Summoner duoing?

A while back a friend of mine wanted me to start a character up to play with him on Lionna. He loves orcs, so he made a Raider, and I made a Shilien Oracle since it seemed it would go well with him. After a while though, I kinda got dissatisfied with how the duo went...he's plowing through things, hardly ever needing heals while I'm sitting on my hands waiting for the next buff round. And I don't even have Vampiric Rage for him yet!

Knowing my love for pet classes (and the Dark Wizzie I'm trying to level up on another server for this purpose,) he asked me if I'd rather level up a wizard to go for summoner and play that with him. I told him I'd think about it.

My question is basically...how feasible is this? I read a while back that servitors tend to generate more hate than the damage they deal suggests, but I somehow doubt they'd be able to hold aggro from a Raider/Destroyer considering the ludicous damage those big green guys deal...which would be ideal considering the servitor could be healed. Is there a particular summoner that'd work better in this situation than the others? If a pure summoner doesn't work, what about a Necro or DA? Should I just give up on the idea and get used to being my friend's buff-bot?
I would say dark wizard going summoner is your best choice. If you choose Necro your friend will be mad lol as you will kill things 10x faster than him. If you choose DA, you will both kill slowly. If you choose a phantom summoner, not only will you kill at about the same pace, but phantom summoners also get a healing summon which will be perfect for the two of you. And you can buff your summon, you just won't be able to fully buff your orc friend anymore. You still get might1/shield1 though :D and some battle heals if you really wanna heal him. Not to mention you can choose to nuke as a summoner using your dark wizard skills, or you can choose to pick up a dagger/sword and melee next to him. Plus my all time favorite. Cubics. You will get cubics for yourself, and mass cubics for an entire party if you can afford em. Pick summoner and good luck!

Ps: If you do become a phantom summoner, tell your orc friend to get one of the new pets to heal him. It absorbs exactly 10% exp. And you can use a summon that also absorbs 10% exp. That way you wil both lvl at the exact same pace, and plus the pet can help heal him. It's worth it!
The healing pet is nightshade and takes 5%, the 10% pet is the Soulless which is a vey hard hitting DD.
Glad you picked PS they are an awesome class. Make sure that you are using him & expect to use him only for PVE. Cuz come C5 they will be nerfed a bit & wont be as good for PVP. For PVE & leveling with your friend hey will be awesome. I wish you all the luck have fun :D
Hmm, can you do polearm parties together with Soulless AoE? :D
He'd be better off using the nightshade in AOE. The poison is slow acting and the corpse burst is too weak to be of very much use even using SpS.

If you choose a phantom summoner, not only will you kill at about the same pace, but phantom summoners also get a healing summon which will be perfect for the two of you.

Please note that you will not be able to do both at the same time.

If you want more to do (so no SE) but also want to have a viable duo at higher levels, I would give the Warcrier a look-see. A totally unbuffed Destroyer at higher levels is not going to be rolling as smoothly as a full-buffed Raider at low levels.
Thanks for the replies all!

Dang, PS was what I was going for on my Dark Wizzie on Devianne, don't really want to make *another* one on Lionna. So Warlock or ES won't work?

I looked at the Shaman/Warcrier...lots of DoTs and stuff that probably wouldn't work well with a Raider/Destroyer wrecking things. I dunno, surely a duo doesn't require a buffer to be viable?
no but it certainly helps. If uyou want a summoner for a duo might i suggest warlock, they get a fantastic buffer pet at 56 that will compliment a destroyer quite well.

But won't that just put me in the buff-bot role again? :-/ What do the buffs from the Cat Queen and Uni. Seraphim do anyway?

Perhaps I'm expecting too much...
Queen casts a bvuff that is both focus and DW and Seraphim can do a mp regen buff and a reuse time buff. I forget the second Queen buff.

Everything in Lineage2 requires buffs to be viable and i'm not joking. Most ppl wouldn't even consider to leave town without buffs and thats why alot of ppl run around with buffbots. You only have 3 options
a) become friend with somebody that loves to buff you
b) get another account, lvl up the SO up to 58 - use for buffs, heals once in a while and also lvl yourself another toon you prefer to play
(so you'd be a trio with 2 persons playing for a while)
c) become a warcryer - and i'm confident you're fundamentally mistaken if you believe it wouldn't fit to a fighter. warcryer get all required buffs, you minimize buffing time as they are party buffs and warcryer can deal out damage themselves. the DoTs are situational stuff and nothing you're going to level with.
If I wanted to be a buff-bot, I'd play a Prophet. If I wanted to be forced to get a second account for a buff-bot, I'd have continued playing Dark Age of Camelot.

And forget the Warcrier's buffs. What other skills does the class possess? Very little that I see that'd be frequently used for levelling (life drains aren't used much with Vamp Rage and a Raider/Destroyer tanking, DoTs don't deal damage fast enough, stuns unreliable)...sure, the Warcrier would be more powerful in melee than an SO/SE...but it'd be just as *boring*, which is what I'm trying to get out of.

I frequently see posts on these forums that talk about nukers and summoners that level unbuffed. So what's the problem here? I don't mind slower levelling, I just don't want to fall asleep at the keyboard and I'm certainly not going to pay for another account.
well u 100% want to be a magic user? or could you go for a melee class like a tyrant or a destroyer?

or just make a battle prophet so you can buff both off you and still get in there and help out.
Actually warcrier is an incredibly powerful class. I've been in trios with one since lvl 50 and honestly i can't think of a better partner. He has all the buffs i need, the DOT is NOT slow it does a ton of damage in a small amount of time and the WC lifedrain is impressive to say the least. Also, saying that their damage output is above a SE is putting it lightly, they deal very good damage and are always buffed which will make an incredible difference.

Summoners and and to a lesser extent nukers are designed to be solo classes. DEstroyers are not and trust me you'll be probably busier managing a WC than a summoner and i can tell you that from experience. Yes summoners can solo like fiends without buffs but we dont' get good XP, our benefit is in that we have a permenant duo partner and we never ever have to rest. Your destroyer friend does not have that luxury and eventually the two of you will ahve to begin resting to accomodate him.

Since you're from DAOC i'll relate teh classes. Honestly i find the playstyle of the Phantom summoner very similar to a bonedancer or possibly a minstrel w/ a pet. you summon and usually fight along side your pet acting as it's healer and tank.

The Warcrier on the oterhand is more akin to a Skald or Friar. A good melee and magic character but with crucial party buffs that make you everyone's friend.

I often promote summoners to people who like versatility but in all honesty the warcrier is the same in that respect. They can fill multiple roles at once and do all of them quite well.

If I wanted to be a buff-bot, I'd play a Prophet. If I wanted to be forced to get a second account for a buff-bot, I'd have continued playing Dark Age of Camelot.

Who said that Lineage2 behaves different in this way?

erm... PvE is boring grinding. Which exactly exciting things does a Destroyer do in PvE? I have a hard time to believe that at higher level a Destroyer can run around unbuffed and never needs a heal. Warcryer have a group heal, a stun skill, a sleep spell, dots, a long range drain and buffs. What else do you want? Spam a high damage special? They offer a versatility only few classes come close. If you want to support a group and do something - nothing comes as close to this as a warcryer.

Summoners are never unbuffed. They get skills to buff their pet and even summoners have buffbots. And mages kill through their high damage output and high range. If you 2 shot mobs at the edge of the screen, what exactly does your destroyer partner do? Both classes are rather considered solo classes then something to duo with.
More correctly summoners ARE buffbots for their pets. Trust me it's not as exciting as it sounds and it's actually a bit of work to keep it interesting after 65 or so.

Buffs are not some kind of luxury they are a necessity in this game. Pre-40 it really seems like this as most people do solo but I can assure you it changes quickly. If you want to have a successful group and a great character for PvP, hunting, and anything else you want to do go with a warcryer.

It is as far from boring as you can get in this game. I say that because ANY class gets boring and turns into a little routine you do non-stop for a few hours. The big thing comes up when some guy decides to kick you out of your spot. Warcryer ftw!
Then perhaps this simply isn't the game for me. Thanks anyways, everyone.
buffs have only become a neccesity because people have made it that way...and its unfortunate in way that ncsoft almost supports this...by giving us bigger badder 4x health mobs that need ss and the likes to bring down...in truth b4 all these big baddies came out you could go out and fight normal mobs and the fastest way was simply to fight greens or blues...now its fight the big white thing and dont do anything else, so its almost like your forced into it...if that makes sense :p i'd encourage you to try a few summoner classes...its easy stuff to hit lvl 20 especially if you constantly use mage stuff :p just transfer the gear...find a class you like and play that one...as for the buffs and stuff...with a bunch of pots i can get by without them...id imagine so could your giant orc friend
I wrote such a good post responding to this question before, but after i previewed it the power disapeared . Now i'm gonig to Do it again now..

These are things I do with my WC. My set up is heavy armor, robe and twohander sword (enchanted) and +4 str/-4con tatoo.
solo
I wear heavy for solo. Here are the skills I use:
-buffs, use ALOT of mana, chalanging to balance use of other skills for non stop hunting and having mana to rebuff on time.
-drain, decent damage and goot % oh hp returned, now on green nonmage resistant mobs i hit for around 1k damage, that's around 800 hp restored.
-Soul Cry, a togle skill which adds damage, at 58 it adds probably close to 200 patack. My patack record is 921 patack fullybuffed ^^
-Poison (freasing flame, chil flame and what ever else it is at lower levels, havent learned venom skill), I rarely use it now, but in 30th-40th I used it allot, at lvl 40 it did about 1k damage in 15 seconds. Many mobs are brought to a few hp in one poison. Now I'm geared towards mele fighting, so mage stuff is less eficient for me then mele fighting.
-Sleep, extreemly rarely, with my cast speed in heavy armor usualy it's more eficient to just mele most of the time.
Duo, trio or what ever else small party
WC get VR2 at lvl 58, VR1 is not enought to maintain hp of fighters, and WC heal is mp expencive, same as almost everything else and they aren't too fast to cast. It is easier to tank mycelf and self heal using drain. Up to now I have decent chance to hold agresion of mobs of enoughf time from most classes, only one's I have major problems with are archers, they hit hard and crit allot and VR doesnt heals them. For other dd's such as dagers, destroyers and tyrants I can hold AT least half way through the mob, and that's enoughf to maintain their HP almost without my heals.
Skillls same as solo, only add a few heals and even less sleeps.
Duo mystic style. After I got VR2 I tryed few times to duo in highly populated area with destroyer. I wore robes that time.
-Buffs
-Some heals
-Soul Cry
-Few drains for after I agroed mob mycelf
-Sleep, alot of it.
-Some poisons, mostly for pulling purposes.
It was realy differend from how I played before and it was prety fun. WC is a realy werstile class :D
Large Party. Only large parties I'm in are from clan/alliance, so we rarely have "perfect groups". We mostly have an OL and a boxed SE with us, and often also have a Bishop. So we share buffs, acording to who got higher level buff. I mostly do only around 4 buffs then.
Then I use allot of soul cry to do most damage and little bit of all the other stuff I use inother situations.
AOE parties. There I play a true Lasy Buffer. I do buffs and throw a few heals when I feel like it. We almost always got a Bishop with us for heals. Rest of the time I socialise, entertain my party members, or just read something. It's just doesnt makes a difference if I'm hiting one mob there when our "boys" (warlords, dwarf and destroyers with spears) are hitting 10-20 or what ever mobs at a time. Snd not like I whant to get into the way of a bunch AOE attacks at onse there, so I prefere to sit :o
