Leather clad shammy

Greetings,
My lvl 21 shammy is currently wearing a cursed tunic and stockings (class D). I have robe mastery lvl 6 as well as light armror lvl 6. When I change my cursed tunic, 36 p-def, and put on a hard leather tunic 53 p-def, my overall p-def goes down....???
Why would that be if I've trained in the armor?
I imagined that like WoW, EQ, and EQ2 shammies wear leather. I would like a bit more defense when I solo...

Your masteries stop working if you wear a "mixed" set. :) You need to wear a leather top and bottom, or a robe top and bottom.

Also, if you want PDef, have a look at heavy armour: It's really handy when soloing. =) Most meleeing shaman orcs use that.
