase" and begin to lose you from their hate list. The hate loss is not automatic and is lost in pulses such as a damage over time effect. In most (not all) cases the mob will not cycle through their target re-acquisition cycle untill they "reset" in the vicinity of their spawn point. They can still reacquire the original target tho if you come back within aggro range. This was essentialy the "ye olde" tactic of splitting mobs since the days of prelude, as the mobs with the least amt of aggro gave up first. :)

So basically, I can't warantee that standing still will help me anymore :( Annoying that. Any way of targeting FD'd players while they're playing dead? :P

Yes, shift-click them to target them, then unleash hell :)

Don't need to shift-click to target FD'ed players.
If you have an archer stun shot the guy leading the train to you. If you're a nuker you have a couple of choices. If Spellsinger, use frost bolt (or whatever its called) and that will slow the trainer allowing the train to take him down. You may go red, but unlikely. If you're a SH or Sorc, you can try Icebolt and hope for the same effect, but it has a low sucess rate. Being a SH, I usually slam the person with a Shadowflare (high possibility of going red) and maybe another nuke if I think they're mostly at full health. The goal in this case is hoping that weakens them enough to go down to their own train. Its risky, but I'd much rather go red on someone training me than dieing to mobs and possibly losing my gear. Good news if you pulled it off successfully they get 4% xp loss and possibly drop gear.
