As Jute said, there is a quest for lvl 35+ characters to get a baby dragon. There are three types of baby dragons, each one has an special ability. After you lvl up your baby dragon to lvl 55, you can do a quest to "make him a big guy" and get an strider. Striders are rideable. Striders can envolve into Wyvers (which can fly), but only castle lords are able to get one.
Could have something to do with me only having done it once heh. I had some trouble finding the wyverns, and it took forever getting the quest items. And there seemed to be a lot of running around over all ?

What server? Let me know when you want to go do it, and I'll come lead you around so long as you keep me alive.
Level 35 quest eh? Dang, I am not even level 30 yet. Just started playing again and I am leveling as best I know how, but probably not the best way. Level 25, doing the ROD. Bugbear warriors mostly. Average 900 XP, can get over 1100 if I over hit but that kills my MP fast and I can only do it once in a while. Mostly I use the best equipment I can afford thanks to the generosity of others (Some of it is hand-me downs, and some of it is bought) and a lot of DSS. I dont think any of it is best, but I do OK with it against bugbears :) (Is it just me, or did the devs really beat them with an ugly stick when they were created? lol)
You can't "effectively" level a hatchling as a Nuker/Archer.
Believe me, I've tryed as I have both a archer main and a nuker alt.
Some of the best classes to level baby dragons (in order of their importance) are:
Battle Prophet + any hatchling
SE + Star Hatchling
Tank(w/ Hate) + Any hatchling
Any other Melee toon + any hatchling
Archers + any(?)
Nukers + any(?)
Problem is, Archers, Nukers, Daggers and Tyrants kill far too quick to make it effective. Lots of time, your pet will snag aggro, and be insta-killed.
Another note, leveling a pet is very expencive. Things to consider for the pet expences are:
Armor
Weapon
Food
Best Soul/Spirit Shots
Blessed Pet Rez scrolls
That's why when you see like Star and Wind striders for sale, they are usually for sale for over 100m cause it takes a lot of adena to make lvl 55 on the dragon, and a lot of dedication/time.
As an alternative, you could level a wolf. Wolves of equal level to a hatchling are actually stronger and cheaper. Start the quest at the pet manager in Gludin.
Archers or daggers have a very hard time levelling pets. Your best bet are those suggested above or, for wolves, a mix of those and dwarves. I hear bounty hunters do really, really well.
On a related topic, what is the wolf with the best defensive abilities (The best tank)? If I am going to try to level something up, I want it to survive more than one hit.

Even in top Armor wolf pdef is lacking. Eventually it gets enough HP to take a hit or two...but three is almost always out of the question. And any special/nuke is pretty much an insta-kill.
The pet with the most defensive ability to my experience is the Wind Hatchling. It even gets a UD skill for those times when the fecal matter hits the rotary air impeller. So far they have worked fine up through the early 40's on my Dwarves. Late 50's though is when things start getting nasty.
personally i've got my fingers crossed that in c5 or more likely c6 :p that they'll change the way the pets level to the same way cougars and such level...its much easier and less dieing on the pets behalf...
Not all the dagger/bow classes have a hard time leveling the pets. SR or PW isn't to bad. They get entagle which causes lots of aggro. Cast it a couple of times and let the pet wail away on the mob =P
Think about the poor Light Elves before you complain about your usless buff! =P
I'd definaletly rather have an SE to level a pet with. But, I aint levelin a healer = \
I never said it was useless. I just said that no dark elf in their right mind would use it. I mean, Eva's the usurper! She took the mantle of water after it was stripped from the true ruler of all.
<grumbles more>
I actually cast it all the time, but I have a good IC tweak for it.
Rikku0: Wth you just gave me Kiss of Eva and your a dark elf? >.>
Olorae: No, thats breath of shilin.
Rikku0:....im looking at the buff right now..it says kiss of eva.
Olorae: ITS BREATH OF SHILIN, DEATH TO EVA AND ALL LIGHT ELVES MAUAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHA <goes spastic and starts dancing and spitting saliva all over the place>

I really love Kiss of Eva. Whenever someone would ask for buffs from my EE friend when she had full recs. She'd just buff the person with Kiss of Eva. Oh god that always was hilarious. They diserved it for asking an EE for buffs anyways = \
