Assassin's generally wear light armor. They get the passive Light Armor Mastery skill, which increases their evasion value along with defense slightly.
You could get by wearing heavy early on before the masteries take effect, and it wouldn't be completely ineffective even later on. Generally I would reccomend sticking to your class's skills and going with light however.
