Temple Knight v.s Paladin

General Discussion Started Last reply 10 posts
So, as far as post lvl 40 goes, grouping, soloing, tanking in raid boss groups, 1 on 1 pvp and group pvp, buffs, gear, skills and so on, what are the pros and cons of both? Which one is definitivly better then the other in which catagory? I hit 40 today and my Elven Knight is now a Temple Knight. Thus far im having a blast tanking RBs. I went from 1 - 40 in about 14 days just doin RBs from 20 on. Now im not so ignorant as to think the rest of the game will be like from 20-40, but i hope i will be able to continue leading RB groups, lvling at a nice pace and do my job as a tank.

Anyone have a end game TK or Paladin that can share some expierences they have had, why they feel they are better or worse then the other? Thanks guys, apreciate the feedback.

Beats me, my tank is an SK and only lv 50, but generally my opinion is that LEs suck.

Well isnt that nice of you to say. If hes enjoying himself as a TK, more power to him, we need more TK's in the game, SK's are a dime and a dozen.
Well im not quite end game yet but ill tell you my experiance as a paladin, pvp and pve also some things I have read from 70+ TK's and Paly's.

Firstly Raid Boss Tanking, Your class is superior in most ways. One on One tanking situations, guardstance and your high dex will reduce damage alot faster than a paladins.

AOE Tanking, the paladins Higher Con, and getting Aegis stance as a toggle will give my class the edge in AOE tanking.

PvP neither of us have alot of tricks in our hat, however elves lack of any type of stun, and no offensive skills like the Shilen Knight, your class is at a larger disadvantage. However for longevity in combat, at end game, with touch of life, I have heard of many TK's being successfull. New stuff in C5 seems to favor the paladin in more unique Abilities, AOE Root, Angelic Icon to name a few. Paladins ability to double as a combat healer also gives them a PvP roll.

If Raid tanking is your cup of tea, you are the best class for it.
Ahh good stuff good stuff. I enjoy 1 on 1 and group tanking very much. All i do when im out lvling is run raid boss groups. So if Raid Boss tanking is what TKs are best at, then im super glad i chose a TK xD.

Thanks for the info guys,

Temple Knight all the way :D
But I have no idea :o
Temple Knights do get Sprint tho, and everyone does love speed so with a LEs natural speed + sprint = Godlike speed

I guess this coment does not help what so evertho

Sprint is just ww2. Even with a 2box, TK solo sucks. Basic party, human tanks have majesty and can hold higher average pdef. Raid party, higher short term pdef for the TK, but at the cost of mana to rechargers and your hating. PvP, the TK cubic can heal in party, but only the lowest hp member. Paladin also gets touch of life at high level. We also get sacrifice which can be an excellent emergency heal in a bad situation. Come C5, however, the Paladin is picking up a lot of new skills that may weigh in. Banish, Angelic Icon, Mass Shackle are all Paladin unique.

If you are going to solo, a TK is a tough route. Patk is all that matters when you solo. Damage damage damage. Killing faster means more exp per time and it means the mob dies faster so it hits you less. If you have no problem with parties, enjoy the TK. If you solo, I'd dump the light elf. If you pvp, you may want to check out the new skills Paladin are picking up. We may go from pvp healer to pvp *cause a complete mess.*

This is in addition to other comments. Take them as a whole.
Ive played a 62 TK.. and they are a great tanking class. Having that extra run speed TKs have means you can usually stay one step ahead of any idiots in your group who dont respect your tanking authoritah!. Life's never boring as a tank lol.

TKs are great AoE tanks. With passive Shield Aegis, we dont have to give up shield pdef to block 360 degrees. We also have more HP than SKs, meaning we live slightly longer.

The major downside to TKs is that we're a frakenstein tank (in my opinion anyways). A mixture of all the other tanks with an extra point of dex added on for good measure. We have the same defensive skills as an SK, same heal (but self only) as paladins, we have cubics like an SK (just only 2 of them), an AoE root (which is pretty much an undead version of what pallys get in C5), and we get pallys holy armour toggle. We have no real skills that set us apart from the other tanks in the game other than the usual LE racial skills (self heal, ww2, mdef 3, entangle). We do have the highest shield defence rate in the game... which is great and all. But sadly that doesnt get you groups.

For raid bosses, we're a great tank to have around... though later on in the game there are severly less raid bosses around *cough*. TK is a fun class though, and rewarding to play, and you'll find that although TKs are pretty much there to annoy your opponent in large scale pvp at the moment, in C5 they'll have much more of a pvp role (hopefully.....) with the ability to hate another player.

I find that people group you not so much because of you class, but because of your skill.. especially with a tank. In PvE, the difference between classes isnt all that huge... but the difference between a good tank and a bad tank in terms of players is. One of the best tanks Ive ever played with was a TK. Another tank I play with a bit is an SK, and both are great at tanking. The worst tank Ive ever played with was a pally (not you luke :P ).. which doesnt say anything about the paladin class. Just goes to show that a bad player can make any class bad if they dont know how to play it. If you show yourself to be good at tanking, people will group you regardless of your tank class.

One day NC will give us some unique skills, and make us a tank that people look out for.
I have an end game Phoenix Knight (Paladin), and I have seen, played with, and talked with other end-game TK's.

In my opinion, it is entirely all about how you play the game.

In terms of effectiveness in pvp, neither a Paladin or a TK are absolutely awesome, they are both fairly docile creatures in a fight, when you compare them to the other toons in the game.

Their strong points come in soaking damage during raids, sieges, and just being a big pain in the butt for everyone else on the field (note: the lvl of pain is relative to how far apart the enemy is, and how effective you can play the class...but its generally not that much of a pain :( )

Shield block on both Paladin and TK is exactly the same with the appropriate shield buffs, that pretty much everyone in the game has access to at one time or another at the higher lvls, so its not really worth going into a discussion, nor using shield block rate as an argument for going TK over Paladin.
Both have 360-degree block, at 100% with bless shield 3+.

Paladins have the capability to be more instantly deadly than TK's in certain situations.
eg. Keeping a healer stunned in a fight, and healing teammates at the same time can cause a pretty big upset in the fight.

But that situation doesn’t present itself all the time, more often than not its ninja gank tactics, or open field fights, very very rarely do you get to prepare and plan your fights.

Sieges.

Paladins are by far the better tank when it comes to sieges.
The in-game avatar is not only physically larger than the elf, making it harder to click around the tank, but paladins also have a hell of a lot more HP than TK's do, with a tiny bit less pdef, making blocking doorways, and inciting people to hit you instead of your buddies a much easier job to accomplish.

Placed right, and played right, Paladins can be far more effective in sieges than a TK.

As far as raid bosses go.
At the higher end, it’s actually more about HP than Pdef.
Bishops being the main healer in a tank group, the more HP you have, the more efficient it is for a bishop to heal with restore life (% heals).

Not to mention that the first few seconds a raid starts are the hardest, with bosses that have minions (minions hitting the hardest) your HP tends to drop real quick, regardless of how much pdef you have.

The higher your HP, the easier it is for your healers to react in time for you to NOT die.

TK's are a nice class, they can be a real pain in the butt with entangle, and being hard to kill, just a little bit harder than a Paladin in pvp, but they just don’t have the support skills they need to be truly considered a support class.

It’s more of a back benched Tank, that NC seems to of forgot about.

:(
Hutch and Charlie give you some solid points up to 75. Its really much of a muchness. I don't have much to add to that.

However, post 76 skill atm bring the TK and the Paladin very closely in line with one other. Pre C5, I think the TK comes off slightly better off with the skill effects. I guess after C5 we'll all have to re-evaluate.

In my personal view the two main skills of distinction Shield Bash at 77 and Magic Mirror at 78 offers a slightly broader defensive capability than a Phoenix Knight's repertoire.
Magical Mirror gives slightly more flexibility to the tank than does physical mirror IMO and the shield bash is certainly worth waiting for.

Other important things to remember post 76. From a TK's perspective:
TK's with MP cost reduction on various patented defensive skills such as Guard Stance and Shield Fortress will begin to experience some nice dividends from what used to be situational skills. I guess Paladins have other skills which would come to the fore but none which affect tanking as drastically as the TK suite.

Sundry suggestions for your TK;
Setup an 2nd box account with a "pocket EE".
The intent here is to further build on the TK's defensive nature, as well as being a second rate duo set up for those times when you have a few min spare and just want to **** some stuff. For all other times when groupped, buffs notwithstanding, having a dedicated recharger considerably improves your TK's performance. (I'd almost go as far as saying that its a must, but that would probably make the TK sound even more gimped /shrug)
