My friend is planning to give me 10k adena to start off with. How does he send me the adena? Is their a mail system? I am an orc, where will I have to go to get the money? Can I retrieve it from the newbie grounds?

1) You can trade from char to char

2) He/she drops it on the floor and you pick it up

There's really no other way to exchange money or items between chars directly without any other chars involved.
He has to go deliver it to you.
He has to go to your village and either trade, drop or buy something from you. But you 2 have to be near each other.
You can, however, use the in-game mail system to send him messages; very useful for asking for more money, which you will undoubtedly be doing because 10k goes depressingly quickly. Look for a clan to join. They can help you out with game basics, class change quests, etc., and you'll find there are opportunities to network with people who can get you hand-me-down versions of gear you will need. There is absolutely no disadvantage to this, and it will help you get more involved with a static group of people, which will make the overall game much more fun.
You can use the gatekeeper to teleport to the "Monster Race Track" which doesn't cost any adena. Your friend can do the same and you can trade. Don't have to waste time or money teleing to each other that way ;).

But, sadly, you can't tele to the monster race track at any of the starter villages.
From the island, just ride the boat. From Orc village, you're kind of screwed. All others have the advantage of being on the main continent. If you need to go somewhere, you can walk if worse comes to worst.
If he drops something you run the risk of someone else picking it up before you do. Have him trade it to you and not drop it.
