the tattoo debate -4 vs -5

evening all!

now that a lot of people can consider wearing these sometimes expensive and dramatic stat changing items, i would like to state some of the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of tattoosin regard to the one big thing they all boil down to : the price tag.

if you arent familiar with the merchant of mammon's tattoo list or his pricing guide, please read the stickied thread in this section that states the pricelist of each dye as they modify +1-1 to +4-4.

now that youre familiar with that, let me begin by saying that you COULD buy the +4-4 dyes for 1.74m AA - thats 5.22m adena @ 3a/aa (+the cost of drawing [around 600k]) PER +4-4 tattoo, OR you could spend 45k per dye (450k per tattoo and 400k or so to draw) for a +4-5 tattoo.

cost ratios if you dont count drawing the tattoo : 5.22 /.45 = 11.6 :1

11.6 to 1

@.@

now i pose the question : WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND GOES AND BUYS DYES FROM MAMMON ANYMORE?

at 12:1 cost per tattoo ratio its INSANE to pay extra to get +4-4 vs +4-5

so you got 1 less men or con, BIG HAIRY DEAL!!! YOU SAVED 4.75 MILLION ADENA!!

ok so maybe your server doesnt have the AA issues that mine does, and ppl still sell for 2a /aa - the numbers dont change that much - now 1.74m aa = 3.48 M adena

that brings it down to 3.48 :.45 or for you ratio nuts 7.73 :1

now instead of saving 4.75m adena, you save 3.03 M adena.

WOW that didnt affect it that much.

now lets ask ourselves who goes and buys TWO +4-4 tattoos? i mean HONESTLY!! THATS AT THE MINIMUM A SAVINGS OF 6.06 Million adena that could have been spent on a set of C armor. or at the very least, a new Low C weapon +0.

stack the dyes and i can see where people start to get leery of the -5 part of the scale - at -10men youre dipping quite low in the mana regen end, at -10 STR you can pretty well kiss soloing goodbye mr paladin. youre a meatshield now.

even -10 con is scary for any orc; sometimes you gotta be thankful for -8 ... but seeing the pricetags of +4-4 i will never outfit any toon in them again. my adena is too valuable for that.

what say you, though, oh generous and wise public?
There are two things in you post that makes me to suggest that you are better off with the -5 ones:

1. You don't consider the price of drawing when you calculate your -4/-5 ratio.

2. You haven't posted the price of green seal stones on your server.

In short, you are not expected to have the money for -4 ones if you make such mistakes.

Add the costs of finding the mammon to the costs of -4 tattoos, btw.

All my chars have +4 -5 tattoos, the money you save can be spent on better gear, and that more then makes up for the small extra loss you have.

+4 -4 is for people who don't get the twinks in this game and just blindfolded follow what the farmers provide.
I hate taking anything from my stats. I hated losing the mana regen on my Elven Elder for the Men I lost when I went +4 Wit/ -4 Men. With C5 Men has the possibility of being even more important because of resists. If that's the case, losing that extra -1 may become pivotal.

There is nothing wrong in having -5 tattoos for the stats that mean nothing to you (like STR to a nuker). But when you would have been overpaying for AA if you got that -4 tats, why do you think you will not be overpaying for that "better gear" with that you are going to "compensate" the loss in your vital stats?

Ever heard of grinding and crafting for your own gear, instead of buying it?

Amen to that ;) :D

Ever bought the gear from a player cheaper than it costed to you to craft it a week before?

You could always grind the AA for the +4-4 tattoos too.
ever ground out 11.8m aa?

it would take at least 4 weeks!
11.8M aa? Wouldn't one tattoo be just 1.74M aa?

I just wanted to point out that the argument that you could grind & craft for better gear to compensate for the detriment from the less expensive tattoos rather then just buy the gear doesn't mean anything - you can grind most anything.

It really is an issue of which stat you are taking from. A fighter getting +4str -5con over +4-4 loses more than a nuker getting +4con -5str. The fighter would be easier to stun, have less hp/hp regen and reduced weight capacity while the nuker would just melee for less damage. It is hard to say the fighter would be wasting aa/a getting a +4-4.
Given that certain classes have restictions on what they can and cannot wear, as a general rule if its cheap enough people will buy it.

sure the fghters cant change their men, and the healers their int, but does it really make the decision ebtween +wit -men or +men -wit all that difficult? some of the set bonuses have offset those downsides a little bit and make the choice easier; the biggest and best example of this is blue wolf robes and majestic robes with thier mp regen bonus passive; it makes a world of difference to me at least how fast my mp goes up and down. i try not to spend it too fast and i try to have little downtime. with either of these sets i do have little downtime by comparison to the huge downtime i would have if i had no set bonus and had a -5men tattoo on; the regen rate bonus more than offsets the -men regen shlump in my own view (yes i do notice the 4 mp per tick, i have limited playtime to begin with).

No, if I craft an Eminence Bow this week, I will not go search for another one...no need :)

Indeed you can grind for your AA but there are better things to buy with your AA then overpriced dye's that you can buy with Adena in the shop...

Isn't it cheaper to buy Akat in Luxor and then to upgrade it to Emi at mammon?

And if you can buy the item cheaper than you could easily resell it overnight... why not?
+4 Str, +4 Dex, -10 Con
I don't have any problems with that, 2 more Con were about 60 HP when I had the tattoos made. That won't make a difference between life and death too often.

450k per tattoo and 400k or so to draw

It was actually 41.4k per dye and 256k for the drawing. So basically, I paid not much more for a complete tattoo than the drawing alone would have been for a +4/-4.

But apart from that, I think buying AA at 1:3 is crazy. I thought it was totally overprices at 1:2, I never bought any AA at more than 1:1,4 which would be about a realistic price. But since everybody wants to get A-grade gear unsealed, it's really easier to farm for that AA - it's still faster then farming the Adena to buy AA.

Did you measure the difference on stun landing rates?
On my alts, I do use the +4/-5 tats. On my main though, my reasoning is that these tats will probably be on your character forever. Gear will change, you'll buy new stuff, use it, discard it. So since its going to be a once ever investment, its worth going the extra distance for.

That was my reasoning at least.

Same here. The +4/-4 are better then -5 ones, it way or may not be worth it. And especialy considering that you can not upgrade it like you do to your's equipment. If you change tatoos you loos at least half of its value, if not 3/4.
And since i whant the most from my toon, i put the most eficient tatoos on it. And I'm a mystic going -con which i dont have much of. I dont whant to get stuned even moire often then I do now %)

No, but I think I do get stunned quite easily since I have the tattoos. The difference between -0 and -10 con is definitely noticeable. I guess Majestic Light will compensate for that, if I ever get that.
I don't think it's a huge difference between -8 and -10 though.
4 M? It costs most A grade players more than that to get +3 patk on their weapon (10 M / A wep enchant on Hinde). If you were going - str + con (God knows why) that would be far more patk loss from one extra strength than a +1 weapon enchant brings. That's just silly.

Besides, 4 M? I draw adena art with more than that.

Total show-off post. Sith, if you have nothing to say then don't post anything.

Most of the time your posts have more in depth content then this.
How is that a show off post? He was just saying the difference in cost between -4 and -5 tattoos isn't significant when one is in A grade gear.

Any character that is saving for Ag will likely get as much or more benefit from the one less negative than from the Ag gear per adena because Ag is so expensive. A nuker with -str is the only exception I can think of and even they might melee the last few hp to save mp in PVE.

Saying that 4M adena is nothing for you = show off. And I'm not even thinking about other possible thoughts when I read that kind of stuff.
