So after going years without having anyone try to scam me (I mean really I almost felt left out here!) in one week now I've had two people try it.
One was someone doing the "I'm so and so let me see your weapon" scam and the other was "I'm quitting and I'll give you 25 million if you pass some tests."
Now what I did in both cases was did a shout in general about the person, just in case there was anyone out there that might fall for it.
Is the number of people scamming up or something? I know it's always been around and in the early days it was pretty prolific but I had thought people were not doing it quite so much any more.
"Uh, no. I know <so and so>'s alts, and you're not one of them."
I also like the misspelled names. Like 0lorae. That's a fun one. I carried on a brief but interesting conversation about a month ago.
Olorae: Wow! It feels so strange to be talking to myself.
0lorae: ??
Olorae: I mean, I knew I had issues, but I've never seen them manifest physically!
0lorae: ??
Lol, there was one guy who tried to get me to trade my (insert d weapon here) to him so he could enchant it. He knew this trick, you see.
He invited me to party, I started telling the people in the party that it was a scam. He pretended to be all sad, because I didn't trust him. (It's a game.. trust isn't just.. well, you know.)
I started explaining the scam, and the other people in party were telling me "oooo no, he's legit..."
5 minutes later.. one of them starts screaming that the guy is a scammer.
I pm'd him and said "Bet you wish you'd listened to me now."
I really hate these a$#^&. Some clannies got scammed by it when they used my name. Even though I had nothing to do with it, I felt somehow like it was my fault. Sadly the reason why this scam is still done is because people still fall for it.
and the other was "I'm quitting and I'll give you 25 million if you pass some tests."
I have been playing since OB, and it concerns me greatly when I hear of a scam I never heard of, how does this one go?
I think that one has to do with the person joins you in a party , asks you a few questions (seems legit) about how long youve been playing, cause he wants to "make sure" you really derserve his money....
Then the "test".. wants you to drop you weapon to the ground and you have to pick it up as fast as you can....
Of course your in a party and since hes party leader and its set to "by turn" he gets your weapon as soon as you touch it
Ill try to find the link where I read this... it was a sad storry :(
The person tells you they are quitting and they have lots of adena to give to someone who really loves the game (or is good at it or whatever). They invite you to a party and ask you to drop your weapon and see how fast you can pick it up (or variations on this). What you don't pay attention to is when they made the party it was by turn... and when you drop the weapon, guess who gets it?
In our clan we only trade gear when it's been confirmed on Vent. After putting the gear in the trade window, we'll ask on vent "Can you see that?" or something similar.
When clan impersonators ask to borrow my gear, I kindly remind them that they still owe me 4m, and once they pay that I will lend them whatever gear they want. I haven't had a scammer fall for it yet :(
I don't trade anyone any of my gears unless they are on vent talking to me or I have there char on friends list if they aren't on friends list and not online hen I know it's a scammer :)

That's why our clan has a rule that no one is to trade gear or let anyone "see" it whether they are in the alliance, the clan or not.
If anyone does fall for the scam, they committed a direct violation of our rules on top of being taken in for foolishness.
What else can we do?
My alliance has that rule as well, but people still fall for it. I think the key to this scam is people put such blind faith in their fellow clannies.
:o
My wife and I play together and are in a clan.
Heard about this,,Knew about this..Dam it ...still got nailed.
Our clan had a group together..not grouped yet..and were just tweaking in Teamspeak use that day. Getting ready to maybe Raid or Rift. A lot of activity between us all.
Just when one of us..{ Who realized what was going on {a scam} was typeing news of a scammer using a similar name of one of us via. spelling to scam the equipment trade via. a pm message}..was warning others in clan chat..and over TS,,Bang..too late already happened.
:( It was obvious in the end..either someone two boxing with a newly created name {simlar name} to send the PM and another toon as the Alt to trade the equipment to via. the name scammer instructions. Dam!!!!, so..not only was an individual scammed, it is obvious the Clan was a target with all of our activity in socializing together at our elected gathering spot. {There seeing all the name of clannies and picking a name to spell similar}
:o Personally, we {my wife & I} still feel like fools and are hugely paranoid now. Although this is a game, it must be similar to what it feels like in RL when you get robbed.
We a VERY fortunate to be with a group that backs one another up. Oh they were all mad..but anger was focused on the mechanic and not the indivdual it was exercised on. Our Clan Leader and members jumped to help. !Shouted to warn others outside the Clan as well. Especially due to the Event going on and a lot of others would be gathering similar to us. Actions were taken to help replace loss via. a BS mammon search for a Warehoused weapon trade to make a recovery, and some others from the player base helped from outside of the clan that others group with when not grouping with the clan. Geez the group effort to help was amazing.
Long winded. To the OP..yep it is still happening..forwarned or no.
Honestly the experiance has caused us to play a little less. Not whining here. We got nailed. A game mechanic. We are lucky to have such GREAT clannies, to recover vs. having to re-roll from loss.
Hmmm...maybe if we were able to purchase insurance :p
Anyway, thought about not responding to this thread. Embarresing :o to say the least. Just confirming anyone no matter how guarded can still fall victim as an indivdual or group.
XXX: Let me borrow your weapon, I want to see how my m.atk is with it.
Me: Oh hi XXX, oh sure, no problem, but could you give me the 100K you owe me so I can buy this weapon here real quick before the buyer disappears, then I'll let you borrow the weapon.
XXX: *trades 100K*
Me: Thanks sucker.

Hahahahahahhaha ! Hmmmm, once a player made a char named Darkmotion (on another server) and scammed people into thinking he was me.
Poor trusting Kiranya got caught.
Small reminder : I'll NEVER ask you for stuff. If I do, it's not me. Good greif some people are willing to go so low...
Funny last time I was scam attempted, I was dual boxing and the scammer used a variation of my buffbot name to pm me. I had hard times to make him understand I was playing both so it was hardly my will to fall for it... :(
Also I've seen more revival of the old scam when you want to buy something, shout for it in Giran then get a pm saying "oh well, i got this stuff, but don't need adena, please buy those amulets for me: XX, XXX, XXXX, they might be expensive, but less then my actual gear" and in the minute someone shouts "RARE AMULETS FOR SALE: XX, XXX, XXXX"... Old as Lineage... :)
Hah, I've had people try that on my clannies with characters trying to pass as me. The poor things failed to do their homework, though, since using broken English while trying to pretend to be me (I'm a grammar ****, in case you wondered), talking to clannies to whom I speak exclusively in Finnish was an attempt destined to fail from the get-go. Have fun waiting seven days to get rid of the character :>
On a serious note, anyone who falls for the "u giev mi ur itam plz" scam deserves to lose their stuff. Especially as the scammers usually use the "give the stuff to this other character who just happens to be a good friend of mine and just wants to test it" catch, if that doesn't make you re-check who you're talking to, you probably were bound to lose everything eventually anyway.
To the poster that fested up to being scammed, I imagine that was hard to post, but I think you did well because the best thing we can do as a community is raise awareness. Hell back when this was new, I might have fallen for it if I hadn't read about it on the forums.
Dark, I tell my clannies the same thing, I will never ask for gear; still if you have a good rep, it makes it that much easier for the scammers to scam. Also they seem to do a good job at sniffing out the newly recruited and those are the ones that fall for it the most.
At least I haven't seen anyone fall for it in months.
