Being rather new to the game and not knowing the classes very much I'd like some suggestions to what what class to pick.
Considering I'm in high end raid guild in EQ I just got this game as a diversion to EQ and just relax with something else. And considering I'll prolly only play for a couple of hours per day I don't expect to be grouping much in L2. So having a strong self sufficient solo class would be nice. I have no intentions on racing my char to high lvl or anything. Just having some relaxing times in L2 (c;
When writing suggestions would you please use the full names of the classes and items? Since I'm new I don't know any of the abrevietions of the classes or items for that matter.
Maybe a server suggestion aswell.. I find myself lagging alot on Teon for some reason.
Though if you are only going to play a few hours a day, eventually you will have to face the fact that the xp will go down drastically. Welcome to the game.
Of course, you could get your EQ guild to come here ;)
Don't use weapons over your mastery level. Sub 20, non grade, 20+ d-grade, 40+ c-grade.
Summoners are good solo class, but you have to play as a nuker until 40, that will take some time. dark elf nukers are very capable of going long hours without any downtime, sorcerers are decent I guess, but got no experience really. Necromancers (human nuker 2nd class change) are kinda like spellhowlers (Dark elf nuker 2nd class), but are more expensive to level efficiently, because of certain spell-costs.
You can see here that people mostly talk about nukers when it's about solo, because they level faster at later levels than fighters. Archers can do pretty decent solo as well, but silver rangers are best at it with their selfbuffs and speed.
Great solo class is destroyers, they have a ton of hp and attack damage, there criticals hurt alot. good server for you is servers 6 and above. ( the newer servers)
I think I wil lgo for DE wizard and my friend who also just got the game will start a Orc fighter. Since he has more time to play I bet he will outlvl me fast so we decided not to even consider team toons.
God I'm sorry to be bothering with question again.. but as darkelf caster.. what weapon is best to use? Staff or .. what was the other weapon? Etch or something.

for 1-20 don't worry about it. You will most likely be 1 or 2 shotting mobs anyway. Remember to kite the mobs. This is not Wow where you stand there nuking until somethign is dead.
As you get higher in lvl you will notice that nukers prefer one handed weapons and a shield in the other hand. Unless you go summoner in which case that is a whole different ballgame.
At pre-first class change levels, any weapon would do, but I would suggest a dagger or a blunt over a staff. If you cannot afford a shield, don't worry. I find that shields, bows, boots and jewelry are the most common drops at this level.
The reason why I suggest the dagger is because as a mystic you will inevitably run out of mana. When you do, you can melee any greens and light blue monsters that are around, thus no down time. And don't worry, lesser heal pots and antidotes are the other more common drops at this level. Enjoy being a mystic.
After level 20 you'll be in D grade, and it will be up to your playing style and your purse as to what gear to get. I suggest saving up for your weapon and getting that before you get your robes.
A Staff of Life or Atuba Mace is nice, but you can get by with a Goatshead Staff just as well. D grade is the last grade that you'll be able to one shot mobs your level without empower, a highly enchanted weapon or both.
As for armor, some say Knowledge Set for it's increase in magic attack and others say Mithril Set because of it's higher mana and faster run speed. I chose Mithril back in the day. A friend chose Knowledge. I levelled faster. :D
Finally at C grade, get your grubby little hands on any 101 or higher m.atk weapon with the Acumen Special Ability (SA) on it. Your armor doesn't matter. As I said earlier, whether Demon or Karmian... or even Divine... you're not going to be able to one shot anything unless you have empower 3 and a highly enchanted weapon. The question of damage is more pertinent to groups, but less so solo. You will 2 shot most mobs your level with blessed spiritshots (not including multiple hp mobs) no matter what. Karmian was my armor of choice, but that was before weapon SA's and the abundance of demon gloves.
