Don't use SoulShots?

Player Questions Started Last reply 23 posts
I have been reading through pages and pages of questions about how to make money and everyone says "DON'T use soulshots." Am confused to how/why they affect your adema gain? Don't they just add a bit of dmg boost? I've only been playing a few days and want to make sure I am not making a huge mistake by using them. Also I read somewhere that new Dark Elf Fighters should have 13k soulshots? I've been given 6,600 and I believe that was around level 4-5ish and I am currently lvl 12. Thanks in advance for any help given :) Am greatly enjoying this game
The soulshots you get as a new player are free, but when those run out you have to pay for them. Often the cost of soulshots will be as much as you make in drops.

So that's why people say that.
if you use free non grade soulshot, they of course does not affect you money gain :) but later on, as you will be using d, c and upper grade weapons, you won't receive them free anymore. you will pay for them, and this will influence your money gain greatly... especially in d and c grade where weapons conumes a lot of them and mobs drop not so much money... ;)
As for the rest of the soulshots, you receive them when you do that quest http://lineage2.stratics.com/content/library/quests/quest.php?id=265
just kill one-two imps till you have at least one quest item and return and you'll get more shots.
Also the weapon quests give you shots at lvl 10. But often new players forget that particular quest :)
The free soul shots may as well be burned up in use. They will help you level quicker and you can't do anything else with them and once you hit d-grade they are useless anyway.

Soulshot use is not "always bad". Soulshot use when it is chronic is "always expensive" at lower levels.
It's math. A ng ss is 8 or even 9 adena. If it takes you 4 hits to kill a green mob you will have spent AT LEAST 32 adena. Even if that green mob drops 60 adena--often the next one or two mobs won't drop any money at all.
I like to consider my short term goals. If I'm trying to level quickly and soloing in the Necropolis of Sacrifice--I recognize my goal is exp and not adena so I use ss there. I hunt mobs white to me. Another way to build exp as an alternate is to find thousands of light blue mobs and slaughter them quickly without ss. Necro's are more fun!
If I want to save adena for a purchase (build it up) I try to find mobs green to me that fall with a few non-ss hits.
This seems to work for me fairly well.

Soulshots are not always bad. After the noobie shots are gone they are always expensive. You have to learn when the expense is worth it (like soe use).

i tought fighting green mobs dont have desavantage, that they gave the same xp as a white mob. ?
But i can be very wrong. Isnt it always better to hunt green mobs, even for xp, till they get light blue ?
Or does it only counts for two hitters-nukers ?

nosy
You are correct, there is no disadvantage to hunting green over white. Except that one should hunt mobs that don't take a large bit out of you, no matter the color. Usually that means greens but in some case light blue. However, light blue doesn't always drop adena... at least not as often as green.
Thank you so much for the replies :) I understand a lot better now and can level more appropriately
Levels 1-55ish, consider SS / SPS to be a form of buying experience. You pay adena for the ability to kill faster with less downtime. So not buying them at all is the best way to make money levelling from early on. HOWEVER keep in mind that if you don't buy them, you will be killing twice as slowly with twice as much downtime (say 6 hits to a mob without, 3 hits with, and since you're getting hit the whole time, you will have to rest 2x without), so the early levels will go painfully slowly without SS or SPS. When I say painfully, I really mean it. It's gruesome.
I leveled from 1 to about 40 w/o soulshots. Well, you know, you kill so much slower than, in fact, you don't save money at all, because money comes in 3 or 4 times more slowly (no, the maths aren't wrong, coz you have much longer downtime too). Not using SS is not a good idea.
Hah, I leveled my first char to almost 55 without constant SS usage, only used it on a few hits per mob, if it was needed.. ahhhh the good old Prelude times ^^

No way in hell this statement can be true unless you also used healing pot, soe and telelported everywhere.

Once you run out of the free NG souls shots don't buy anymore. Of course it will take you twice as long to lvl but you will definatley (HAVE) more adena in the end.

Yes you may make the same amount of adena as you would if you used SS but in the end you will have more left to buy equipment because you didn't spend it all on SS.

The problem is new players are so far behind everyone else in the game its discouraging for them. Most of the time the newb areas are baren of toon that will talk to you.

Right now I have 4 people on frinds list who are lvl 20 or below. Half the time they pm me just for someone to talk to. I will be glad when C5 comes out and we have the academy. I think its a great design for the new players. They will have a mentor to help them through the game at lower lvls.

as a new player it's almost impossible to make enough adena to upgrade to top D grade now. When I started Brig helm was 500k, elven mith gloves were 300k. Now Brig helm 3.5mil and EM gloves are 1.5 mil. That is a huge hurdle to get past and people wonder why people ebay. I was lvl 28 before I even got my first D grade sword.

It is not easy to get the adena to upgrade your stuff at any lvl if you dont know how to play the market.

Here are some simple tips for new players.
1)Save all your adena put it in your WH so you dont spend it.

2) Save all the materials that drop from mobs.
a. Some recipes can be sold for 100k or more so never sell them to NPC shop until you know which ones are worth something.
b. All basic materials sell for more than NPC shop so save them until you can set up sell shop in Gludin or even better Dion.
c. Most NG equipment parts and pieces dont sell in PC shop so you can sell them back to NPC shops.

3)Do quests over and over and over and over again. There are quests that give decent adena rewards that are quit easy to do. It's been a long time sionce I did them but look around the boards here you will find out which ones to do.

4) Be very patient with lvling. They game is designed to take years to get to the top lvl's for anyone that is a casual gamer. If you are hard core gamer you most likley wont be reading this so I wont go into my thoughts on HC gamers. So not using SS it will take you twice as long to lvl and sometimes even longer depending on lvl.

5) There is really no need to buy or craft top end D or C grade equipment. Really the different between low end and top end of D and C grade is more the cost than anything else. You can lvl just fine in low and mid grade gear.

6)When it comes to pvp you will be at a disadvantage if you dont have top end gear. But below B grade 95% or your time will be spent lvling. IMO just stay away from pvp until you get into B grade and once you are high enough for B grade most people are in a clan and will have plenty of help for thier B grade.

I dont presume to know it all. THis is just some suggestions to help out the new players. Everyone will play the game for thier own reasons. I just hope this helps out some of the new players so they dont get fed up and quit. Its a hard game to figure out Adena wise but once you master it it will get quite easy to make adena. Just be patient and have fun.
The game has changed so much since I first started way back in Closed beta.. almost nobody would use SS, you had to group to maintain a somewhat decent leveling speed.

One thing though.. price of top D-grade equipment like weapons, and set armor pieces isn't something a newb should ever consider buying. They're simply not worth it! Reserved for extremely "lucky" people, alts or rerolls. Mid D-grade will take you very far.

If you're smart you can make some decent money, and get your first D-grade weapon almost at 20, I did that in OB, back when being a newb was HARD! It's so easy now I can't fathom the difference!

Reasons that it's easier:
-Newbie buffs.
-Newbie shots.
-Newbie upgrades.
-Mats prices are incredibly high compared to back in the old days.
-Manor.

Newbies today are so spoiled :P
Yeah, I remember those days, when I was proud to be using a Bastard Sword and bronze set at 26. I didn't even know what SS were until I hit level 18 :p

EDIT: And even though I can afford it nowadays, I still don't spam them, it just hurts me to literally watch my hard earned money vanish >.< I always NEED to make some kind of a profit when I'm hunting, and the manor sucks on Teon.
Ever since I rerolled at the end of C1, I've been spamming SS, no matter if I solo or group. Losing money was a non-subject for me at that time. Reason was I made a crapload of money on a 60% Bellion cestus craft, and ever since I've been playing the market every day. I rarely make money in PvE, except if I'm solo.

Now I have Draconic bow, and it's so cheap to use, being an archer is good, cheapest SS-usage at later levels :>

Pffff, it's difficult to explain, but I'll try, just bear with my explanation, it's gonna be a bit awkward because it's complicated to explain.

Look at it that way:

case one: you don't use SS, case two, you use them.

In case one, you don't pay for the ss, ok, and you level, let's say, 4 times more slowly ( in my case it was more, but I play a bounty hunter, so I accept the fact that it should be faster for other classes -and no, I wasn't using pots, I was doing the "kill 4 or 5 light blue, then rest" routine).

OK, you level w/o paying anything, so you indeed, theorically, save more money.
Then you start all over again, but you use SS. You pay for the SS, but, in the same amount of time, you kill 4 times as many monsters, hence you get more money, minus the SS. So indeed, you win waaaaaaay less than with SS. Theorically.

Now the catch: on the same amount of time, you'll have spent more adena, but, at least in my case, the adena I looted always made up for the SS, plus some extra. Now, I admit I had much difficulty, when I started using SS, to get to top C grade gear, I had, obviously, much less money than if I had gotten there w/o using SS.
BUT! : would I be there, in fact? I would have less money than I have now, and I wouldn't be B grade yet, to put it simply. I'd be way lower level.
The reality is that until you reach level 50 or more, you don't make much money by grinding all alone anyway. It is, in my humble opinion, much more worthy to use SS, and, why not, buy seeds, and use manor while grinding as fast as possible. The money will flow in faster, because the grinding will be much faster (not just twice, but more, because you deal twice as much damage, and therefore take half the damage you would w/o SS). On one day of farming, you'll get more money by using SS than by using no SS, because you'll have farmed much more.
Now, you may think I'm talking out of my... mind, but this is something I've experimented first hand. There is more adena fluctuation in your inventory, but in the end, the total income is higher because the grinding speed value definitively exceeds the SS cost.
Well, that is my opinion, and I know it was true in my case.

I can also add the side effect that the slow pace is also a pain in the *** and might just disgust you of grinding, and that people will complain at you if you don't use SS in parties. Grinding with SS is still frustrating, but it is way less than w/o, and you don't wanna forget that the main reason you play lineage, I suppose, is to have fun, not to be bored to hell.

Well, that's all I had to say, I hope I didn't step out of my boundaries by sharing my opinion.
Have fun!
Using SS doesn't allow you to kill 4 times as many mobs in the same time. Killing twice as fast means taking twice less damage, this doesn't equal 2*2=4. You can kill 2 mobs in the same time it'd take someone without SS to kill one (if you don't need to run at all, that is) and take the same damage, which means you kill 2 mobs and take damage as if you killed one, in other words, you kill 2 times as fast.

Yes, that was completely unclear, it's late, I'm going to get some sleep now >.<

Well, that's all I had to say, I hope I didn't step out of my boundaries by sharing my opinion.

No you didnt step out of your bounds everyone can voice thier opinion on here. Your opinions are wanted, wether we agree or not thats different.

Im not going to argue the use of SS anymore. Most people do not have the patients to lvl or play without it anyway. From my experience I had more adena without using shots. Now that new players get free shots and buffs its pretty much a non argument anyway.

I remember how happy I was when I finaly got my Falchion was a very good day. Then I got a saber drop in cruma swamp Was so happy. Sold the Falchion to get my brig helm. Now days it would take 5 falchions or more to get the brig helm.

But like alot of people have said dont fall into the "I got to have top gear for each grade trap". You dont need it until B grade and that is only because of pvp. If there was no pvp you could go all the way to end game in mid grade gear. But thats not L2.

Play the manor, save everything you get and sell it when the prices are right.
there is no mid grade once you get to B grade, it's eather top or low.

A grade is the same, so is S grade.

Now that new players get free shots and buffs its pretty much a non argument anyway.

True, I wish I had that back then (started in prelude). Oh, and the newbie buffs... the dwarfy would have loved the newbie buffs (not a single attack skill up until lvl 20, I let you imagine how fun it was).
don't have ot imagine. Cathrynn was my main when I started in c2. no buffs, no adena, no skills, no soulshots. was painful, but fun in tis own way.

there is no mid grade once you get to B grade, it's eather top or low.

A grade is the same, so is S grade.

True but you know what I meant. If there were no pvp in this game you could go all the way to 75 in B grade. Actually you still can just competing against other players is much more difficult if you don't keep up gear wise.
use SS always on your main because no one will party you without SS usage anyway. I dont always use SS on my spoiler and if I do, he is spoiling leather/varnish and that makes more than enough money to make up for SS for both characters.
