I've had a copy of L2 sitting around for a long time, I was wondering if there was any real reason to start as a new player. I know the leveling takes a while, but being a completely new player would it make me not want to continue to play or is it fairly easy to get going?
I played mostly the korean beta, then bought the game for NA release and never played :| When I say a new player, I mean I don't really remember anything past level 20 from beta when there was only one promotion.
I saw the C5 video and really want to start playing, I just don't want to waste a whole lot of time to have to struggle with being a new player. I hope you can see my hesitation into jumping into things.

games are meant to be jumped into. bottom line is, you wont know until you try it. if you like the movies and the ambiance of the game, id say you're hooked already...you're not going to loose anything if you play for a short time, decide its not the game for you, and quit. likewise, you're not going top loose anyhting if you become a lineage junkie, except the monthly service fee and time spent having fun. why the hesitation?
It is a lot easier to get started now than it was when the game first came out. In Prelude and C1, it took people 6 months or more to get to level 50. Now I think you can do it in 2 months or less. Soloing is easier than it used to be. Plus, as a new player you get Newbie Buffs. These help you out tremendously. It's like having a high level prophet come help you level. The only thing about the Newbie Buffs is that only your first character above level 6 will get them. So if you level a character to 10 and then decide you don't like that class and want to reroll, you don't get the newbie buffs again. The only way to get newbie buffs would be to switch servers.
By level 50 you should be able to join a decent clan. Not one of the powerhouse clans, but at least a neutral clan with an alliance. In fact, you may even be able to find a clan before that. Either way, once you hit 52 you'll be in B-grade and can start going to all the "hot spots" like DVC. You would be able to participate in sieges and pvp, even if you will die easily, lol. By level 60 you could probably find a place in one of the major alliances on your server, if that's what you wanted to do.
So I don't think it's pointless to start now. As I said, it's much easier to grind now than it was in the past. (When I was level 35, we'd get 10% an hour in Cruma Tower; now you can get like 40% an hour at that level.) The first month or two might be hard, but you can quickly catch up to the lower end of the player base and be able to start participating in everything that goes on.
C5 will also add lots of stuff for the sub 65s in the new areas that help solo play. It looks really good. Also greatly increased HP regen while sitting then you're under level 40, whatever they mean by "greatly" :p

I'm affraid you're already in. I think your first mistake was coming here, and this bad luck of yours just keeps coming back, as now I just remarked you.
My friend, you see folks in L2 are very cautious, but also very aware. Fresh blood of quality never goes "unnoticed".
Just pick a server, and tell me where you are. I will get help on you like a kid on an ice cream cone.
Some good things are that it is easier to lvl now then when you were back in korean beta. However, there is still a bit of a grind so you need to know this.
You won't find a lot of people aroudn in the starter towns (you will find some) because they have levelled up and are not elsewhere.
When you get to lvl 20 and your first class change go to Dion. You will find other 20+ people there and you can meet them and perhaps even join one of the clans. I've noticed that there is a whole other population and social scene in the 20+ areas.
And, if you are ever feeling like you are the only one in the word, go to giran and gaze upon the lag ;)
Dont waste your time. I see alot of people not even make it to lvl 50 before they say its boring and move on. there is many other reasons beyond being bored. Gank squads over priced market insane grind to level botters cheaters and so on.

That's very possible too. This game isn't for everyone. There are pk'ers, scammers (all allowed so be mindful) and of course other issues.
If you don't like grind or you don't seek a clan it can get a little brutal. Essentially the game is the interaction between people. The wars, the sieges and the brutal leveling in both "levels" and money and equipment.

If your restarting with a fresh account or on a new server (So you get the newbie bonuses) the levels up to L20/30ish are pretty **** easy.
After that it gets nasty again. (Money wise) Levels are easier than ever to get...much to the games detriment I believe. The money Grind is the hardest thing to overcome. And it is annoying to see so many people failing to understand cooperating to make cash. Instead everyone is falling over themselves to blow money and level as fast as possible. It seems the 'pvp' is what so many seem to think is the whole 'reason for the game' is.
I truly believe there is a significant enough portion of the playerbase that *cough* ebabies *cough* just so that they can run around and gank each other instead of spending a good portion of their time grinding just to be able to pvp at sieges or at other less frequent times.
I really don't think the 'RPS' balance changes will help anything (My bet is them being changed in C6 anyway...if they don't get nerfed into oblivion in C5 by the Korean Playerbase anyway.) But all the other lower level areas and items will surely be a welcome change and help to those of us who play the game without 'outside help'.
Depending on what you want to do in game (pvp, gank, pve, chat, whatever) it's not a bad idea to get your feet wet now. If you find out you don't like it, a newer game should be hitting the market about the time you get bored. (Warhammer Online is the one I'm keeping my eyes on myself.)
Dude! The answer is in front of your face! If you can post here, you already payed to play at least for a month! Or you are using the free month. Just play it! If you have fun, well then keep playing. Games are meant to be fun...when you stop having fun, then stop playing...it is that **** simple.
You just comming here shows that you show some interest in L2. Just play! Don't base your decisions off of someone elses...that would be a mistake.
If anyone that is new wants to move to kain I can hook you up with adena/gear/advice, im insanely rich.
