I just recently started playing lineage 2, I played it back in beta a little bit, and while the game was gorgeous, there didn't seem to be enough at the end-game to appeal to me. That seems to have changed quite a bit, so I felt I'd give it another try.
Myself I have played either the beta, trail version, or full version of just about every MMO made since Meridian 59, up to and including more recent fare like WoW/EQ2/D&D/CoH/CoV etc. Not that I'm flighty, my main games were Meridian 59, then UO, then EQ, then SW:G, and most recently most of my time was spent in WoW. I've hit end-game in all of the above listed games, and had quite a bit of fun doing so, often being in leadership in some form, and often in the best guild of whatever server I played on. Out of game I work a fairly earlyish job, and enjoy my game-time, as well out of game activies such as reading, TV, writing, and hanging out with friends etc. So now you know a bit about me and my playhistory.
My question in regards to Lionna is how friendly is it (and L2 in general) in terms of newly starting players? I'd imagine I would have quite a learning curve in terms of verbiage, item types, strats etc. But overall how formidible is the learning curve, and how hard can I expect it to be to find a good guild (clan?) to join up with. I don't mind solo play, either PvE or PvP, but I much much prefer group play. I've heard good things about Lionna in terms of it having some RP'ers (which I quite enjoy from time to time). I'm also curious of where Lionna stands in terms of farmers, both low level, and the kind that actually do raids (the whole idea of farmers raiding freaks me out btw). Thinking of rolling melee, even though I hear they are pretty gimped in 1v1 pvp here, but I generally prefer melee or hybrid classes. Specifically from what I've seen I'm planning on going Dark Avenger as a human.
Any suggestions and information would be extremely welcome. Thanks!
PS. Yes, generally I am quite verbose, I try to contain myself most times, but I do enjoy conversation, about just about anything really. Look for me as Ultenth in game if you want to just chat!
Lionna is a pretty **** good server there are lots of friendly people here there are also lots of unfriendly ones so you get your ups and downers... there are lots of clans on this server some are pretty active some arent.. oh well.. if you wanna have some fun hit me up benzito or another person nicenv also if you want a hybrid toon go for a tyrant they are a very versatile class.. but if you want to crap on people roll an archer or a mage... its that simple...
Not so much worried about the politics yet as I am the people, but good to know. Wish starting zones weren't so empty though, but I hear it picks up once you leave them. :(
Any advice on the whole 2 account thing? A lot of people are suggesting I get a 2nd account with a prophet or something on it. I plan on playing a DA, so I imagine my soloability will be kinda low. Do I really need to do this or can I rely at least somewhat on getting decent groups for leveling instead?

heh thats a very good idea, i am a 67 Shilien Knight, your tank counterpart, and it is mere impossible to not only level at my level, but also find groups out of my clan... People really have no need for tanks in the high levels seeing as a SWS or BD can act as a tank...
Tanks get no love in this game...
I have a Prophet 2nd account, which makes me able to solo... its slow... but its still +xp's
Should I consider not rolling a tank then? If it is indeed true that they are so gimped in this game that they are not even used for the one thing they are good at (tanking) is there really no point in rolling one?
IMO no, there is not much of a point... i am goign to grit my teeth and try and grind out the rest of my levels... but its difficult... if u want to go melee, hmm BladeDancers are great melee, they always get groups, and are awesome at soloing, especially if u have a prophet buffing you...
thats the only melee class i would really suggest going... Daggers are nice, Archers are also very very nice, they do lots of damage and can also solo pretty well
Any good websites out there that I might not have found already that have detailed descriptions of playstyles of classes? How do hybrid or pet classes fare in this game? Or is it all about nukers and archers at the moment?
Actually as far as tanks go DA is the most solable due to their pet though i think SK can fare ok as well. The problem is that tanks are not a necessity for normal hunting. They are great for raids but it's hard to level just on raids. Tanks, especially DA's are getting a decent number of cool PVP skills in C5 and if you get a decent clan yuo shouldn't have too many problems especially since DA DOES have damage potential.
Are there any classes that are fairly true hybrids? (50% mele 50% magic?) And all I ever heard about are nukers and archers or buffers, how exactly do pet classes fare in pvp and pve?
there are no pet classes unless u talking about summoners, Necromancers are the best summoner pet as of now, but i hear they are getting the big NERF in c5, i hear warlocks are to be up and coming...
the most versatile magic, 50%magic, 50%melee, i would have to say is the Warcryer, they are great buffers, and they can also put out a fairly good amount of damage, they also have magic skills such as hold and sleep and i think a few debuffs
As stated, the class fitting best the type of hybrid you are looking for is one of our green brethren, the warcryer. I play a warsmith and felt quite at home when doing a warcryer as a subclass on the test server, given it's blunt weapon specials and heavy armor masteries. But unlike with my warsmith, I all of sudden needed all those hotbars for the dazzling number of other (magical) skills. :p
That said, you should play foremost what you think you will enjoy, not what you or others think will be the most wanted/easiest class (only to be changed in the next chronicle). Speaking of which, tanks will become a lot more useful in PvP (esp. sieges) in C5, so not all hope for them is lost.
Make sure to post your decision on what to play and ingame name here, so we can all come to the respective starter area and clobber you, er, bestow our advice and trinkets upon you. :p
ok, so tanks become more useful in sieges... but... how can we be useful if no one wants to level us... lawl... at lvl 67, i cant find groups outside of my clan, it is possible to play this game and level w/o the most important factor...
WoW may be [censored], but u NEED tanks in an instance... you NEED healers... this game needs to be fixed
As a 65 DA, I gotta say ... it's impossible to level without a clan. I never have a problem getting a group in my clan/alliance though. The only reason I don't level more quickly is that I don't play enough and like to kamikaze in seiges. Somehow the sight of enemy flags gets me all ....
excited
:D
If you go tank, I'd choose either DA or SK. I always thought the SK could solo better, but a DA can do it with their kitty out. Problem is ... panthers are EXPENSIVE. I eat C crystals like candy during solo sessions and seiges. I try to never solo and I'm blessed with a clan that doesn't let me. For PvE tanks rock. Sure, higher levels can grind without a tank, but my groups get better xp faster. :) If you've ever grouped with a good tank, you'll figure out their value.
ok ok ... the other reason I'm still so low is I have this slight alt problem....
Sounds like what I'm kinda looking for, I generally prefer group activites over solo for the most part, but being able to solo somewhat is a nice treat. Currently I think I'm going for that, now I just need to find a good clan etc. If you wanna say hi I'm always willing to chat.
Char is Ultenth, currently level 15 tonight I will be slaughtering spiders on the starter island, feel free to send me a tell so I can annoy you with tons of newbie questions I haven't been able to find answers for on forums/websites. :)
Thanks for the few people that helped me out with some questions and other assorted help, and just the conversation (Low levels are lonely). Was really kind of you to chat me up, and its appreciated, starting a new MMO, especially one in progress can be a real chore sometimes, hehe.
