Just one 'Scam'

Ok so im in my alliance as usual, having a happy time doing the quest to get ready to take on the Land Dragon (i wont attempt to spell his name or look it up) and lo and behold an ally starts screaming that he got scammed, natrually we all ask what happened, and he said he gave his weapon away to someone for a reason i dont know.

I remained silent, later asking how this is classified as a scam, and not getting a reply.

So my question is:
How is giving someone your items considered a scam? I see no deception in it, but if there was, does that mean people class lying as a scam? (E.g. Gimmie ur wep, ill give it back) Im just curious.

At least he only lost an SLS, could have been worse, he could have been in B/A/S Grade oO
Anything that involves false advertisement (I'm xy, I'll give it back, this soul ore is an A Grade crystal) is a scam. However, not all scams are worth feeling pity for. ¬_¬;
People make mistakes in moments of weakness. It happens.

But the people who do are morons.
Giving your items away is not a scam. Having someone tell you a story that you believe is true which results in you giving them your items and them not giving them back.. that is a scam.

Such examples are:

"hey, I can over enchant your sword with one of my spells. Just throw it on the ground and I will cast it" or,

"hey, can I borrow your sword of uber death? I want to craft one in a few months and would love to see how it looks on my character.

And then they don't give it back.

see?

But that repeats my previous point. Do people think Lying is a scam too?

Most assuredly, you can't have a scam without a lie.
Ok, its just that to me (for reasons i dont know) i think that giving something to someone is not a scam lol.
Deception is the key to a scam. Not all deceptions equate to a scam. All Squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are Squares.

Uhhh....yea?

It's not. I think there is a confusion.

"You" giving something to someone is not a scam. You giving something to someone where they convince you to give it to them with the promise that they will: give it back, enchant it, whatever, and they don't, is a scam that is perpetrated by them.

Scam: To defraud; swindle

Defraid. Swindle by means of Deception?

I think ive caught on now lol.
Scams in this game, for the most part, are based on lies created to convince a player to transfer an object (in this case virtual) to another player who has intentions for the item other than those explained to the player giving the item. Just as well scams can involve services or actions of other sorts. All scams, however involve a lie being used to get a person to do something but not for the reason being given. Or in simple terms, it involves deceit.

It can be considered a scam to become slept by a mob and ask a player to hit you and wake you up out of good will, then in turn, kill the player who flagged in the process of helping you out. Or it can be as simple as being a prophet, asking an SE for an exchange of buffs, but not buffing the SE after being buffed.

Most of the scams that are posted on the boards involve items, as those are unrecoverable and much harder to come by than some buffs or a few xp points. These can involve anything from pretending to be friendly to gain one's trust and then betray them by borrowing gear and not giving it back. Another very common one is using a name similar to someone who has gained someone elses trust and abusing the fact that most players don't look at names closely when being messaged by other players. The impersonating character usually asks to borrow items and runs off with them.

Scams can even be in the form of shops by advertising an item for one price, but displaying an item that merely looks like the advertised item in the shop. The player quickly buys the item without reading the text and later realizes they purchased something other than what was advertised. Similarly players can create craft shops and advertise low prices, and instead charge high prices to those who don't check the actual price being charged for crafting. The list goes on and on. I believe on one board somewhere, there is a compiled list of the most common scams. It is unfortunate that players abuse the good will of others in this way, but theivery in this mannor is just as rampant in the real world today. It's always the buyer beware, and always know who you are dealing with. 99% of scams can be averted simply by being more aware of what is taking place in the transaction.

Falling for a scam does not mean someone is dumb. Most people fall for a scam of some sort in their lifetime. Most of those people learn from their mistake the first time, as well as the mistakes of others. Just know that every time you give an item of yours to another player, no matter what they say, it may be the last time you see it. If you are unable to accept that risk, then do not trade your item to them.
my 3rd or 4th day in the game i just hit level 20. My buddy gave me a bunch of adena and i was just barely able to afford an elven long sword. I was a proud proud owner.

A person could sense my noobness and pm'd me asking if I wanted to be in their clan. I said sure, why not!

So he invited me into party and says to meet him behind the item shop or something. I do that and then he says you need to pass a test of loyalty. He says drop your weapon on the ground I will stand wayyyyy over here so I have no chance of getting it.

Something was suspicious and I kept refusing to do it. He started getting mouthy so I figured it had to be a scam even though I had no idea how he could get my weapon from way over there.

A few days later I found out that some other people had fell for it and that the party leader gets the first 'drop' and he would have gotten my sword.
Age old advice. Don't trust anyone you can't punch in the face. Or as my baby puts it "Nobody handles my weapon but my girlfriend." ;D
Lastest big scam in Gustin. SeanOfAvalon, known ebayer of course, scammed of 120 Million Adena by the old trading swap trick of A grade Helmet. Newb didnt know what hit him, bought a Bronze Helm thinking it was a DC Helm.
you know, i can see hitting 'confirm' trade button seeing helmet profile before realizing it was a cheap helmet. We are often in a hurry.
I just don't understand how anyone would give a somewhat precious item to someone they don't know.
I've been asked to 'let someone see....whatever' a number of times.....as the newest noob in the world it wouldn't have occured to me to give over my hard won stuff.
I know it happens but I don't know how when the scammer is a stranger.
Guess most folks r more trusting than me..........
