I read about the subclass system in the L2 Library and I still don't quite fully understand what it is. So, is a subclass is your 2nd class? And you start leveling your subclass from 40?
A subclass is exaclty what you just said, a second char that WILL start at 40 and you can move from your subclass to your main as long as you talk to the right NPC, you cant do it anywhere you wish.
YOu do need a subclass in order to try the Nobeless and Hero game content.
Without it, you can nver become neither.
But to get there you need your Sub to be 75 as well. Then you can do quest to become nobless and stop there or after your a noble, you do the hero quest...
The subclass can be started as of the moment your toon reaches lvl 75. Indeed when choising your subclass you will start off as of lvl 40 and your char will have to level up again in order to gain the skills under that subclass.
If I understood correctly your former skills are no longer available when under subclass. You'll have to go the the NPC for subclassing to switch back each time you wish to use the skills of your main class.
In essence I think it is a quest to avoid boredom on the high levels. The quest to get the subclass priviledges is just insane: Kill raid bosses, run around, kill raid bosses, run around and then FINALLY kill Baium and then level a top B weapon to an A level LOL Just lovely ^^

Wow that was good timing, I JUST gave that quest to LordChaos yesterday :)
I just had to read where all your complains came from lately...as a DE it does not come every day that I respect someone ;) but to do that quest...omg seems like the ToI quest is a lay-back one.

Heh yeah I was looking at my images and the first one is dated 5-31 and the final one is 7-11. So you can see how long it took me to finish that quest.
subclass quest is:
you are 75, you are supposed to have friends already who have your gsm and will wake up for the RBs.
You are 75 and you should have a nobless friend who can sacrifice his/her 2nd (or 3rd!) subclass naked to wake balium, and can port there w/ a noblesse port.
Subclass quest is: you'd better craft SoES, since you can spoil every key mat at toi6, you may need second SoES for crystals and then to suppliment your B grade on the sub.
Subclass quest might be fun to do w/ all the toi running (well silent move to check RBs)...
Some say it might involve pvp but this doesnt happen (you can do ninja log while guys are fighting the RBs...). You may spend a few brez in the process but it doesnt matter.
