Is fishing now just wasted code???

When C-4 first came out, it was nothing to see people throwing poles in the water all over the server. Now, you rarely even see people fishing or selling fishing related items at all anymore. Has fishing gone the way of the boat ride?

Da Smookster...
Thats because the unohoo's can do it all the time so fishing manually becomes less rewarding as the price of the items go down.
It has gone the way of the dodo for me. When it first came out I did some serious fishing. What do I have to show for it? Lots of fish oil recipes.

Incidentally, I wonder how many people actually play the lottery or bet on the monster track.

I bet at the track once and won. I still laugh when they shoot the losers. Why don't they do that for the olympiad?

Touche'....

Although someone has to be playing the lottery because the values keep resetting. But when it first came out...I thought it would be big numbers like 10,000,000 to start or something like that. That little 100k isn't even worth it.

It would make the Hero competition alot more painful to lose.... ;)

And whats the deal with common craft recipes for that matter? When's the last time someone used their common craft skills?

I was about to say "well, I fish once in a while" until I got to that last line. I got talked into a boat ride last week and probably have no room to talk now.

Yes, fishing is a minor amusement that isn't going to be terribly important or popular. I'm not sure that's unintentional, though, as it seemed like just a fun minigame rather than a key element of L2's design.

It was an afterthought, after all.

I used them twice. Both to make monocles. One for me and one for some guy who really wanted one. Gave it to him "pro bono", he supplied the mats.
Used the boat only when I was too poor to tele. Never have fished, but I did bet, once, on the Races. Lost my $$ and that was that.

I think the races is one of the things from the Koren servers that came over but didn't translate well to the N/A market. I'd be interesting in seeing if it's bigger ther then here.
well, just to share my 2 adenas... i fish often... since i am a melee, when i solo i have some seriuos downtime while regen my hp, and i prefer this rather than spamming heal pots... you know, income is not huge usually :P
so in those downtime, i fish... i regen less hp/mp than just sitting, but at least i don't get so bored waiting ^^
just cross fingers you do not catch a monster the very first bait you trow... ;)

edit: and sometimes you got even recs for that! especially if you fish in catacombs water (yes it works) and ppl swims out in front of you and you say "gotcha!" :P :P :P :P: P
Has anyone ever used the common craft recipes to craft dyes? Based on the costs of the fish gems I've always found it easier to just buy them from mammon. And what about greater swift attack potions and greater haste potions...ever crafted those?

Da Smookster...
My understanding is that the dyes end up being too expensive because you need a recipe for each dye in addition to the craft recipe you need originally.
I crafted some Greater Heal Potions, but i couldnt fish the nneded Fishscales. So this common craftproject just stopped. I have more than enough oil of course.

Quite right....too expensive.

I don't know about NCSoft, but as a programmer, whenever I find that I've written in some feature that people don't really use, I try to find a way to make it useful. I guess it would take knowing how well it goes over in Korea before I can say it's really not working out well...

Back to my original thought, though....Is there anyway to make fishing profitable or make it a more useful aspect of the game? Since you can dredge up monsters while fishing, I don't really consider it much of a diversion since it can still be life threatening. Maybe if you had a chance of fishing up a weapon or armor or something like that....

Da Smookster...
I do think people would also use it a bit more if you could actually fish up the recipes other than fish oil.
I went fishing the other day... got distracted, so it didn't last long, but I will get back at it sometime soon. The thing is that I want lost of proof of fishing to expand wh/inventory/trade slots

Thats the only good thing about fishing......
I've yet to try fishing, because I'm very focused on hitting 75. My understanding (correct me please if I'm wrong) is that you don't get XP while fishing. If that's true, then that's why you don't see a lot of fishing. If you can fish/xp I'd be willing to try it out.

you do get xp. It is just very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very slow. (I typed all thosever 'very'... coppy/paste ftl!)

yeah u don't really get xp. THere is a chance to fish up a mob that does get xp but it's not that great and not that frequent. Fishing for xp is like farming elpies for adena at lvl 75.
Hi Smookie,
What I do, is to keep that sweet fluid quest on. At the various places I hunt, sweet fluids pop into my quest item inventory. After I've accumulated a fair amount I hop into Giran to see if anyone is buying fish shots. When they are, it's bonus time. Otherwise it's still ok to trade in the sweet fluid for shots and then to sell back the shots.

The adena I get from that, I use to purchase Proofs of fish to increase slots in inv and the like. Once I'vce maxed out, the money I make from sweet fluids will go toward the purchase of various mats, recipes etc all for commonm craft stuff.

I let the fishing and its related quest pay for itself.

Then I can craft things like hairpins, eyepatches potions and the like solely from the money I make within the quest. These things make great prizes for clan contests by the way.

It was an excellent suggestion to make regen time = fishing time. People still do buy fish gems so it is possible to make a mild profit while regenning.
What do you do though?

Sell the sweet fluid as just that or make them into fishing shots and sell them?

That kinda what I figured, but thanks for confirming it. So that's probably the best answer right there is that most people are grinding away and fishing while enjoyable does pratically nothing to your xp bar.
Interesting thought though...

Why not have fishing give you XP? Would that take anything away from the game or would that put too much emphasis on fishing? I mean why not have proof of fish be used to purchase XP tokens from the Fishing Guild that can be traded in to a Adventure Guild NPC for a buff that increases XP gain and Adena drops by 50% for 20 minutes? Would that be taking the prestige away from the higher ups?

Da Smookster...
The problem is that NCSoft made fishing so anti-bot that it ended up only really being worth for bots to do :/
I enjoy fishing alot! I stay low fishing level because the base fish mats are more useful
I spend about 10k for 50 lures and use them all up,

On avarage I get
50-75 Proofs from chests
15-20 Fish Oil (I use to make Greater Fish Oil)
3-5 Fish Gems (Sell or use for eyepatches/hairpins)
10-15 Fish Scales (For Swift attack pots, GHPs)
16-20 Fish Bones ( I just turn these to Proofs)
80-120 Common Craft recipes (Sell to store :P)

So, much like native indians, I try to use Everything I hunt :)
I dont find that fishing is useless, but as you can see, for a 10k at a time investment, I make alot of use for it.
Call me an orc....

But fishing should be a relaxing type of thing to do in game to unwind. If a person wants XP hit the grinding mobs.

I feel ya on this...

But I don't think that it's much for unwinding when they add that element of danger there by fishing up MOBs. Perhaps this is that "anti-bot" fail safe, but it really just keeps me on the lookout and my hand on the trigger to switch to a usable weapon....

Plus...fishing takes alot of time. It can actually feel like more of a grind than leveling sometimes....at least to me. Especially when you consider yourself fishing for a purpose.

Da Smookster...
Yeah, the mobs are really disruptive, especially since often it lags before they appear, so you've already tossed your line (and used the bait) when the mob appears.

Not to mention moving around when the spot clears.

These were all meant to make it more attractive to ordinary player, sadly it kinda worked the opposite. But thats the curse of the problem, its very very hard to make solutions against it.

And what about greater swift attack potions and greater haste potions...ever crafted those?

i craft greater haste pots :) fish scales are of course much more less than oil, so i craft as many as i can for my personal use mostly, then turn all the oil to premium oil and excange for proofs... right now i keep the proofs for expanding wh, but probably later i'll consider selling also :)

Did you take the cost of the lures into figuring out if it was cheaper to buy the dyes or just make them. Since fishing is free

What do you do though?

Sell the sweet fluid as just that or make them into fishing shots and sell them?

Sweet fluids are a quest item so you can't seel them.

You exchange them with the fisherman guildsman for fishing shots ng through sg. So, the first thing I do is see if anyone is buying fishing shots. If they are, that's the grade of shot I turn my sweet fluids into. If no one is buying I just turn them into A-grade shots. When selling back to the guildsman, they are calculated out to give you the same return whatever shot grade you have, since the number of shots you get per sweet fluid is on a scale based on grade.

So yes you have to convert the sweet fluids to shots before selling. Not a whole lot of money in most cases, but it's like free money on top of whatever else you've been doing with your time.

Now if you are seeding and spoiling with the quest on? ...

But meh, most people would rather complain that there is no way to make money in this game.
Another caveat to the sweet fluid quest is that it seems to zerg other quests occasionally.

I have removed the quest as I was having a tougher time then others in getting quest related drops.

But until then I would do as has been said.

The best part about turning in the fluids and selling them is that the same NPC does both.

So you empty your fluids (just sounds nasty) And then sell the shots to the fisherman guy.

It adds up very fast.
