I am not sure of the formula used to calculate spellsinger's cancel chance of success. Does the chance reside only on the caster, or also affects target's mdef/MEN?
Don't know really if cancel is considered a dark attack, a mental attack, a curse or what.

My experience has been that any person not wearing or not wearing adequat jewelry to boost their MDef are more likely to get affected by curses such as cancel or silence or any other of those type spells. In my opinion it is a dark attack as it debuffs the opponent making him/her more vulnarable to attacks.
But the rate of success is really at random and not defined. best shot I ever had with Cancel casting on an opponent was 2/3 buffs gone...But most of the time it only debuffs two or three max at once. Mind you if you get slept it doesn't take that curse away of you (well at least I haven't had that happening yet ;) ).
In any case your jewelry is of importance against magical attack as well as your armor is of importance against physical atack. Of course you can boost your resistance to certain mental attacks by either armor or tattoos boosting the MEN...But it seems that this will change in C5 and that it would be the WIT doing that...So I suggest to boost your jewelry first and see what happens under C5 ;)

The only way we could know if it's dark or not is testing it normal, and testing it having a cardinal buffed you with divine protection, and seeing the results.
cancel is not dark based for sure since LE have no single dark attack.
cancel is spell on its own, arcane protection (chant of spirit) only helps, mdef doesnt really help (Cancel through UD, anyone)

I'll not argue on that point :) as i've seen a whoel topic on the subject of dark attack once and seemed not everyone has the same view...Anyways...
Do agree on MDef against magical attacks though :) Jewelry sure helps
